Nature is already quite majestic, but did you know, that wombats have almost perfectly cube-shaped poop? Or that kiwis are practically blind and forage mainly by smell? And, believe it or not, axolotls can regrow lost limbs and even grow new ones! Nature is just full of surprises and weird animal facts.
Bored Panda has chosen a few of the more unexpected animal facts, with which you can definitely blow your colleagues' minds. Just be sure to remember at least one of them in the time of need. And if you thought that human life is rather complex, then after checking these illustrations and animal trivia compiled by A. Stiffler and K. Copeland in a series called Nature is Magic, you might just think otherwise.
Don't forget to check their website called ChaosLife for more fun facts about animals!

Panda Fact
Sorry, but I laughed! Don't be mad at me, please. It wasn't laughing from disrespecting you, I was just surprised.
Load More Replies...Weird Wombat Fact
For anyone who interest why! 'Wombat poo is cubic, not because the wombat has a square-shaped a**s, but because it has a very long and slow digestive process, typically 14 to 18 days, which allows the digestive matter to become extremely dry and compacted. The wombat also has a very long digestive tract, allowing it to absorb the most nutrients and water from its food. The first part of their large intestine contains horizontal ridges that probably mould the poo into cubes, whereas the last part of the large intestine is relatively smooth, allowing the cubic shape to be maintained. The highly compacted nature of the poo means that the r****m is unable to contour the poo into the more usual tubular shape.
I actually know this from Fibbage. That was a funny question. The game was just like "what shape is wombat poop in?"
Facts About Ocean
Only about 3% of the earth's inhabitable space is land. That sea is huuuge...
Lol. I have to give up proving my point, it will eat me up. :)
Load More Replies...They could have moved to our seas already, because we aren't searching there...
Load More Replies...Less than 10%? Correction required: It is estimated that people have explored around 2-3% of the World's oceans. That's much smaller amount than 10%.
Chicken Facts
This, I know, having had chickens for years. They even look sort of dino-ish up close.
You can tell from their terrifying roars and screeches... 'baaawk bawk bawk bawk bawwwww'
Well, but of course, just look at a chicken running, doesn't it remind you of the T-rex from "Jurassic Park", part one?
Yeah, they are an odd species. Only chicks have claws on their wings though.
Load More Replies...Chickens are nurturing birds and show regard to other birds when observed. One day hopefully, chickens may be instead grown by stem cells into the chicken meat product without the factory farming of living animals. That would be progress in both kindness treatment and in pollution reduction as well as in returning animal farmland to better uses.
Learned this.... but not by a teacher but during recess when we had a book of fun facts
Vampire Butterflies
How does that work? You take the butterfly on a binge weekend and ask it to choose between flower juice and blood?
They'll drink urine, too. I think they'll drink anything with any sugar in it, blood and pee included.
Load More Replies...I wish I didn't know this. My son at 6 was afraid of butterflies. He liked to look, but the idea of them landing on him freaked him out. I told him, don't worry, butterflies only drink flower juice. To which he replied "And sometimes people juice." I still call blood people juice. I just didn't know my kid was right.
The insect world is extreme: blood siphoning is a quest for nutrients but insects are cannibalistic. Insects are very needed as a mass collective, to supply every food web in every ecosystem on Earth.
Platypus Fact
They have a third eyelike structure that detects electricity. They don't need optics.
Gives the brag "I can do this with my eyes closed!" a whole new meaning!
They have sensing nodes on their bill… they swim with platy sense!!
Eagle Fact
technical question, how are they actually comparing those two. Eagles grab, bullets hit. am i missing something?
I think they mean the initial strike, before the eagle grabs its prey.
Load More Replies...Starling Facts
City dwelling birds can be really good at imitating sounds, I got fooled by a magpie into believing that there was a kitten stuck on a tree. And it happened to some of my friends as well.
There's some videos on youtube of magpies and other birds (like parrots) imitating cellphone ring tones among other sounds. It's pretty amazing and sometimes kinda creepy.
Load More Replies...Starlings are excellent mimickers! That being said, at the feeder, they are bullies! I see them as one of the "street gangs" of the bird feeder.
