If you go to—or went to—a great, well-run school with good infrastructure, offerings, awesome teachers, and peers, consider yourself lucky. It turns out not all American schools are created equal. Often, it's the students who pay the price. That could be why some students love school. And others hate it.

American youth have been sharing photos of their schools. A few are really sweet and wholesome. Like the one where kids get a special day to ride their tractors to school. Others might really make you question the state of education in the country. Like the school that spent $1.3 million on new turf for a sports team but claims poverty when it comes to fixing the leaking roof of the main building… Then there's the institution that somehow thought it was perfectly fine to make top students “donate” a percentage of their grades to those who didn’t do as well.

Bored Panda has put together a list of posts that perfectly show just how different one American school is from the next. Tell us all about your own school experience in the comments, and don't forget to upvote your favorite pics.

I had 2 years of wood shop in jr high. It was fun but it didn't really help me with anything, and it's easy to hire somebody if your house needs work. Were there any classes on taxes, investing, or household finances? Of course not.Classes on how to be a parent? Who could need to learn about that?

To be fair, you can also hire people to do your taxes, finances, and investments. We had four years of shop classes (along with home economics classes in junior high) and I learned a lot. Granted, that was 35 years ago. I wish my HS had offered accounting classes, but I did take an auto mechanics class (unfortunately, we spent the majority of the time working on a lawn mower engine, so not very helpful.)

My senior year government class our teacher was also a CPA (accountant) we got extra credit if we filed our own tax return in his class. He helped us. It was great and I did my own taxes (simple 1040) for many years! Saved tons of money not paying someone else to do it for me!

Meanwhile, the Polish tax office is doing that for you automatically. You can file your own tax declaration, but if you don't do it, it will be filed for you, so you don't build tax debt.

I was talking to friends (late 40s, UK) last night. They admitted they knew very little about pensions and tax. We agreed that this sort of thing should at least be spoken about at school. It’s critical to our wellbeing.

We learned a little about this at my school, as well as how to apply for jobs, mock interviews (some of which led to actual jobs), making a budget, how to buy a house/car, how to apply for a rental, occupational health and safety, and more. Also tied into our work experience placements. I don't think it was unusual in my area. I hope they still do this at my old school, but I'm not sure since the teacher retired and they got a new principal.

It is sad that this is even necessary. I just don't get the Amrrican right wing's obsession with gender and interfering and being intolerant towards others people's private lives like it is the biggest issue being faced. If only they were as obsessed with being kind and respectful to other people and teaching their children to do the same like their so called religion says, that would go a long way towards making the world a better place.

Many believe that American education is in shambles. The Covid pandemic highlighted a lot of the flaws in the system. And while some blame the pandemic for the poor state of learning, others say it isn't so. In a piece published on the Fordham Institute's website, David Steiner notes that too many people are stuck sending their kids to underperforming schools.

"Despite nearly $200 billion in emergency federal spending on K–12 schooling, students are doing worse than a decade ago, and lower-performing students are today less capable of doing math than they were thirty-five years ago," writes the education expert.

Steiner was commenting on what's known as the National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP. It's basically "The Nation’s Report Card," and according to the National Center for Education Statistics website, it's "a resource—a common measure of student achievement—because it offers a window into the state of our K-12 education system and what our children are learning."

What stood out in the NAEP results was the fact that Math and reading scores for 13-year-olds have hit their lowest scores in decades. Steiner cautions that the system is failing children from a very young age.

Regular, large electric school buses each cost about $334K (Feb 2024 prices https://www.empirecenter.org/publications/turning-nys-yellow-buses-green-could-cost-8b/). Some school districts own their own and others contract with a busing company. Regular diesel school busses cost about $150K. [These prices are obviously before tariff prices.]

Steiner likens Pre-K to the Wild West... He explains that students are entering kindergarten with large gaps in their readiness to learn. "Children aren’t seriously assessed until they are 8, by which time it’s too late for sustained intervention; the gaps never close," he wrote.

And from there, it's a vicious cycle where the kids pay the price. "Curricula, tests, and teacher education programs exist in deep silos, creating a fragmented system where teachers aren’t trained to teach the materials their schools use and tests don’t test students’ mastery of those materials (with a tiny exception in Louisiana)." the expert added.

That's not something that I've ever seen in Australia. Classroom doors either open inward or are sliding doors. Is it actually faster in an evacuation? It's never been mentioned in any emergency management plan I've read.

The sad reality is in today’s America- those doors can’t be effectively barricaded during lockdowns. Worse if they have a little window that can be broken to unlock the door from the inside. I worry about this with my own classroom.

According to education sector marketing company MDR Education, there are a total of 115,171 schools in the United States. This number is made up of K-12 public and private schools, adult education, and career/technical schools. "With the current U.S. population of about 333 million people, that breaks down to one school for every 2,892 people," notes the MDR site.

    Michael Largey

South and Confederate are not necessarily the same. Kentucky was a slave state throughout its history until slavery was abolished nation-wide. Its economy was southern, based on crops like tobacco. Politically, it was always part of the southern coalition, both before and after the Civil War. It's culture and social customs were identical to states like Virginia and North Carolina. However, you are quite right when you used the present tense. Kentucky's economy and culture has transformed it into a state more compatable with the Midwest than the South. Its growth in the manufacturing sector and a more diversified agricutural system caused it to be reclassified in the second half of the twentieth century as being part of the Midwest. The same is generally true with Missouri, a former southern slave state, which is also now more frequently grouped in the Midwest.

Lets skip the lady-variant and see what other fun stuff we can make the men become, as they are helpless and cany control their behaviour and emotions without being led by a womans example.

