Unfortunately for us, Australia isn’t entirely populated just by friendly locals, cool kangaroos, and cute koalas. The Land Down Under sometimes seems like the most dangerous country on the entire planet and should be renamed the Land of Nope.
In large part, the country owes its reputation to its ruthless natural hazards, the dangerous animals that live there, and all the scary things that want to make us yell ‘nope!’ and run away faster than the speed of sound in the opposite direction.
To show you just how scary animals in Australia can be, Bored Panda created a list of all the dangers lurking in the Land Down Under. Keep scrolling, share with your friends, and upvote your favorite dangerous animals in Australia!

Roofhanger. Suspended Grey Headed Flying Fox, A Megabat Native To Australia
Batwing is fine and dandy. He dried off and flew away as soon as it was night time. He was not sick, just wet.
I've always loved bats. This one just kinda surprised me since it looks like a little person with wolf eyes
Load More Replies...Hello sir, do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Savior, Count Dracula?
I was going to say that this is one of the ways Count Dracula sleeps. It helps promote his long life by straightening back bones and sending blood to the brain.
Load More Replies...This is very true bats are misunderstood and are killed without reason. If you are afraid you will get rabies just don't go near the bat if it is on the ground it is either dead has rabies or has been hurt.
Load More Replies...Whilst these bats are mostly harmless being scratched or bitten (which is uncommon) can be dangerous as they can carry the lyssavirus which is closely related to rabies. These bats are HUGE, I was fortunate enough to see a swarm of over 1000 fly past whilst at a festival. It was incredible.
As with most humans being injured, it is usually in a large part due to humans trying to hurt an animal and their own stupidity thinking they know best. They don't! Oh and FYI even the Lyssavirus is very rare and certainly Not an óften found virus.
Load More Replies...On an average day, he usually unfurls his cape in a dramatic fashion and breaks into a fantastic musical number.
Mostly harmless, they can carry the lyssavirus which is similar to rabies. So if you are ever scratched or bitten by one seek medical attention.
Load More Replies...When I lived in Cairns Australia, these beautiful creatures would fly in the evening in the thousands across the town to the caves. They are harmless, adorable giant a*s bats. The only thing you need to make sure of is not to park your car under a tree they are hanging from. Their poop will burn through your paint:)
Yes, I lived in Cairns years ago and they come in numbers to those big trees.
Load More Replies...Check out the folks who rescue these guys, Megabatty and Batzilla, and see how sweet these bats are. Just darling. They suffer a lot in human environments.
I saw a wild flying fox colony when I went to Oz & they actually have the cutest wee faces 😊
Seriously, calling out a bat that is so crucial to the ecosystem as creepy? This darling, charismatic critter eats thousands of mosquitos in a week.
I would seriously scream if I saw one of these. Never liked bats, they give me the creeps! But apparently it's more than welcome at everyone else at Bored Panda :-)
Batwing is a flying fox, which means fruit eating, which means no worries, mate.
They are as harmless as a bunny rabbit, unless of course you are directly in the path of their poop.
The only reason why I would even want to visit Australia, since I am afraid of almost EVERYTHING there.. I love these bats!
Excuse me, but would you like to talk about our lord and savior, Batman?
Grey Headed Flying foxes are vulnerable and protected - without them we would have no birds no possums no koalas - they are a keystone species and NOT SCARY - contrary to the caption - any bar that hasn’t returned to the colony will need to be assessed please contact your local bat rescue or wildlife group ❤️🦇🇦🇺
Sky Puppers aren't scary at all. Wish we had them that big. I'd be a toral stalker. Lol
I LOVE them, I would be so happy if I would see one ;;3;; big flying cats ^^
They are ADORABLE, but could you imagine stumbling bleary eyed out your door in the morning before you've had coffee and seeing this small child dangling upside from your roof? I would expire on the spot.
i have seen a bat very small close up. it was grinning this evil looking grin ..it was stuck in a little tree and i got it out...and let it go...but this one...oh man is scary becuz its huge...i would wait till its gone before i got out...
Bats in Australia usually eat insects or fruit, they are also not humungously large either, as per usual media makes them look bigger/ more dangerous than they actually are.
Seriously, these cuties? Bats in Australia eat either insects or fruit. And they aren't that big either so sensationalising it won't make it grow....lol
He eats FRUIT Australian bats eat Fruit or Insects. They are Super Cute and needed for Pollination to drop seeds etc in their poop to have more beautiful plants all around. They are Super Shy and would prefer Not to be near Humans. 🌹💐🌺👍🥰🦇🦇🦇🇭🇲🙏🏻
Bats are our friends. They consume millions of pesky insects. Wish we had our bats back in Nova Scotia.
These pictures are as close as I ever want to get to Australia. And to think I once thought about hitchhiking across the Outback!
This bat isn't even dangerous. Actually most bats won't hurt you. Even vampire bats just drink the blood of livestock also most of the time the animals dont even notice that the bat is there.
Flying foxes are not a 'nope,' they're one of the cutest things on the planet. It's like a sky doggo!
How is this a "nope"? They are adorable! Like cute cats with wings, I love them!!
I would adore getting to see something like this in person! Giant sky puppies are the best!
Awww, nothing wrong with this one... It's really cute!! Does look like a Dark Fox with Vampire wings... And I'm pretty sure that they only eat fruits
I love Bats, especially fruit bats and the flying fox bats. Just look how cute he is!
I really like him Totally harmless to humans ..... he could hang around as long as he wanted !
Beautiful creatures. I would love it if I found one hanging outside my house.
They are so darn cute. I donate to a sanctuary that takes care of them.
Saw them hanging from the tree limbs in Cairn when I visited last year. That were quite noisy at night and one certainly didn’t have to worry about bugs.
We used to have a bat who lived above our doorway. He kept all the bugs away and never bothered us. So cute!
Cute with the eyes closed. If he's staring like that, I got the chilling like do u want my blood Mr vamp 😱😱
These guys are absolutely adorable. We get them in our fruit trees at night, towards the end of Summer, eating the left overs...They sound really cool as they "swoop" past your head, but they are harmless and super cute.
Cute little thing. Ok huge thing. But I absolutely LOVE bats of all sizes. They are so cute!
I saw large fruit bats like this hanging from trees in Senegal and teeny-tiny bats (the size of a smallish woman’s hand) fly out of a wat in Phnom Penh in the millions. They’re really cool; however, after a while I stopped going into caves because the bat-pee smell was just too overwhelming.
Load More Replies...The earsies are cute...the earsies are cute....just look at he earsies....
as a suburban Australian e have these guys flying over our back yards nightly..all you can hear is their wings as they fly over..OH..and the most annoying thing is when they hang in a tree over your car and go to the toilet on it..l tell yah, if you don't clean that off soon it eats your paint off the car..
These guys are incredibly important & not a threat to people whatsoever.
Also known as a fruit bat. These hang in the trees and are completely harmless and beautiful to watch flying and swooping across the evening sky
These guys are super cute and, as far as I know, not dangerous to humans. In fact I've read they make wonderful pets.
Bats scare me when there flying around the place but I do find them cute, this one is cute but if it came near me I think I would lose my life
Batmanning at its best! "You are violating the law!" Hahahahaaaa
What's scary about them? They are so gentle and sweet, and they love to eat fruits!
Totally with everyone else. This isn't a "nope", it's an, "awww! Cute! I wants me one!"
Really reminds me of Barnabas Collins. That bod's a little too human.
I'd be inviting this guy into the house to tackle the mosquitoes I can't quite eradicate. He's cute!
They’re not that big, but they do make a lot of noise in the night.