Yes. And will stay there all day. Asssholes.
Load More Replies...Fun fact they scare us half to death every now and then and are slowly going exctinct.
I dont know where you are getting your facts, but Starlings are SO prolific, it would take concerted efforts and hundreds of years for them to go extinct! Furthermore, they are an "introduced" or "invader" species to the U.S. They were brought here, unfortunately, from Europe and set free by ONE MAN.
Load More Replies...Hippo Facts
On the behalf of my fellow Humans, we forgive you...
Load More Replies...NOT trying to get political about this LOL, BUT I do believe that Humans are mammals too and I am quite confident people kill more people than Hippos do. Perhaps this should say Hippos kill more humans than any other animal? Still it is pretty shocking how many people are killed by Hippos each year!
I actually knew this. Hippos are the most dangerous animal in the world. They are very territorial
humans are too "Oh it's comin' right for us!!!SHOOT SHOOT!" Uncle Jimbo
Load More Replies...Turkey Facts
Oh, I've never thought that birds can do this. I've only read about Komodo dragons doing this and also, I've seen my stick insects doing this countless of times. I had one baby stick insect, it grew up and it had eggs... And somehow, I ended up taking care of her great great great grandchildren.
That's pretty neat. Never heard of anyone having stick insects like that. Pretty cool!
Load More Replies...turkeys have gender variation, although they don't need it. this is fascinating evolution
Axolotl Facts
That's because they are basically made of stem cells - they are stuck in a biological development limbo (think puberty). If they are injected with iodine, it actually resumes their ontogeny and they become a salamander.
Axolotls are amazing. Save the little water monsters- they're near extinction!
Yeah, man! There's only one place in the world where they live in the wild, and sadly, none have been seen since 2012 or 2013.
Load More Replies...These are so cute! They're like a unicorn chaser for that horrible squid.
Not all lizards, but some (a lot of geckos for example) can drop their tail to distract a predator and grow back a new tail, the new one rarely looks as good as the first x
Load More Replies...Bug Facts
The corpses don't confuse they terrify. if I saw somebody walking around with a backpack full of dead bodies I'd run the other way.
But it's a weird picture. Assassin bugs are relatives of the stink bug and the bed bug... They have a long proboscis.
No they wear them is trophy’s but mostly armor so they can attack more prey without getting as hurt.
Squid Facts
Usually found at depths of 7,000 feet but I'm still going to keep checking under the bed...
That's my aunt Hilda. I'd prefer it if you refrained from talking about her like that.
I googled it. Really strange creature with bizarre anatomy. The reason why these squids induce fear in someone is probably alien-like resemblance, they are just too different and since they managed to stay hidden deep in ocean no one is used to their appearance. But still, when I watched the video, I saw some kind of elegance in their motion. It must be fascinating to see this in real.
those look actually quite elegant...have you heard that there a sea spiders that can grow the size of an elephant? THAT'S disgusting!
Thank you so much for telling us that! (No sarcasm AT ALL) remind me never to go near the sea again! ( I have a phobia of spiders) all I hope is there are no clowns riding the sea spiders with vomit guns ( my three worst fears! Spiders, clowns, and vomit)
Load More Replies...Squid Size Facts
For a second I thought that said 'Sus stop'- LOL. I am now seeing amongus everywhere.
And they have attacked people who are foolish enough to be in the ocean at night. People that have survived the attacks have enormous circle shaped scars on them.
Slow Loris Facts
Their teeth are pulled out... 😔 To make them “safe” as pets. They are wild animals, that is just pure cruelty.
Load More Replies...Wow no "draw me like one of your french girls" comment yet....oh wait a min
The poison is produced from a gland on their armpits. They lick it from their fur and then inject it in the enemy with their teeth.
Unfortunately they are too slow to employ this defense. Many die via poachers grabbing them and shipping them in overcrowded crates. :(
These cute little suckers could try to kill me and I honestly think I would just cuddle them harder.
I have an allergy, and if I have anaphylactic shock, I use an EpiPen. maybe that will work for that venom?