I don't read it that way. I read it as a male will treat a female accordingly - as a "lady" or "something else." It's the male's non-gentleman's response to a non-lady that is especially troubling.

The country is also facing a severe lack of educators. American schools have high student-to-teacher ratios driven by a massive K-12 teacher shortage, warns education institution Elevate K-12. "Faced with disciplinary problems and low school funding, schools have focused on staffing classrooms at all costs," reads that site, adding that class sizes have become larger at the expense of quality teaching.

I would have loved this in HS! We were allowed to leave campus during our lunch break and every year there were multiple student accidents due to them rushing to get back in time (nothing was within walking distance, at least if wanted any hope of not returning late). If they were going to get fast food anyway, why not keep it close? Although we actually had good cafeteria food on campus, the choices were obviously limited.

Public schools were once built to not only house learning, they were also built to be an aesthetically pleasing part of the community, something to be proud of. So many villages, towns, and cities have demolished these beautiful structures instead of updating them. Newer schools are more apt to have a glorious football field than great architecture. Priorities I guess.

According to Elevate K-12, the number of under-qualified teaching hires increased by 69% from 2022–2023. "When students have underqualified teachers or full-time substitutes, they’re more likely to experience learning delays, low graduation rates, and test scores below grade level," notes the site.

It's often the poor that feel it the most... And the institution warns that the crisis in public education is "widening student achievement gaps, causing a dangerous feedback loop that disproportionately affects Black students, low-income students, and students with special educational needs."

Some of you may remember when Philando Castille was shot by police in his car in Minnesota. He was a cafeteria worker who had done nothing wrong. His mother, Valerie Castile, "has made significant contributions to paying off student lunch debts in honor of her son. In May 2019, she donated $8,000 to Robbinsdale Cooper High School in New Hope, Minnesota, to cover unpaid student lunch debts for seniors preparing to graduate." I'm not sure if she continued the work, but she's an inspiration. If my son died, I'd drink myself to death, and if he died through such an injustice, I'd do it quickly.

In one respect I’m glad there are steps being made to protect children, on the other hand, it’s so sad that this is needed in the first place. I can only imagine that American parents must worry so much about a shooting happing at their child’s school, a place they should absolutely be safe from harm.

The last school shooting in Georgia had.a low death count because of the protection put in place. Doors automatically lock when closed. The shooter tried to get back in the room but couldn't. He couldn't get into any classroom. The teacher's ID card has a button you can press to signal the emergency. He was found quicker this way. His victims were those already in the hallway or stepped outside the classroom when hearing the shots.

Yes, because historically the people that have entered schools or other public areas and shot and k****d men, women, and children were definitely law-abiding citizens who obtained their guns legally. The fact that everyone seems to forget that criminals do not follow the law is wild to me, gun laws are not the issue.

When my son was in grade school the school district floated a plan to buy extra text books so the students could keep a book at home and have one to use in the classroom. Parents (and board members) said it was too expensive to double the amount of books purchased. My son, who was in grade school, pointed out that it really only required an extra 30-50 books as the extras would only be used in the classroom and could be used by multiple classes during the day. Nope. Too expensive.

Textbooks are big business. Those companies can make huge profits and what they charge per textbook is crazy. I've never understood why the textbooks are privatized and such a rip off instead of the government investing in making them. We don't use any textbooks at ALL at my school, too expensive. The amount of prep work to make an entire curriculum from scratch without textbooks is outrageous.

Have they been given any training on how to use firearms? Do they go to a firing range to practice their accuracy so they don't hit students? Does the school take legal responsibility in writing for anything a teacher might do with a gun? I'm betting on "no-cubed".

Upvoted the downvote - as My O My pointed out, those are the right questions to ask. You don't just need firing range practice. You need training in assessing risk and dealing with it in a realistic setting - staged in a training area that simulates a school - with multiple people acting various parts (panicking children and teachers, one or more potential threats, etc., etc.) Just knowing how to keep your weapon safe and shoot straight is only about 1% of what you need to get good at.

Since America got all N**i about health in schools kids are required to take a dairy/healthy drink and at least 2-3 fruits and veggies. However, since it doesn’t fit the narrative it’s never reported. Tsk tsk. I fell for it for a while but I work at a public school and I’m jealous of what these Californian kiddos eat for lunch… free! My middle school took the doors off the toilets in the lunch area, supposedly to make it harder for kids to smoke (1977)? Except that was the only time you could count on getting to use the restroom! Sometimes we went in twos for one person to stand in the doorway while the other does her business. Top 5 of hated things at my middle school.

Let's get the facts though. Why indeed are there no doors? Perhaps because of illegal activities occurring in said stalls? As an educator, I totally get it. I would also allow any student to use a single stall staff bathroom at any time too.

As an educator, I don't get it. Bring up children in trust. Deal with consequences if they do the wrong thing, but don't take their privacy away from everyone because of it. It is a basic human right to have access to privacy when using the toilet. There are child safety reasons to not have to use a staff toilet.

Just one look at ranked student proficiencies tells ya the US education system is sinking compared to the rest of the industrialized world. I'm Germany you have classrooms that are specific to one class of students. Means you had all your stuff in there, "your" desk and teachers would come to you for lessons. Only for subjects like chemistry, PE, music and physics you left your classroom, because these subjects needed special equipment. You left everything you didn't need at your desk in these instances

As a teacher, one tries to teach responsibility. If they cannot use the restroom during their assigned breaks, it didn't hurt my feelings to see them squirm for a bit. But after the incident, the student learned the proper time to use the restroom. "Try to go, even if you don't have to. Guaranteed that you will get out some tinkle." The menstrual cycle thing, that a free pass anytime.
