194 Breathtaking Photos Of Dancers In Motion Reveal The Extraordinary Grace Of Their Bodies
The NYC Dance Project is an initiative designed to showcase the magical world of dance and dancers. It was founded by fashion/beauty photographer Ken Browar and dancer/photographer Deborah Ory, and the beautiful pictures you can see here are taken from a book called The Art of Movement that's soon to be released.
Inspiration for the project came when Ken and Deborah were decorating their daughter's room. They wanted to fill it with pictures of contemporary dance stars (their daughter's an aspiring ballerina), but unable to find many they decided to photograph those dancers themselves. They got in touch with a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre and asked if they could photograph him. He agreed, word quickly spread, and soon Ken and Deborah had several requests for collaboration from other members of the NYC dance community. Take a look at some of our favorite pictures below. The Art of Movement is released on October 2 and you can pre-order it here.

Breathtaking. As a ballet fan from childhood I am fascinated by the pictures....
Fluidity to the Nth degree. Not to mention the gorgeous stunning gowns.
Actually gasped out loud. Perhaps she is Mother Spring, waking up nature's beauty after a sleepy winter.
There are no words for how much pain these ballerinas go through........ but the look on the audiences faces is enough for everything they have gone through. Thank you to all ballerinas around the world.
I'm going this way - no that way! I hope my dress remembers to follow me.
Yeah, just tell them to try to do 10% of what the dancers do and then you'll just see them shut up and walk away head down.

She is not a ballerina, she is a modern dancer

The yards and yards of silk and organza move so perfectly with the dancers.
If there were such a thing as a Flamenco ocean wave, this is what it would look like.
Yeah, no biggie, I'ma just suspend the laws of physics by suspending myself here in mid-air for a bit.
This one's my favourite. The strength needed for that move, yet he's able to convey a look of complete relaxation and ease...amazing.
So lovely, and so relaxed. I hope he didn't forget that he's in the midst of a photo shoot!
Oh my goodness. Depending on one's general view of life, this could represent a beginning or an end.
That is crazy! The strength. HOW do they make it look so, so easy?!?!?
Years and years of hard training. It's impressive.

Well there it is all you facebook hacks a man in a dress or flowing fabric and he looks just as amazing as the women!
Such beauty is almost too much for this mere mortal to bear. The exquisite gown and her soaring height are spectacular.
The dresses are lovely, but I wish you had captured more of the female form.
Потрясающая красота , великолепная пластика моделей и отличная работа фотохудожника !
This is super elegant and exquisitely beautiful! Well done! Perfect shot! Beautiful lighting!
This. Such pain it requires to create such mind-blowing, effortless-appearing beauty.
And then you look at this picture and the dream is ruined: Ballet-dan...1__700.jpg

actually, after a while your feet strengthen enough that it doesn't hurt anymore
Well, that's not entirely true. You get stronger, so you can ignore the pain. While your feet, they always look like minced meat :)

Oh my goodness. She could be an angel who quietly flutters above all brides.
Anyone who believes ballet is frivolous needs to see these photos. The human strength and discipline required to achieve such impossible beauty is mind-blowing. Perhaps the only difference between Olympic athletes and ballet athletes is that these dancers must make it look completely effortless.
The power and strength of these athletes of ballet seems superhuman. I could not watch the film the Black Swan because the director had portrayed, especially with sound, the physical pain and brutal impact on the feet that was too visceral, too palpable for this wimp to withstand.
Ah! The audacity of flying! Such a pleasure in the freedom that embodied knowledge can give!
A glorious cheetah; silent and utterly still before exploding in pure muscled energy.
It's the butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your throat. It regulates your hormones.

He reminds me of Prince just a bit. Also reminiscent of a Robert Mapplethorpe type of photo. This man's stillness almost makes it feel necessary to whisper while observing.
This is Artem Ovcharenko, a soloist / principal of Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre 🎭 he's absolutely stunning!

And you would have found out by googling it because they don’t even share a little similarity.

Extremely graceful!!!!!!!!!!!!!So Pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gorgeous. I wish the dancers were credited as well - I'd love to know who they are and where they dance.
I understand they are credited in the coffee-table book. I recognized some of them--Misty Copeland, Julie Kent, Tiler Peck and Robert Fairchild, Chase Finlay--but I do wish there'd been more captions.

I love the pictures as I am a ballerina myself, dancing with one of the best ballet schools in all of the World.
