Arguing with the anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, flat earthers, and climate change deniers is a heck of a job. If you've ever tried, you’ll know what I am talking about.

And even though you recognize the fallacy in their arguments, like saying that masks don’t help to stop the coronavirus, you sometimes need heavy artillery.

Luckily, some people who know what they’re talking about have done everyone a service and stepped in to school the science deniers big time. From biochemists to sport scientists, these are some of the most mic-drop moves in stopping the spread of misinformation.

You can safely assume that this is true for everything natural you eat. Life is basically a very complex chemical reaction with MILLIONS of chemical compounds. Artificial foods tend to be FAR less complex, and their composition far more consistent. The main difference between natural chemical compounds and artificial chemical compounds is that, for the natural compounds, the "is this safe to eat or is it harmful" test has been done over and over for generations (by people getting ill or dying if they got it wrong).

The only thing that's "necessary for our survival as a species" is for enough individuals to survive just long enough to reproduce. If every female is having 8 babies, and 2 of them survive just long enough to each produce 8 babies, the species survives.

These days, when there are so many science deniers, it may feel like arguing with them is absolutely pointless. But a 2019 study published in the journal Nature Human Behavior showed that it’s in fact worth arguing with them.

Philipp Schmid and Cornelia Betsch of the University of Erfurt in Germany conducted six experiments with 1,773 subjects. They assessed “how to mitigate the influence of a denier on the audience.”

The results showed that “not responding to science deniers has a negative effect on attitudes towards behaviors favored by science (for example, vaccination) and intentions to perform these behaviors.”

Polish cryptographers, Marian Rejewski, Jerzy Różycki and Henryk Zygalski cracked the Enigma code. The Bletchley Park scientists with Alan Turing worked on codes, Enigma devices and principles built by the Poles in the process of deciphering. They managed to crack the toughest code, used for the deployment of marine vessels. Many sources, but, for example here: https://www.cia.gov/news-information/blog/2016/who-first-cracked-the-enigma-cipher.html

The Polish mathematicians were the first to decipher German military communications encrypted using Enigma machines before World War II and their work formed the foundation for later code-breaking at Bletchley Park, the famous British cryptology centre, during the war.

Yes, but Christianity does actually teach that all humans have the potential to do evil baked into their nature, so they should believe that "unborn children could be evil". So there's no contradiction there. Even from a secular perspective, this would seem to be a true thing about humanity, as it happens.

guys please don't let this guy make you form opinions about christians, a decent study of the bible will show that multiple occurences of the bible either legitimately happened, or were metaphors to represent occurences, even the creation story of the bible's order of events matches with the actual order that the earth formed, in millions of years instead of days

Any "decent study of the bible" will reveal it to be no more than a collection of stone-age tales written by men to control others. Surely, an all-powerful god would be aware of the entire world he purportedly created, not just a measly piece of desert.

Just to be clear -- not all Christians believe in a literal 6-day creation, or that dinosaurs and humans were on the planet together. Some of us believe God used evolution in creating the universe. Some of us have absolutely no problem with science (heck, God created it). We're not all brainless idiots.

Facing deniers can be treated as a concerned and important effort to fight misinformation. The authors of the study suggest that “not turning up to the discussion at all seems to result in the worst effect.”

Meanwhile, showing up on an acquaintance's Facebook post, even if you think it's pointless, will surely do some good.

Interestingly, the authors claim that science deniers use the same rhetoric across domains. It means that “uncovering their rhetorical techniques is an effective and economic addition to the advocates’ toolbox.”

This is all over the place in truth and fiction. They really did make a pen that would write without gravity. Pencils are dangerous in space Bc of the particles being sucked up and the wood being flammable. They bought mechanical pencils but they were extremely expensive for some reason. I just have a deep loathing for people who believe God is a cure-all while not giving two shits about the people who suffer from their decisions. Then again, I am bias because this practice is how I, and 11 other classmates, contracted tuberculosis in high school.