Aw, why nope? These guys are fantastic! I've done a few reports on bats of all types but flying foxes are my favorite, and in all honesty I've always loved the Sky puppies. So, i know this sounds like I'm being cocky and rude but I'd actually like to know why you dislike them, as I have trouble seeing other people's side of things on this particular subject.

A Gang Of Robber Crabs Invade A Family Picnic In Australia
From enormously big spiders to deadly venomous snakes, ferocious crocodiles, octopuses, and disgustingly overgrown earthworms, the Great Southern Land seems to have it all when it comes to nightmare fuel and creepy crawlies. We can probably all agree that some Australian animals look absolutely terrifying, but how dangerous are they really?
Believe It Or Not, This Is One Of The Least Dangerous Spiders We Have In Australia
This is the huntsman spider, a common friend to be found in houses and garden across Australia. He's harmless really, don't let his large size intimidate you. Huntsmen won't bite humans unless provoked, are not venomous and are actually handy to have around the place, he'll use his speed and agility to keep your cockroach population under control.
Think of the huntsman as a handy pet. Respect his space, let him do his job and he'll look after you well.

If poisonous snakes don’t cause you to scream and panic, then what about spiders? More than 2,400 different species of arachnids call the Land Down Under their home.
Among them is the deadly Sydney funnel-web spider, which can end a person’s life within 15 minutes of biting them. This spider always gets into the top lists of the world’s deadliest arachnids and doesn’t mess around: if you see one, nope, right out of there!

