Ah, The Good Old Days(™)! A time when everything was (allegedly) better: the music, the food, and even the fabric of society. Though… which era are we talking about, specifically? For some, it might be the ‘70s and ‘80s. For others, it’s the ‘90s and early 2000s. While others yearn to live a century or two ago, periods they never experienced firsthand.

Nostalgia is great in small doses, but too much of it can make you miss the beauty of the present. The r/lewronggeneration subreddit is a witty online community that is “dedicated to satirically mocking” folks who are completely and utterly “blinded by their own nostalgia.” We’ve collected some of their most cringeworthy posts to show you how many people wear rose-colored glasses to an unhealthy extent.

Bored Panda got in touch with the team that runs r/lewronggeneration, and one of the moderators, u/oh_dangit, was kind enough to answer our questions. Read on to see what they told us.

I would have absolutely taught my kid how to write in cursive and how to read a clock if they stopped teaching that in school. I'd also teach them to drive stick, you never know when it'll come in handy.

I was taught cursive in school then spent a school year learning how to unuse it, I have a manual driving licence being British, but drive an electric, who wants to change gears when you can drive and relax without worrying what gear you are in.

Whoever said that should probably try out living like THEIR parents at their age. Let's so who's laughing then. A bit silly to get on a high horse for knowing an outdated skill, isn't it? Personally, I don't miss dialing on a rotary phone or rewinding tapes with a pencil and I really don't think the generation after mine should know how or why to do that. XD

The fault of not teaching cursive writing anymore lies with the lazy a*s and inept educational system in this country. On the other hand, we who learned cursive can write notes between each other and the kids won't be able to read them.

We were interested to get the moderator's take on why the r/lewronggeneration subreddit has seen so much success over the years. "I think that the anti-nostalgia baiting message that is attached to the subreddit and has been there since its inception resonates with a lot of people who don't have strong feelings of nostalgia for one thing or another," u/oh_dangit told Bored Panda.

"One of the core beginnings was based on music; such as people who becry musicians nowadays for creating their own sound and making it unique to themselves," they said.

We were also curious to find out more about what it's like to moderate an online community of this size. According to u/oh_dangit, being a moderator mostly "comes down to dealing with spam and people leaving comments that break rules."

Because you wanted to select the opening for 'style' points, the next lines are : "Now, what you hear is not a test, I'm rapping to the beat and me, the groove, and my friends are gonna try to move your feet. You see, I am Wonder Mike and I'd like to say hello to the black, to the white, the red and the brown, the purple and yellow". Or you could've used Grandmaster Flash The Message. But no, go for the cheap laugh with subtle overtones.

people complain about “todays music” all the time, and while it’s true the majority of pop songs are very corporate friendly-sounding there’s nothing stopping you from listening to old music or looking for more underground artists you could like. there’s always going to be someone creative and wanting to create meaningful art

Complaining about "todays music" is a sure way to see that a person has nothing in mind exept themselves. New music is always different than old. Its the way all music was born, it evolved from the old. And also you can’t make endles amount of the same music, it needs to evolve or it just repeats itself. The music you think is so good, was not good for most of your parents generation. There has always been "frivolous" music and "good" music. Not all music is supposed to be epic, some is just entertainment, not ment to be taken too seriously. Old people are not supposed to like new music. Young people want to have their own thing.

Lived through the First Cold War in a nuclear target. Strangely comforting as we'd have been vaporised rather than a slow death. Cold War II has expanded to include China and the rhetoric is more dangerous and involves starting a war in Europe that's killing hundreds of thousands. Unless we get leaders who want peace shortly then I think there will be full on war NATO Vs Russia/China - this could very easily go nuclear..

Exactly. This is clearly a photo shoot. You can find staged family photos of well dressed folks from any time since photography was invented, up until today. House dresses were really commonly worn, and they look dressy to us because dress=fancy in our modern brains, but they were the "hoodie and leggings" of that generation.

Back in the day, my mother never left the house without wearing a girdle. Not to go to the grocery store, not to go on vacation, or to go to a PTA meeting. Inside the house, she didn’t wear one, but I have clear memories of her struggling to get that damn thing on. I also remember visiting Williamsburg VA one summer. If you’ve ever been in the southeast US in summer, you know what I mean. When we got back to the hotel room free walking around all day, she went to shower and change for dinner. That’s when she found out her girdle’s elastic waistband had melted enough to fuse with her underwear’s elastic waistband, because it was hot that day, and she’d been exercising and getting hot herself with all the walking we did. That was in the early seventies, and the moment I decided I would never wear a girdle—-they’re called Spanx today, btw. I never have worn one, I just try to stay in relatively good shape and buy clothes that actually fit. Now that I live in Maryland, I am much much cooler in summer than my mother was back in the day, I can tell you.

