Arguing with the anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, flat earthers, and climate change deniers is a heck of a job. If you've ever tried, you’ll know what I am talking about.
And even though you recognize the fallacy in their arguments, like saying that masks don’t help to stop the coronavirus, you sometimes need heavy artillery.
Luckily, some people who know what they’re talking about have done everyone a service and stepped in to school the science deniers big time. From biochemists to sport scientists, these are some of the most mic-drop moves in stopping the spread of misinformation.

I never knew that a simple apple had such a complex chemical composition. I learn something new everyday.
You can safely assume that this is true for everything natural you eat. Life is basically a very complex chemical reaction with MILLIONS of chemical compounds. Artificial foods tend to be FAR less complex, and their composition far more consistent. The main difference between natural chemical compounds and artificial chemical compounds is that, for the natural compounds, the "is this safe to eat or is it harmful" test has been done over and over for generations (by people getting ill or dying if they got it wrong).

These days, when there are so many science deniers, it may feel like arguing with them is absolutely pointless. But a 2019 study published in the journal Nature Human Behavior showed that it’s in fact worth arguing with them.
Philipp Schmid and Cornelia Betsch of the University of Erfurt in Germany conducted six experiments with 1,773 subjects. They assessed “how to mitigate the influence of a denier on the audience.”
The results showed that “not responding to science deniers has a negative effect on attitudes towards behaviors favored by science (for example, vaccination) and intentions to perform these behaviors.”

Polish cryptographers, Marian Rejewski, Jerzy Różycki and Henryk Zygalski cracked the Enigma code. They managed to crack the toughest code, used for the deployment of marine vessels. Dear God-botherers. If god drowned everyone except one family on the planet because they were evil then he believed that unborn children could be evil (not to mention all the born children). You anti-abortion types must really hate god for that.
Yes, but Christianity does actually teach that all humans have the potential to do evil baked into their nature, so they should believe that "unborn children could be evil". So there's no contradiction there. Even from a secular perspective, this would seem to be a true thing about humanity, as it happens.

Any "decent study of the bible" will reveal it to be no more than a collection of stone-age tales written by men to control others. Surely, an all-powerful god would be aware of the entire world he purportedly created, not just a measly piece of desert.

Facing deniers can be treated as a concerned and important effort to fight misinformation. The authors of the study suggest that “not turning up to the discussion at all seems to result in the worst effect.”
Meanwhile, showing up on an acquaintance's Facebook post, even if you think it's pointless, will surely do some good.
Interestingly, the authors claim that science deniers use the same rhetoric across domains. It means that “uncovering their rhetorical techniques is an effective and economic addition to the advocates’ toolbox.”

This is all over the place in truth and fiction. They really did make a pen that would write without gravity. Pencils are dangerous in space Bc of the particles being sucked up and the wood being flammable. They bought mechanical pencils but they were extremely expensive for some reason. The Soviet’s also bought the same pens.
Funny how this joke focuses on the pens design, but doesn't take into affect how many other inventions many of use on a daily basis from inventions intended for space travel like........ Scratch resistant lenses, Insulin pump, solar cells, water filtration, wireless headsets, CAT scan, baby formula, grooved pavement, air purifier, memory foam, LED's, and the list goes on.
I also sniggered, but I did not know this. I shall no longer snigger.

Every atheist I know loves Christmas. We love the celebration of family and friends, gift-giving, the food, and even some of the music (depending on the atheist in question, and if the lyrics aren't too spooky). I personally love that our modern "Christmas" is a combination of pagan tradition... and I get to watch evangelicals melt down over red cups.
Load More Replies...You can be religious and believe in science, not necessarily mutually exclusive.
So the person on the top is picking a fight where none is needed. However science and religion sometimes go hand in hand. Big leaps forward were made by priests and monks, including areas like genetics, astronomy and even evolution. So the second comment doesn't work either.
Thank you!! Came here to say the same! Believing in God doesn't mean denying science.
Load More Replies...Being religious and being scientific are not mutually exclusive. As far as the original comment that says atheist shouldn't celebrate those holidays, it is dumb as hell.
Religious people are not automatically "anti-science." One is not mutually exclusive of the other. That's just ignorant for people to say. There are a lot of dumb people who are neither and will argue any point because it makes them feel smart. The other point I would like to say is why can't people just be nice? We don't have to all agree on everything. Who cares what your neighbor thinks? Be a nice human being. Sheesh.
i agree, every step in the creation story correlates with every step of the evolution story, give or take a few million years
Load More Replies...Maybe some one should check the number of religious scientists and doctors? You know, before acting like a moron. Why do so many people suffer from it religion or science illusion? It very very often both.
The discoveries and contributions of these religious scientists and doctors came from their intellect and education, not from being "religious". They accomplished results through hard work, not through prayer.
Load More Replies...I'm an atheist but we celebrate Christmas. I mean, I don't believe there's a god. Not that there is a No-God. I am free. I'm even allowed to pray, I just don't think it might help. Christmas and Easter are important for me and my family, because it's a celebration of the circle of the year. That said, I think we don't have nearly enough non Christian holidays in Germany( only 2).
Who says we "happily" accept it?? I'd prefer to just have flexible leave I can use any day, rather than be forced to take specific holidays off.
I can see the logic in specific holidays off. If you know over half of the company is going to recognize the holiday, you may as well just let everyone take off because there is a limit to how much work can be done with so little capacity.
Load More Replies...Atheists don't have to participate in religious holidays. But my hope is that as a Christian they will know God directly. There is a story about a man in a flood who prays to be saved. Someone comes by with a boat to save him but he declines saying he prayed and is waiting for God. This happens 2 more times. The man dies. He gets to heaven and asks God why he didn't save him. God says, "I sent you 3 people with boats". People do pray, the answer is often a man in a boat... or science.