The cane toads are deadlier than the python believe it or not. Cane toads have very few predators due to the toxins. These cane toads were hitching a ride to escape a storm although on expert claims that the male cane toads were in fact trying to mate with the python.

This Giant, Hot Pink Slug Is Only Found In A Single, Isolated Forest On An Extinct Volcano In Australia
That’s not to say that every single spider you encounter abroad is going to be a threat to you. Fortunately, less than 50 Australian spider species pose a threat to people. Let’s also not forget that most spiders are our friends and help keep the native insect population down.
Obviously, these tidbits of good news won’t really make Australia’s spiders any less scary to look at. Anyone with arachnophobia should probably still avoid Australia until they get over their fear of spiders and travel elsewhere for their summer vacation.

What is Australia’s Deadliest Animal?
It might come as a surprise, but Australia’s deadliest animal isn't one of its many venomous creatures. Forget the spine-chilling spiders or the fearsome crocodile. According to the NCIS (National Coronial Information System), the title of Australia’s deadliest animal goes to a far more familiar creature: the horse.
In the wild and rugged landscapes of Australia, where one might expect the most danger to come from its notorious wildlife, it’s actually horses, ponies, and donkeys that pose the greatest risk. From 2001 to 2017, horses have been responsible for the highest number of animal-related deaths in Australia, with 172 fatalities, mostly due to falls.
Cows and other bovine animals also rank high on the list, with 82 reported deaths for the same period of time, mainly through accidents rather than direct attacks. Even our loyal companions, dogs, hold a surprising rank as the third leading cause of animal-related fatalities, responsible for 53 deaths. Most victims were children and elderly people.
Meanwhile, creatures like snakes and spiders, while dangerous sometimes, have caused far fewer fatalities than one might expect.

This was found in Broome, Western Australia and looks like an anemone. More specifically, Dofleinia armata, the armed anemone. Also called the striped anemone. It is considered extremely dangerous as it can inflict painful stings that take months to heal.
SkyNews reported 3 shark-caused fatalities in South Australia in 2023. This number is notable as there were only 8 deaths in the previous 22 years. Meanwhile, crocodiles kill an average of 1 or 2 people every year in Australia, with a peak in 2014 when 5 crocodile-related deaths have been reported (via The Guardian). However, it’s not just animals that can harm you in Australia.
The country is also known for its giant 10-kilogram pine cones that can fall on top of you, as well as tennis ball-sized hailstones that can cause severe damage if your head is unprotected. When in Australia, it’s best to either keep looking in all directions at once in search of threats or shut your eyes and wish you were somewhere safe and sound.

So, How Many People Are Killed by Animals in Australia?
Based on the available data, from 2001 to 2017, there were 541 animal-related deaths in Australia, with an average of 32 deaths per year. As we’ve seen, among the most deadly animals in Australia, we don’t find any exotic dangers but very familiar faces—horses, cows, and dogs—with land mammals accounting for 71% of all deaths by animals in the country.
These tragedies mainly happened on public roads (30.3%), homes (20.7%), and farms (19.2%).

Thorny Devil Lizard is a tiny, colorful reptile covered in spiky scales, which give it a dragon-like appearance and help collect and direct water to its mouth—something this species adapted for to survive in arid environments.
Found primarily in the central deserts of Australia, the Thorny Devil Lizard has a peculiar way of walking. He moves in a slow, rocking motion that helps it escape predators and feeds almost exclusively on ants.