*sarcasm on* no, no, no, do you even know the risk of getting a vaccine? Bill Gates is killing children in Africa, and the government is tracking your movements with a microchip they put in you with vaccinations. Also, they give your children autism. *sarcasm off* Anti vaxxers, how the f**k can you defend this “logic”?

Every atheist I know loves Christmas. We love the celebration of family and friends, gift-giving, the food, and even some of the music (depending on the atheist in question, and if the lyrics aren't too spooky). I personally love that our modern "Christmas" is a combination of pagan tradition... and I get to watch evangelicals melt down over red cups.

So the person on the top is picking a fight where none is needed. However science and religion sometimes go hand in hand. Big leaps forward were made by priests and monks, including areas like genetics, astronomy and even evolution. So the second comment doesn't work either.

Religious people are not automatically "anti-science." One is not mutually exclusive of the other. That's just ignorant for people to say. There are a lot of dumb people who are neither and will argue any point because it makes them feel smart. The other point I would like to say is why can't people just be nice? We don't have to all agree on everything. Who cares what your neighbor thinks? Be a nice human being. Sheesh.

Maybe some one should check the number of religious scientists and doctors? You know, before acting like a moron. Why do so many people suffer from it religion or science illusion? It very very often both.

The discoveries and contributions of these religious scientists and doctors came from their intellect and education, not from being "religious". They accomplished results through hard work, not through prayer.

I'm an atheist but we celebrate Christmas. I mean, I don't believe there's a god. Not that there is a No-God. I am free. I'm even allowed to pray, I just don't think it might help. Christmas and Easter are important for me and my family, because it's a celebration of the circle of the year. That said, I think we don't have nearly enough non Christian holidays in Germany( only 2).

I can see the logic in specific holidays off. If you know over half of the company is going to recognize the holiday, you may as well just let everyone take off because there is a limit to how much work can be done with so little capacity.

Atheists don't have to participate in religious holidays. But my hope is that as a Christian they will know God directly. There is a story about a man in a flood who prays to be saved. Someone comes by with a boat to save him but he declines saying he prayed and is waiting for God. This happens 2 more times. The man dies. He gets to heaven and asks God why he didn't save him. God says, "I sent you 3 people with boats". People do pray, the answer is often a man in a boat... or science.

But the original poster isn’t necessarily wrong. The flu shot is not always effective as it is just a guess as what mutation the virus will take the following year. It could be 100% accurate, it could be helpful but not spot on, or it could be a complete miss.

The problem with flu is it mutates, every single year, you can only be vaccinated against what is presumed to be close to the next outbreak. Flu is a very complicated virus, as are all virus, the doctors only do their best.

This is quite humorous, honestly. Maajid actually does know his stuff (he's no "student"). Evidently so does the other guy. I'd classify this more as two knowledgeable guys being a bit dickish with each other (which tends to happen when people don't bother to get to know each other first). This also seems snipped out of context - we don't have the full exchange. Knowing who Majid and Harris are, I'm pretty sure I know what this is about.

Even if you'd put the entire flat-earth movement in a spaceship and circle the earth in any way they want, they'd be telling you that it's a trick with mirrors and projectors. But at least they are harmless and don't hurt other people with their nonsense.

They seem harmless but unfortunately if they're willing to deny that the earth is round they're willing to accept any conspiracy theory. Add that willingness to accept wild theories to the algorithms certain websites use (google, youtube, facebook etc.) and all of a sudden you have more crazy. This then compounds and willfully denying fact (the earth is round) and the scientists that promote that fact allows them, in their own minds, to deny the science behind vaccines and climate change. It doesn't take long for an idiot with a match to start a fire in a forest.

This is one of the difficult parts of trans people. I fully support transitions into what you feel/know you are, but physically men are stronger and those born as men will have a major advantage competing against females. I have yet to hear a good answer on this conundrum. Also this doesn't mean there is a debate on what bathrooms trans people can use.

Also, I can’t speak for the US’s pandemic plan, which was apparently ranked #1 in the world, but New Zealand’s was done with a flu in mind and had to be heavily rewritten when covid hit. So it’s not like it was word-for-word how this specific virus needs to be handled.