Women did go out in public wearing something like pajamas during this time though. It was called a "day dress" and it was worn after a woman took off her nightgown but before she was fully attired. Day dresses were knee length shifts that either buttoned or zipped up the front, sometimes cinched with a belt or sash, usually short sleeved, and came in all colors and patterns. And they were frequently worn while the hair was in rollers with a scarf over them. Nobody went shopping dolled up like Jayne Mansfield.

They added: "Though there is a lot of reposting since heaps of [stuff] like this is reposted constantly. Maybe in the past, when there were more actual posts and popular posts, I think that there'd be far more time committed to moderating," they said that the times have changed a bit.

The moderator also shared their thoughts on where the line is when someone's become far too immersed in nostalgia: "Looking too much towards the past will only hurt your perspective towards the future," they said.

The r/lewronggeneration community has been going strong for nearly a decade now. Founded in mid-August of 2013, the sub has grown to house over 300k members since that time.

According to the moderator team running the whole show, the subreddit itself was created out of annoyance over the ‘born in the wrong generation’ that fans of ‘60s and ‘70s rock often express. So there’s a special emphasis on music on r/lewronggeneration, but other forms of nostalgia are welcome, too, from other forms of media to societal trends.

Teens have always done dumb stuff. Always. We just like to pretend we didn't. I'm in my 50s and probably really shouldn't have survived to adulthood based on what I did. The good thing was everyone didn't have cell phones to record out idiocy for all time.

Kids are not stupid, stupidity is currently a big franchise for entertaining, idolizing and money. You can't blame them to want to be popular/viral, when they are feed trash since they are born. In the past we had also this "kind of fun" but these people didn't become millionaires.

I've been making year by year music playlists on my youtube channel. I'm currently still on 2008 and it's been about 5 months. I've just been leaving out the country songs. I've done all the 80s and 90s. Every year, for the most part, the numbers of songs increase. There's a ton of songs and bands I've added to my favourites. There's always something for everyone if people would take the time to stray away from the charts. And even though the 90s had some bangers, some of them didn't age well, and I don't think the 90s were the ultimate best era for music, my unpopular opinion.

Breaking news: teens of EVERY generation (yes, it’s true. Some generations worse than others) break the rules, do drugs, drink, cheat, push boundaries, swear, screw, steal, lie etc. You all did at least one of those things, and probably knew someone that did it all. That’s just what teens do, test waters, figuring c**p out, rebelling. It’s just a fact. The only thing that really matters is getting past it all and coming out the other end a sane, healthy, law abiding, loving, kind, well adjusted adult. THATS what’s worth bragging about and being proud of.

That was your “orange juice” or “tomato” juice”. I remember doing that at a job when I was 21. Another girls and I were the senior employees. The company had just hired a slew of new people. The f*****g new people got Christmas off, and the other senior girl and I had to work! She took the morning shift, and I took the evening shift. She had her “tomato juice” nd I had my “orange juice”. Thing is, we didn’t decide to do that together, we had no idea until I came in for my shift. We were griping about having to work, and told each other how we decided to protest it. We kept it on the downlow too. I haven’t told that story since the day it happened, 40+ years ago.

The mods ask the members to post images and videos that fit the spirit of the subreddit. In short, the content should be focused on “quasi-nostalgic attitudes, often with a sense of superiority.” However, posts can’t have anyone’s identifying information displayed in them, whether that’s actual names or internet usernames. The point is to gently mock over-the-top nostalgia, not the individuals themselves.

Moreover, members of r/lewronggeneration ought to avoid posting content that they created themselves. Meanwhile, if anyone’s in the mood for some satire, they’re welcome to go for it, but they have to add the ‘Satire’ flair to make it clear to everyone else.

In the meantime, everyone’s asked to be civil, and polite, and to “keep the elitism at the door.” While disagreements are perfectly fine (and, if we’re honest, completely unavoidable on the internet), calling other users names and insulting them is way over the line. What’s more, the mods frown upon low-effort posts, redditors who spam memes, and repost irresponsibly.

Valentina Stoycheva Ph.D. explains in a post on Psychology Today that nostalgia can lead to unhelpful behaviors and have negative consequences when taken to an extreme.

“The difference between helpful and harmful nostalgia is the difference between incorporating the positive emotions of reminiscing into the present versus renouncing the present for the sake of reinstating and perpetually reliving some moment in the past,” she writes.

