(1) Besides the gov't Not being able to censor what citizens say (with a few exceptions), Freedom of Speech also means the gov't can not compel citizens to say something (like the Pledge of Allegiance in the US).
I hate the pledge of allegiance. It's pledging allegiance to a *flag* - why would I have allegiance to a flag? I at least could understand if it was just pledging allegiance to the US in general, but why is the flag the central part of it? And also take out god - like for all the citizens who aren't christians. As a teacher, I have a massive number of students who think that having an explanation for not meeting a deadline or getting a failing grade they are entitled to extensions or extra credits. Not American, but I don't think that's _quite_ what it means, more that the government cannot censor what you say, whether it's critical of them or not, but you can (and should) still be held to account for libelous and/or slanderous statements. As Alex Jones is still finding out.
The first central issue is whether it's a governmental entity. Like with search and seizure - if there isn't a governmental entity behind it, then it cannot be a 4th Amendment violation. If there is not governmental entity behind the consequences for one's speech, then it's not a 1st Amendment violation. Private parties who act separate from the government aren't held to the same standards. If a private party unlawfully seizes the property of another, it's theft, or a person, it's kidnapping. So there can be consequences, but not the same as the consequences that a government entity would suffer

Well, no. There are 240+ years of Federal and Supreme Court rulings that have both clarified and expanded the protections granted by the 1st Amendment. So yes, there are circumstances where it does, or can, offer (some) protection from retaliation (not just from Government).
It's also not just a US thing. The right is preserved in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is granted formal recognition by the laws of most nations.

Not exactly. It means the government may not censor your speech, but this is not an absolute right. The government absolutely can regulate speech that is considered harmful to society (threatening violence, for example).

Actually what it means is that the government doesn't have the right to censor your speech. They can't prevent you from publishing a magazine, or starting a newspaper, or posting whatever you want, where ever you want. But the first amendment does have limitations, you can't incite violence, you can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater when their isn't one, you can't publish child porn. Where people seem confused is the fact that, while you can publish, or given the internet more likely "host" whatever you want, or stand on a street corner shouting whatever nonsense you wish, no one is required to GIVE YOU A PLATFORM. Going on any website, is like going to someone elses house, You can say whatever you want, but they're entitled to bar you from the premise if they don't like what it is. The interpretation and implication of free speech varies from country to country. In some countries it literally does mean you can say what you want whereas in other they take a more structure approach to it. BLANKET STATEMENTS ARE FOR AMERICANS, THE REST OF THE WORLD IS MORE DIVERSE.

That pretty much every machine requires maintenance. Think dishwashers, washing machines, cars, mowers, etc.
They aren't magic boxes. And they will last longer if you know how to maintain them.
My mother in law is in her 80s and until recently didn't know that the dishwasher needs its filters cleaning every so often.
Edit: since this blew up a bit, for those that would like to locate their dishwasher's filters, they're different for every make and model. You'd do well to Google the make and model of the unit and see if you can find a manual. Maybe even YouTube will have some information (YouTube is a great resource for learning about things). Taking my dishwasher as an example, there are some reasonably obvious plastic pieces in the bottom of the washing area that can be slid out/unscrewed (there are 3 parts to my filter). Rubber gloves when touching them might be a good idea. Cleaning them is as simple as taking a brush and some soapy water to them to remove all the gunk before reinstalling. You can also buy a plastic bottle full of chemicals that you put into the dishwasher. You run a cycle and the chemicals clean throughout the unit.
I do both because I like a clean dishwasher. I do it every month or so, or whenever I notice that dishes aren't getting as clean as they should or some 'not clean' smell.

How a 4 way stop works. Every hurricane in Florida we've several traffic lights go out. People are supposed to treat it like a 4 way stop, but instead they do this nonsense, "oh, he went? 10 more of us will go! It's fine!!"

In the UK it used to be the case that stamp duty (a tax on property purchases) did NOT work like this. That the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth, is directly related to the health of your heart and how much inflammation exists in your body.
There is *some* relationship between the health of your teeth and gums and the rest of your body (not necessarily your heart). Saying "direct relationship" is overstating it because it is saying that your tooth/gum health is always in proportion to the health of your heart, which is clearly not true (I currently have an ulcer on my gum and a perfectly healthy heart).
Unsolicited advice is generally going to be taken as criticism. Criticizing the people in your personal life creates distance.
Butting in where you aren't wanted is going to harm your relationships with other people, and they're going to take your opinions and advice less seriously over time because they'll think of you as a noodgy know-it-all.
Overbearing people get tuned out.
Instead, first ask yourself if your advice is even needed. Does this affect you? Is this an emergency? Is anyone going to be harmed if you don't put your oar in?
Are you being asked for advice? Or is this person just sharing information about their day and building their relationship with you?
And if you do need to weigh in, try leading with, "May I make a suggestion?" Otherwise, you're going to rile the other person up.
And on the flip side, if you have a noodgy know-it-all in your life, it's best to simply pause them with a calm and polite, "thanks, but I didn't ask." If you try to explain your life to them, they see it as an invitation to be even more overbearing.
My way of giving advice is to say "this happened to me and what I did was X, but obviously your situation is different."
That in a lot of vehicles, when you turn on your hazard lights, it disables the brake lights. This is bad because I have seen in rain storms people will drive with their hazards on. They think they are being extra safe but in reality they are making it more dangerous, because now the person behind them won't know when the person in front is stopping.

How to navigate the city/town/area they're living in without GPS. GPS is great, especially when going somewhere new, but it's very useful to have an internal map of your own town in your head.
My sense of direction is...shaky, at best. Although I live on the West Coast, because of the weird coastline shape the fastest way to get to the beach from here is to head directly south; you'll arrive in 10 minutes as opposed to over an hour going due west. This kinda messed with my whole N/S/E/W perceptions. Additionally, I have to envision the living room of the home I grew up in, and orient it in my head to match where I am to figure out directions. "OK, it's early afternoon and I'm pretty much facing the sun, which means it would be shining in the side window, not the front, so behind me is roughly North."