I not 100% sure but I think this is a Redback spider. They are aggressive and give a painful bite. Whilst fatalities aren’t common from a redback they can cause other problems. Load More Replies...The most dangerous animal that causes the most deaths is not listed. The horse. The horse kills more humans annually than all these animals put together. So please don’t let this list scare you and stop you from visiting Australia because we have so much amazing things to offer and it would be a shame to miss them from a misguided fear.
Fully agree! Guys Australia is so amazing and definitely worth visiting!
Load More Replies...Yes... I love my country....But it all depends on where you live as to what kinds of danger you may be in and what you may see. For instance, I come from North Queensland in the tropics where jellyfish stings and crocodiles are just something you have to be aware of in your life. I have lived in the bush of rural New South Wales and dealt with a lot of different animals including venomous Red Bellied Blacks (we regularly saw about 5-6 snakes) whom we really appreciated as they keep down populations of pest animals and are quite docile. Living in cities you may never see more than a couple of Daddy Long Legs and some geckos.... Great place...
I think I'm going to stay home and NEVER EVER set true sights on Australia except in pictures of pretty things that are not included in all of the NOPE that Australia has.
You know, I live in a town located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest (Manaus), and even I wouldn't dare to step a foot in Australia.
Hell for people with fear of snakes or spiders. I don't have those fears but I would probably be screaming most of the time while encountering all those creatures. Not used to it.
Snakes are (for the most part) VENOMOUS not poisonous. If you bite it and you die, that’s poisonous. If it bites you and you die, that’s venomous.
In rural Australia ,where I live ,the rule of thumb, don't leave shoes, bags etc outside, check under toilet seats (and inside toilet roles :/) be aware of your surroundings(we have many venomous snakes on our property ,but you rarely see them.I think it's odd that the article didn't mention Redback Spiders , Wolf Spiders,Whitetail Spiders(all venomous),Fire Ants,Jumping Jack ants,Bull ants (very nasty stings form all of them) or Brown Snakes or Taipans both large, fast-moving, highly venomous snakes or even the Red Bellied Black ,venomous but quite shy and usually only bites when stepped on. Summer is the worst for ALL these. things ,except roos they are always about. We have bloody great eagles as well.Be respectful most creatures and they will leave you alone ...Except spiders ,they are big and terriying ,run away! Here is a photo of the two Wedged Tailed eagles that nest on our place, eating a full sized dead sheep! 26993857_1...06b01e.jpg
Whoever wrote this article is an idiot - why do they keep saying "poisonous" when they mean "venomous"? They're two completely different things
When another animal (birds for example) eat a poisonous snake, they die. If the snake was quick and bit the bird then the bird dies from the venom. So when the author used both poisonous and venomous in the same sentence they are referring to both. Also educated Aussies understand the difference of both words and will use the correct word in a description.

I do really think that Australia is a YES COUNTRY .. For me is the only country that can really cohabit with animals .. They learn how to live with everything that moves .and respect their environment .That is incredible , and believe me i´m scare of spiders and another bugs .. Australia is a really big example for so many country .. we have so much to learn with animals, and have a lot to learn with us too.. there´s a deep connection between everything that lives .. and we should give sense to that .
This was awesome and thanks to Foxxy and all the Aussies who shared info!

My Facebook friend Vicki lives in the Adelaide area, but the "creepiest" animal she ever found in her garden was a (for humans) non-venomous huntsman spider. I think it depends on the area you live in if you also find venoumous snakes and other dangerous animals "down under".

I feel like everyone thinks that's all there is to Australia. It's not. It's absolutely amazing. Sometimes yeah, you have to be cautious of the wildlife but still.
I will now have nightmares tonight😱 they are all cool but like bro what the heck... 😨😰😨
This was kinda offensive to me, because I doubt the person who made this has even visited Australia, and they are just saying "Don't visit Australia because there's these animals that live here"

Yeah I’m Australian and I can confirm that these are defo 100% accurate.
So I saw a crocodile eating a shark, a snake eating a crocodile, and a frog eating a snake. Australia, your food chain is messed up!
I've always wanted to go on a trip to Austrailia, not anymore. Nope nope nope. I have the worst case of Arachnaphobia, even a bigger NOPE.
I love animals, but those spiders are disturbing! Nope, nope, nope
I would love to visit Australia but the only thing that scares me about AUS are the creepy stories I have listened to on YouTube. The absolute lack of internet, long stretches of highway with no town in sight, gas stations or some locals/transplants directing you down deserted roads at night into nowhere land. The rest are fine by me, I love spiders, snakes and bats. Though I live in Texas and we have our fair share of dangerous/venomous creatures, various rattlesnake/copperhead snakes, scorpions, brown recluse spider and wild boar/hogs. The boars are extremely aggressive and destroy crops and eat 10x’s their weight in agriculture. Though, I have never tried to catch a spider or a snake in Australia and put the little guy outside like I do here in Texas.
My brother-in-law and his girlfriend have been in Aus for 7 years now and have just been given their permanent residency. I have no desire to visit them!
Ya know honestly wouldn't mind all the free snakes and the spiders etc. The thing that would break me would be the excessive amount of flys and the serial killers

No wonder they used to send criminals there. Just add definite and it's truely hell on earth.
I would love to visit Australia, but I don’t think I could deal with those spiders. Snakes I don’t have a problem with.
ah yes, Australia. also known as "remind-me-to-never-ever-in-a-miilion-years-come-here" land
Why is spiderman from New York he is obviously supposed to be Australian. Godamn just no
You know what? Maybe I should find Crash Bandicoot if I ever go to Australia.
Thats it. I’m never going down there. The creepy stuff are too creepy and I HATE SNAKES....
Don't forget, thrown correctly, a thong (flip flop for the yanks) or a cup can kill you.
We called them thongs when I was young...lo these many, many years ago.

