50 Times Architects Really Outdid Themselves And People Celebrated Their Works Online
Architecture is meant to fulfill both practical and expressive requirements, and thus it serves both utilitarian and aesthetic purposes. When you look at a structure, you can distinguish these two ends but they cannot be separated, and the relative weight each of them carry can vary widely. Plus, every society has its own, unique relationship to the natural world and its architecture usually reflects that as well, allowing people from other places to learn about their environment, as well as history, ceremonies, artistic sensibility, and many aspects of daily life.
However, architecture is better seen, not described. So, let me introduce you to "the beautiful impossibilities that we want to live in", a subreddit dedicated to high-quality images of some of the most impressive (concept) buildings out there. This online community already has over 617K members, and the pictures they share are absolutely gorgeous. Continue scrolling and take a look!

Semi-Destroyed In 1979 By The Earthquake In Albania. Rebuilt Two Years Ago
It's beautiful, I won't argue that, but hopefully the new architect thought of future earthquakes and made this house more structurally stable so it doesn't happen again! That glass doesn't look too earthquake-proof...
Reminds me of kintsugi-the Japanese tradition of repairing broken things with gold. By integrating the modern glass into this building, they've managed to preserve a part of its history (the earthquake)
Yes, exactly what I was thinking. They could have repaired it so it looked undamaged but they retained the damage so it tells that part of its story proudly.

Awesome building, Always liked it. Whoever decided to put mirrored glass behind the tree made the right choice ;)
The Art Nouveau ‘Gran Hotel Ciudad De México’, 1899, By French Architect, Jacques Grüber
Older architecture is just better... it looks way better than the straight lines and lack of colour we have these days
This kind of work takes a lot of craftspeople detailed time and significant investment. It would add millions to the cost of a new building. It's too bad we don't value it nowadays.
Load More Replies...I know the architects deserve commendation for such neat designs but TBH I'm more impressed with the people that actually built it and figured out how to install it.
Hah, puts me very much in mind of the remark that "If Michelangelo was straight, the Sistine Chapel would have been painted cream, with a roller".
Load More Replies...Urbany also pointed out the importance of smart home technology. "Anyone with a smartphone or voice-activated speakers, like Amazon Echo or Google Home, knows the convenience of home features that can be controlled via a simple swipe, utterance, or in-home video panel," the architect said.
"Not only are these features convenient, but many — including lighting and heating/cooling control — can reap real rewards on monthly utility bills. For architects, the challenge becomes creating spaces to house any mechanicals and the necessary wiring that goes along with them."
This Spiral Staircase Carved From A Single Tree In 1851 - Located In Lednice Castle, Czech Republic
Oh my goodness what an absolute wonderful piece of art, that will last and last . I’d love to walk down this
its amazing, but i cant help but think how magnificent that tree must have been before it was killed to make a staircase
in the castle park (worth to see it is beautifull park) there are oaks (i think it's oaks) so huge that four of us barely hug it...that magnificent ;)
Load More Replies...May be a little misleading. Yes, a single tree, but the tree was cut up to make the staircase. No nails used ("Made from the wood of a single oak tree, not carved as one piece, made and joined using wooden pegs not nails")
El Dee: you wrote "... But in a single piece? I doubt that very much.." What makes you think that? Have you done a lot of woodcarving yourself? My friend who is a European-trained classical woodcarver says that how it would have been made to be sure joints did not fail on stairs. I'd like to know more about your opinion.

