Oh my god, those are absolutely beautiful!

Even if people say that architecture is not about words, sometimes it may seem like buildings can speak to you. One reason for this could be that construction specifics, curves and the whole style of a building tells you its history. What were the prevailing ideas or opinions at the time, the traditions, celebrations—everything's in the details.

Since its creation in 2011, this Reddit community continues to share pictures of "the beautiful impossibilities that we want to live in". According to the moderators, "Individual images of buildings are the focus of this subreddit," and it's true. The page is full of high-quality pics of architecture that will interest and inspire you.

If you ever get a chance to go to England, be sure and schedule two days in York. You will want to "walk" the wall, spend a great amount of time at York Minster, and shop in all the little shops as well as eat in various pubs.

My home city also has a Shambles, looks very similar with the old Tudor buildings. York is amazing though, haven't been there since my teens but I remember absolutely loving it. Must visit again some time.

There is an old law which is still in effect in York: if you catch a Schotsman within the city walls after sundown you are allowed to shoot him with bow and arrow.

You'll still be charged for murder/assault with weapon... It's an obsolete law, it exists, but no ones going to let you off the hook for shooting anybody, including a Scotsman, with a bow and arrow. xD

It's no secret that beauty is relative. If the structure looks weird to you, it does not actually mean that the creator has poor taste. According to architect, designer and artist Ron Arad, what we consider beautiful architecture is actually all about the "culture, context, personal history, acquired taste and, most importantly, ideas. When an architectural problem is solved by an idea, that idea is always there to be seen in the building – the idea has a visual manifestation that is beautiful."

Another architect, Sam Jacob, said that aesthetics is actually not an essential consideration in architecture: "Beauty, if it’s anything, is a psycho-cultural phenomenon. After all, it’s an idea (or a sensation) that is not inherent to a thing but a qualitative value thrust upon the object of our gaze."

The cycle of beauty goes like this: shock, then acceptance, then mainstream before it becomes the one thing to rebel against. "When people use the word beauty in design, they are seeking refuge from all of the difficulties of modern life – all of its doubts, fears and challenges," he explained.

However, being pleasing to the eye is not the only attribute of great architecture. It can also tell a lot about us as human beings. One of the main things they teach you about ancient cultures is in fact the structures they built. Through it, we can get a glimpse of what the builders and other people living there were like. Let's take ancient Egyptian civilization, we see the pyramids, the temples, the Sphinx and can immediately get a sense of how they viewed their rulers and religion.

Also, big historic events like The Industrial Revolution had an effect on many life aspects. The birth of mass production of iron and steel was a game-changer in construction. It allowed to design bigger and lighter structures and gave a path to Modernism. So one way or the other, all revolutions and historic changes influenced the way we see and think about design, and if we would take more time to observe it, we could clearly see how.

If design concepts tell so much about our culture and environment, what would they say about our present way of life? One very important topic now is sustainability. The U.S. Energy Information Administration stated that buildings generate nearly 40% of annual global CO2 emissions and that the global building floor area is expected to double by 2060.

well almost every small town in my country has a church that is hundreds of years older than the US, and they are often acommpanied by a vicarage of similar age. Finding that kind of buildings is not that uncommon.

Historians are somewhat flummoxed why Quedlinburg was relatively unharmed during WW2. It would have made more propaganda sense for the allies to firebomb this one instead of Dresden. It was considered the first capitol of Germany in 919 ago so the Nazis adopted it as their cultural/philosophic/propaganda center of the Third Reich. Heinrich Himmler considered himself the reincarnation of that first king Henry 1. They even converted the church to a Nazi shrine and used it to create a Nazi based religion. The crematory was used to burn the bodies from concentration camps. Re-editing to add a note. It is now a world heritage site and deserving of a visit. Don't avoid it because idiots were in control for 15 years.

