From misleading statements companies tell to gain their customers' trust to propaganda governments spread to keep their citizens in line, Reddit users have recently been sharing some of the biggest lies that have been told in human history. 40 Of The Biggest ‘Lies’ Told In Human History That People No Longer Are Buying > …there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! The late, the great George Carlin.

Anti-vax parents that refuse to immunise their children should be charged with murder if their child dies of a preventable disease - or if their child transmits a preventable disease to another who dies. No ifs and buts.

Yea. It's been determined to complete certainty that vaccines have nothing to do with someone being in the autism spectrum, but that when children are tested for autism, it is typically around the same age as a childhood vaccination series, so despite the fact that there is no relation, too many people are drawing a casual link between things that are simply correlational, with no actual casual link.

yeah and one of odd versions of this was back in the days when you bought software on a CD and you had to accept their business terms when they were presented on screen when you tried to install it for the first time. E.i. you pay first, then you read the business terms and conditions, so you can decide if you want to opt out AFTER you have paid for the product.

Be careful, with this one! GameStation, a UK based software reseller, had embedded a clause in their terms and conditions that the user cedes legal ownership of his immortal soul to the company in 2010. According to their press release, 88% of users had no problem with this - or simply did not bother to read. Fortunately the company later issued an update nullifying the "soul clause". Those 12% who read this and explicitely opted out were rewarded with a bonus voucher for having read the T&C (source: https://bit-tech.net/news/gaming/pc/gamestation-we-own-your-soul/1/).

That's what has always bothered me about religion in general: the sheer arrogance in believing that after thousands of years of human existence and the uncountable number of philosophies and religions that humans have come up with to explain that which can never be adequately explained, that YOUR fairytale of choice is the only correct one. YOU DON'T KNOW THAT! No one does and no one ever will until the day they die and actually experience what, if anything, happens after. Believe what you want, that's your choice, but that doesn't make your belief irrefutably correct.

With a vast amount of luck dwarfing a high level of hard work you can have a chance of being whatever you want that might not sound too enticing but if you want something badly enough you can do things to increase your chances of achieving it. As a mixed race person I’ve heard a lot about skin colour causing a glass ceiling of what a (non white) person can achieve but I couldn’t disagree more m, you can go anywhere whether it’s a law office, a school or university, a hospital and see black people in high level roles, there’s been a black President and currently a black Vice President, if they could do it why can’t you?

Best person I've known, always left people smiling, and best friend I ever had. He was so well liked that places and other countries he visited for shorts period still resulted in him making good enough friends that people flew from various countries to attend his funeral. He died at 42, technically twice within 6 hours of showing symptoms, after contracting meningitis N. I try to be a good person, but he is way more outgoing than me, and imo, was a better person than I will ever be.

The only time I heard about this being true was when my brother worked at an engineering firm. It was run and owned by one family, and they really did take care of their workers. Need a day off for a concert? Fine, we will get you cover, and you can make it up with a little bit of overtime. Feeling sick? Do you need anything picking up? Do you need taking to any appointments? Dead relative? Boss, I need a few days off. Take a week with pay and let me know if you need another. When they had to close down due to the work being outsourced outside the UK, they used their contacts to try and get everyone a new job and helped with CV's and cover letters. When asked about the work load, they said, "No point in paddling a sinking ship"

The union saved my life. Literally. I got cancer just after purchasing our first home. It was for an early mammogram that our insurance provided. Mammogram at 39. Found cancer just as it was starting. Didn’t have to pay anything over a $10 copay. Yes, I’m in the United States. As part of the new-hire training process, Dollar General makes all employees watch a propaganda film they made about how "Unions are ineffective and only take your money." If they're so ineffective, why did you spend money writing and producing this video that you're paying me to watch? Out of concern for our best interests and the goodness of your hearts? How generous of you! Also, the line that, "all things can be resolved through HR," is hilarious because our "HR" is literally just a call center, probably outsourced to another country with more exploitable labor.

In which case send the politicians and their families who goaded their young men to do bad things that led to war off to shoot at each other before anyone else gets involved. Once they've killed each other elect more leaders who would hopefully be more circumspect the next time.

Perhaps, but a lot of times that reason is completely irrelevant, and in no way connected to your actions. Sometimes life just sucks, and things happens for no fault of yours or in such a way that it is not beneficial for you in any way. You are not the center of the world and hence those reasons won't always be related to you. Stuff just happens from time to time for completely random reasons.

Not necessarily a lie, but people have the misconception that Europeans invented slavery in the 15th century. Slavery is something that has existed across the world, for millenia. And there were large scale slave trade networks established by other powers, such as the Trans Saharan slave trade established by the Islamic caliphate after their conquest of North Africa.

It's basically been the status quo of any conquered or war defeated peoples to be placed into slavery. You can't let them go or have freedom they may rise up or attack you later. So it's either genocide, or enslavement. Not saying it's right just saying it's basically why and how it started. also because people are stupid and get racist about everything at the drop of a hat. did you see how he was a slightly whiter shade of white than me? better go kill that f*****g freak.

While slavery has been around since, well it has never not existed, what changed over time between the 15th and 17th century was the creation a codification in the American Colonies of race-based Chattel Slavery. It is also unique in that it was created at a time when slavery and feudalism where beginning to end in Europe.

THE CORRECT ANSWER. In 1909, American Business magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge, who gained his fortune with a retail store in London that garnered him the nickname “The Earl of Oxford Street,” coined the phrase, “The customer is always right.” The full quote is, “right or wrong; the customer is always right. Which was trained into his staff to never argue with customers.

Except, as a blanket statement, even that can be false. Things men (or women) are "traditionally" better at they might not be. Men can be amazing caretakers. Women can do math, just like me, a rocket scientist. People are individuals and should, in my opinion, be treated as such.