To be fair, Allison's makeover scene is the least favorite part of the film according to fans and the late John Hughes said many times that he regretted it and would have ended the movie differently if he could do it again. It completely disregards the message of the film.

The “cartoons then” spans like 100 years. Every decade of animation can be marked by a specific style or styles. Even Bugs Bunny looks different depending on when the short you are watching came out. Very misleading.

2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Yeah, and especially more infuriating when you actually remeber just how "cheap", repetitive and derivative the animation in Hanna-Barbera cartoons like the Flintstones, Jetsons, Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo, Top Cat, Huckleberry Hound, etc. Most of the times only the head and arms would move, the backgrounds were reused over and over and the animation poses were reused from production to production. So pointing out how four different modern shows who also share a lot of the same people working on them are similar in art style is disingenuous in the extreme.

In Stoycheva’s opinion, overindulging in nostalgia is similar to overusing salt or pepper in your dishes, leading to the present being “colored by the negative emotions, in favor of glorifying some moment in the past.” There’s a need for balance here so that nostalgia doesn’t consume someone’s life.

I don't understand why people turn "generation bashing" into a sport. Every younger generation loses some skill, knowledge or experience that the older generation had, but they gain something new. It's always been that way. Every younger generation becomes the older generation. Time is a river. Appreciate the journey.

Actually, even during the 60s, there were hundreds of thousands of teens who weren't hippies and went the conservative route. Today there are two types of boomers: those conservatives that make life a pain for the rest of us and the used-to-be hippies that still don't believe in war and are still fighting for all our rights 60 years later.

But that is dumb argument. No one is saying they should just remake old cars. What they are saying is the "style" was better. Wouldn't you want that sweet Camaro, that looks like your old Camaro, but is built using all modern stuff (safety systems included)? We are talking about form factor only, which can effectively have zero relation to safety. Dodge has done this with the Challengers. They have that old muscle car style, but modern everything else. Wish more companies would do this. Imagine getting a modern version of like a '67 Mustang?!

    Rikki Spanish

Exactly! Classic car lovers are thinking more about something like a 1957 Chevy Bel-Air, a 1971 Chevelle(my late mother owned one back in the day), or a 1966 Shelby Cobra. And not all 80s cars were ugly. A 1981 Chevy Corvette is pure sexiness on four wheels.

Some individual examples where people go overboard with nostalgia include getting excessive plastic surgery in order to create the illusion of youth, hoarding things, and using social media to track down their ex-partners. On a societal level, overindulging in nostalgia can lead to people glorifying their historical past without acknowledging the collective traumas of the past.

I also stopped with cursive as soon as I didn't have to use it anymore. Friggen hate it. My handwriting is terrible to begin with so with cursive I had to spend extra time making it look slightly less s****y so people could understand what I was writing. Didn't save me any time. Luckily our school only required cursive for two years (4th and 5th grade iirc) and then all the teachers were like "eh don't care, just make it legible"

I agree with kids not being allowed to be bored for a second, it seems to terrify them and their parents, but give kids some Lego, plasticine, toy cars, whatever, and they'll still enjoy playing with them. Kids haven't changed, we have. Oh, and btw, kids still LOVE having a story read to them, which sadly a lot of parents don't do much anymore.

One of my good kid memories (60s) is a week spent with the big box after my folks got a new refrigerator. Me and my fiends had so much fun with that box. I mean, I'm not a cat but I can kind of relate.

As a 90s kid I would have preferred having the today's kid stuff. As an adult that's what I spend my free time on. It's all personal preference. Little kids still play with bubbles, they still have legos....I just can't find a good tamagotchi anywhere.

Okay, I'm born in 1989 and I was bored a million times during the nineties. I had soap bubbles (then still make those) and legos (also make those) and a tamagochi and movies and video games etc etc etc and I still got bored. Kids are allowed to feel bored. The only problem now, that I read in i magazine (Illustrerad Vetenskap ((Illustrated Science))) is that the attention span gets shorter if the kids only are subjected to short videos or quick entertainment. It's not the generation that's wrong, people just need better salaries/work conditions/support so they'll have the time and energy to do slow entertainment with their children.

Nostalgia, according to Stoycheva, is focused on simplicity rather than complexity, so it can backfire as an emotional regulatory strategy because the world itself is so complex. According to her, this can be countered by coming face to face with our own biases and beliefs and tackling uncomfortable feelings of shame and longing.

Same c**p different decade. Only difference is that without the internet there was a lot more ignorance around issues. You didn't know you were living next to a sex offender and that there was a serial killer two towns over.