Yes, Rose, eventually. In the meantime, if you are in the US there is an excellent reproduction of the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee. Inside is an art museum and the temple of Athena. She is the largest indoor statue in the western hemisphere. In her hand stands Nike, who is the size of a normal human. Entrance to the temple is free.

in other European cities you can't build something on top of historical architectural pieces... and then we have Greece. I am sure they do what they can to preserve all major structures but how they still manage to find so much space in between? I mean, it is packed with history ALL OVER THE PLACE.

Nowadays, architects are urged to take into account sustainability, carbon footprint, price, and innovations. When it comes to choosing building materials, timber seems to be a trend that's coming back. It has been used for thousands of years and there still are some buildings that can be dated back to 6000 B.C. "Timber is an inexpensive, light, and easy material to work with during construction," Architecture Quote explained. "The future of architecture inches closer and closer to more eco-friendly, sustainable solutions each year. Timber actually stores carbon and helps our planet."

Plywood and newspaper wood are also being used more frequently due to the new look that they give. There's the growing idea of repurposing materials for a new use, like newspapers. They are especially popular in small living spaces since they give a sense of warmth to the interior.

It is from a quarter of Bremen named "Schnoorviertel". In the old times it had been mostly inhabitated by river fishermen and craftsmen as ropemakers ("Schnoor" -> "Schnur", which is a small rope). Today it houses a lot of small craft and art shops, more than a few galeries and some really nice cafes.

According to the platform, glass is also considered to become an important material in future housing. There's a new glass technology that can harness heat from the sun and add to the insulation of the building. "This is particularly exciting for energy efficiency and sustainability in the future," they said. "Future buildings feature more and more glass as we have learned that it can help with stress, anxiety, productivity, and depression."

Another thing that is considered is earth materials. Even though making walls out of mushrooms might sound crazy, it is possible. And it's actually better for us to breathe in. "Materials like mud and adobe have been used since the beginning of civilization. The architecture of the future has taken inspiration from the past." Using the resources that our planet provides us is not only greener but also economically attractive.

The profound ugliness can't be comprehended by a picture like this. The bench completely surrounds a vast, empty brick yard, creating something that looks like a Nihilistic, post-apocalyptic horror where older churches would have green space. The height of the bench blots out all awareness of anything else below the skies but its bleak misery. The black stains that seem to leap off the bench and onto the Sunday best of any passersby can hardly be considered an accident, or result of disrepair, when one considers the certainty with which one could predict the fate of hard, coarse, scratchy concrete.

Besides, there are new types of buildings that are emerging due to our fast-paced lives. For example, tiny or modular homes. They provide a less environmental impact while saving you time and money. With small homes, you don't have to stay at exactly one location, you can roll your house anywhere you wish. With modular architecture, houses are built off-site and being delivered already finished to the site.

These are common around the UK too. Wealthy estates would have these houses posted at the entry to their land hence the name gate house. You would not be able to enter unless the gate master allowed entry. Many have now been turned into beautiful cottages/houses.

You can notice a small platform most of the way up on the left side. There is a small crew assigned to continuously maintain the temple's vibrant colors. Chennai is a manufacturing capitol of India and the combination of heavy rains and a British ran history of coal power wasn't always kind to the colors.

Lastly, let's not forget green buildings. According to the World Green Building Council, “A ‘green’ building is a building that, in its design, construction or operation, reduces or eliminates negative impacts, and can create positive impacts, on our climate and natural environment.” So it seems that the hope for the future of architecture is using low-waste and reusable materials, living tighter, greener and more mobile.

Even though the facts of environmental impact and population rise sound alarming, such architectural trends are giving us hope to be excited about the future of construction. Admire these photos on your screen and try to think about how they reflect our lives. And if that seems like not enough, we have some more stunning architecture right here and here.

Pennsylvania station was even more beautiful, but it was demolished to make way for Madison Square Garden...it invigorated the movement to save historic buildings in NYC including Grand Central.