There are some jobs where size matters. Since, on average, men are larger than women, the type of work and the physical plant create a gender bias. My favourite example is high pressure welding. A weld made on the inside of a pressure vessel is stronger than a weld made on the outside. I know a number of people that always hire the smallest good welder they can find.

I feel like the most recent one is this idea of “the American dream”, that anybody from the lowliest street sweeper can be a successful billionaire if they just work hard enough. The older I get the more transparent that becomes as a veiled attempt to propagate capitalism by keeping the fast food workers and trash collectors of the population scurrying about working as hard as they can to serve the higher classes…It’s so obvious when you think about it for more than a few minutes, but it took me an embarrassingly long time to realise that the lucky few to have actually achieved this are the exceptions, not the rule.

And your card would not work, so you cannot buy anything if you don't have enough cash at home. Yes, at least here in the EU, our goverments guarante 100 000 euros of savings. Most of U.S. history, as taught to public schoolchildren, is claptrap. "Lies My Teacher Told Me" is an excellent source of actual history. The propaganda that is currently taught is just what the victors want told. In the U.S. that would be the victorious European colonists. British descendants simply continued what Spanish and Portuguese plunderers started. Thanksgiving, along with Columbus Day, is part of that propaganda.

Not a total lie, just the way it was over/misrepresented for many years when the main cause of obesity is simply eating too much. Just as these days the focus on sugar means that so many products are replacing it with artificial sweeteners (which I personally find disgusting) instead of people simply eating less of it.

The idea that fat is bad was a direct result of the sugar industry's ad campaign many years ago. Why? Because when fats are removed from foods, sugar is added to improve the taste. And sugar is addictive, so the more you eat it the more you crave. Fats are necessarily for many bodily functions, including brain function.

It's a ... bit different. Any and every nutrient contributes to making you fat, if your intake exceeds your expenses. And the other way - you can reduce your intake of protein and carbs to next to nothing, but take in all energy you do in form of fat, but still lose weight due to intake being lower than expense, ... it's kinda irrelevant what kind of fuel, it's the energy content accessible to your body that counts.

Any system that someone thinks they can exploit can be corrupted. The U.S. interventionists do so at the bidding of the wealthy class, they simply couch it in an anti-communist propaganda ploy. There needs to always be a boogeyman in order to separate the fearful minions from their tax dollars.

Caitalism is f*****g evil, if you can't see that you are part of the problem. I love how many people say they love capitalism, and then will b***h about somebody doing something because caitalism not only allows them to but encourages them too for the sake of making money. It's like no you can't b***h about how evil this person is for using capitalism in a way you don't like to make a buck when you yourself use capitalism to make money in ways that people don't like you hypocritical piece of s**t.

They do this on unhealthy food so that they can make it look healthier. "Less than 5g of sugar per serving", etc, have no meaning when the "serving size" is two crumbs, but it entices people. The smaller the serving size, the less of the "unhealthy ingredients" they can claim to have in it, and the better it will look.

This was a propaganda story started during WW2 to cover the use of radar and good intelligence. The coastal watchers of England were able to see the planes coming because of carrots, not because radar dishes could see them 30 miles away.

it was a pilot who had onboard radar for the first time and was shooting down many enemy aircraft (the powers that be said he had been eating carrots), obviously us Brits wanted to keep it secret so the carrot story came out...during WWII we also had a glut of carrots so in a bid to get people eating more carrots the story was put out effectively killing two birds with one stone

I was shocked at how good one company was. I was finishing a master's degree in 1981. Alcan interviewed me. When it became obvious that my French was not good enough for the location with the vacancy, the interviewers asked me how I would deal with a "hypothetical situation". When I answered, they asked a number of detailed questions. I was forced to switch to English to answer some of them. At the end of the interview, they said that they would like to hire me, but my French was not good enough. Two months later, I got a rejection letter and a cheque for $500 for consulting fees. My solution to the "hypothetical solution" worked.

This is true. It takes approximately 2 acres of land to feed 1 human for a year. This includes grazing area for 2 cows and room to grow, wheat, friuts and vegetables. There are only 15 billion acres of land suitable for cultivation on Earth. There are 8 billion people. We are already below the needed amount of surface space to feed everyone. Americans use 4 to 8 acres worth of food a year.

Not technically a lie, more, misinformation. At the time that this "myth" came about, it was actually merely suggested/estimated that it WOULD take around 7 years to for it to digest, as we do not have the right kind of enzymes to break it down efficiently. However, it would pass through your system before that would ever happen (usually within 2-3 days).

Exactly. I was stationed on an aircraft carrier. We occasionally had JP5 (jet fuel) spills, yet we never sank 🤷🏼‍♀️

Or that physics is real, sheesh.

Really? I-beams are mined from the ground in that shape and size? 😆

also TWO separate building will implode perfectly from the bottom into their own footprint when being hit on the side. I guess the jet fuel leaked all the way to the bottom and somehow burned hotter down there to cause the whole building to collapse before the top of the building that took a direct hit from jet fuel could topple over, but wait that goes against most laws if not all the laws of thermodynamics. strange that.

If the buildings, were designed and built in the same way, I would expect them to both act in the same way. As it was the subtle differences showed. The second tower to get hit, fell first. This is because the first tower was hit higher & more centrally, allowing the symmetrical shape of the building to resist the weight increase for longer. The second, hit off centre and a lower height causing more pressure to the core supports from the weight of the building above. Also, they did not 'implode perfectly from the bottom into their own footprint'; Huge amounts of the outer walls were forced outwards to around 500ft. That's what caused the damage to the neighbouring buildings and caused another to collapse under the weight of the rubble. Nothing to do with thermodynamics, but a lot to do with physics.
