I am really bummed out about all of the new ads. I've had a dvr since 1999 and I can't deal with not being able to fast forward. They even show ads when you pause now.

It used to be everyone dropped cable because you could save money by streaming. Now, they all are so expensive that it's about as much as cable. Spend more to watch more unoriginal remakes or reruns that you used to be able to watch free.

I think they planned it that way. Starting out so cheap so everyone has access and will sign up and get addicted to binge watching. Then raise prices slowly over time.

In Germany, I paid sky 20€ ever month to have ads between every episode of their streaming. You can have the exact same movies and series with Wow (who is also from sky) for 8.99 monthly, the difference is that you can watch normal tv Programm with the "normal" sky, which I rarely did.

Oh My God yes!!! I learned this on a cruise when I sat in on a talk being given by ship staff discussing things to look for and to watch out for when we disembark at the next stop the next day. Btw, I do highly recommend attending these talks. You glean very useful information to help you plan for any shopping you plan to do at each port of call and they always include coupons and vouchers for discounts and free stuff that and you won’t receive these coupons and vouchers if you don’t attend. Anyway, they and several jewelry stores told us about how much of a rip off diamonds are. They are actually super abundant, and their pricing structure is due to enormous greed.

The DeBeers Company has a near monopoly on diamonds and they keep them artificially scarce to justify the high price. They're also the ones who have convinced the last few generations that an engagement ring MUST have a diamond in it as proof of love.

You refer to tipping? Employees at a restaurant should be paid a normal wage. Tipping should only be done in the case of exceptional service and then it should go into the pockets of the employee(s), not the owner. Don't tip and/or don't go to that particular establishment anymore. Also get organised!

Expected tipping sucks, but not tipping at restaurants is not the answer, it just hurts the employees. They're still getting paid dirt, just minus the tips.

Unfortunately the system (as usual) is set up to screw the person doing the actual work. I will continue tipping but only in cash given directly to the employee. BTW, does anyone remember the first months of covid when the only take-out you could find was pizza? Apparently fast food workers were considered "essential workers". They deserve respect.

Re that last sentence: If “respect” is defined as “individuals giving optional money” (yes, I am aware that waiters in the US are a different matter), I’m afraid my “respect” budget is already being used up on about eight different charities. Would you be interested in paying a monthly “respect” to any of those?

I agree that people should not have to rely on tips to survive but, as someone who used to bartend, my employer would NEVER be able to afford to pay me what I made getting tips. It's just not reasonable to expect any employer to be able to supplement that because some people are super generous. I got a 1K tip more than once. I often got over 1K on the weekends. Even if they raised the prices on drinks to be able to equal the hundreds of dollars you get a night from tips, they'd lose business. All the same people who b!tch about tipping are also the ones who b!tch about costs being so high and stop going to those places. Also, in a perfect world, sure, we're all awesome and we all want to do the best every day. But in the real world, a lot of people do the bare minimum. Those big tips motivated me to go above and beyond and to go into work even when I didn't feel like it. I'd be angry if someone was trying to take that away.

Other countries manage this issue of tipping and paying fair wages reasonably well. Tipping, as it is done in the US, is neither fair for the customer (being guilted into providing a decent wage for someone else's employee) nor for the server who is, in essence, at the mercy of the generosity or guilt of the patrons. The employer should be legally required to pay a decent and fair wage, period. Then, let the customer decide if they want to tip or not.

To be fair, paying the employees has always been on the patron. No one gets paid if no one spends money there. Some people love the tip system, others hate it. That said: tip in cash and reference it as "cash gift" on your receipt. No, cash gifts are not reportable income in the US unless they exceed $17,000 from a single person.

Lord yes. Please, just raise the costs of the meals a bit so you can pay them a living wage without requiring your patrons to take better care of your employees than you do. And even worse if you also include covering the “income tax” for the employees as well.