There's a fascinating book about the design and construction (and some of the politics surrounding it all, of course), called Brunelleschi's Dome.

This photo doesn't do it justice though. I've been to Florence and a few of the other beautiful cities of Tuscany (Siena, Pisa, Lucca...) and Florence was by far the most breathtaking city of them all. Especially because of the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Ponte Vecchio bridge. The whole city is a giant piece of art.

I've done research on this cathedral. At the time when this was built, this cathedral was the largest building with a dome. Brunelleschi was a genius. Architects can do such wonders.

In old cathedrals, the beauty flows in great deal from the function; the fact that everything serves a purpose gives a highly organic greatness. I can't help, therefore, to wonder at the purpose of the forms I see here.

the basic concept is solid though. Shops / small businesses that the residents would need on the bottom floor , a park/playground in the center. Every apt gets a balcony with a view.... It looks pretty bad in this picture but looks much better in more up to date photos.

Wrong Tipperary. It has nothing to do with Tipperary, Ireland (where I was born), it was about a pub in London called The Tipperary Arms and was a music hall favourite from the 1890s. It gained further popularity as a marching song by First World War soldiers.

Hamelin is a jewell of old architecture both medieval and renaissance. Although only counting about 60 000 people, it has become a touristical center of the Weserbergland region. This house is quite typical for the old town. Apart from some really nice views, the city is mostly famous for the legend of the pied piper, which is not only represented in a figure carillon at the old town hall, but also regularly celebrated with a musical ("Rats") since 2000. An actor is employed to represent the piper, offering city tours and appearing at official events.

But in 2001, Fallingwater made news because it was literally at risk of falling into the water. Though the engineer working with Wright when it the house was built suggested there was not enough steel support to hold up the concrete, Wright overruled him. But Wright was wrong, and the home's beams eventually began to crack and give way. A massive renovation was needed to keep the structure intact and safe for visitors. According to Eifler, this oversight is common among Wright’s buildings. “He was very interested in getting things built, and sometimes he would under-structure roofs,” he explains. "So we have put a great deal of steel in his roofs to make them not droop.”https://www.insider.com/what-frank-lloyd-wright-got-wrong-2016-8#his-roofs-werent-properly-supported-1

I sincerely hope those mirror windows face north. Otherwise they're going to be a nightmare for all - fauna, flora and people - around it. And ofc, seamless windows are a killer of birds, as with any skyscraper like this. Summing up: unfortunately this is form over function. I don't approve.

Well, this BP 'story' isn't about really old buildings, it's about architectural styles & design. This house was probably built in the early 1900's, maybe as late as the 1930's. We have a lot of homes similar to this in Kansas City, Missouri, that were built just after WW1 up thru the 1930's. The house I lived in for over 20 years was built in 1918, in the Craftsman Bungalow style.

Both are correct. It was mainly a pile of rubble with it disappearing from the city skyline during the bombing of the city in WW2 followed by an East Germany that rejected religion. It wasn't until 1992 that they started clearing the rubble and started the effort to replace the old one. Although its based on the same blueprints, an argument could be made that its a completely new building. Its got some of the Ship of Theseus paradox to it.

It was destroyed in World war II and rebuilt 2005, which allowed to equip it with such conveniences as lifts or conference rooms, while still maintaining the look of the original building. The high form of the cupola is because of an architecture trick: A cupola this size was deemed to diffult to build in 1726, so architect George Bähr designed an open half-cupola and put another one on top. There is a gallery between both, which is sometimes used for choirs and singers at concerts - the Frauenkirche has an excellent choir and orchestra. A great effect, when the sound slowly comes flying in from above...

Most of those are balconies. A majority of those are 2 person units for nurses. There are both communal spaces and other things that don't actually have balconies but most the the building does. The hospital is ran by the Red Cross as both a regular hospital and a training hospital in Thailand. There are several older (not a pretty) dormitories for both nurses and doctors there as well.
