Tens of thousands of people had been ordered to evacuate their homes and many more had been told to prepare to flee as eastern Australia is experiencing the worst flood in decades.

Military helicopters airlifted stranded people from rooftops in submerged neighborhoods and a tenth victim was found on Tuesday following days of torrential rain.

The devastating weather has submerged several towns and bridges in Queensland and New South Wales, and is moving to the south with heavy rains and possible flash flooding forecasted for Sydney.

Yeah because idiots kept driving into water when told repeatedly NOT too. 80% of our rescues have been because of this the last few days. You are putting our lives at risk because of your inability to follow simple directions when we all have to pull you out of your car like my crew had to yesterday. Just STOP it.

"This rather significant weather system ... we will see it come into the central coast of Sydney and we are already experiencing elements of that right now," Prime Minister Scott Morrison explained during a media briefing.

Sydney is Australia's largest city and home to more than 5 million people. It could receive up to 150 mm (6 inches) of rains within a six-hour period, the Bureau of Meteorology said. (Sydney's mean rainfall for March is 138 mm.)

New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet described the extreme weather as a "one-in-a-one thousand-year event" and said emergency crews carried out more than 1,000 rescues in the state after receiving 6,000 calls for help so far.

This is due to land usage changes, Lismore should never have ben built as a town It is simply a flood plain. it was flooding in the 1700 and 1800s, and 1900s, 2000s and is continuing to flood in 2001s and again in the 2020s Speaking as qualified wife of the (now retired) NSW public service Flood Plain Manager, The trouble is that the ignorant political simply overrules the qualified people. And most of these silly people will 'rebuild, just in time for the next floods! And the Council will allow this :-( Talk about King Bloody Canute!!

The line "we have done floods forever" makes me lose all sympathy. Australia is big, you do not have to live in a flood zone. If for some reason you must live there, live in a house boat that happens to be currently on the ground. Similarly, do not build a house on an old lava flow by an active volcano. Do not build a house on a sea cliff. Etc. etc.

Gotta say, climate change is nothing new. The climate has gone through many changes. All scientists agree with this whether they're proponents of the theory of evolution or of creationism (I love the reaction to new information that some people don't like. Don't ask or wonder about it. Just hate it. That's a great way to live in ignorance.)

Hundreds of people are still stuck at their homes in the northern New South Wales city of Lismore, facing its worst floods in history, amid reports of some even spending the night on rooftops.

Mayor Steve Krieg said that nine people were still missing with 400 rescues yet to be carried out.

According to authorities, around 50 people were rescued after they became stuck on a bridge overnight when fast-rising waters submerged both ends.

For a Prime Minister with a background in marketing and who professes to have been chosen by the big chief in the sky himself, it is ironic that under his term we have had the worst fires, floods and plague of all time. And he still hasn't worked out what the big boss is telling him and this is a man who believes in signs. This is a man who waved a piece of coal around in parliment laughing at people worried about climate change ever so pleased with himself. And worse still people here keep voting his corrupt, smug and dangerous government in.

You can carry on about this statement all you like. Fact is the people of Queensland consistently vote for governments which are right to far right, and cut back government services is the result. It's hard to have any sympathy for them when they carry on like this. They voted for it. The current state government is Labor, but very conservative Labor, and constrained by past right wing governments funding cuts. The federal government is one which many Queenslanders support. You get what you vote for.

I am sure that the city of Lismore has all the flood mitigation programs in place, that it possibly can. The only thing I can see that the government could control, is banning all dwellings in flood plains. That I want to see.

You're right but it's already too late. What we do now will help 'start reversing what we've done in about a century. Until then it's going to get very much worse. Sorry. People in low areas around coasts should be moving. If you live on a floodplain for any waterway, move uphill now by at least 200 to 300 feet. Too many people hemming and hawing, dragging their feet. This isn't going away and it's not going to be magically fixed overnight.

Florida. Built not just on flood plains, but in some areas below sea level - oh it was filled in, but all it takes is a big storm to wash away your multi-million dollar house. Buildings above 5 stories are crumbling at an alarming rate because they are built on SAND. Ever heard of hurricanes? Lets move 100s of thousands of new people in a month. The woodlands and forests are disappearing. Sorry, didn't mean to go so off topic. I pray that there are no more deaths in Australia.

Too late, my friends. There is just 1 solution and nobody will make that choice. Five years ago on the Klimate top in Paris India left. Last year in Glasgow China and India were absent. Why? All the other nations are talking about the footprint of 1990. China and India together have 1/3 of the world population and they can´t go back to the CO2 levels of 1990. The only way for the world to go back to the CO2 levels of 1990 in 2030 without losing the current welfare is: bringing the worldpopulation back to 2 billion within 5 years. (erasing 2/3).

