If you go to—or went to—a great, well-run school with good infrastructure, offerings, awesome teachers, and peers, consider yourself lucky. It turns out not all American schools are created equal. Often, it's the students who pay the price. That could be why some students love school. And others hate it.
American youth have been sharing photos of their schools. A few are really sweet and wholesome. Like the one where kids get a special day to ride their tractors to school. Others might really make you question the state of education in the country. Like the school that spent $1.3 million on new turf for a sports team but claims poverty when it comes to fixing the leaking roof of the main building… Then there's the institution that somehow thought it was perfectly fine to make top students “donate” a percentage of their grades to those who didn’t do as well.
Bored Panda has put together a list of posts that perfectly show just how different one American school is from the next. Tell us all about your own school experience in the comments, and don't forget to upvote your favorite pics.

Public School In California Teaching Us How To File Our Taxes
I had 2 years of wood shop in jr high. It was fun but it didn't really help me with anything, and it's easy to hire somebody if your house needs work. Were there any classes on taxes, investing, or household finances? Of course not.Classes on how to be a parent? Who could need to learn about that?
To be fair, you can also hire people to do your taxes, finances, and investments. We had four years of shop classes (along with home economics classes in junior high) and I learned a lot. Granted, that was 35 years ago. I wish my HS had offered accounting classes, but I did take an auto mechanics class (unfortunately, we spent the majority of the time working on a lawn mower engine, so not very helpful.)
Load More Replies...My senior year government class our teacher was also a CPA (accountant) we got extra credit if we filed our own tax return in his class. He helped us. It was great and I did my own taxes (simple 1040) for many years! Saved tons of money not paying someone else to do it for me!
It has taken a long time for schools to decide to offer classes in important daily matters. How to file your taxes is important for everybody to know. Congratulations to the public schools in California for getting their priorities straight!!!
We learned a little about this at my school, as well as how to apply for jobs, mock interviews (some of which led to actual jobs), making a budget, how to buy a house/car, how to apply for a rental, occupational health and safety, and more. Also tied into our work experience placements. I don't think it was unusual in my area. I hope they still do this at my old school, but I'm not sure since the teacher retired and they got a new principal.
I was in Jr. High (grades 7-8) when Title IX was enacted. Took all sorts of cool classes, like Home Ec., Shop, and Sewing that exposed me to practical skills. Today's kids desperately need real-world classes that will help them as adults.
Refreshing Signs Posted Outside Some Of My Sons Public Elementary School Classrooms
These signs are how children are supposed to be taught how to treat one another.
And yet there are American schools that are ordering their teachers to take down these same signs because they "promote an ideology" not everybody might share.
They call it "grooming". Yes, grooming to be decent people. "Grooming" is the word MAGA types resort to when they have lost an argument about education.
Load More Replies...It is sad that this is even necessary. I just don't get the Amrrican right wing's obsession with gender and interfering and being intolerant towards others people's private lives like it is the biggest issue being faced. If only they were as obsessed with being kind and respectful to other people and teaching their children to do the same like their so called religion says, that would go a long way towards making the world a better place.
It's so sad that the U.S. gov't is planning to pull federal funds from public schools that promote DEI. My grandkids go to an elementary school that's majority Black and they just had an after-school Black History Month event. Doubt they'll be able to do that for the next 3 years. :(

And while some blame the pandemic for the poor state of learning, others say it isn't so. In a piece published on the Fordham Institute's website, David Steiner notes that too many people are stuck sending their kids to underperforming schools.
"Despite nearly $200 billion in emergency federal spending on K–12 schooling, students are doing worse than a decade ago, and lower-performing students are today less capable of doing math than they were thirty-five years ago," writes the education expert.

A local high school to me had to put a stop to students parking their RVs and travel trailers in the school parking lot. Some just found it easier to live at the school rather than a road located in the industrial area of town.
For all the farm families, this really shows them they are important!

