Who wouldn't like to achieve financial stability? However, in a world that encourages instant gratification, many of us succumb to the allure of overspending, accumulating debt, and therefore end up living beyond our means.

Interested in what are the biggest pitfalls to avoid, one Reddit user made a post on the platform, asking everyone to share what they believe to be the biggest money mistakes. And to their delight, many responded.

Retirement might seem far away, but the longer we ignore our personal budget, the harder it will be to catch up down the line.

Why buy designer clothes for children? They don’t understand what it is in order to appreciate it and they grow so fast, they’ll have outgrown them in a few months/weeks. Get them something they’ll actually need!

My STBXH.

- Quit his job 2 weeks after we bought our house, and then didn't tell me for 2 months.
- Has been unemployed for a minimum of 6 months every consecutive year since 2019.
- Forgot to transfer his (very small) portion of money to our joint account on payday last month, causing several of our bills to bounce. Got all defensive when I tried to explain why forgetting something like that is extremely risky, and when I tried to explore ideas on how we can prevent recurrence from something like that happening again.
- Bailed/ghosted on our tax appointment last year. As in, never showed up in the first place, and refused to answer phone calls and text messages, leaving me to fend for myself during the tax appointment.
- Suggested we take out a personal loan to cover our escrow shortage. But remember, he's unemployed. So GUESS WHO would be paying back the loan, even though we're already paycheck to paycheck? That's right, yours truly.

I could go on and on, but I'll stop there. I can't wait to be divorced from this deadbeat.

Having six kids while being unemployed, not intending to work at all in your life. Living on financial aid. Complaining that financial aid is too low. Cursing the state organisation providing financial aid on social media.

I am child free by choice. Mainly because I have no desire to have kids (and now I’m too old). In the past when people asked me why, I usually said I simply could not afford them. It is amazing how many people thought that was an unacceptable answer, and surely I could make it work. Well, yeah, I would have had to, but I don’t want to. I cannot afford a second house worth of human, you know.

My cousins aren't happy with my father as they think he should've done more and my siblings and I aren't happy with the way things went. We were or are not rich but my father had a fixed income. So many people treat their uterus like a clown car and make the older ones take care of the new ones. There should honestly be a legal limit on how many kids you have if you're not independently wealthy enough to hire help instead of parentifying your kids. I read so many tragic stories about kids being neglected because there are just too many of them to care for at home.

Now some crazy Hindus are trying to convince other Hindus to have more kids to prevent India becoming a Muslim predominant country. My parents were strict believers in zero population growth so after my little brother was born he got a vasectomy. Him and his best friend went in the same day for the same operation. My dad's doctor deliberately made it irreversible. The doctor for his friend though was a good christian so his was reversible. About eight years later it reversed itself. It was calculated a few years ago in Hungary, how much money you'll need to riise a kid till his/her 18th years, in normal conditions nothing fancy. It was around 30 miilion forints. What equals with roughly 80.000 euros. But that was a calculation made like 5-6 years ago, and in a coubtry, where the healthcatre, educational system is free (paid by taxes), so families have less worries.

Seeing an obviously poor mother with numerous children in tow, all looking unkempt, dirty, with Dollorama store grocery bags just makes me think of how those children don’t stand a chance in life! They don’t have proper nutrition, good or safe role models or responsible parents. A lot of parents aren’t good parents and I am aware of that but generally speaking many poor people lack the emotional intelligence or skills to be good, nurturing parents capable of providing a future for their children. Sadly, most of these disadvantaged children go on to repeat the poverty cycle.

Unfortunately the people who cannot afford to have children are also the least educated on birth control. That is aside from the men who leave after kids are born, women who are literally forced to have kids that they cannot afford, and, of course, religious crazies.

Some of the costs parents are hell bent on spending are unnecessary. If you want to put away some money for a fund, make it for something that could be for anything. Allow extended kin to add to it. Maybe the kids don't want to go to university nor community college. Braces. I wasn't planning on getting mine braces unless she absolutely needs them. For purely aesthetics, wanting perfect teeth is not an essential need. I'm not saying it's bad to get them. But so many parents just put their teen in braces like it's a right of passage and go into debt. Just like taking out a second mortgage to pay for their college. Insurance may not cover the costs if it's an unnecessary procedure for some people. Affordability is only relative to the needs and lifestyle of the family. That being said, I have my one and only. It's staying that way for other reasons.

Firstly, this is why you get insurance. Even if you're the best driver ever and will never have an accident it doesn't mean someone won't smash into you. Secondly, you should be factoring insurance and basic maintenance into the costs. And most fancy cars cost way more than people expect. Even things like tyres cost double, triple or more than a "regular" car. My first car was second hand when I got it, and I drove it for roughly 20 years. In the end it was so worn out I sold it to a wrecker (it as 25ish years old by that point). Unless something drastic happens my current car will be the same.