Deep Ocean Facts
Now that is rebellious. nature wants it to swim, it just doesn't give a fu**.
And they move so incredibly slow it makes you wonder why they wouldn't choose to use their fins to swim instead anyways
Hagfish Facts
i wonder what people would choose? getting mugged or getting saved by a superhero bitten by a radioactive hagfish. :D :D
Love how people think it's gross it feeds by corpses....when all we eat are dead things.
They eat them too. And their defense mechanism is to produce a slime that is so thick it chokes any fish, even sharks, foolish enough to try to eat them! YUK!
I know this is a really old post, but I needed to put this out there. This one isn’t actually totally true. They burrow into dead whales and other sea life (starting from the softest part, which is usually the a**s) and basically eat their way through it- though they don’t actually have jaws. They can produce disrespectful amounts of slime from their skin, though.
They can also produce a mucous which expands on contact with the surrounding water into roughly 5 gallons (US) of slime when startled! That would certainly put me off startling one twice!
These have got to be the most disgusting animals ever - their defense mechanism is to permeate sticky goo from their pores so that things can't get ahold of them. Plus they are absolutely disgusting looking - no eyes, no face - just and weird inverted mouth and crazy@$$ teeth.
Sloth Facts
Emu Facts
Fun fact: the two animals on the Australian fifty cent coin- the kangaroo and the emu- are the only two animals that can't walk backwards in Australia
This is why emus and kangaroos are on the Australian coat of arms. They cannot walk backwards
that is why the kangaroo and the emu is on the Australian symbol thingy - there are the only animals in Australia that can't walk backwards
Same for pheasant. We were hunting them as a kids by digging a thin slope hole with grain at the end. Pheasant could come in but couldn't go back or jump from hole.

Giraffe Facts
If you think that's disgusting I dare somebody to Google the mating rituals of a camel. they spread Pee with the tails. They dance, they make weird noises, they have this sack that blows up out of their mouth that they wiggle around. it could be much worse trust me
Ironically camels and giraffes are very close cousins
Load More Replies...There is no question mark needed. It's pretty disgusting.
Load More Replies...ha! i bet you can't fake the old "headache excuse" in a urine sample. also, EWWW.
Most animals communicate through smell. So there is alot of pee smelling and tasting that goes on in nature....So glad humans don't do this.
Kiwi Facts
And the wingspan once they stretch out their wings is smaller than any other bird species if they're an inch long I would be surprised
And they lay the biggest egg relative to body size. It's actually terrifyingly large.
Their eyes are teeny tiny! Echidnas eyes are much like this as well!
Fish Facts
That would be an interesting idea for Aqua man or the little mermaid.
Load More Replies...Hmmm, dolphins do that as well! Dolphins actually use puffer fish to play games that are "sport-like"!
My son used to have these. They are amazingly curious, but sadly that is what always caused their deaths. Any time he would turn off the tank lights to emulate night time, they would jump out of the tank. We tried to cover up any spots we thought they could get thru but it never worked. Apparently Curiosity kills the Elephant Fish too LOL
Flamingo Facts
wait wait wait...you mean to tell that there are people that think they are just some lawn decoration and not a real bird?
I really really really hope not... But there probably are people who think that way...
Load More Replies...Actually that ia thier heel joint and they are standing on tippy toes. (Same with alot of other animals like dogs)
Load More Replies...Must be a beautiful sight seeing them fly through the air :)
Load More Replies...I made a programme on flamingos last year - their eggs often have a blood red yolk!
Well- my uncle's fiancé didn't believe that narwhals existed until they saw them at an aquarium...
I had to go on YouTube and find a video of narwhals for my cousin and friend (both over the age of 30) thought they were myths.
Load More Replies...Here's an interesting fact about them: they get their color because of eating a lot of crabs and shrimp.
They are amazing! There are many that gather in a shallow lake that is actually BOILING HOT and it does NOT burn their feet! They dance around in that heat for mating as if they were in an air conditioned dance studio!
Parasite Facts
I've seen a picture of this and I don't wanna see anymore.. Too much disgusting, for me at least.
i made a mistake of googling it, goodbye sleep.