It would end up cheaper to pay them at least minimum wage and mark up the food, avoiding the entire tipping issue. What I truly hate is when they want you to tip when they are already paid non-tipping wages. [Starbucks]

I love how people say this— but, if restaurants raised wages so that servers and bartenders made the equivalent in what they made in tips, customers would just complain about the increase in prices.

    Cari Owens

The problem with tipped jobs is the law assumes *every* customer will tip therefore bringing the pay up to minimum wage. That's how restaurants get away with underpaying their staff.

Dental insurance is a joke. It's more like a discount plan than anything else. I just had a back tooth pulled (abscess from a cracked tooth- happened on a Friday and by Sunday, my jaw looked like I was smuggling walnuts) and even with dental insurance, it was $250. Without it would have been $415.... right at Christmas, too.

Especially the colon cleanses. Those can actually have a (temporary) adverse effect on health since they don't differentiate between harmful and beneficial gut bacteria. Yes, there are bacteria in your colon that are essential to good health. By cleaning out ALL bacteria, the benefits are lost until they repopulate.

Also note there is a difference between detox and cleanse. I’ve known people that will detox from sugar or carbs, etc and after several weeks of your body adjusting to the new normal, things become easier as far as not craving these items and being able to be satisfied and satiated with much smaller doses than before the detox period. Personally, I am of the opinion that small, reasonable servings of anything you want combined with exercise. I lost 167 pounds this way

If textbooks were reasonably priced, students would buy them. Charging $140 for a single book is ridiculous. Now students just download all their books for free because they can't afford to buy the 17 books they need for one year of uni.

Yeah, but it were supposed to be about 90+ notes nailed to a church door, BUT history science tends to believe that this did not happened in the way it is still taught at school...we do like to glorify things that happened in the past and the only thing that IS a fact is that Martin Luther probably died of a heart attack...🔨 📄 🚪

I'm someone who always plays devil's advocate because I believe in business. I believe you aren't evil if you want to make money. Charge what you want...whatever. But give me what I pay for. Printer companies have been repeatedly called out for how little ink is in the cartridge, and forcing you to buy products you don't need. Every time my printer runs out of black, I have to buy the black AND the color together because it comes as a set. They have the individual black but they're always mysteriously out of stock. And the black ink is only filled up about half way. So you constantly run out. It's practically criminal.

    Cari Owens
    Community Member

That's because the printer companies are using the "Gillette" business model - sell the printer relatively cheap and charge out the butt for the ink. There's also the nifty idea of the chip that tells you you're out of ink even when it's still half full and won't allow you to use that color unless you replace ALL the cartridges. I think only Epson allows the use of refillable/third party cartridges.

For an inkjet printer it is cheaper to buy a new printer with starter cartridges than buying new ink. I use a laser printer and my color toner cartridges are a hundred bucks each.

But yeah, they mostly seem to be a way for people who can't stand anyone doing anything they personally dislike to control all the neighbors.

What people don't understand anymore, is that if you buy a new house just about anywhere, you are forced into an hoa because local government doesn't want to be responsible for street maintenance, etc. I live in an area where 20 years ago, there were no hoa's, now you cannot buy a house without one (unless you buy a much older house and then there are issues that come with that - new water heater, new roof, yada yada).

People Call Out 40 Products That Are Huge Scams Yet People Still Like Them For Some Reason For women, almost any product with a different "Women's" version, that is only different because it is pink. This is actually called "the pink tax," because these products are nearly always more expensive than the men's version. On a much smaller scale, men have a "jock" tax, where products for their genitals are more expensive than the same thing for other parts of the body. One example I saw recently was cream for jock itch, three times the price of the same antifungal cream sold for foot fungus.

This narrative is a lie. There is no pink tax. Pink is a less popular color. Switching production, distribution, longer shelf life, etc. all add up to a higher selling price. Specialty colors are just more expensive.

Only used a meal delivery app once when I had to travel for work. I was grateful for the option but I met the delivery driver in the hotel lobby specifically so I could hand them a cash tip.

