We’ve heard about actors going an extra mile or a whole lunar distance to fit the role of their dreams. But what if their way to stardom requires taking “age is just a number” all too literally?
You see, it turns out that there’s not just one or two actors who have played characters far from their real age. From Gwyneth Paltrow to Amanda Seyfried, some of the cases you see below are truly mind-boggling. Remember Moaning Myrtle from the Harry Potter films? Allegedly, the actress Shirley was 37 years old at the time of filming, which made her the oldest actor to play a teenage student at Hogwarts. If you ask me, I see no reason why defying age shouldn’t count as a magic power.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster Was Actually 14 When He Played A 7-Year-Old Kid In Nanny Mcphee
He's a year and a half younger than Thor Bjornsson, who played the Mountain in GoT
Load More Replies...I've know 8 year olds who looked older than this 14 year old. Wonder if he had some sorr of condition growing up.
He was 13 when he played in Love Actually, while Keira Knightley was 18 at the time. So weird.
Why was that weird? She wasn't his love interest?
Load More Replies...He's so darn cute! Sorry, Thomas, but you're just an adorable human being - no matter what age so far.
I know righttttt! He does not age at all, hes 30 and looks like hes 19... I swear im obsessed with him gifytdrzyxucyivuygliuh just look at him <33 CYs-jKdWEA...aef28d.jpg
Dude could probably play a 7-year-old now. I've never seen another human being who looked so much younger than his age. He's going to look like a kid forever. When he's 70, he'll look like a first grader with wrinkles.
I suspect that child actors who look much younger and smaller than their real age are a hot commodity. They can remember lines and take direction far better than a child who really is that age.
He doesn’t age. He played a kid in game on thrones and was actually over 20
Laurence Fishburne Was Only 14 When He Played A Soldier In Apocalypse Now
Haha 14 years old play soldier, 30 years old play high school kid. Only in Hollywood
Wow - really? I never knew. But considering they send very young kids to Vietnam, it fits.
Yes, it makes sense that the director would want actors that actually looked like young, scared kids.
Load More Replies...Wouldn't have recognised him from this picture... in some other stills from the film he looks more like how we know him now.
His credit said Larry Fishburne. He was one of the first to die on the swift boat.
Shirley Henderson, Who Played Moaning Myrtle In The Harry Potter Films, Was Actually 37 When She Appeared In The Second Film
At 36, this makes me feel like I still have a tiny claim to some degree of youth, so thank you, I needed that!
She looks like an adult. Always found that scene kinda creepy
I did as well. As soon as she came on the screen I thought it was so weird. She doesn’t even look like a woman in her 20s let alone a teen or child. They must’ve cast her for her voice
Load More Replies...She’s great in Bridget Jones. In Harry Potter she’s unwatchable. Awful performance.
That's kind of the point of Moaning Myrtle though... she's like that in the books too.
Load More Replies...I suspect that her voice, unique and perfect for that character, had LOTS to do with her getting the role.
If you wonder why so many teenage roles are actually played by adult actors, there may be a good reason or two for this. First of all, according to child labor laws, kids can only work for up to a few hours at a time. Meanwhile, movie sets and TV productions will normally spend 10-12 hours a day working on a set.
There is also the issue of schooling that most minors are still required to complete. Plus, minors are more expensive to get insured if their job requires them to do stunts and physical work. Casting slightly older actors may be a workaround for not paying extra costs.
Moreover, the child actor can outgrow the age of their characters as their aging is more noticeable. Think of the ages 13 and 18 and how vast the difference is. And lastly, the great majority of professional actors are twenty and up, so they always already have greater experience and acting skills to compare with teenage and child actors.
Audrey Hepburn 32 In Breakfast At Tiffany’s As 18 Year Old
She was only supposed to be 18?! Suddenly her character makes much more sense...
I had no idea she was supposed to be 18, I thought she was supposed to be someone in their mix twenties. Shows what I know 😕
Me too! I thought she was world weary escort! I've never even thought of it before..I dunno how I feel about it!
Load More Replies...She was indeed a teenager in the book but the movie omitted her age. If they had mentioned it it would not have been believable. Audrey Hepburn looked great but she didn’t look 18. I think of the movie version as a different, older character. She was also blonde in the book.
Funny I never thought of her as 18 in BaT. I figured she was in her early 20's.
John Franklin, Children Of The Corn. The Role Of The 12-Year-Old Prophet In The Horror Movie Children Of The Corn Became A Debut For John Franklin. By That Time The Actor Had Already Turned 25
According to his biography, he was born with a medical condition that made him appear much smaller and younger than his age.
That kid...err man scared the c**p out of me when that movie came out in the theaters!!!
Lol. John is th s SWEETEST most gentle person in the world in real life. My brother used to be roommates with him years ago in L.A.

