If you haven't heard about the legendary Woodstock, believe me, you've missed a lot. In 1969 a music festival, organized by a bunch of 20-year-olds, took place in Bethel, New York in a cow pasture owned by a farmer Max Yasgur. The organizers had anticipated for the crowd to be around 200.000 people, but the lineup of the most iconic bands of the time such as Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Joe Cocker have more than doubled the number of attendees to around 500.000. The Woodstock festival ran out of food the first day, the traffic was like hell, drugs were flowing free, and still, there were no violent incidents registered. All in all, it was the most iconic and the most peaceful music festival ever.
The legendary festival with it's half a million attendees illustrates the era perfectly — the groovy vibes, peaceful mindset, and of course, the 60s fashion. This time, hippie girls are what we will cover in our Woodstock pictures compilation.
The key details in the hippie fashion were free and flowy dresses, knee boots, anything native American themed, Indian patterns and everything that associated with being open and peaceful, often showing quite a lot of skin. After all, the hippie movement declared free love for all!

I find these photographs most wonderful. I must comment though about the comment concerning weight.--I happen to be an ectomorph and as Grace Jones would say very aerodynamic in design. I have very little body fat. Not all of us thin folk are anorexic. Three years ago I purchased a car after not having one for 40 years and used my bike, public transportation or walked to and fro to work--ten miles round trip. So at 60 years of age I have retained my very lean body. Sorry but the comment concerning weight and drugs hit a nerve. We all have different body types--embrace them.
Walk down any street today and you won't see hardly anyone dressed like this. If this is the origin of todays fashion, I'm living in another universe.
Load More Replies...Considering the chaotic mess the rain caused,it just brought the people who were lucky enough to have gone that much closer, they banded together and helped one another anyway they could. It was a time of true brotherly and sisterly love and peace ✌ A time when you could really express yourself and just truly be yourself without fear of judgment. Wish I could've been there. But as the saying goes "If you can remember being there, then you weren't really there"🤪💃🎸🏳️🌈🥂🕊☮
Today's fashion is not anything like this, so this is not the origin of it. Todays fashion is T-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts and a baseball cap. Or its tight fitting everything that does nothing but show off all your unsightly bulges. Hippie garb OTOH has not aged all that well in the minds of most people. These people in the pics look great, but you have emphasized the sexy, free spirited angle when in reality, hippie culture and dress was a lot easier for ordinary people to accept without that. This fashion beats what we've come to accept as "fashion" today, but only when its not flaunted as "sexier", or "more peaceful" or more creative. This is basically what you've done. Strip it of its excesses which invariably attract the attention whores, and cater to everyone of all shapes and sizes. Popular fashion is not just for "beautiful people" with time and money to dress up. Its for everybody.
This, is my deceased sister-in-law (though they were never married, she was family like that). Sandy Martinez.

Wow - it was the Free kids in the movie Woodstock in 1970 that inspired me to start a family! I wanted to raise a hippie kid!! Nowadays social services would be all over this - charging multiple families with neglect, child endangerment, etc etc !!!

When it was normal for artists to act like a human being and chill with their fellow humans.
It is still normal. You gotta look outside the mainstream scene, though...
Load More Replies...I would have loved to seen Janis perform. She died 2 years after I was born. I believe she was a great influence, maybe the greatest, on women garnering respect as musicians. Before her, and I don't mean disrespect, we had sweet singers who were good girls that adhered to the absolute role of females who get married and stay home to have children like Doris Day, Janis proved that women could rock out as much if not more than men.
I've been wearing the Janis look for 45 years now. I've got the long hair, big sunglasses, the beads, and several tie dyes. I love 'em. My friends tell me Janis reminds them of me!

I had a pair of those lace up boots in grade school! And yes, it probably was about 1969. Psychedelic flowers and tie dyes were common, choker necklaces, and fringe on everything. Good times!
It was the biggest genius rock concert ever and nothing has compared to it through the years and I was just turning into an adult and expanding my drug base and it was awesome and drugs that were pretty much safe and to this day I have no intention of doing any more drugs and yes I walked away without getting addicted to anything and this concert made me a man that weekend and I was a virgin until I went to the rock concert and sex and drugs were shared with all who wanted to try new experiences and I was one but imagine actually helping others with food and anything else you would need to survive

Hippie Couple Standing Barefoot On A Road Holding A Bundle & Wine Bottle At Woodstock
No. the girl on the left holding the bottle is Jeannie Rogers (now Whitworth). She said the guy on the right whom she didn't know offered to hold her belongings for her. What you see there is all that she brought with her. Jeannie and her friend Dottie got a jobs having come early with Woodstock Ventures and Food For Love. She has authored a couple of books about her adventures. Good reading!

superb!i'm just wandered how old is that kid today,is he still a watermelon amateur and is he even remember that part of his life ?.......
Judging by his height I would guess him to be about 2 years old in the photo. If he survived Woodstock I would guesstimate him to be about 49 years old.
Load More Replies...What exactly is going on here? The distance from her heel to her knee is the same as that of her shoulder to the top of her head. The proportions of her head to her body are those of a kid (albeit a kid with a crazy-long neck), not old enough to be the boy's mom. Someone else's head? But how, and why?
She probably is a kid. The toddler’s older sister perhaps