80's. It was okay unless you were gay, in a union, or a person of color. GRID/AIDs became a thing by the early 80s and it killed a lot of really good people, there were very few treatments and the stigma around this disease was immense. Economically it was a rough decade, better than the 70s but rough- started in a recession and had a big meltdown in the late 80s. We raised ourselves, many homes were one parent or had two working parents and there weren't after school activities so we spent a lot of time figuring stuff out on our own, lots of teen mothers back then. We were plenty scared, gang violence was a big thing and getting really bad by the late 80s. Los Angeles spent a summer hiding from the Night Stalker. Adam Walsh was murdered and we met John Walsh for the first time and learned to be afraid. The concept of date rape wasn't understood, being drunk or high or wearing revealing clothes was consent. It wasn't remotely perfect.

We were more naive in the 1980s. Ignorant. This is how abusers got away with their crimes. No one talked openly about sex, sexual assault. Loads of people were hurt and damaged, and suffered in silence. Ignorance is not bliss.

I grew up in the 80's. It was ok. Bad things happened then too. Miners strikes. Destruction of the working class. High profile sex offenders getting away with the most awful crimes until way later. Just your regular decade.

Wow, to be so delusional. Real friends? Well they didn't know they were excluded until a few hours or days later. Kidnappings/abductions happened. Rapes happened, and the usual first question of the victim was "what were you wearing? Why were you there? etc" Bullies were around and teachers looked the other way, mainly because it was the privileged jocks or cheerleaders doing the bullying.

Lol, obviously this person has never read an 80s teen magazine or they'd know how awful fashion was, with big hair and shoulder pads; and people always had to be careful, there were sexual offenders in the 80s too, you know. Nuclear drills in school, very special episodes of sitcoms where there was a nuclear threat, nuclear drills on tv shows, nuclear accidents all over our movies...they really beat into us that it could be all over any minute now, but there's was nothing we could do about it, so just be very afraid. Strangers want to give you free drugs that will destroy your brain instantly. Oh, and get a gun. Kids now are actually getting slaughtered in school and US conservatives plug their ears and sing "this is not happening."

Stoycheva suggests that everyone who’s feeling nostalgic for an activity, a period of time, and people to ask themselves these questions: “What emotion am I after? In engaging in nostalgia, what former self-state am I seeking to recreate? How will this help me and also how can I stay rooted in the present while I also feel the positive emotions of reminiscing? Am I avoiding complex emotions? If so, what are they, and why are they so hard for me? Where else can I seek help in managing my emotions?”

Much like how "Alien" is "A slasher movie but IN SPACE!" there was an article or something that "Predator" is at least a slasher movie "But MANLY!" and/or a meta on toxic masculinity since said Predator only targets warriors/soldiers and trying to be macho against it only gets them killed faster/worse that Dutch has to fight smarter/more defensively to win.

As a Gen Xer, I disagree with this. I know people like to portray the Millennials and Gen Z like this, but it's nonsense. My generation got hosed. But nothing like these generations have. I admire how they don't take c**p from companies and challenge the idea of "work hard and you'll get ahead". The truth is their is a natural reaction to companies exploiting them. And all you need to do is open your eyes and you will see it. The model businesses operate under now demands that kind of response. They broke the social contract between between companies and workers. And they did it in a deceptive manner. Pensions, healthcare, and social security are a few examples. They made sure to take care of the Boomers so they wouldn't call foul and let Gen X & Y work old school style without the rewards. And we were too inexperienced to see it. From the time I turned 18 I have seen home costs jump from $30k for a house to $350k. While the federal minimum wage went from $2.35 to $7.25. Insane.

In the meantime, Bored Panda has previously written about how people tend to be the most nostalgic for those periods of time when they were happiest. For many, that’s their childhood because they had fewer responsibilities. However, if someone had an awful childhood, you most likely won’t find them reminiscing about that period of time.

Though nostalgia can be a good coping strategy when you’re feeling blue, it can interfere with our daily lives. For instance, if we constantly compare the present to the past and feel like nothing ever measures up in terms of values and quality, then we’ll feel disappointed.

Umm...in my experience, older generations actually had much more ads for alcohol and cigarettes, and it felt more socially acceptable to drink, there were many songs about drinking and smoking (pretty much every country song I can think of has a reference to drinking or smoking). In the 1940s most superheroes in their civilian identity were portrayed with smoking pipes.

Back then it was socially acceptable to smoke in the office and have cocktails at lunch hour. Even restaurants would ask you ….smoking or non-smoking.