The problem with flu is it mutates, every single year, you can only be vaccinated against what is presumed to be close to the next outbreak. Flu is a very complicated virus, as are all virus, the doctors only do their best.

Add that willingness to accept wild theories to the algorithms certain websites use (google, youtube, facebook etc.) and all of a sudden you have more crazy. I recently had a bit of a discussion with a climate denier (why waste my time, right?) but when I said that I listen to the scientists rather than youtube, this person asked where I got my information. I told him that I liked to read the information on the nasa.gov site. He informed me that they were frauds. I have no knowledge myself, but I'm thinking those guys at nasa probably have a little more education than this joker, but he thinks he's smarter. Yikes.

The theory that vaccines cause autism has been completely debunked years ago. Did the anti-vaxxers not get the memo? It doesn't matter. They'll still believe rumour and hearsay over science.

Correlation isn't causation. Best example? Vaccines and autism. EVERYONE gets vaccinated in the US (or did). Ergo, kids with an autism spectrum diagnosis had a history of vaccination. So did kids without that diagnosis. And the guy who published the "causation" study later retracted it, and admitted he *made it up*....
Nah, Wakefield never retracted the study; the Lancet did. Wakefield still swears up and down that the MMR vaccine causes autism.

Evolution is just a theory. You can believe in both a faith and science. Every body just be better towards one another.
No, it's correct usage. I'm not saying what he/she is saying is correct, but the word is correct. Organic: "as elements of an organized whole." "in the course of gradual or natural development." He/she is basically trying to say it happens naturally—in all (interconnected, of course) parts of the body, with the body behaving as a living organism and not a machine, or something like that. But yeah, "naturally" would have been more apt.

And no one thought to get it for me later (I was born in 1960). At 57, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Before starting chemo I got the vaccination. The "good" thing about viruses and bacteria: They are very different from human cells, so (in many cases, at least) it is (to a certain degree) easy to make something that attacks them but not your own cells. The "bad" thing about cancer cells: They are your own cells, just mutated so they replicate like crazy. And it's not always the same mutation, either! There's many, many ways to f**k up a cell's DNA so it turns it into a cancer cell. So you can hardly tell cancer cells apart from normal cells, and the differences that ARE there are different in different people... good luck with that. Even these days most chemical cancer treatments inhibit the replication of ALL cells, cancer or not, and the hope is that the cancer dies more quickly than the whole person...
When the stupid is so big you have to leave the room to take a breath...
There is no vaccine for the common cold due to the high mutation rate. At least that’s what I remember learning in school
The problem with the "common cold" is that it's a catch-all name for hundreds of different viruses that cause mild symptoms. They would need to develop a vaccine for each one of those, and it's hard to justify the massive cost when mortality rate is so low.

