I Turn My Son’s Food Into Healthy Meals That Look Like Cartoon And Pop-Culture Characters (30 New Pics)
My name is Laleh and I am 35. I have a son Jacob (6) and a daughter Charlie (19 months old). In May 2015, I turned my son's spelt pancakes into a lion for a bit of fun and he loved it! Every few days he would ask if I could make him a character from a movie, book or toy that he had seen. Jacob and I would get creative in the kitchen and discuss the ingredients that we were using and the benefits. For example, when he was 3, we would talk about how Kale was a superfood. He would ask why, and I would say 'because superheroes love eating it' - that was a winner for him!
I started posting our creations on my personal Facebook page and had such a positive response that I thought I would create an Instagram account to inspire other parents to get creative in the kitchen.
Within a month our page went viral and gained media attention from all over the world with media coverage from Time Magazine, Huffington Post, The Today Show USA, The Today Show Australia, Sunrise, ABC TV, Disney Channel Australia, and shout outs from celebrities, such as Martha Stewart and Ashton Kutcher to name a few. Ellen DeGeneres has even shared an artwork that I made of her on her show!
Within the last two years, we have been lucky enough to work with some amazing companies including Disney, Nickelodeon, Universal Pictures, Barcelona FC, Jamie Oliver, 20th Century Fox to name a few.
We would never in a million years have thought that our little kitchen creations would turn into a full-time business but we love every minute of it!
We love to use fresh, healthy produce and no refined sugar or preservatives. All our creations are dyed using vegetables and natural powders such as activated charcoal.
Check the other meals that I've shared on Bored Panda.

Mash potato, chicken, noodles (made for Valentine's day - not for eating).
To gorgeous too eat! Now this takes "playing with your food" to a whole new level.
Baby Yoda
Hei Hei From "Moana"
Organic eggs with salad.
That one is great! And to be honest, I love the simplicity here - it looks like something you could actually assemble in a reasonable amount of time, and without coloring food in weird shades. It is much more relatable and actually looks like it is supposed to be eaten. :)
Hi Diane, I didn't know a fellow food artist! But yes you missed a lot! Firstly - two hard boiled eggs, secondly there is definitely no pins of any kind holding this together. How much more did you want a child to eat?

Spelt and cocoa pancakes with fruit.
That looks amazing! That's a lot of talent! But with those dishes that are supposed to be warm..wouldn't they be a tad cold once finished?
Pretty sure they can be microwaved. Or put back in the oven. ?
Load More Replies...haha thanks George :) It honestly doesn't take long. The trick is to prepare all the cold elements like the eyes etc whilst the hot elements are cooking :)
Load More Replies...Google says it’s an oatmeal like grain. I don’t see that, and now I’m even more confused.
Load More Replies...Awwww... damnit even dogs have a better love life me ;-; jk this is amazing and I love it
I cringe at the thought of how much handling those pieces of whatever they are have had.

So you're feeding your kid a plate of dried chilis? I'm pretty sure this isn't "healthy" or normal.
I don't think all of these are for her kids, just for some art fun, yknow?

My Daughter would love this! Thanks for the idea :) she's 5 and I've already been making her favourite cartoons from food for a few years now as she's a fussy eater ..gotta try this now!
Nah not that night Diane they had McDonalds! But you're right they were in the basement - in chains.

There's not much but if you look closely there is slight golden-ing of the bread/toast.

Mash potato with octopus.
Let's just say I have burnt my fingers a few times ! :)
Load More Replies...I've heard that if octopus isn't fully cooked it can crawl back up your throat... O_O
I don’t think that’s true... I hope it’s not
Load More Replies...I understand that your opinions differ but isn't it tiresome to comment something negative on every picture? Why read this post at all? It's weird cause I see you comment alot on other posts and they're usually lovely.

Veal ravioli with carbonara sauce.
Eating a calf that's under a year old, that probably hasn't seen its mother since a day or two old and that's been kept in a calf pen hardly big enough for it to turn around it's whole life isn't really the definition of 'living it up'
Load More Replies...What’s the blue? It looks like blueberry icing? Is it carbonara sauce with food colouring in?
The Grinch
Spatchcock roast with spinach mash potato and roast vegetables.
This is a fantastic representation of Diane A. Absolutely perfect !!!
Knowing the irrational things I had been afraid of as a child, I am positive that the grinch/chicken combo would have given me nightmares at that age. :D Her children must be braver than I was.
Lol! This was made for The Food Network :)
Load More Replies...duh nuh nuh nuh NAH nuh, duh nuhnuhnuh NAH nuh, you're delicious, Mr. Grinch.....
I think the point is that the kids will be excited to eat it, when they see it. Which was the original point of this food art, to make kids excited to eat good food.

Sweet mash potato with couscous, turkey meatballs and veggies.
I am shoving my head into my chair right now lol
Load More Replies...Me too! Well, I don't think I will attempt Winnie the Pooh (I don't have the talent for that), but I could definitely arrange mini meatballs in a cute circle around couscous with veggies shaped by cookie cutters. (She probably shaped hers by hand though.) This is a really good one.