Winona Ryder Was 28 When She Played An 18-Year-Old In "Girl, Interrupted" As Susanna Kaysen
Win is a pixie though. It’s only now, in things like Stranger Things, that she’s finally started to look her real age.
Yeah she definitely looks older in stranger things. Beetlejuice was my favorite movie of hers. Although girl, interrupted was pretty great.
Load More Replies...Great movie... listen to "End of the World" by Skeeter Davis regularly... haunting song.
Have you heard the brown haired girls (can't think of her name) version of mad world? THAT is haunting. Love it.
Load More Replies...For many child actors who start out at a very early age, the sudden fame and intense work load may be debilitating. Macaulay Culkin, who started acting at the age of 4 and got famous for his role as Kevin McCallister in the Home Alone films, has said multiple times how truly hard it all was.
“It started feeling like a chore. I started vocalizing that and not being heard: I was saying, ‘I wanna go to school—I haven’t done a full year of school since first grade,'” he told Esquire in a recent interview.
Culkin’s lifelong struggle with psychological problems also serves as an example that casting a very young actor for a leading role which requires a lot of responsibility may be, in some way, harmful.
Amanda Seyfried Was 27 When She Played The Teenage Cosette In Les Misérables
I HAAAATE it when people do that; make someone "younger" than they are in movies.
Keiko Agena Played A 17-Year-Old Lane In Gilmore Girls While Being 27-Years-Old
She was. Some old to young castings actually work. This is on of them.

they all looked old. when I was a kid i thought that was a university they were all at
Well. My mom looked like a thirty-something when she was only 14-15 years old. It's the head scarfs and shoes and glasses. They can make a baby look like a senior citizen.
John Travolta was 24, Stockard Channing 34, Jeff Conaway 28, Jamie Donnelly 33, Michael Tucci 32. Grease is one of my top 10 favorite movies.
Jack Gleeson, 25, As King Joffrey In Got, 17. In The Books He Was Only 13-Years-Old
Amazing job acting like a psycho. Couldn't wait for that character to die LOL
He was Gordon's son in The Dark Night and the boy in Race To Witch Mountain with Dwayne Johnson.
Load More Replies...Actually JG is still only 28. When GoT started he was 18/19. It’s not that bad.
13 years old. No hyphens needed. Unless you also write "he was sitting-on-the-throne" or "while wearing-a-crown".
That's EXACTLY how I write them. 13-years-old-it-is!! Thanks, Grammar-Nazi!

Keanu Reeves, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. He Played A 17-Year-Old Schoolboy At The Age Of 25 In The Sci-Fi Comedy Of 1989
Let's be honest. We all know Keanu has a hidden picture of him that ages. Or he's a vampire. And one of the loveliest and kindest people in show biz

Sophie Mcshera Plays The Young Kitchen Maid Daisy In "Downton Abbey" While Being 35-Years-Old
It's not true. She was 25-30 when she played Daisy.
Load More Replies...I remember my mom and my aunts all getting together to watch this and drink wine. They were so bummed when it ended
She played Daisy from 2010 to 2015. She was born in 1985, that makes her 25-30 at that time. She still looked much younger than her age as Daisy, but don't spread fake info.
I would never have guessed she was 35. She looks at least 10 years younger.
That's because she was. She was 25 when she started playing Daisy, so this is misinformation.