Wisteria Blossoms Surrounding The Entrance Of A Victorian Townhouse In San Francisco
Beautiful! Reminds me of an instagram account I once saw that posted the "beautiful front doors" of London, a lot had wisteria. :)
Gorgeous BUT....not wishing to be a killjoy, BUT...wisteria is extremely invasive and has a mind of its own. If not tended to on a regular basis can and does all but destroy wooden features of a home e.g. the eaves and window frames. Again...I agree this is gorgeous but owners, BEWARE!!!! "She" needs a lot of TLC!!!
It appears they have been taking excellent care of both the wisteria and the house for a very long time. It's obvious they have provided ample TLC.
Load More Replies...Wisteria is beautiful, but it's a nightmare on structures. People don't understand the power it has to bring down entire buildings. For this reason, it's a terrible choice for landscaping.
I wrote the same thing (see above!!!)....it has been known to take whole houses down!! Beauty isn't always a gentle "soul" and can be more of a beast than its looks imply!!
Load More Replies...Please god- put a gay couple (or many) on my block.
Load More Replies...Asian wisteria is invasive in the US and I'm pretty sure the only US native wisteria is specific to the east coast. Wisteria is pretty, but please stop planting invasive species. Native plants are pretty, too.
Wisteria can also cause severe damage to wood structures! It twines into every crevice & can literally pull a building apart.
Load More Replies...Another important aspect of contemporary architecture is sustainability. After all, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), buildings generate nearly 40% of annual global GHG emissions.
"It's no surprise the trend is towards creating more energy-efficient buildings, but also to develop homes that use, and leak less energy," Urbany explained.
"The pinnacle of this type of design is a net-zero home that literally has no net energy consumption. This is achieved by not only reducing energy consumption but by adding energy creation on the site, typically in the form of solar panels."
Zhongshuge Bookstore In Chengdu, China
Yeah, me too. It does seem awesome, though. Maybe with a drone and a search engine? Don't know if the technology exists already, but it would be cool if you could type into your phone the book you're searching for and the drone finds it and brings it to you, or guides you to where it is.
Load More Replies...Not to burst the book lover's bubble, but it's China. Half of the titles you want may have been censored and made unavailable by the CCP.
This is majestic... it almost looks like some futuristic alien planet with lights on all the buildings
That seems to me a bit difficult to get around and get the books conveniently.
A Spiral Staircase Designed By Leonardo Da Vinci In The Year 1516
It’s amazing how something so intricate and detailed was designed and built so long ago.
Old buildings are more likely to be intricate and detailed because 1) it was the taste and 2) it was a mark of power and wealth.
Load More Replies...DaVinci was a creative genius and this staircase is another attribute to that fact.
The Kansas City Public Library
I'm from KC, and one other amazing thing is, this isn't even the library. It's the parking garage next door. The library itself is housed in a century-old former bank building with marble columns, massive bronze doors, etc. - very fancy and very traditional. This parking garage was built just across the street in 2004.
All of the book titles they used were former 'banned' books, makes me love it all the more!
No, they don't change them. The library board solicited recommendations from the citizens of Kansas City, and then the board chose which titles to use. The installation was done in 2004, and is installed on a parking garage across the street from the actual library. The library is in a huge old former bank building that I worked in back in 1970!
Load More Replies...Even if net-zero is too lofty a goal, architects are urged to implement as many sustainable features as possible. These include well-sealed building envelopes, efficient insulation, multi-panel windows, and energy-efficient appliances and systems.
TMD STUDIO, a London-and-Prague-based group of young professionals operating within the fields of architecture, visualizations, interior design, and research, agrees that sustainable architecture holds the key to an environmentally positive future.
"Only by living more economically with our resources can we hope to protect our environment and climate," TMD STUDIO wrote.
Natural History Museum, London
My favourite place on the planet. There are tiny monkeys built into the walls everywhere. Its a cathedral to nature.
This is one of the most beautiful but often underrated buildings in London. Stunning
Vietnam's Golden Bridge
I've always thought it was incredibly beautiful, although I understand those who see it in a more dystopian frame
I'd feel safe on that bridge knowing that there are two giant hands holding it.
This is a lot more spiritually healthy than the faces of the presidents in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Wow! When it was new, the fingers were all white. Looks like it aged 20 years!
I always thought this was in China . Well , you learn something new everyday