It's call planning, just like how you plan to put on am outfit for 2 hours before you're ready to go out. Now imagine if you took those two hours everyday for the next year and did something more productive like, oh, plan for a pandemic or natural disaster.

This is great, but I am also a nurse, and that looks exactly like the caps we wear into the OR. So I'm not sure what kind of caps this nurse wears. Plus any food service cap I've ever seen in like black netting... True that her hair should not be out, though, that defeats the purpose of the cap. And who knows what this lady's "hospital" job is, maybe she is a housekeeper or cook... BUT, there's also that doctor in Texas that's saying that miscarriages or STDs or whatever is caused by having dreams of having sex with demons?? Or some s**t like that?? Somehow she passed medical boards and is Legit a doctor (though hopefully not for much longer).

Also, even if it's true that you're that much smarter than everyone else, doesn't that just mean that you can't judge whether or not "this is so hard" for other people? Everyone's brain works differently. I cruised through complicated math and physics to graduate with distinction in an engineering degree, but my husband asks me a relatively simple question about the orbit of two planets and I can't understand what he's asking unless he draws it. I'm a visual thinker and if you test me the wrong way I would fail spectacularly. So something that you find easy could be difficult for someone else and that says nothing about who's actually more capable of coming to an informed conclusion.

I recently had a bit of a discussion with a climate denier (why waste my time, right?) but when I said that I listen to the scientists rather than youtube, this person asked where I got my information. I told him that I liked to read the information on the nasa.gov site. He informed me that they were frauds. I have no knowledge myself, but I'm thinking those guys at nasa probably have a little more education than this joker, but he thinks he's smarter. Yikes.

Neither of these are spherical (though the sphere is an instance of an ellipsoide) and the geoid isn't regular at all. But as with all things in science, for this purpose he's close enough!

Correlation isn't causation. Best example? Vaccines and autism. EVERYONE gets vaccinated in the US (or did). Ergo, kids with an autism spectrum diagnosis had a history of vaccination. So did kids without that diagnosis. And the guy who published the "causation" study later retracted it, and admitted he *made it up*....

No, it's correct usage. I'm not saying what he/she is saying is correct, but the word is correct. Organic: "as elements of an organized whole." "in the course of gradual or natural development." He/she is basically trying to say it happens naturally—in all (interconnected, of course) parts of the body, with the body behaving as a living organism and not a machine, or something like that. But yeah, "naturally" would have been more apt.

I had to get a measles vaccination at the age of 57, because I was in a group that kind of fell through the cracks. It hadn't become widespread when I started school (the time you get your boosters), my siblings all had it before I was born, so I didn't get it. And no one thought to get it for me later (I was born in 1960). At 57, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Before starting chemo I got the vaccination. Imagine if I hadn't had a doctor with that forethought to find out if I'd ever had it. I actually thought I had. I could have killed me. Thanks all you anti-vaxxers out there. Then, when I was pregnant with my first child, dr said blood tests showed I wasn't immune so I got the shot again after the baby was born... I'm 53, maybe I'm in that group too? I don't know about that, but glad I'm finally protected.

The "good" thing about viruses and bacteria: They are very different from human cells, so (in many cases, at least) it is (to a certain degree) easy to make something that attacks them but not your own cells. The "bad" thing about cancer cells: They are your own cells, just mutated so they replicate like crazy. And it's not always the same mutation, either! There's many, many ways to f**k up a cell's DNA so it turns it into a cancer cell. So you can hardly tell cancer cells apart from normal cells, and the differences that ARE there are different in different people... good luck with that. Even these days most chemical cancer treatments inhibit the replication of ALL cells, cancer or not, and the hope is that the cancer dies more quickly than the whole person...

The problem with the "common cold" is that it's a catch-all name for hundreds of different viruses that cause mild symptoms. They would need to develop a vaccine for each one of those, and it's hard to justify the massive cost when mortality rate is so low.

The X chromosome is so much larger because it contains genes both sexes need to function. The Y chromosome is only needed to turn a female "standart issue" human into a male, which only takes a handful of additional genes. If the Y chromosome contained any genes beyond that females could not live without one.