Load More Replies...If you like the horror behind all this, check out the movie The Bay (2012) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1713476/ Basically these guys invading human hosts. Good stuff. ;) thebay-59d...09d661.jpg
And the funny part is is the fish that's perfectly fine with its tongue being replaced by this bug it doesn't even realize it at least that's what scientists say I think I would know if my tongue was replaced by a bug
Okay I didn't realize until I googled it that this thing actually EATS the fish's tongue. When this said it replaces the to the, I assumed it just attached to the tongue. Nope. It eats it.
I've seen a picture of this on Pinterest........... Let me just tell you that it looked worse in the picture.
Worm Facts
Best Google search of the day unlike the last when I decided to Google which gave me nightmares for the rest of my life
They look psychedelic (not sure if that's the right word)
Load More Replies...Horse Facts
It's called cribbing (or crib biting) involves a horse grasping a solid object such as the stall door or fence rail with its incisor teeth, then arching its neck, and contracting the lower neck muscles to retract the larynx
Yeah, a horse that engages in this has ALWAYS obtained the habit while being "stalled". They begin by seeing other horses do it and it is because of SEVERE BOREDOM and lack of mental stimulation and space to roam and graze. It is sad. (Horse people call this "cribbing".)
I had two horses that were cribbers- they get addicted to it, like smoking. It's a terrible habit- there's a much higher incidence of colic with cribbers- which can be dangerous if not fatal
It could be dangerous because they could inhale something and choke. So most of the time you'd put on a 'cribbing collar'
Leased a horse who was a cribber because he had been previously abused with his first owner off the track. It was sad. He was such an amazing horse would do whatever you asked. Didnt care about anything
We have a horse that does this. Jenny is her name. She only does this after eating grain. She licks the top board of the fence then bites it and then grunts while flexing her neck muscles. She only does this 3 or 4 times and then she is done.
please stop her when she does its not good for her!!
Load More Replies...Maggot Facts
Well, much food colouring and flavours comes from grinded lice, fungi, and microorganisms.
Shouldn't it be ' ground ' ? Or am I wrong ? Maybe I'm just too sleepy
Load More Replies...Everybody so grossed out by eating bugs. lobsters crabs shrimp in any other underwater crustacean is by definition a bug. I guess eating bugs is okay if you're spending $15 a pound on them
And I wondered why people eat those crustaceans. I have zero interest. Just like in eating bugs.
Load More Replies...Cochineal bugs are dried and ground up to give red coloring to many common products including makeup, candy, and up until a few years ago, that one coffee company's strawberry frappé
Our cactus were infested with cochineal a few years ago, I collected a bunch of cochineal for my fiber artist friends- it is a highly prized natural dy
Another fun fact: Most strawberry, raspberry, and vanilla flavoring in candy is made from a beaver's a**l gland!!
Bird Facts
I've seen seagulls sunbathe on one leg I've seen crows sunbathe on one leg think it's just a bird thing
seagulls, crows, flamingos and chickens all do this along with (probably) many others... Maybe birds are just fancy like that.
Also flamingos. And Maasai warriors stand on one leg when watching their cows-- along with a spear.. (Peace Corps experience)
Birds And Gravity
It's just funnier way to say that birds can't actually swallow at all (by using muscles), they just scoop some water into their beaks and let it flow down to their throats.
Load More Replies...Birds don't actually have a gag reflex. That is why you see birds tilting their heads back to slide the food down their throats. The only bird that has a gag reflex is the pigeon.
NASA sent a canary into space and it could neither eat nor drink as there wasn’t enough gravity
Worm Facts
I like how it went from interesting science to random comments lol
If you weren't thought at least 30% of that at school I have bad news for you...
Dear Mother Nature, I applaud you! You have one hell of an imagination!
The "facts" for the bigfin squid and for the flamingo are funny, but the entry for the christmas tree worm was barely even phoned in...
I looked at this tab 2 days after it was created and absolutely no comments then I look today COMMENTS GALORE
This gave me a smile and i got phobias at the same time. Good times