Early 1900's Craftsman Home In Seattle
If my dear friend Bilbo's Bag End home, well, later belonging to the Gamgee family, hadn't a round door, and wasn't in a hole, I imagine this is exactly what it would look line.
Load More Replies...This totally looks like a cottage Snow White and the Seven Dwarves would live in
I'd like to live in a house that looked like that and had those gardens.
"By keeping the energy we consume within our buildings for as long as possible, we need less supply in the first place," TMD STUDIO said. "Using less energy to keep us comfortable means that we can become environmentally responsible and more resource-efficient, which are both vital to reducing the effects of climate change."
According to the organization, there are three overriding concerns when designing buildings with better considerations towards ecological impact: the first is the materials used for construction, the second concern is the energy efficiency of the building and the last factor to consider is the location of the building itself.
"The building might be energy efficient and use low impact construction technologies but this would not mean anything if the ecosystem suffers as a result of the building. A greater holistic approach to all of these design factors is becoming more prevalent in mainstream architecture."
This Apartment Building In Tel Aviv, Israel
There's one extra solution if you accidentally lock yourself out: Parkour!
Is this a photo or a concept? These people on the left don't look real and I think we shouldn't compare ideas to real-life buildings.
If it were real, it probably wouldn't look as neat and tidy. There would be laundry on the balconies, the plants would look different for each apartment (or some wouldn't have any at all), and it would be much more colorful!
Load More Replies...Fun fact: in Israel the balconies are tiered like that so that ever unit has a portion of it's balcony under the sky. This is so Jews can celebrate Sukkot properly. During Sukkot, huts which are called... sukkot are constructed and Jewish law requires that you can see the stars through the cracks in the roof of the hut!
I don’t like it. You’re all squished, looks like the balconies would block a lot of natural light, and it’s be super easy to spy on people below you.
Trust me, we WANT some of the heat blocked. Most windows here have absolutely no shade coverings except for metal rolldown security guards. Covering helps keep down our a/c & electric bills.
Load More Replies...Tall towers with garden balconies and miles of open country in between. That's the way to save the Earth and human sanity, too.
House In Art Nouveau Style, Brussels, Belgium
My kids think I am weird because I say that about so many homes lol how I would love to see the inside and how it is decorated and how much of the original house is still there! Glad I'm not alone
Load More Replies...Because of its geometric quality believe this one is art deco, not art nouveau, which would have more organic, flowing lines. Correct me if I am wrong; I am not an expert.
It really is a shame how many Art Nouveau buildings were destroyed in Brussels, to be replaced with concrete and glass. Luckily, those that survived are protected buildings now. This one was the house and studio of glass artist Clas Grüner Sterner.
The Ceiling Of The Shah Mosque In Isfahan, Iran
This is tile mosaic! (still salute to the artists - its stunning)
Load More Replies...The beauty of some of the places shown in this post bring me to the brink of tears. These are the things that mankind does that we can be proud of... now if we can just get the other not so proud things up to this level what an incredible place this world would be!
God or the Prophet cannot be depicted in human form, so this led to a sophisticated development of calligraphy, writing, mathematical design, and mosaic..... and we get incredibly beautiful buildings like this, devoted to the glory of all..... Plus the digit zero.
This Stone Cottage In England
This is Blaise Hamlet in Bristol. Family legend is that one of my distant relatives lived in one of the cottages when he worked on the Blaise estate. While you can't go into the cottages as they are residences, you can walk around the "village" (COVID permitting of course!) https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/blaise-hamlet
This. Is. Adorable. The very definition of cozy cottage... this is the kind of house i may imagine once housed a friendly old white witch who gave healing potions to her woodland friends
As someone living in England I can tell you there are TONS of cottages like this. It's really unremarkable architecture.
Urbany said that housing multiple generations of one's family under one roof was commonplace before the middle of the last century, but after WWII, single-family homes became more popular, spurred by the post-war boom and desire to achieve the American Dream.
"Today, people are living much longer which has created a so-called 'sandwich generation' that's both caring for young children and older parents. Therefore, the demand for housing with features that cater to multi-gen living is growing. According to the AIA survey, the most popular features include first-floor master suites, elevators, and laundry facilities on multiple levels, all of which can be found in Dixon Leasing's extensive portfolio."
Winter Has Come In Iceland. Hallgrímskirkja In Reykjavík. Photo By Gunnar Freyr
Cool! I've never been to Iceland but somehow this is exactly what I would've expected to see there.
Its beautiful there, you should definitely go if you get the chance. We went a few years ago rented a car and got to go where we wanted. They have a lot of waterfalls that are so serene and beautiful