The X chromosome is so much larger because it contains genes both sexes need to function. If the Y chromosome contained any genes beyond that females could not live without one.
Yes, the Y chromosome is smaller than the X chromosome, that is why men need both and why many religions are scared of the females.
More and more European countries make vaccinating mandatory. Unvaccinated children are banned from schools in those countries and parents can be forced to have their children vaccinated. And rightly so. Screw your "strong convictions" and "religious beliefs", our national health is endangered because of your b******t and we are getting tired of your stupidity.
100% agreed. To add: those who literally cannot get vaccinated due to medical conditions aren't being forced to do so because it puts them at risk! Interesting that she launches her argument by claiming that “anti-vaxxer” is an underhanded slap in the face, but then follows that by using the word “sheeple” to describe people who are not anti-vaxxers. Nothing she writes after that word has any value at all. She’s guilty of her own accusation.
And those who refuse to take vaccines are playing games not only with their own lives but with the lives of others. Most of us don't live alone on a desert island and someone who isn't vaccinated against a given disease could easily catch it and pass it on to others in a potentially deadly chain letter.
It's so sad to see one thinks that if their kids are momentarily healthy without vaccination, that's proof that this state will keep up indefinitely. It most likely won't. It would be funny to see their faces when they realize their mistakes, but it won't, because it would be to the expense of the child who'd deserve better.
Most likely the child will be fine, especially because other people have vaccinated their children. Much less likely to be fine are the immunocompromised children who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons and are vulnerable to any germs this unvaccinated child coughs their way.

I instantly tune out anyone who refers to grown women as 'girls' anyway, especially when they're talking about an educated woman in a high level position. I'm fairly certain this same man wouldn't refer to a male meteorologist as a 'weather boy.'
As a woman, I like the word "girl". While it's true that it's the opposite of "boy", it also the opposite of "guy". I don't run around calling guys "men" or "males" in informal situations, so I'll keep using my informal term, thank you. (Edit: I do agree that in a situation like this it isn't appropriate. If someone referred to Neil Degrasse Tyson as an "astronomy guy", I can't imagine anyone would find that objectionable. What exactly is the objection here? Male meteorologists are routinely referred to as "weather men". Is the objection to "weather" or "girl"? Yes, we rarely refer to adult men as "boys", though we do sometimes, like "I'm going to hang out with the boys" or "the old-boys network". But adult women routinely refer to themselves as "girls".
From everything I've read about Neil deGrasse Tyson, he might like to be called that. I understand he has a wicked sense of humor.

Not only is the timeline wrong, but the comment that vaccines are combating diseases that aren't contagious. That is the point of a vaccine - to eradicate contagious diseases!
I'm not sure when this was posted, but my kids started their first HPV vacs when they were about 11. Also, it's an STD, so dudes can spread it whether they show symptoms of it or not. I also had most of my cervix removed due to pre-cancerous cells from HPV I apparently had, when I was 25. Wish I could have had that vaccine and been able to carry a second child to term.
Did you know that you can get an exemption card for vaccination here in México?? Yeah :/
I got the vaccine and I didn’t have any issues other than soreness at the spot. I’ve had hpv before and I’ve had squamous cells in my cervix that thankfully were benign, but I didn’t wanna take my chances.

The problem with bacteria is that they usually also have some sort of (non-lipid) capsule around them, hence why regular soap doesn't kill bacteria right away (it does wash most of the bacteria off your hands though (soaping, rinsing and then drying with a clean cloth), they just don't die). Sooo... I guess we'll all be injecting ourselves with regular soap from now on, right? ;-) Or just rinsing our lungs with it, should work!
Any soap is better than not washing your hands at all ;)
Load More Replies...They have a point though, that the "anti-bacterial" active ingredient in soap doesn't kill the virus. So there's no need to choose an anti-bacterial soap or anti-bacterial hand wipe. Regular soap and regular wipe works just as well.
Corona is a virus, but without it's fatty membrane it's survivability on exposed surfaces is greatly reduced. Wash your hands, people, with any kind of soap! Even dishwashing soap will do, when nothing else is available.
lol, the woman above just explained why soap kills the virus. So this one is reverse stupid correcting the informed. Any old fashioned soap that dissolves fat (in this case virus'es lipid bylayer, which is fat layer) works great against this virus;. It does not need to be antibacterial.
At least this wrong person is trying to get people to wash their hands.

It is not the soap but the actions of washing hands that removes contaminates/disease from your hands. Soap helps get more of it off but the agitation of your hands/fingers is key. Hand sanitizer rubbed in might kill bacteria, but not the virus. WASH your hands