It's basically "The Nation’s Report Card," and according to the National Center for Education Statistics website, it's "a resource—a common measure of student achievement—because it offers a window into the state of our K-12 education system and what our children are learning."
What stood out in the NAEP results was the fact that Math and reading scores for 13-year-olds have hit their lowest scores in decades. Steiner cautions that the system is failing children from a very young age.
Our School Spent 1.3 Million On New Turf For A 2-8 Team… But I Get To Deal With This Every Time It Rains Because They Can’t Afford To Fix The Roof
As much as it sounds like a meme, of course, it’s in Ohio.
As an Ohioian knowing our education system has been ruled unconstitutional since the 90s, I'm not surprised in the slightest. Think it's bad now, just wait til that federal funding stops.
Am proud to say our school (now middle school, when I went it was 7th-12th) just celebrated a 100 yr anniversary. That building, despite it's quirks, is just as serviceable as when the foundation was laid. Did a bond improvement in 2017, lots of push back over that as many wanted a complete new building.
Is that a football team? I did go to a US public high school but I've never heard that term before.
2-8 refers to their win record. 2 wins, 8 losses. He's saying the team sucks
Load More Replies...I feel ya. I voted for my kids' school, which I spent 12 years in as well, to spend a million on a "new gym". What we got was zero changes to the gym ... but they added on a state-of-the art weight room for the state champion football team. It's also the only other room in the entire school besides the computer lab that has air conditioning.
The only signs there are actually schools in the US are athletic programs and school shootings.
My Town Has 100% Electric School Buses
Why do american school buses always look so old? Like this one must be relatively new, yet it still looks like it was made in the 50s.
Probably because the famous general design is old, and the busses haven't changed much from that
Load More Replies...Ours went from diesel back to gas. Not sure why they have not taken advantage of having at least one electric.
Not Idaho then, here there's no emissions regulations, any old vehicle can belch out black smoke.
Regular, large electric school buses each cost about $334K (Feb 2024 prices https://www.empirecenter.org/publications/turning-nys-yellow-buses-green-could-cost-8b/). Some school districts own their own and others contract with a busing company. Regular diesel school busses cost about $150K. [These prices are obviously before tariff prices.]
After the first fire or dead battery they will all be sent to the dump. It's happened in places already.
Columns At A School Are Pencils (MN)
Steiner likens Pre-K to the Wild West... He explains that students are entering kindergarten with large gaps in their readiness to learn. "Children aren’t seriously assessed until they are 8, by which time it’s too late for sustained intervention; the gaps never close," he wrote.
And from there, it's a vicious cycle where the kids pay the price. "Curricula, tests, and teacher education programs exist in deep silos, creating a fragmented system where teachers aren’t trained to teach the materials their schools use and tests don’t test students’ mastery of those materials (with a tiny exception in Louisiana)." the expert added.
Genuinely Cool Thing My School Does. This Bin Has Ice On The Bottom So Any Student That Don't Want Their Fruit That Is Mandatory To Grab With Lunch Can Be Put Into A Cold Area
Other students who are still hungry can get it. Anything that isn't taken at the end of the day is put back into rotation the next day, that way there isn't any untouched fruit wasted.
The heading’s a bit garbled but I think they’re saying that Kia’s who don’t want their fruit can leave it in there for kids who do want it.
Load More Replies...The smarter thing to do would be to purchase less apples and replace it with someothing the kids will actually consume. How many times are the apples recycled?
But then there wouldn't be seconds for kids who want them. This way, there is enough for everyone to take, if wanted, rather than running out. And who knows, they may reduce their orders some days to manage stock and ensure they use up their excess.

"With the current U.S. population of about 333 million people, that breaks down to one school for every 2,892 people," notes the MDR site.