I've never even ordered delivery, but if people are willing to pay extra for the convenience, more power to them. I've also never flown first class unless it was a free upgrade. Delivery drivers wouldn't be doing it if wasn't profitable for them, and people wouldn't be paying extra if it wasn't worth it to them!

Spend a few days in a country where bidets are normal, and you'll come back wondering why you haven't always had one. The answer is, it's bulky. There are kits you can add to a regular toilet, but if they aren't cleaned with every use, they can become unsanitary and spray bacteria. A proper design involves a second throne, which takes up a lot of space. Wipes are a poor substitute that you don't dare use with a septic. Honestly, the regular waste management system doesn't like them either. They don't break down like they say they do.

Can't use a bidet to remove stubborn cosplay makeup, or do a quick "sponge bath" when out camping, or wipe the dirt off my feet if I walk outside barefoot. Also it's easy enough to toss them into a wastebasket after using instead of flushing them.

They ONLY care about your money. And when there's a disaster and marky mark is asking for a $10 donation to the Red Cross, he could write a tax deductibled check for $100,000 instead of pandering or guilting people. $100K is nothing to that convicted felon, but $10 is a lot to a lot of people.

(Austria/Germany) The other ones that were supposed to exist according to the internet were either not there, not drinkable or not built to fill bottles. Cities should build more of them.

EVERY SINGLE MLM. Period. Been fooled by far too many over the decades. They are ALL the same, no matter what anyone tells you. Products in the US are almost entirely unregulated. If you are in an MLM, you probably won’t believe until your butt has been burned to many times. (I did not believe it, and justified each one I was in.) 99.9% do not make money. It might look like you do, but you really need to do the maths on cost of product subscriptions, “training”, costs of seminars, travel, you name it. Far too many “high up” have garages full of product they’ve bought just to earn a pin level. It is criminal how many people have gone - literally - broke and in debt, because they were sold the scam “dream” and “hustle” and “boss-lady/entrepreneur” BS. You are not an entrepreneur, you are a money making machine for the founder and the precious few at the top.

I'm still largely skeptical, mostly because it's nearly impossible to verify that any homeopathic remedy you're buying even contains the active ingredients it's claiming to... However, one of my jobs is at a horse farm that uses homeopathic remedies for just about everything, for the horses and for people. Even tick-borne diseases like Lyme and anaplasmosis. All I know, is you can see evidence of the remedies working and eventually negative tests for the diseases themselves 🤷🏼‍♀️. There's probably a lot of great homeopathic remedies out in the world, you just can't find them because the Internet has become an information sewer and companies in the US have lobbied enough loopholes into legislation that they can claim a product contains a substance so long as one molecule resembles the active ingredient 🙄

    Kira Okah
    Community Member
1 year ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

If your homeopathic remedy has an active ingredient in it, that is not homeopathy. Homeopthy is the theory that water has memory of something that it once contained so it doesn't have to actually contain it to work. You're talking herbal medicine, which is entirely different.

I think it's good for people who have specially made stuff, like to match their walls or specially sized to fit. A girl I know her parents have a fridge door that they made to match the wall it was built into. Totally weird but some people like the 'hidden' look. It's going to be a lot more expensive to replace those so a warranty is fine but make sure it covers what you need it to cover. 9 times out of 10 it only covers internal parts, which are probably going to last a while. It's physical damage that happens more often than not, and most warranties don't cover that.

Anything that is described with words like non fungible tokens and associated digital asset is a scam intentionally made ridiculously complicated to confuse the scammie.

Okay to be faaaaaaair INITIALLY like back at inception it was supposed to be for digital artists to be able to control where their work is used better, like DRMs. Of course in this tyool 2023 it got turned around to be sold like trading cards and is dead in the water, but it was a good concept for making sure someone's works aren't copied or stolen. Just not for apes.

Fat burner products. If you ingest something that actually burns fat off you, it’s either poison or fire

Whoever wrote this is taking the phrasing a little too literally, similar to the phrase “burns calories”. In the instance of fat burners, it’s usually imply that the metabolism will be sped up and fat will be used as fuel rather than stored. However, irregardless of phrasing, fat burners still don’t work. Only a calorie controlled diet will get rid of excess fat.