Wasn't one of the buildings in Asgard (The Marvel cinematic universe) based on this building? Just in gold?
lol sorry, I consider it old, because no one knows what it is now days.... but it's funny how my parents were the same age as me when the first one came out... i conaider the series very old though.

"Azure Blue Pool" At Hearst Castel, San Simeon, California. It Was Built By Architect Julia Morgan Between 1919 And 1947
Fun fact-- It will cost you over $1,000 to swim here! But it is beautiful!

I hate eating by rivers or other watery areas... They always smell like dead things.
Thorncrown Chapel, Arkansas, By E. Fay Jones
My thoughts too. No disrespect to Arkansas at all, but I’d think this was in a Nordic country if I didn’t know better.
Load More Replies...Pretty neat definitely different combining new with old vaulted ceilings very narrow but it just has to fit in with nature which is a good thing
Weightlessness emerging from the ground. The shape also suggests the Ark during the flood.
Lastly, we should also keep in mind flexibility. For the most part, families and households are more diverse than ever, meaning one person's need for a formal dining room is another person's demand for a quiet office for their home-based business.
"Homes and layouts that can flexibly accommodate any number of residents, and better yet, evolve with those residents over time, are especially appealing," Urbany explained. "For architects, that can mean creating spaces that are easily divided or expanded with pocket or barn doors. Designers can aid flexibility by incorporating consistent themes and materials throughout."
We might not be colonizing Mars soon, but recent architectural trends are giving plenty of reasons to get excited about the future of construction.
Duomo Di Milano, Italy
That had to have taken a looong time to build. So intricate. Absolutely superb!
Started in 1386 if l now remember correctly and it is actually an ongoing project, that is, the building never stopped. I was born in Milano and visited the cathedral several times, it has treasures everywhere!
Load More Replies...The feeling of accomplishment by the artisans as the finishing touches were completed must have been overwhelming.
It took just over 5 centuries, much longer than most of the French and English gothic cathedrals.

Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral In France - Built Entirely Of Black Lava Stone
Please get the key from the mouth of the dragon
Load More Replies...That's what makes it awesome. A creepy church!
Load More Replies...We have many buildings that look like this but they were built from ordinary blond sandstone and due to the pollution from domestic and industrial chimneys they were covered in soot, as was all of the housing..
It's not the case, this cathedral (and most of the city) is built in volcanic stone from Volvic, a nearby town within the Department of Puy-de-Dôme. It reminds me to the church in Arucas, Gran Canaria, also in volcanic stone
Load More Replies...I want my funeral service to happen in this church. With candles, ominous latin dirges, and all their creepy classy catholic stuff.
It is "Volvic stone", it can be black or even grey. It looks more like limestone than obsidian which almost looks like glass.

I find this a bit overwhelming....too much. I like it's clean and sharp look but it's just too much!!!
I always wonder why churches need such high roofs. It must add so much to the cost and time of construction. Money that could be spent helping those who need it..
if i remember correctly from art history class a million years ago, the high ceilings served to make attendees look upwards to heaven and feel closer to whatever being they prayed to. the awe-inspiring heights were supposed to keep them humble and remind them of their insignificance.