Mash potato, wild rice (not made for eating).
That would be the only plate of food you can eat and it will give you the munchies.
(just so you know, i dont acctually smoke)
Load More Replies...it's art, this as a meal wouldn't be very nutritious anyways
Load More Replies...No Diane I'm not a troll I am just defending myself. You have gone on pretty much every creation and spoken negatively. Maybe go through them again and see.
Load More Replies...Mama Coco
Mash potato with vermicelli noodles, purple cabbage, shrimp.
This is possibly my favorite artistic creation. Your work is beautiful. As for "not for eating", people make demo cakes using foam forms. Nothing different about that in my eyes.
Thank you :) When I mean no for eating - although everything on the plate is edible I make some creations as tributes. This one was for my late grandmother so my son didn't eat it xx
Load More Replies...This is so incredibly sweet! I will never not cry when watching Coco.
While I am impressed with her talent, I cannot help but feel she is spoiling her kids attitude toward food and sabotaging their adult relationships. It's one thing to make a smiling banana face on French toast served hot and quite another to elevate it to this level of art. She makes more than just a few that are not for eating, even if she says otherwise. Yes, food interesting to the eye, but to the tongue, perhaps not. This dish for example, cold mashed potatoes with vegetable dye, dry vermicelli with no sauce, raw cabbage with no seasoning, shrimp, if you like shrimp, hardly a taste of peppers. Thanks but no thanks. Give me steamy hot Persian chelo kabob scented with saffron and sumac with roasted tomatoes -- now that is art good enough to eat.
Load More Replies...Hey, in all fairness, I could eat mashed potato every day of my life.

Diane a, where is your negative comment on this one?? Can't say anything can you cause this is clearly edible. Didn't know you could be speechless... sorry to everyone else, her comments have been so rude and infuriating.
I appreciate you soo much! Don't worry though - this is what she want- she is a Keyboard warrior :) xx

Diane, go be a sad and salty troll somewhere if you don't want to get reported to the BoredPanda moderation team. Man, you must have a lot of anger inside your heart if you are honestly this annoyed by a simple post about food art. Did your parents ever teach you that you don't have to engage if something you don't like? It's not that hard--even young children know that.

First off that's rude, secondly depending on their culture, many nationalities eat squid regularly and that includes children because it's their normal such as most Asian countries.

Mash potato, fungi, cashews (not made for eating).
Most fungi are edible. Well, technically all fungi are edible, but some only once (Terry Pratchett quote)
Load More Replies...tried to make me eat some fungi I said NO NO NO.....
my comment got deleted again and i thought it was funny, sorry nobody else did. :(
You have been saying a lot of rude things and accusing the creator of things, like being on her phone and not paying attention to her kids and etc, without knowing her or her children. Please just stop... btw, she does say in the beginning her son is a part of this process so they clearly do this together as a hobby and not just for Instagram as you've also accused her of in another comment. It's so frustrating when people like you automatically assume and accuse people of things you can't possibly know. Think about how that makes her feel...

Nice! And for those who think weird for toddler to eat shellfish, the recommended age to try shellfish is after 12 months. So its completely fine to let 19 months old and 6 years old to try to eat shellfish.
Thank you :) It's definitely not weird - our children try all kinds of foods from all different cultures and they just love it xx

"To make my son eat healthy"..... anyone else wondering how old his kid has to be to be persuaded to eat healthy and appreciate Snoop Dog or Amy Winehouse? Starting to wonder if she is retired and her son is a 43 year old man.
I like how you guys point out Amy Winehouse and Snoop Dog as being totally unacceptable..but then make it seem like Freddie Krueger is normal for a child... Please people..read the article before scanning the pictures...
Load More Replies...The food plate art stuff is well done - god help her kids - either not allowed to touch it - or eat it stone cold after she has played about with it for an hour to get "the instagram pic". Just actually feed your children real food when they are hungry.
Hi Diane, I find it really strange that you have all this time to sit here and basically TROLL all over my creations. You have managed to make a negative comment on most of my creation. I don't understand where all this hatred is coming from but let me reply to a few of your comments: If you read the description it clearly says that this is now career for me - (lucky me right! ) so some of these creations are made as commissioned pieces - that's right I get paid to do this!! Isn't that amazing! These creations weren't made for my little girl for his 19months old they were made for my son JACOB - hence Jacob's Food Diaries. A lot of them were for him to eat but CLEARLY the ones that celebrity ones that are made were as tributes and NOT for him to eat. I make only 3 creations a week so the other remaining meals are "normal" meals so please don't stress my kids aren't and wont grow up to be brats
Load More Replies...While these are super cute & creative, I don't think kids should need their parents to make these to eat the food their parents provide. To me, that's a brat.
That would be a brat if you ONLY ate food designed as a character you like. However, every once and a while it’s a nice treat if your mother came and gave you a lunch that looked like Elsa or something. ☺️
Load More Replies...This is cute, but silly and wasteful. And she is only going to perpetuate her kids fussy and entitled eating habits...
This is only done 3 meals in a week, my children eat normal food and they are definitely NOT fussy eaters - infact they are massive foodies!
Load More Replies...I'm probably going to get downvoted for this but I'm gonna say it anyway. These look great but whatever happened to parents just making their kids eat their damn veggies?
I enjoyed looking at those plates and a lot of talent has gone into this. But it came across as a bit weird to start with "I made those for my boy" and then proceed to produce artful plates full of food that is not meant to be eaten (at her own description). It might have been made a bit clearer that making the food look cute for her child was what got her into designing those, but that this is not what it is about anymore. The more elaborate ones looked like 2 1/2D sculptures, just with food as a material. They look nice, but I enjoyed the plain ones a lot more, because they seemed like you can actually eat them. :)
I’m sure some of them were meant to be eaten, the ones that weren’t were probably just her having fun or for a commission
Load More Replies...omg.. how come that some people have all the creativity and me is not able to paint a finger that actually looks like a worm 🤐