This I find is true. I sew some of my clothes myself, but I love to wear woolen twinset, so once I bought 5 sets, because they were to be had in an especially lovely colour. That is about 15 years ago, and some of them needs repairing (the seams), but they still look nice enough to wear. They will be repaired soon.

They should pay us for the data, instead they lose it to hackers and/or quietly sell it to third parties for even more profit! However, as largely useless as all those things are, it did end up getting me in touch with one of my 4 half brothers I knew existed, but never thought I'd meet. Got to spend Thanksgiving with them and their families and best of all, got to meet and confront my POS father for the first time at age 35, and ask why he never told my brothers I existed even though he was a part of their lives and stayed with their mother(S). He tried to weasel out of meeting me too, but fortunately my brothers are far better people than he was. The BEST was when I got in his face and asked if he was pro-life (*in TEXAS of all awful places), just for him to say that he was... To which I exclaimed the lifelong truth, "Really? COS I WISH I WAS ABORTED." 😂. I still do, but that was a highlight of my life.

Considering how expensive healthcare is in the US WITH decent insurance, every part of the system is designed to literally and figuratively bleed you dry. Most doctors are so overbooked they don't even remember you or have time to look at your chart, then they go through the motions and throw a pill at you, refer you to yet another specialist or simply tell you to "wait and see" and come back in a month.

In the US most people will never meet their yearly deductible so they're paying out of pocket for treatment PLUS their premiums. In cases of terminal illness, most companies will drop the patient when they start costing the company real money. The first priority of ANY insurance company is the shareholders, not the policy holders.

On one hand, its nice to get a large room with a kitchen so you don't have to eat out. Plus the exchange companies give out some really good deals sometimes, particularly if your like me and travel the off season. But you can pick one up on ebay for a buck. The "developer" charges through the nose and its never worth it. Then if you get it through ebay they still try to upsell you once you use it, usually touting all the extra benefits you get...which you could get with a AAA card.

I feel like time shares would work better if the people who got into them were just more clear about their responsibilities and everyone did the same amount of work. Time share fees are ridiculous but more often than not, it's the people who get into them who now want to change their time allotment and it throws everyone else off. Upkeep and cleaning is sometimes not done and it gets the others angry... if everyone in the time share did their part and were clear about the rules, it would be a better thing.

I happen to live in an area with a very large Mormon population. My experience is really restricted to the specific people I’ve met, but my overall impression is that they are kind, caring people. I’ve never had them push religion on us, but I have had them invite us to their trunk or treat, or some get together. Just fun people, games, food. It’s nice. It feels like a supportive community from what I’ve seen. I remember talking about savings and life insurance with a friend and he, without hesitation said, if anything happened to him he knows the church would take care of his wife and kids. Summer of 2020, my husband and I both got Covid, right before/around my son’s birthday. Our friend, who happened to be Mormon, without us asking, brought us a birthday cake for our son and left it at our door. I know religion can have its flaws, but don’t write someone off as bad because they have beliefs different from yours. Judge them for how they act and treat other’s.

My mother will stop being your friend if you don't convert. She helped friend of hers that had broken an ankle and who was grateful for my mom's initial visits with food and offers of help, etc. But then mom started harassing her with visits leaving Mormon books for her to read and trying to get her to convert. When she didn't want to convert, mom stopped being her friend. The church teaches that it's YOUR JOB to convert everyone else. If you don't, it's YOUR FAILURE.

The latest Keurig coffee makers will NOT allow the use of any pod that isn't Keurig. Off brands/reusable pods just won't work because Keurig pods have a barcode that the maker reads. Have any single ladies out there had the unfortunate experience of car shopping? Let's see..the first salesman had a wind up plastic pickle that hopped across his desk (yes that's what I said). The next one called me Darlin 20 times and we're not from the south. I wrote an editorial about it and had every dealership in town suddenly wanting my money. After I placed my order for a custom package I received a bouquet of roses. Do men get roses too?