More and more European countries make vaccinating mandatory. Unvaccinated children are banned from schools in those countries and parents can be forced to have their children vaccinated. And rightly so. Screw your "strong convictions" and "religious beliefs", our national health is endangered because of your b******t and we are getting tired of your stupidity.

100% agreed. To add: those who literally cannot get vaccinated due to medical conditions aren't being forced to do so because it puts them at risk! The rest of the population being vaccinated reduces risk for the vaccinated and those who cannot have vaccines. Antivaxxers are scared and ignorant and want to believe there is a larger 'truth' other than what is. I'd pity them if they weren't going to kill us all.

Interesting that she launches her argument by claiming that “anti-vaxxer” is an underhanded slap in the face, but then follows that by using the word “sheeple” to describe people who are not anti-vaxxers. Nothing she writes after that word has any value at all. She’s guilty of her own accusation.

And those who refuse to take vaccines are playing games not only with their own lives but with the lives of others. Most of us don't live alone on a desert island and someone who isn't vaccinated against a given disease could easily catch it and pass it on to others in a potentially deadly chain letter.

It's so sad to see one thinks that if their kids are momentarily healthy without vaccination, that's proof that this state will keep up indefinitely. It most likely won't. It would be funny to see their faces when they realize their mistakes, but it won't, because it would be to the expense of the child who'd deserve better.

Most likely the child will be fine, especially because other people have vaccinated their children. Much less likely to be fine are the immunocompromised children who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons and are vulnerable to any germs this unvaccinated child coughs their way.

I instantly tune out anyone who refers to grown women as 'girls' anyway, especially when they're talking about an educated woman in a high level position. I'm fairly certain this same man wouldn't refer to a male meteorologist as a 'weather boy.'

As a woman, I like the word "girl". While it's true that it's the opposite of "boy", it also the opposite of "guy". I don't run around calling guys "men" or "males" in informal situations, so I'll keep using my informal term, thank you. (Edit: I do agree that in a situation like this it isn't appropriate. But e.g.a "girls' night out" it is perfectly acceptable.)

Hearing a grown woman referred to as a girl is a huge pet peeve of mine. NO, SHE IS NOT! SHE IS A GROWN WOMAN; DO NOT INFANTILIZE HER! I take any man who refers to women as 'girls' less seriously, and I seize on any chance I get to refer to those men, and any men around them, as 'boys'. Let 'em have a taste of how they treat women.

If someone referred to Neil Degrasse Tyson as an "astronomy guy", I can't imagine anyone would find that objectionable. What exactly is the objection here? Male meteorologists are routinely referred to as "weather men". Is the objection to "weather" or "girl"? Yes, we rarely refer to adult men as "boys", though we do sometimes, like "I'm going to hang out with the boys" or "the old-boys network". But adult women routinely refer to themselves as "girls".

Here's the truth on "climate change". It's become politicized. That means that people are using fear tactics to get the public onboard with whatever politicians want to do. That said, climate and the environment is in much worse shape than anyone knows. Things are going to get bad. Yes CO2 is a contributor but so is much more of what people are doing along with what nature itself is doing and will do on its own. It's gonna be bad.

Tell that to the families of women who died from cervical cancer. Including a 15 year old girl in the UK a few years ago. Plus it’s been proven that men can be affected by HPV as well so some are campaigning for teenage boys to have the vaccine too. Oh and it might not cause cancer, but more often genital warts and other infections. Who would want to be protected from getting genital warts right?! Morons...

I'm not sure when this was posted, but my kids started their first HPV vacs when they were about 11. Also, it's an STD, so dudes can spread it whether they show symptoms of it or not. I also had most of my cervix removed due to pre-cancerous cells from HPV I apparently had, when I was 25. Wish I could have had that vaccine and been able to carry a second child to term.