Listen, i'm no expert, but i read a book (totally gobsmacking galaxy), and it said you're more likely to be affected by a pigeon flying overhead than some burning balls of farts 14,103,815,000,000,000,000,000 smoots away. Anyway, i have called the Galactic council to clarify, and they've called you "an incomprehensibly absolute t*sser", and i'm inclined to agree. Also, if your "theory" held any sort of water, there'd be dinosaurs everywhere, as 230 MyA places us firmly in the Late Triassic.

Perrottet said 40,000 people were ordered to evacuate, while 300,000 others were placed under evacuation warnings.

"We'll be doing everything ... we can to get everybody to safety and get these communities right across our state back on their feet as quickly as possible," Perrottet told reporters in Sydney.

Government meteorologist Jonathan Howe described the amount of recent rainfall in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland as "astronomical."

Im pretty sure no-one builds 23m scales in rivers. That scale must be in feet which is still absolutely insane. (7+ meters which correleates eg with the flooded McDonald's sign)

With climate change you need to take a 0 off those historic flood level frequencies. The old 100 year is now the 10 year. This flood is at the 1,000 year level which is the new 100 year level Two 10 year floods 5 years apart shouldn't surprise anyone

This is terrible. There's no denying that. But who defines what a "once in a hundred year flood" actually is? We've only been reliably studying the weather for a little over a century. How can you possibly be absolutely certain?

At least in Italy, we know about flood levels of the river Tiber with good precision starting from the 13th century. Stone markers (called "manine") were affixed to bridges and buildings at the high-water mark. The oldest is from the flood of November 6, 1277. Other rivers were simarly marked, especially when the water stopped close to a church (in that case it was a miracle to be preserved in the chronicles of the city).

I’m sorry for the long rant. The government's too busy putting its citizens in "quarantine camps" to worry about disaster relief and prevention

Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said emergency services held grave concerns for a man in his 70s who fell from his moored yacht in the state capital Brisbane into a swollen river on Saturday and for a 76-year-old man who disappeared with his vehicle in floodwater northwest of Brisbane on Sunday.

This is the same government that killed puppies so people wouldn't leave their homes to adopt them and possibly expose themselves to COVID

Australia's hottest and driest year on record was 2019 which ended with devastating wildfires across the southeast part of the country. The fires then killed 33 people directly and another 400 people were killed by the smoke.

The fires also destroyed more than 3,000 homes and 19 million hectares (47 million acres ) of farmland and forests.

But two La Nina weather patterns have since brought above-average rainfall to the same regions.

What is needed is the equivalent of a "Cajun navy", civilians who organized and rescued a lot of people. Most of the area the Cajuns patrolled was filled with commercial fisherman, so there were a lot of boats available. I think if I lived in this area, I would buy a boat and keep it on the roof.

I was unaware of the flooding until I saw the BP article, tho it has been on TV news. This is horrible, so much rain! Nearly a year's worth in 3 days.

I make more then $12,000 a month online. It’s enough to comfortably replace my old jobs income, especially considering I only work about 11 to 12 hours a week from home. I was amazed how easy it was after I tried it… GOOD LUCK.....https://www.worksclick.com

This flooding is terrible. We're there infrastructure changes after the 2011 floods to mitigate future problems?

If it was this bad on Monday, how much worse is it now? Has the rain stopped? Are the rivers cresting, rising, falling?

Dear koxena1739, Are you shallow enough to post about making money online on posts where people are dying and desperately need help? Please, tell me. If you are a bot, it the person who created your code that shallow? You are an incredibly narcissistic pig. Va te faire foutre. Sincerely, Someone that actually CARES about other people's lives

Why not a comment about the flood that folks can upvote rather than one bringing more attention to the bot? T'would be better for all.

Oh for gods sakes, they were probably talking about the services in general not in regards to themselves. I'm upset about what happened and I live two hours away. I don't blame the SES per se but the lack of funding having only two rescue boats for all of Lismore is ridiculous. The BOM was telling the government it would be bad, why wasn't there more effort made to get services in place before the flooding happened.

There's seventy nine pictures before yours showing what the rescue services HAVE been doing and like you say; your parents are on pretty high ground, the emergency services have better things to do than go up to the hills and mow your parents' lawn.

There are seventy nine photos showing what the SES haven't been doing because they only have two bloody boats, most of those photos are of regular people risking their lives to save their neighbours, OP is probably angry about the fact while his parents are safe so much of the community was left to fend for it's self.

It takes a special kind of self-righteousness to turn a human tragedy into an advertisement for an eating choice. She should be ashamed.

Nothing to do with meat, it's steel plants, aluminium smelters, plastics factories and glass works, those human volcanoes running rivers of white-hot shite, 24/7, since before 1900, don't give up meat, give up gadgets.

Ever wear leather belts or shoes? Sit on leather upholstery? If so, your hypocrisy is showing. Heart goes out to your hometown, but using the tragedy to push vegan is crass.

Seriously? Making heavy waves is only going to make the flood damage worse.