We just bought a car from a dealership. Negotiated them down because I pitted their "non-negotiable paint protection" against a different dealerships "non-negotiable security system" and got them to drop the price over a grand. You go in expecting to pay more for sure, but the convenience of having the car history, it being cleaned up and freshly inspected, and the kicker, not having to go to the damn DMV, is totally worth it.

Molecular nitrogen (N2) is inert. It forms a triple bond with itself, which isn't easily broken. Nitrogen fixation in the soil is one of the few processes that can break it down and convert it into biologically useful compounds. But you are correct that nitrogen also forms one of the most explosive compounds known to science, ie: nitroglycerin. I'm not sure what use N2 has in tires, but if I were to guess, I'd say it probably prevents the oxygen in regular air from reacting with and degrading the rubber inside the tire over time. Perhaps it also has beneficial thermal properties? Doubting it's worth it.

I'm honestly on the fence here. I had a pinched nerve in my neck and a chiropractor was able to get me back to function without surgery. Haven't had an issue since. He didn't make any crazy promises like he would clear my skin or cure my depression, he just checked my range of motion and symptoms and said that he thought he could help me, that I had vertebrae that were impinging on a nerve and causing the pain and tingling I was feeling, and he did some adjustments and I got relief.

I had this same opinion until I had crippling back pain/problems. Could barely walk or function. Thousands of dollars later, I visited my In-laws' chiropractor and got the pinched nerve fixed in a week. $20 a session, for a few visits and it helped amazingly. I am still skeptical of most, but I no longer think that they're all scam artists.

The Korean is a good example, China too. Off-label clothes sold to locals in Korea and China are terrible quality, way worse than you can imagine. So anyone from Korea and China with any money has to buy label clothes, and that translates to buying label clothes in Western Europe, America and Australia where it is no longer necessary. Of people who buy label clothes in Australia, at least 98% are of Asian origin.

Then they throw it all in the regular garbage anyway. I told them they ought to be paying US for doing THEIR work if they want us to recycle. Then when I found out they toss it all together anyway, I told them to take back their stupid recycling can and now I throw all the garbage together myself. And if the bill goes just a little higher, I'll be taking my garbage to the dump myself. It's only a couple miles out of town and would probably save me $20 a month.

After army I was invited to a mlm event by former army buddy, not that I was told what it was. After the presentation of selling soaps or whatever, they took me to a closed room to coax me into joining. I just said I don't need any money, and they had no answer to that. Had an interview once where, instead of being for a secretarial position it was a guy with a room full of people trying to sell vitamins. I got up and left and dude chased me out to the hallway. The whole room got to hear me go 'sorry I'd rather not work for the people that bankrupted my uncle'. Uncle Mike had been convinced by a very similar situation that he could get rich and they automatically sent and billed him for so much stuff. The attic was stuffed with boxes of sawdust grade vitamins.

Pro Tip: plan your own funeral while you're alife. There are affordable and pretty options for your funeral and funeral homes offer contracts you can prepay or pay off over time and if you die unexpectedly, no one can abuse your loved one's grief to sell them atrociously overpriced nonsense. They can grieve in peace while your contracted funeral home takes care of everything. We have a contract with full service, meaning they'll even inform the bank etc. and send the death certificate wherever it's needed. It even includes grief counselling for the family.

U don't have to if u are somewhere where they allow people to be buried or cremated without them. Also embalming is not needed, refrigeration works on human remains like it works on our food. Also u do not have to buy the coffin from the funeral home, there are plenty of manufacturers who sell to families directly.

Gift Cards They are a free loan to the company that will result in either: 1. You spending more than you intended so that you “use up” the card 2. You leaving a small balance on the card that never gets used 3. The card gets lost or otherwise unused 4. In the case of restaurant, it often results in your server being under-tipped due to people tipping on the after gift card total. They are a bad gift. If you don’t know what to get someone, give cold hard cash.