Perhaps we need to write a law that hospitals have to check everyone's social media before treating them. "Sorry dude, you doubt our medical knowledge and you have solid evidence that our cures do not work, so we are not even going to try." or "Yes ma'am, Billy could be saved by a simple vaccination, but as you have repeatedly stated on Facebook: No one is going to poison your kid with vaccines. So take him home and enjoy your last 5 days with him." Wonder what the reactions would be?

Hear, hear! And yes, let's call out anti-scientific-anti-intellectuals who, say: 'I only listen to muh mega-church Pastor!' But let's also call out this tendency of SOME stay-at-home moms to say: ''I only listen to other moms w/ their intuition and a mom's common sense!" Now I know that's definitely NOT ALL stay-at-home moms, probably a tiny minority of them. And some dads/men can be as anti-scientific-anti-intellectual as anyone. And yes, some excellent scientists are/were mothers or single ladies, and I salute them. But still, let's call out all of the the bullsh** in all of the forms it takes.

My grandfather got covid, got hospitalised, survived and a week later, he died because covid wrecked his lungs so bad he couldn't keep up saturation levels. Basically: he was feeling like he suffocated for multiple weeks befor he died. He wasn't counted as a covid death because he was technically covid free when he died so death rate is even higher than described in this post. He was 91 and had a good life, but this is a horrible death you wouldn't wish upon your worst enemy! A young collegue of mine became ill with covid as well, survived fine but now suffers from a lifelong heart condition as a result of covid. So even if it's not deadly, the consequences of covid do shorten the lifespan and can influence your health for the rest of your life!

CFR and number of deaths are NOT the same thing. An average year in the UK sees 20,000 people die from influenza. In addition we have had nearly 40,000 in the first half of the year from Coronavirus. The flu is downplayed and it shouldn't be. Although the CFR is low the number of infections is huge, hence the deaths..

YEP. Just regular, normal, cheapass soap will do the trick! ALL cells have a lipid bilayer (not that a virus is a cell, but they still have this layer to protect their DNA/RNA). The problem with bacteria is that they usually also have some sort of (non-lipid) capsule around them, hence why regular soap doesn't kill bacteria right away (it does wash most of the bacteria off your hands though (soaping, rinsing and then drying with a clean cloth), they just don't die). Sooo... I guess we'll all be injecting ourselves with regular soap from now on, right? ;-) Or just rinsing our lungs with it, should work!

They have a point though, that the "anti-bacterial" active ingredient in soap doesn't kill the virus. So there's no need to choose an anti-bacterial soap or anti-bacterial hand wipe. Regular soap and regular wipe works just as well.

Corona is a virus, but without it's fatty membrane it's survivability on exposed surfaces is greatly reduced. Wash your hands, people, with any kind of soap! Even dishwashing soap will do, when nothing else is available.

    Hans

Both are right. Antibacterial soap really is just marketing and has little additional benefit, but any form of soap dissolves fats, and the corona Virus has a kind of shell of fats, thereby being inactivated by simple soap. Dishwashing agent is even more effective.

    Amy Grant

lol, the woman above just explained why soap kills the virus. So this one is reverse stupid correcting the informed. Any old fashioned soap that dissolves fat (in this case virus'es lipid bylayer, which is fat layer) works great against this virus;. It does not need to be antibacterial.

It is not the soap but the actions of washing hands that removes contaminates/disease from your hands. Soap helps get more of it off but the agitation of your hands/fingers is key. Hand sanitizer rubbed in might kill bacteria, but not the virus. WASH your hands

I went on the "giant drop" ride in Aussie. You sit in a single row of several ppl with rollercoaster harnesses, are lifted up, held between 20-40 seconds then dropped. From 115M(317 feet). While I was up there, I looked at the horizon of the sea, and it had the ever so slightest curve, it just didn't seem the dead straight I'd always seen from the ground. Btw that ride was new at the time and tallest in the world and held that title 14 years

If I believe in global warming but I am wrong then we will, completely unnecessarily, reduce pollution and move towards sustainable and cheaper energy forms whilst also ensuring we recycle more materials and alleviate potentials shortages of same - all for nothing! Conversely, If I believe global warming is a scam, and I'm wrong, I will waste limited resources, permanently pollute the land and air, cause a runaway effect that it seems likely we will be unable to stop and possibly end human life on this planet. Logic dictates that you'd rather risk being wrong when the outcome is beneficial rather than world ending..

