You don't need to be under the influence for this. Enough to have a long night shift. That's how my partner learned how to burn calories... Food into the oven, sat down to check his emails, fell asleep right away, woke up about 12 hours later. The food was really well done.

We also found out last year that the really pretty wall cabinets in our kitchen were VERY shoddily installed. I walked into the kitchen to see what that noise was, only to find the group of 3 large cabinets hanging by one s***w at one corner. (Which stopped it from actually falling forward, so it didn't empty all the plates and glasses we have onto the floor yet.) I screamed for my partner, who grabbed one end, and held it while I got everything out very quickly, before we removed the remaining s***w, only to realise that the entire unit was held by 4 tiny screws that would be appropriate for maybe a bathroom mirror. (A light one.) What a fun evening that was... not.

Yes, totally quirky, almost adorable to be disrespecting a corpse, and your own wife all in one fell swoop! By your logic, if someone is yelling obscenities to a woman from a car, it won't hurt her, she's not in the car, she won't get hurt! Well... There's a Hungarian anise flavoured candy that is coloured with carbon, so it's jet black. Up to this day (since the early 1900s) it's called N-e-g-r-o. Zero connection to black people, especially since at the time our black population was probably all of 2-3 people in the entire country, if that. It's just a Latin name for black, since the candy itself is black, and it was advertised as the "chimney sweep of the throat", and chimney sweeps at the time wore all black clothes, and of course their faces were black from soot as well. But when I pulled this candy out in the UK... Let's just say it always required a history/linguistics lesson before handing one over! We also have the word "néger", which certainly is a phonetic copy of the ugly English word, but had no negative connotation for us. It just described people who had a dark skin. Nowadays the word is less used because it is clear where it came from, but it never actually was a slur here.

As far as I know this is false when phrased like that. When slavery in the US was at its peak, Brazil had about half as many enslaved people than them. Brazil on the other hand had a much longer, centuries long "tradition" of slavery, so altogether they had more slaves, simply because they kept up the practice much longer.

There is no evidence that it had happened. It's a rumour. Maybe it happened, maybe it didn't, the only fact we know is that it took a rather long time for the body to arrive to the mortuary. Personally I'd say it's more likely that it happened because everyone was very busy destroying/looking for evidence pointing to anything awkward, but anything is possible. People can be very sick, so your guess is as good as mine. Still remains a guess though.

Here's something I bet you didn't know then, simply because hardly anyone knows much about Hungary or our language. Since we were so far from the US geographically and mentally, culturally at the time, we adopted words that meant the same in English in different ways. (Sure it happened in other countries as well of course.) So in Hungarian "indián" is Indian as in Native American, and "indiai" is Indian as in from India. They reached our language at different times, from different "routes". So in Hungarian you can't really call it racist if these people are called "indián", because the word has no negative connotations to it, just a word describing a group of people, like saying Belgians. Of course nowadays it's less used out of respect, but it really was never a derogatory term.

The statement would be closer to truth by saying that even today, if you hear someone is German, there's often an instinctive shudder. That stain on the nation overshadows everything Germans ever have done before or after. They are still somewhat looked at as you-know-whats-with-an-N. But if you say you're Japanese, people think of all kinds of things, but not that often war crimes as a first thought.

Have to agree with you on that. As repulsive as that whole story is, it was not done to punish her. It was a genuine, very misguided attempt to help her. Her father was by any measure a horrible person, and sure, he was embarrassed by her behaviours, but she had actual mental issues that nobody at the time had a very good idea how to fix or even properly explain. He went with what he thought was a good treatment, and ended up causing tragic results.

When someone else, who is usually a trusted source, is not only confident but insistent, it's human nature/psychology to question if what they are saying is true. We would never have progressed as a species if we all had to discover everything for ourselves. That's why learning critical thinking is so important. But it does start with questioning. So it's completely normal, and not gendered, to question your assumptions in the face of a trusted source being adamently against them. It would only be a problem if she just took what he said at face value. She did all the right things, it was just a bad situation.