Cole Sprouse Is 27 Years Old, But His "Riverdale" Character Jughead Is Meant To Be Just 16
every teenagers are much older in tv. in that 70's show the only one who was actually a realistic age was mila kunis. all the other were past their 20's
And you can actually tell when she turned 18 in real life because the show took that license to put her in a lot more revealing outfits. Legitimately, that is the reason they avoided it before then because she was not yet 18 when they started the show. Gotta ask. who was your favorite character in that show? Mine wound up being a 3-way tie between Kelso, Hyde, and Red
Load More Replies...Growing up as an teenager I always wondered why the actors and actresses in teen dramas never looked like nerdy and frizzy haired me or my friends. They had perfect skin and somehow looked like they were 16 going on 30. Whelp, now I know why.
No one in Riverdale is really a teenager, not just Cole. They are all much much older and it shows.
If they were actually younger, it would be much more horrifying that they are so sexualized.
Load More Replies...Probably because there are sex scenes in riverdale and they cant use an actor whose a minor. I could be wrong though lol
It's very common to see this. Riverdale is a perversion of the comic books, that's for sure.
They never looked 16 (or like high school students) in the comic book
It’s because of the sex scenes and also to get around child labour laws. You have a teenager play the part and they’re limited to how much work they can do per day.
A recent Bored Panda thread was about how much older people looked in the past. These are just examples.

Leonardo Dicaprio - 28 In Catch Me If You Can As Frank Abignale Jr. - 16

Actually didn't feel that disconnected with the character. I think maybe it's because GOT didn't really concentrate on age. The only person we paid attention to was Ayra
True, and that got really weird when she still look 10 but was having sex.

Load More Replies...Emma Thompson Starred As 19-Year-Old Elinor Dashwood In "Sense And Sensibility" When She Was 35
Elinor was almost past the marrying age as per Victorian standards and she was pretty much regarded as a spinster. Having an older actress portray her helps convey the idea. But apart from that, Emma Thompson is phenomenal in this movie. I love the whole cast but she just shines.
She is not supposed to be 19 in the movie. There is a difference between the book and the interpretation in the film.
That’s what I thought as well. In the movie, in seemed like she was supposed to be at least mid-20’s; thoroughly an old maid for that time period.
Load More Replies...IIrc, she herself was wary of playing Elinor because of her age, but was persuaded to play her since she also wrote the script and would know how to portray "her" Elinor.
She was supposed to be 19? I thought at least a 25 year-old spinster.

As w/ Roberto Benigni doing Pinnochio, I suspect that no one was fooled here, but also that no one involved in the casting decisions actually thought that anyone was being fooled.
Christian Navarro In "13 Reasons Why". While His Character Is Supposed To Be 18, Navarro Is 28
I have always wondered how old he was! Because he actually looks way too old for the part
All the teenagers in "13 Reasons Why" were played by 20-something actors. Ross Butler (Zach Dempsey in the series) turned 30 this year. Great show though
Sasha Pieterse, Who Played 15-Year-Old Alison, Was 12 When The Pilot For Pretty Little Liars Began Shooting
She looks much older than 12. To me, 12 years old are still children.
Damn, I would've seemed too young to portray a 15 year old when I was in my late 20s; in my late 20s Hollywood would've had me portray 11 year olds.
Amy Poehler Was Only 33 When She Played The Mom Of A High School Junior In Mean Girls
Nicole Kidman, Flirting. The Actress Was Pretty Far From School Aged. At The Time Of Filming, In 1991, She Had Just Turned 24 Years Old
And to be fair - in most of the cases you SEE that the actor is way too old.
Also I think for some of the adaptations involved they are leaving the age ambiguous/staying silent on it, even though in the source material it was specified as some age younger than the actor or actress. In Romeo & Juliet, the text says that Juliet is 'in her 13th year.' In A Clockwork Orange, when Alex (the protagonist) has sex w/ the two girls (and they play the superfast William Tell Overture), in the book he's 16, the girls are middle schoolers, and he gets them really drunk and rapes them. In American Psycho, when Bateman picks up a prostitute in his limo (and then tortures her to death), it's supposed to be a 15 year old prostitute. The woman in the movie version playing that prostitute was clearly at least in her 20s. But yeah, you can see why Hollywood has to change some of this stuff.

Most people simply look about the same between their late teens and early 30ies. A bit more baby fat in the face and brighter looking eyes for the younger age range is often the only noticeable difference. And makeup can do a lot to compensate that.
well. in most "highschool" dramas the actors are waaay older then the roles they play.