This is dumb. Throughout the ages silly dances are about having fun doing silly dances. I don't care if it is doing the swim or gangnam style or the hokey pokey or whatever that is in picture 2. If you are having fun doing it then good on you. And I'm kind of chuckling at poster holding up gangnam style as the 'better' dance given it is actually kind of silly if you look at it. But again - if you had fun...

The death of megaupload ended an era too. Filesharing sites were fantastic for piracy since you'd buy an album, rip the songs and stick them on your megaupload to share with everyone. We had a whole community of people that would take turns buying games/music/movies and sharing it with everyone else. Ah how I miss it.

The Internet is vastly different than it was when it first got off the ground. Everything is about marketing and a reduction in privacy now it feels like. Social was an important piece of it then too but it had different connotations. Had to make an effort to get on and could disconnect way easier

My 70 year old mom was giving an interview in preparation for the exhibition of her paintings. The person who was taking the interview asked if she also studied computer graphics when she was learning to become an artist (mom studied at the design academy in USSR in 1970s, back then it wasn't called the design academy though). She had to reply "No, because the computers didn't exist back then". Yeah, technically there were computers already. But they 1) were only in big research institutes, not for every man in USSR, and 2) weren't used for graphics in the modern sense back then.

They had been around longer than the wrestling organization. So, they changed it to World Wrestling Entertainment. (WWE).

My brother-in-law is a master stonemason and bricklayer who owns his own construction company. One of my cousins is a carpenter by trade and another one is a boat mechanic. The only trade I can think of that seems to no longer exist, at least where I live, is a shoemaker.

Hannibal Lecter said: "He would like to be transsexual, but he is not." I also like when Clarisse points out that there is no link between violence and transexuality. So yes: Buffalo Bill would still be considered a dangerous psychopath today. Nothing to do with transexuality, whether in the 90s or today 😜

If all you see are "cheating videos" on FB, then either you or someone who uses your electronics has convinced the evil FB algorithm that you would be most likely to engage with those posts. My FB feed is filled with automotive and machine shop ads, Letterkenny memes, and music gear ads besides the posts from "friends". I'm a Gen-Xer and I don't think people "cheat" on their SOs more now than in the past but with social media, these days we get EVERY. SORDID. DETAIL. I mean, younger people don’t like to commit to relationships and stay loyal to a partner; hence why there a thing called a “situation-ship.” Sure would be nice if people wouldn’t cheat…we might have better relationships.

They have their own personality they love gaming, dying their hair, cool clothes and damn good music and my eldest is almost always on her phone..every day and I don't care because they are happy. My daughter is disabled and her phone is her lifeline..and when I ask them to do chores and they do it happily because I don't shout at them for every little thing like when I was a kid.

Before pornhub there still was pornography. Postcards, magazines, books... Heck, look up "ancient Greek vase", you'll find many examples of vases painted with sexually explicit images, hetero and homo, BTW. Globalization (meaning as the Poster intended, such as people mixing with other "races") has always existed. We, as Homo sapiens, would not exist as we are now if we didn't migrate from Africa and then mix with Neanderthals. We are the results of Globalization. And the first picture is just silly. So people on Tiktok are idiots while poor children forced to punch each other for money is ok and nostalgic? Uh?

ah yes, when people thought (and proved) you don't need any kimd of musicianship to cut a record, just power chords and eighth note monotone bass lines. almost as simple-minded/mindless as country.

OK this is a little true though. Everything wasn't insanely monetized. You could actually find real answers on the web instead of whatever the algorithm is pushing that pays the most. Content in general wasn't geared toward being devisive to push viewership and you could actually watch a whole YouTube video without ads. People were also a lot less mean and less offended by everything. And for some sites there was reasonable moderation. For the record I'm pro moderation but also pro grace. None of us are seen as human anymore online. Just a collection of right or wrong beliefs that Google, meta, etc are figuring out how to leverage for $$$.

i used to physically go to the arcade where allthe games and kids were, back when gaming was a social activity, before gaming was for antisocial basement-dwellers

Gaming is even more of a social activity now than it ever was, you doughnut. Before, you ran into the same 10 kids in the arcade, 8 of which were bullies and would huck you into the trash can upside-down and steal your quarters. Now, I can make friends in other countries and learn about cultures I may never have even heard of when I was a kid in the arcade. And just to clarify: Firstly, yes, I'm old enough to have played in arcades and to have gotten an Atari as a kid, so I do know what I'm talking about, and secondly, I don't live in a basement, yet I still play games. Shocking!

If music was legitimately bad, they wouldn't have a record label releasing stuff. Sure I hate a particular type of music but it must be popular with others to be released. You can't conflate your subjective opinion with objective opinion.