My Little Sister Ended Up Getting The Same Physics Book I Had In High School, 10 Years Later
My guess is that Physics just isn't a very popular subject. We're from Kentucky, and people don't really value the sciences in the south.
Ye canna change the laws of physics ... but ye CAN discover new stuff all the time. :)
What we know and understand about physics has changed, or why would physicists keep working? Einstein broadened snd in parts supplanted the Newtonian view of the universe, that's how science works.
Load More Replies..."and people don't really value the sciences in the south". What a sad state of affairs.
The last name probably began with an "A", so of course the numbered books will be first handed out. That doesn't explain the lack of usage from 2011 - 2018, though.
Books are only supposed to be 8 yrs old. During the 8th yr the next books are chosen. Of course, doesn’t always work that way. In 6th grade, 1976, our science books only talked about travel to the moon in the future!
Kentucky isnt the South (not a former Confederate state), its the midwest. Is this person really from there?
South and Confederate are not necessarily the same. Kentucky was a slave state throughout its history until slavery was abolished nation-wide. Its economy was southern, based on crops like tobacco. Politically, it was always part of the southern coalition, both before and after the Civil War. It's culture and social customs were identical to states like Virginia and North Carolina. However, you are quite right when you used the present tense. Kentucky's economy and culture has transformed it into a state more compatable with the Midwest than the South. Its growth in the manufacturing sector and a more diversified agricutural system caused it to be reclassified in the second half of the twentieth century as being part of the Midwest. The same is generally true with Missouri, a former southern slave state, which is also now more frequently grouped in the Midwest.

So, if I read this one correctly, the women hs all the power to control the men and they are powerless marionettes in our grasp? Great! Lets skip the lady-variant and see what other fun stuff we can make the men become, as they are helpless and cany control their behaviour and emotions without being led by a womans example.
I don't read it that way. I read it as a male will treat a female accordingly - as a "lady" or "something else." It's the male's non-gentleman's response to a non-lady that is especially troubling.

BTW, just a thought: it might be worthwhile teaching all kids regardless of what genitals they might have or whatever their gender to be respectful of other people regardless of what genitals they might have or whatever their gender.
Thats a Quote of Sydney Biddle Barrows. She is an American businesswoman and socialite who became known as an escort agency owner under the name Sheila Devin; she later became known as "The Mayflower Madam".
There are many things wrong with this slogan. Not the least of which is the fact it isn't true.
That's like saying she was asking for it because her hijab showed an extra half-inch of her arms.
The country is also facing a severe lack of educators. American schools have high student-to-teacher ratios driven by a massive K-12 teacher shortage, warns education institution Elevate K-12. "Faced with disciplinary problems and low school funding, schools have focused on staffing classrooms at all costs," reads that site, adding that class sizes have become larger at the expense of quality teaching.

So When Did Public High School Cafeterias Start Looking More Like Mall Food Courts? (Byron Nelson Hs, Tx)
Since the funding for school dinners got withdrawn, I assume. And look, the students can do work experience without having to leave the campus! /s
I would have loved this in HS! We were allowed to leave campus during our lunch break and every year there were multiple student accidents due to them rushing to get back in time (nothing was within walking distance, at least if wanted any hope of not returning late). If they were going to get fast food anyway, why not keep it close? Although we actually had good cafeteria food on campus, the choices were obviously limited.
When Michele Obama tried to promote healthy eating the right wing lost it.
I doubt any of those, even Subway, would pass the heart smart requirements that canteen/tuck shops in Australia have to meet.
This Is A Public School On Tacoma, WA. Stadium High School
Public schools were once built to not only house learning, they were also built to be an aesthetically pleasing part of the community, something to be proud of. So many villages, towns, and cities have demolished these beautiful structures instead of updating them. Newer schools are more apt to have a glorious football field than great architecture. Priorities I guess.

According to Elevate K-12, the number of under-qualified teaching hires increased by 69% from 2022–2023. "When students have underqualified teachers or full-time substitutes, they’re more likely to experience learning delays, low graduation rates, and test scores below grade level," notes the site.
It's often the poor that feel it the most... And the institution warns that the crisis in public education is "widening student achievement gaps, causing a dangerous feedback loop that disproportionately affects Black students, low-income students, and students with special educational needs."
"My Friend's Son Came Home From School Thursday With A Stamp On His Arm That Said "Lunch Money" Because His Account Was Low"
Some of you may remember when Philando Castille was shot by police in his car in Minnesota. He was a cafeteria worker who had done nothing wrong. His mother, Valerie Castile, "has made significant contributions to paying off student lunch debts in honor of her son. In May 2019, she donated $8,000 to Robbinsdale Cooper High School in New Hope, Minnesota, to cover unpaid student lunch debts for seniors preparing to graduate." I'm not sure if she continued the work, but she's an inspiration. If my son died, I'd drink myself to death, and if he died through such an injustice, I'd do it quickly.
In the school's defense, my sons lost 90% of the notes that were sent home from school with them, as well as ones they came to school with. Every semester I would have to go justify someone's absence because they lost the excuse note. Their backpacks were apparently black holes that could make notes and library books vanish between the car and the school front door..
This is how they did it in my elementary school. I always thought it was normal until now.
How is this any different than when H*******t victims were permanently inked with serial numbers? Shameful and horrifying.
I mean, as a student, I like this idea, kinda. It's not necessarily a sign that someone's family is financially disadvantaged, and few would assume that, prolly. And I can't hardly remember anything unless I write it on my arm, so a stamp is nice and convenient. Just my ¢¢, though.
I know Americans hate it when someone gets something for "free", but I think school lunches should be provided for all students. Provide decent food, both good and nutritious, the kids come out ahead.