I've read some not all of the harsh rude comments. These people who have commented on her body and not her meaning are the ones that didn't deserve to live in our time of life. It's somehow our fault you are how you are. I don't get it. Guess we should have beat you like our parents did too us.
HOWEVER!!!! I WAS THERE!!!!! and there was MORE PEACE in 3 days than there has been in ALL THE YEARS PUT TOGETHER SINCE!!!
I've read some not all of the rude comments. If you are seeing her body in a negative way and not sensing the kindness and love that was so great in those days then I know why this generation is domed.... No soul.
It's the same woman as earlier - the "fairy" - only without her hairy friend.
Crochet tops have a comeback complete with fringe! Totally groovy. LOL

Well, by the look of the boys un thé back, i don't think it's in 1969...
Less than 5% of boys had shoulder length hair in 1969. You could still get beaten up by your local greasers if you had it, except in the hippest neighborhoods. It became more mainstream around mid 1970. And styrofoam was patented in the 1940s. What's special about these pics is the variety of looks ppl sported. Today it's all about conformity - everyone dresses the same and there's little variation in popular music, just a handful of genres with sound-alike beats and vocals. Everyone and their grandma has pink hair, tats and nose rings these days - items once daring, now just emblems of conformity for sheeple following the herd. There were no Gaps or Marshalls back then. Ppl shopped in small boutiques stocked with whatever cool clothing was available locally. Levis and Wranglers and Lees were the only common items - the only jeans available at the time. Which some folks customized with patches or embroidery. It was all about expressing freedom and individuality.
I’ve seen this photo a few times, and it always makes me wonder if the woman depicted is Miss Lucy from the GTOs: Miss_Lucy.jpg
The two guys in the back are from 2016 - but they tolk a trip back to 1969...
Yeh - I believe it's 1969. Women were always more ahead in fashion (& I say that from a 1969 sexist point of view!! ) Most of the boys I knew (growing up outside Boston) had shorter hair b4 1970 & on. Whether it was strict school dress codes (archaic!) or just coming back from 'Nam, the long hair in '69 was found on those who had immersed in counterculture for some time. Or had been outa school awhile. It takes awhile for guys short hair to grow out! And as Terry W. said - he was there! Took the pic, dammit! :-) Man oh man, I had hip huggers just like that, and a big leather belt, different buckle. Memories . . . doesn't seem that long ago. I was living in Harvard Sq at the time - Boston & Cambridge emptied out that weekend.....I was only 17, on to a Sr in HS, & my mom wouldn't let me go by myself - ha hahaha Such a good girl! If only I had know! I definitely woulda run away!
American Singer/ Songwriter Grace Slick With Psychedelic Rock Group Jefferson Airplane
She surely looked stunning, but she said that buying a white dress for Woodstock was a big regret…
Wow! I had no idea Grace Slick was so beautiful! I gather I’ve never seen a good photo of her before now?

Back then I'd see such a rear view of what eemed a sexy woman, but from the front they were an ugly dude with a moustache.
Woodstock Women Fashion
I love how she is rocking out in a peasant dress and matronly shoes. Women in the 1960s sure knew how to dispel fashion deviations. By this I mean she looks like she is ready to go to tea but she isn't going to tea, she is jamming to Grace Slick or Janis Joplin or any other myriad of singers and bands at Woodstock.

A Naked Young Woman Stands Up Amidst The Crowd During The Woodstock Festival
Wow, she is standing there naked as a free bird and not a single person is trying to s**t shame her or grope her.
It looks like she just stood up, everyone looks like they are just trying to realize what exactly is going on. I'm SURE lots of rapes and gropes happened every other minute at that event.
Load More Replies...Raped and gropes were not happening during this even it was all about free love and drugs. I can't recall not one single fight. Not one single rape. Not one single theft. Not any acts of violence or vandalism. People were helping each other, sharing food and drinks. Sharing bedding and clothes. Man! People now REALLY don't have a clue what it was like to live then and how so long as you stayed away from most of the grown ups you had a good life.

Is it sad that the first thing I noticed was how thin everyone was back then, and today people are on average about 50lbs heavier?
- What are you wearing sweetie? - Something much more modest than you did in my age, grandma.
There is so much more going on in these photos than just women's clothing....... so much information about the youth culture back then, what people were sharing and exploring, and discovering. That was quite a time. Much thanks to Mr. Yasgur who hosted the concert on his land.
People who aren't from the Woodstock era will never understand & should stop with the ignorant comments. Please.
noticed one major thing did not see one girl tatted up, and many of girls hair and clothing not much different from today. and they look cleaner tan i would expect although at the end everyone was mud caked
I got there early and staked a seat near the stage. I wore wide (elephant) bell bottoms and a halter top. The harshest memory was being so thirsty. When the brought in a fire truck with water we had nothing to hold it, so we scrounged through garbage cans looking for anything to hold water. Wish I had saved the tickets I payed for.