I mean, alcoholism should be part of the discussion, but back when I was still drinking (alcoholic here), most I ever got down in a night (and shortly before blacking out) was 1/2 L. So even if you're an alcoholic there's a definite limit. People discovered that you feel the effects of hard liquor less after doing some energy drinks, but people's bodies still kept count and MANY people have died after pounding that combo, and guarantee they didn't top out at 3L a night either.

Fear sells. That's one of the sad truths about it and it's a tactic that gets used even in way's that some people don't catch. Rogain makes you fear your own hair loss. The fear of aging drives the cosmetics and skin care companies and the fear of death sell's way more than it should. Fear is a driver that's been over ruining everything from the News to what cloths you purchase. Millions of people upgrade their phones almost every year when the phone they have is perfectly fine, but you fear not having that latest and greatest gadget.

To me its weird that you show a pic of 2 things that clearly arent 100% te same yet you try to make a point with it of them being the same. Im not a scientist but even I can see the green dots on the left thing.

True that, but it's legal to get the suckers addicted to Adderall. So let's do that.

What about if you take the enzyme lactase? You can buy it in pill form. It's usually the inability to produce the enzyme that causes the problem. It's very, very common.

It is good to point out the specific things wrong with article. That's great. Milk is definitely better for you than soda, really sugary drinks, etc. But, now we have many vegan sources of milk-like beverages. You can get cashew milk, soy milk, almond milk, rice milk, and on and on. These are great alternatives that don't harm animals. Also, cows are pumped full of hormones and antibiotics. Long term there may be negative effects from the dairy industry to us physically; it definitely exacerbates climate change and animal cruelty currently.

'are c-sections causing autism' i-i doubt the way you came out of your mother's womb would impact your mental health, also they are life saving in cases where the cervix isn't dilated enough for the baby to get through, like my own mother's.

Dairy is indigestible to 65% of the population. It is breast milk for baby calves and is full of growth hormone.

accurate about drinking too much. discovered decades later i'm not really lactose intolerant. just that as a kid i used to drink too much[500ml+ and get flatulence and other gastro problems. I drink a glass or two a day now. once in the morning and once at night if i feel like it. not a problem.

It always made me wonder why is it we are completely okay with drinking the milk of what is effectively an "alien" animal to us, lets face it the milk isn't meant for us.

Who cares if he qualifies as a "scientist"? He's a science educator, and a damn good one at that. I *am* a scientist and I greatly respect his work.

Yes. Good "explainer of science". We don't have many of them in popular culture, and desperately need more.

Sorry, but this not accurate. You also need to include the electricity that's needed to power the devices that people use to watch Netflix and the electricity that's needed to power the switches, modems and routers that are needed to get the signal from the server to the viewers. So yeah, the massive use of electricity does have an impact on emisions unless you decide to completely switch to renewable and sustainable energy sources like solar panels, wind turbines, and hydro electricity and abandon coal and nuclear powerplants.

That's what bothers me about electric cars. Yes, they don't emit co2, but we still charge them with coal factories.

Maybe they're talking about the "emissions" generated by my Uncle Walter as he sits on our couch watching Netflix. Those are nasty and don't provide any transportation... except through our desire to get away from him.

hot air. clearly he's never bothered to look at a single peer reviewed journal, or any of the thousands of videos, articles, interviews, and other material from scientists saying what a problem climate change is and how long we've known about it.

Actually, that's EXACTLY what he's pointing out. That these people posting all over the internet about how climate change is false have never looked at the science. That they've never provided proof to back up their claims, submitted said proof to scientific review boards, gone through the peer review process to verify and substantiate their claims, etc. Your comment is directed at wrong person. You're actually *agreeing* with Mr. Fishel...

I read an essay from the 1890s where a scientist was questioning climate change from coal burning. He went to help found the Sierra Club.