Here you will practically be harassed if you drink milk, because people belive in all kinds of c**p
It always made me wonder why is it we are completely okay with drinking the milk of what is effectively an "alien" animal to us, lets face it the milk isn't meant for us.
I'm pretty sure the cow thinks beef is also not meant for us.
Load More Replies...Who cares if he qualifies as a "scientist"? He's a science educator, and a damn good one at that. I *am* a scientist and I greatly respect his work.
Yes. Good "explainer of science". We don't have many of them in popular culture, and desperately need more.
Load More Replies...Sorry, but this not accurate. You also need to include the electricity that's needed to power the devices that people use to watch Netflix and the electricity that's needed to power the switches, modems and routers that are needed to get the signal from the server to the viewers. So yeah, the massive use of electricity does have an impact on emisions unless you decide to completely switch to renewable and sustainable energy sources like solar panels, wind turbines, and hydro electricity and abandon coal and nuclear powerplants.
That's what bothers me about electric cars. Yes, they don't emit co2, but we still charge them with coal factories.
Load More Replies...Maybe they're talking about the "emissions" generated by my Uncle Walter as he sits on our couch watching Netflix. Those are nasty and don't provide any transportation... except through our desire to get away from him.
*Notices the picture is of The Witcher* (Dang he's cute!) Seriously though, who writes this stuff?
Sorry to say so but I noticed that Conservatives indeed seem to have some competition going on who can post the most stupid c**p on the internet.
Competition is fierce! Trump still leads the pack, though.
Load More Replies...hot air. clearly he's never bothered to look at a single peer reviewed journal, or any of the thousands of videos, articles, interviews, and other material from scientists saying what a problem climate change is and how long we've known about it.
Actually, that's EXACTLY what he's pointing out. That these people posting all over the internet about how climate change is false have never looked at the science. That they've never provided proof to back up their claims, submitted said proof to scientific review boards, gone through the peer review process to verify and substantiate their claims, etc. Your comment is directed at wrong person. You're actually *agreeing* with Mr. Fishel...

I was thinking the Lorax and O'Hare Air but Spaceballs also works here
Load More Replies...I had to stop reading these. People who embrace ignorance and stupidity are scarier than Freddie Kruger.
Yep. Even if Freddy were real, he'd still be less dangerous. He's killed far less people than willful ignorance has.
Load More Replies...Are these science deniers really stupid or are they trolls trying to make a joke? I always thought no one can be that stupid.
Same but there are some scary as levels of stupid and denial out there. Intelligence is knowing enough to know that you dont know everything. So many people lack that insight its disheartening for our future as a species

At least you can admit to being wrong and have made the choice to be educated. Well done you :)
Load More Replies...I really wish people who love to post stupid s**t would research what they are posting for the validity of the topic. So many times I see something and know instantly that something is amiss and it takes me just a few minutes to find the truth behind the post. No I don't use snopes but I use credible sources and post the websites to that person's post to let them know just how f*****g dumb they are to post stupid s**t. It really scares me that people are that gullible and naive.
The dihydrogen monoxide gullibility "test" comes to mind. When asked if it should be banned from food many people said yes becsuse it sounded scary to them, not realising what it actually was.

i gotta remember some of these for the karrens out there like no. 14's NASA called they can see your stupidity from space
Also: 'Fat acceptance! Being obese is healthy! If you think obesity is unhealthy you're fat-phobic!' FALSE!! The term phobia specifically means a fear which is irrational. It's not irrational to fear obesity when the WHO, The UK Nat.'l Health Service, The US CDC, The US NIH, The Am. Heart Association, Cancer Research UK and The Am. Cancer Society have all issued official declarations that obesity is extremely dangerous to your health. In what way is the fear of dire health consequences irrational? Since that fear is not irrational, how could it properly be considered a phobia? Yes, call out the anti-science right who denies evolution and climate change. Call out the anti-science left on 'fat-acceptance' - esp. when a non-scientist-non-physician like Kelli Jean Drinkwater preaches it on the Ted stage. 'Enough With The Fear of Fat' she calls her Ted Talk. Wrong! People should be scared shitless of their obesity! It literally is as serious as a heart attack, and it literally is a matter of grave consequences.
Watch me explode over anti-vaxxers. I was born in 1950, so I was a little kid before many vaccines were available. I had chickenpox at age 5, measles (rubeola) at age 7, mumps age 11, rubella age 13. My dad took us to get our polio sugar cubes when I was six. He made up open our mouths to show him we swallowed it, all of it. But then, he had a cousin who had polio. I have retina scarring and a dimple on my cornea from the measles. My temp went over 105F 3 times, mom said they packed me in alcohol and ice water each time. I only remember twice. Then I spent 6-8 weeks in a darkened room, no TV, no books as they tried to limit the damage to my eyes. It is effing child abuse to not get your children vaccinated.
I have saved myself from looking like some of these people by the simple expedient of Googling the person I am talking to. It gives me the time and knowledge to realize that maybe I am the one who should keep her mouth closed and her ears open. If the other poster seems to be the idiot, I save time--and myself from unneeded stress-- by accessing the relevant FB. That usually tells me all that I need to know, like when it just isn't worth the bother, and I can only pray that person is felled by a falling piano before causing more harm.