This makes me uncomfortable, very overwhelming. Which I suppose is the point.
As weird as this is going to sound...just looking at it gave me a mini panic attack....I find it very unsettling and like you, overwhelming. I have incredible fear of height and this exacerbated that. It is way too sterile, also. I'm Catholic and I like art and colors and gold and glitz (ha!) but this is like something out of an animated movie and almost doesn't look real. When you find that it is, it compounds some of the weirdness and makes me very uncomfortable. Doubt I could visit this although I love traveling....just not my speed!

Very Narrow Corner House, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Sorry, going to spoil this a little for you all... The address of this house is Prinsengracht 154, and when you go there on street view, you'll see it's not actually as narrow when you approach it from a slightly different angle. Still, it's a triangular house, so must be difficult to furnish!

19th Century Italianate Orangery Of The Castle Ashby House, Northamptonshire, East Midlands, England
At prep school we took classes in an orangery. Basically a converted greenhouse
OED : "a glass building where orange trees are grown", hence the name!

all i really want is an 19th century Italianate orangery...is that too much to ask?

Load More Replies...I’m sorry to bring the mood down, but I think the churches building displays of wealth and grandeur are a far cry from the communities they are supposed to help. I trust people still worship there. Otherwise it is a memorial to the past

Les Espaces D'abraxas, Noisy-Le-Grand, France
That pretty much sums most people's reaction to the architecture of Ricardo Bofill... Amusingly, he came to hold a talk at the Architecture University of Bucharest once while I was still in school and we laughed when he started waxing poetic about how much he loved the Romanian Palace of Parliament (formerly the grand-and-utterly-tasteless palace belonging to our insane communist dictator, Nicolae Ceaușescu) because we thought he was joking - he was, in fact, dead serious.

I'd love to see a painting or sketch of the original to compare with how it was rebuilt.
Ornate indeed. It's a place where you would want to have a stein of german beer. German society wanted elaborately decorated steins made of silver, pewter or glass which were made in Bavaria, Koblenz and Koln. However, there was also great attention paid to the beautiful porcelain Ming mugs of China.
I’ve been there. The whole town square is made up of facades like this. It’s beautiful.

i'm going to assume that the technology to float a roof like that did not exist as such in 1899 (They had a lot of support structure in the crystal palace, mid 1800's). So I would hazard that this was originally an outdoor space that has been enclosed sometime in the last 50 years, similar to the v&a in england. still super pretty and wonderful, tho

Glad they didn't choose La Segrada, it's been done to death. Glad to see some other beautiful architecture other than the same old ones every time.
I agree with the LSF overexposure. But why this fascist neogothic abomination at the top of Tibidabo? Foster's neat tower is quite near and a much better choice.

How can it be A Queen Anne and Victorian style at the same time? Maybe just incorrectly captioned. Should perhaps read a Victorian mansion in the Queen Anne style
The 'Queen Anne' architectural style was created during the latter part of Queen Victoria's reign. The two terms are somewhat interchangeable.

Load More Replies...Looks great, but the weight of all the bricks bearing down, must make each glass brick incredibly strong.
Interestingly, glass itself is VERY strong. A solid glass brick is stronger in compression than a normal kiln-fired clay brick. It's also a lot more impact resistant. The only problem is, of course, the fact that glass is insanely expensive compared to regular bricks, so this must have cost a pretty penny... But then again, this is Hermes and used to be Chanel...

Sarcostyle Tower Proposal By Hayri Atak, New York City
My dad was in charge of the cleaning Department in my hometown, and my uncle worked for one of the biggest construction company in France. The architects will often forget the practical everyday-life aspects of a building, cleaning often doesn't come to their mind. There are beautiful buildings out there which cost hundred thousands to clean every year, needing special acrobatic cleaners - yes, that's a real job, very well paid - stopping the trafic for days and even scaffolding or cranes.