I work at a public school. Unfortunately this happens all the time. I see perfectly good laptops go into e-waste all the time. The issue is most of the school equipment is purchased with bond money and schools are not allowed to donate that equipment; it has to be thrown away. Makes me so sad!

The last school shooting in Georgia had.a low death count because of the protection put in place. Doors automatically lock when closed. The shooter tried to get back in the room but couldn't. He couldn't get into any classroom. The teacher's ID card has a button you can press to signal the emergency. He was found quicker this way. His victims were those already in the hallway or stepped outside the classroom when hearing the shots.
Social media isn't helping when it comes to the poor state of education and the well-being of learners. "American teenagers stare at social media on a screen almost nine hours every day, with one result being surging loneliness and depression," wrote Steiner.

Upvoted the downvote - as My O My pointed out, those are the right questions to ask. You don't just need firing range practice. You need training in assessing risk and dealing with it in a realistic setting - staged in a training area that simulates a school - with multiple people acting various parts (panicking children and teachers, one or more potential threats, etc., etc.) Just knowing how to keep your weapon safe and shoot straight is only about 1% of what you need to get good at.

How and why is this a thing?! I have teacher friends who have said that they MUST fund their own classrooms. Tragic. As much taxes as we pay and they have to still do c**p like this?! Outrageous.
Who thinks of this dehumanizing shït? When will the US realize a good education costs money, lots of it, good pay for solid educators, equipment, supplies, books, and on and on. Just one look at ranked student proficiencies tells ya the US education system is sinking compared to the rest of the industrialized world. The once great public school system of the US has been starved and neutered, sad.
The ice rink is likely not a part of the school, but is local to the school district.

When I was in high school (UK) we didn't have lockers you carried your bag and all your books around with you all day. Don't know if it's changed now or not.
Load More Replies...I was in high school in the 80s. Grade 7 through 12 at one school .small town. By 10th grade for sure we had to share lockers that were the size of the one in the photo with one other person. We had 4 minutes between classes. We could usually visit our locker twice a day.
I'm Germany you have classrooms that are specific to one class of students. Means you had all your stuff in there, "your" desk and teachers would come to you for lessons. Only for subjects like chemistry, PE, music and physics you left your classroom, because these subjects needed special equipment. You left everything you didn't need at your desk in these instances
Is This Gap In The Bathroom Too Big? I Went To The Bathroom Stall And I Noticed This Gap. Is This Normal? I Feel Like You Can Practically See Someone Through It When Walking In
I used to work at a place that had bathroom gaps nearly that big. I'd hang my sport coat to cover the gap. It was ridiculous as the stalls faced the door.
If ours were like that when I went to school, I would have been holding on all day!
Read somewhere that this a problem esp in the U.S. That most toilets have doors that go lower an higher also.
Bathroom Passes In USA School
So the teacher is OK with kids peeing in their pants? In middle school my math teacher wouldn't let me use the bathroom during class because we were taking a test. So I sat with my arms folded refusing to take the test and squirmed in my seat until she finally got the picture. You should never be allowed to deny a kid their own bodily functions.
I sort of understand that you cant leave during tests as that might be used for cheating. If we leave during certain tests we have to do another, different test later.

