Times are a-changing and nowadays it is easy to take our ability to vote for granted. However, it's really not that long ago since our grandmothers and great-grandmothers had to go through some serious abuse to win that right. Just a century ago, suffrage was a highly divisive and controversial issue in Western society.
It's always scary to challenge the status quo and these postcards from the early 20th century are a perfect illustration of that. In them, you can see the frustration of men and women alike, who were afraid of change and thought that granting women the right to vote will somehow ruin the world and the progress that was made. Sadly, these mocking images still look vaguely familiar even in today's context where feminists (sometimes even referred to as feminazis) are depicted as irrational, neurotic and even abusive. Scroll down below to see the full list of illustrations and don't forget to vote for the ones you like (erm, hate?) the most.

The reason these posters, like this one, were made is because this is the way the men acted toward women and were TERRIFIED to have it come back to THEM!
I love how pretty much any comments made by men that is making fun or finding humor in some of these posters (and lets face it, some of these faces look hilarious) are getting downvoted, as if they agree with the poster or something. You know we can disagree with the message wholeheartedly and still find these antiquated drawings hilarious looking.
These were purposefully exaggerated by men to spread the fear that they were losing control of their women.
God forbid you take care of your own child. Makes my husband look like a saint.
You were either a mother or a whore. There was no other recognized position.
I don't get the whole thing about ham and mustard. Does this have to do with men cooking or something? Again, this poster make needs to go back to poster school.
HUH! According to many this is still what awaits women who go "professional". Despite the fact it takes two people working to make ends meet, don't encourage a woman to have a profession!
What is especially horrible is that the men, who were repressing women, portrayed themselves as the victims!
Note: this post originally had 60 images. It’s been shortened to the top 30 images based on user votes.
Most of these boil down to "we're afraid of being treated the same way we treat women!"
Interesting! So basically their greatest fear was to switch role with their wives.
the horror of looking after your own kids! also, would love to see how those "men" react if they see todays society.
Most of the same slander and insults are used today to try to brow-beat women into submission. To give up control of their bodies, to decry their character when they call out a rapist, trying to run for office, apparently some men have never gotten over the deep offense of having to consider women their equals and consider their bodies tnot among a mans properties.
And now you can see why there is vote suppression techniques. It's not just racism but just the elite group of white male being afraid to lose their power. They don't care if you're a woman, a person of color or someone from a different party, they're worried their power will be diluted by your freedom.
These experiences, are still within living memory. My mother came from an era where girls were LUCKY to get an education past 4 years, because they then had to be "taught" how to be a "wife".... and were often married at 16. 21 was seen as "too old", if you weren't married by then. If 26 and single, you were well and truly on the shelf & doomed to be a spinster forever. And this folks, is in the 1970's!!!! This is not "ancient history', but rather "living history"... and women today, are phenominaly lucky, & in debt to those women who changed society's expectations. (as are all us guys who were shown, by example, just how hard those women worked, and just how valuable their contributions were, and still are).
My mother was born in 1923, only a couple years after my grandmothers and their sisters were able to vote.
This is the exact reason why I hate all todays "I hate feminism because" idiots, who are, how ironic, mostly women. I have run onto so many youtube videos with women claiming they hate feminism and "don't need it" and on so many other places on net. I get why would men hate it but those women are despicable! They are undermining all those decades of women's fight for basic rights because they are confusing feminsm origin with some first world groups of angry women who demand men shave their legs and consider men "lower species". That's not feminsm, and you can't hate or don't need real feminsm. We really need it, even today.
There are still countries where women are treated like scum. But we won't talk about the elephant in the room on bp...ever!
There is this myth that women and minorities owe our rights and freedoms to white soldiers and the founding fathers. Women and minorities owe themselves for their rights and freedoms. They fought for them, those rights were not handed over. I hear the savior complex all the time about how American men fought to keep my free...but it was American women who gave me human rights.
Currently as it stands there are more women in the world than men. If all women banded together worldwide, we’d be an unstoppable force. But guess what?!? All we want is to be treated equal to men. That’s all. It’s not freaking rocket science sheesh
Real Feminism seeks equality; being a well rounded woman in the home, workplace, and community. Mistaken, misguided to think Feminism is grounded on the premise that women should gain higher ground by diminishing and weakening the morale of the opposite gender. Our Men are contributors to society and proliferation of our world; they are our beautiful sons, brothers, grandfathers, and husbands. Hold ourselves to these high standards, Women, and in this day and age we can demand the respect we deserve, alike.
God bless all the women here commenting (God being whatever spiritual philosophy you embrace!!). Keep up the good fight and love and support one another!!
Amazing to look at the rampant privilege and benefits of being a man, and how clearly they see that inequality, by viewing any kind of role reversal (or equity) as catastrophic. The men in power so clearly despised women if they were anything more than housekeepers and baby-making receptacles. We should never forget what price women paid to get the vote.
These posters make me so grateful to live in this time period. We still have a ways to go in terms of equality, but damn. I can't even imagine the c**p these women went through. Those were some brave, incredibly tough ladies. They were heroes and this makes me admire them even more.
What a bunch of silly sissies these men were? Afraid of ironing or cooking. Imagine if men had to give birth? There would be a lot less people .
I just love history...do we have equal pay for equal work cartoons now?

that's actually hilarious how absurd these are but sad at the same time because not only it was kind resembling truth (not in a direct way ofc) but sometimes nowadays too. I kinda like this and partly don't - maybe it's too absurd for my tastes

These same ads would be pro-suffrage today... XD The original message of "Oh those poor men" falls pretty short... if the household is that big a mess, why should the women suffer that way any more than the men do? XD
Actually, the women referred to themselves as sufferagists and not the diminutive "sufferagette." And I've never understood the rationale in thinking that being able to vote means that everything else gets upended.
Equal right huh ? Okay then we husband take care of the kids and you the wives go to work and support the family, and husband also take all the wife's monthly salary for the family needs. Do it sound fair ? you all married woman only think that the husband had it easy although today mom always use babysitter to take care of the kids and always keep complaining.
I am all for women having rights and voting but you all are putting the men of that time down way to much they didnt enslave their women they expected things to be fair for the time they would bust there a*s all day and take care of everything outside of the home while the women would take care of the inside it was a partnership not some evil plot by all men. The saying back then was the same as now a happy wife a happy life. I am happy women can work and do what they want now but it didnt help family life at all it just made it where both moms and dads are working now and noone is caring for the kids like they use too which has up caused morals and ethnic all over the world to drop. Having a home where one works and one takes care of the home shouldnt be put as something evil or terrible
I think history will look back on the present and see that most women had equal rights, but some chose rather to focus on the small minority in a few marginal industries where inequality still exists. To truly benefit from the fruits of the suffragette movement you need to accept the gains and move forward. Don't dwell on the past. Believe half of what you hear and form an opinion based upon fact........not Facebook.
I hope bored panda hq hear about down of the meanness here and ban the accounts