I'm a zoologist. My ideal vacation: exploring Australia; a video game in real life.
I do miss all the wildlife at home. Just sitting in the garden and enjoying all the animals.

living in the country I see and have many huntsman that are absolutely huge in my house and garden. I had such a good laugh looking at all of these

Ok, so, I looked at maybe 3 pics and freaked out!!!! I'm terrified of spiders and there is no amount of Chris Hemsworths that would make me move to Australia.
If I ever visit Australia (which I would very much love to), I'll live in a bubble the whole time.
Long ago some sadistic British bureaucrat said; We can really screw petty criminals, we'll ship them to Australia. Bwahaha.
I've always wanted to go to Australia for a visit, it was on my bucket list. Needless to say that has been scratched off the list for good!! I refuse to go on vacation to someplace that has spiders and bugs that are the size of a small child. Not to mention all the freaking snakes. NOPE NOPE NOPE, I will enjoy Australia by reading National Geographic magazines.
I have changed my mind about planning a visit. I will admire from afar..
No mention of the number of tourists that have disappeared or been found murdered in the past 12 months alone.
Your more likely to get shot on any given day than murdered in Aus. A lot of the tourists that have disappeared are backpackers who hitchhike.

A lot of countries culls wildlife for farming, just have a look at the US for example, not just for farming but also for housing, mining, and other infrastructure. The US exports more live stock/animals than Australia does, in 2013 Aus exported 3,160,610, whilst the US exported 94,775,607. Also look at the countries where rainforests are being destroyed at alarming rates killing off orangutans and other vulnerable animals etc due to the palm oil industry. Add on the countries that use animals for entertainment in cruel ways like being chained up, beaten, starved etc. Look at what the US does to its own citizens too with mass shootings almost daily. Start by reading the book "In A Sun Burnt Country" funny and informative. I read after about 4 trips there.
Load More Replies...In Terry Pratchett's Lost Continent there was discussion about the dangerous animals of XXXX (discworld version of Australia). After magical library dumped enough books for small library on the floor, they asked for list of harmless animals. Result: Small piece of parchment with words: "Some of the sheep".
How do things get inside so easily? Seriously wondering! Some of those spiders are so big they'd have to walk through the front door?! (It's even worse to think that they got in when they were tiny and grew up in your house >-
Going to look at a map right now to see if my country far enough away from Australia.
The archetypical "Oh I just understand stereotypes" ignorant douchebag. Stay in your country, no one wants your ignorant brain anywhere else as a tourist.
Load More Replies...I don't care if you all say the spiders are smaller than the pictures, I would be screaming my food head off every damn minute!!! There is no way in hell I would ever visit Australia now. /shudders and scratches every part of her body because she thinks there are spiders on her!
I'm glad I went to Australia before I realized how many animals could kill me.
Every Christmas we have a snake show up. Every. Single. Christmas. For the last 5 years. Last year the snake was on the pool slide then another on the road to Grandparents, year before that mum thought we hung a garland on the door. It was NOT a garland. Mum HATES snakes. All my friends know to refer to it as the “s” word.
It's your family's Snake on the Shelf! I shuddered at the thought of a snaky door garland. 🐍
Load More Replies...Yeah... Australia does have a lot of dangerous creatures, but at least we aren't going to be killed by an assault rifle. Leave military equipment to be used for the purpose it was created.
I live in the pacific nw...it is an area with only garter snakes. I am afraid of snakes and see them often. It is my super power to hear or see them (yes hear them, on more than one occasion I have said "i hear something in the grass' and moments later i have spotted the tiny snake.)
I buy flame throwers in bulk for normal house spiders can't even imagine what I'd need for spiders in Australia

Ok, well this saved me from buying a very expensive flight ! (I'll be going to go horse trekkkng in Ireland instead- probably more dangerous but it's a lifelong dream and I'm a decent rider)
Definitely more dangerous lol. More people are killed by horses in Australia than all the animals in this list put together. 😝

I had a teacher from Australia who told us stories about her childhood and how her parents always told her to sweep the giant spiders out with a broom. She awoke one night with a massive spider on her wall and squished it. She then got yelled at by her parents because they had to repaint her wall.
This is a lot of nope. There's plenty of nopes where I live, but I haven't run across snakes or spiders that are as big as the ones in the pictures.
Don’t like the bugs here in WI, or snakes and other creatures . Insects. . Yes I am afraid of everything .
Sorry. Not sorry. The only way I’d ever visit Australia after this list is if they took a blow torch to the entire continent and started over. F*****g hell!