I had one student who had severe problems in this area. I gave him a seat by the door and told him "If you need to go, just catch my eye and go. If you can't catch my eye, go anyway."
Ridiculous. Didn't the USA fight in WW II for freedom from dictatorship ?
As a teacher, I cannot outright deny a student a bathroom break. I can have them wait until a break or a transition, but not outright denial.
And that's how I ended up peeing my pants during recess in the 5th grade in a small town and ended up being branded by it until I graduated and left. Sure, make them wait. Surely you won't scar all of them for life.
Load More Replies...Our teachers had a sign in-out page, per my request. If kids think they are being timed, they are less likely to destroy the rest rooms during class.
Some years I have to do that when kids are not using bathroom breaks correctly (going 3-4 times an hour for 5-10 minutes, literally, or we have kids trashing bathrooms/peeing all over the walls and need to monitor who was there when it happened). I am so grateful that I rarely need to do that.
Load More Replies...As a teacher, one tries to teach responsibility. If they cannot use the restroom during their assigned breaks, it didn't hurt my feelings to see them squirm for a bit. But after the incident, the student learned the proper time to use the restroom. "Try to go, even if you don't have to. Guaranteed that you will get out some tinkle." The menstrual cycle thing, that a free pass anytime.
This High School In Pennsylvania Has Signs That Specify Whether You Can Or Cannot Open The Windows That Day
huge parts of PA are either Coal mining or Oil drilling country, and a lot of meat and food processing plants. This is probably air quality related
For what purpose? I can see not wanting the windows open if the heating system is on. Or maybe the air quality outside?

Burning coal - killing then, killing now, raising sea levels now and in the future.)
Let's not forget the other carcinogens in coal smoke!

It'd be much cooler if they were allowed to display books banned in US states.
The way things are going, they'd have to add another wing to the library.
Load More Replies...The most effective way to prevent a student from reading a book is to insist that they do so.
Not sure the other countries part of the title is 100% accurate. Top left book, 'Fahrenheit 451' by Ray Bradbury is not currently banned in the United States. It has previously been banned in other countries like Australia and South Africa, and states like Florida, Texas, and even California.
Love this idea. Read all the banned books. Be what they hate, educated and informed! I see Fahrenheit 451 and it's about banned books!
In the 2024/23 school year, there were 4,231 books banned in US schools (10,046 separate bans on 4231 individual titles - it's an organized campaign by well funded far right authoritarian groups). https://pen.org/book-bans/pen-america-index-of-school-book-bans-2023-2024/

There Is A School At My Local Shopping Mall (North County Mall In Escondido)
not exactly, a Charter school rented out part of a mall to use for advanced classes, a large study library, etc, bc they needed the extra space for programs after school, and the mall gave them a good deal to fill up empty room, and they thought a few hundred HS Students after school in the mall would be good for businesses
That's actually much closer to how the creator of the suburban mall envisioned them. The intent was that they should mimic European villages with stores, schools, professional services, community gathering spaces and even residences. https://theconversation.com/triumph-of-the-mall-how-victor-gruens-grand-urban-vision-became-our-suburban-shopping-reality-172393
I had a dream a few weeks ago where I was in a shopping centre and there was a school inside it too. Never would have considered it being real.
This is a great use of space if you ask me! We have to start thinking outside the box about uses for older buildings that have outlived their original purpose. Why put down more concrete and build another building if there's one available? Pivot people!

I finished school in 1993. About 2% of people had mobile phones at school, and none was smart (phone, that is)

My high school (and I think the entire district) implemented these this year, but won't be enforcing until next year. Unfortunate as it is, I see more people on their phones than doing work, so I understand the need for it. Hopefully teachers make exceptions when needed though.
My school made us keep them in our lockers. We got a detention if a teacher saw us with one. I think my state has brought in this as a rule at all schools now.
My Schools “Full Renovation” Budget. The School Year Has Been Delayed Months Because Of This
Some context: this is a public Highschool, the rest of the building is mostly ok, but not great. Biggest problem I know of is heat that stops working if it gets too cold outside, at like 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit. This is in Minnesota.
Looks like the sports facilities are the only thing that matters.
Places like this are basically sports arenas with a side hussle in education.
Load More Replies...I call BS on this. EVERY school is required to operate a certain number of days per school year. If building construction delays school by "months", those kids are going to be in school for the entire summer too. This is a exaggeration. By a lot.