I completely disagree. As long as it's a gift card for something that the giftee uses anyway, they are a perfect gift. And if someone gives a bad gift, that's on them, not the payment method. I too prefer cash, but will be grateful for a gift card any time as long as it's for something I actually use. It's definitely better than getting useless clutter that only collects dust in my shelf. I regularly get a 50€ gift card once a month from my employer that can be used for groceries and I can choose for which shop. They do that because in pur country that's not tax relevant, so I de facto got a 50€ raise. We use them up completely for our regular grocery shopping. It's very practical and definitely very kind.

They allow the recipient to buy something they wouldn't otherwise buy for themselves! For example, for awhile when I was young, I didn't really spend money on myself because I wasn't earning much, but then somebody gifted me a $200 gift card to an electronics store - so I was able to buy something fun guilt-free!

Wow, you need a better organization on your gift cards. I love it when people give us GC, we use them all and I keep track of what's on them. If you use up the card, the balance over is on you. But if it's a restaurant that you like, why not choose items that you also like, get a dessert to go if you're no longer hungry. You can also resell many of those cards on the Internet if you don't want them.

Just a heads up I am not going to be buying a timeshare but I will gladly listen to what you have to say. I won't be answering any questions or responding at all till the hour is over, is that ok?". They said yes, talked for an hour to a stone dead face and at the end my phone dinged and I said - "thank you for taking the time to explain it to me, bye." Dryer balls. Popular Mechanics for example experimented on the efficacy of them and found no beneficial effects.

I guess it depends on the use. In Summer to save money I wash my clothes in the Washing Machine. Then bring the clothes outside to dry in the sun. But the clothes are stiff. So bring back in and put them in the Clothes Dryer. And put the Dryer Balls in. Tumble with NO HEAT. And boom softer clothes. The science of why clothes line dried clothes is fascinating. Plus seems like a pretty cheap scam compared to others on this list. But maybe that is just me. Cause I'm a big old soft boy....can't stand non-gentle clothes ;)

I tried them and couldn't tell a difference. I suppose for those who *want* to see a difference, they will imagine it.

It helps suck up/bonk off some of the cat hair to have tennis balls in the dryer.

Probably only when you're a heavy smoker and have tainted teeth. My dentist told me that white teeth, if natural, are weak teeth.

I have been told to avoid the harsher toothpaste like this to avoid wear and tear on my teeth. I’m in my late 40s.

They do this by using an abrasive additive which can damage the enamel.

Free to Play / Freemium video games. Many of these have fantastic gameplay but they are almost universally slot machines with a coat of paint.

I have played a couple that were good for a few weeks, but as soon as you get to the point where you can't advance without paying, it's on to the next game.

I still have D&D miniatures, painted by my own hand. They were dirt cheap, but that was the 80s.

Here's the bigger question: did it make you happy? If it inspires joy of the painting/playing with/showing off, it wasn't a waste. A waste is looking back and wondering why the hell you invested in them.

All diets - they are intended to fail - so they can rope you into doing it all over again. Weight loss happens when the person stops ingesting as many calories as they start this XYZ weight loss journey. It is a vicious circle and 100% a scam. Keto, Atkins, slim tea, weight watchers, every single one

Kind of have to agree with this one; I don't like the products of either company, and don't think they're good value for money, but they aren't scams. Are you getting the product you paid for, and does it do what it claims, and you aren't forced to overpay due to a monopoly/duopoly? Not a scam, but not necessarily a good product either.

They are legitimate companies, but let's have a look on Starbucks. Is their coffee good? I mean, plain coffee, without all those additives. I had it only twice and in both cases the coffee was just bad. Maybe it was because I was used to really nice coffee, but that thing made me gag. So yes, saying that Starbuck is a coffee house is nearly a scam, because coffee house should have good coffee.

I don't think Starbucks is any better or worse than any of the other chains of coffee I've been to.
