Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce This one hits close to home because it happened between my parents. We had a family “friend” who was a lawyer and my parents agreed that he would be the lawyer for both of them as a mediator. So, as the assets were being divided my dad got absolutely slammed. She was going to get the house, cars, half his retirement, and an insane amount of alimony. To the tune of like $2,500 a month for the rest of her life. My dad has a good job as a municipal employee, but that was probably 70%ish of his paycheck. Turns out that my mom and the “family friend” actually conspired to rip my dad off and make it seem like that’s what a divorce settlement looks like. And she was going kick back more money under the table after the dust had settled. Dad just didn’t know how these things worked. So, after some convincing he finally went out and got his own lawyer. He got a very fair divorce settlement after that. Mom still to this day can’t understand why we don’t talk to her much.

I did. My ex husband and I, very amicably, divorced and used the same lawyer. We evenly divided everything, so that our sons wouldn't go without. Our sons never saw a courtroom, they never had to "choose"; we made everything as easy and smooth as possible for them. My husband and ex husband have a close friendship (I call it a "bromance" lol) and we're all involved with everything they do, together. Definitely not the norm, but it worked for us

None of any of this is funny or great. Bored Panda, you can do better. Family court is replete with unethical attorneys repping sick people who they assist to harm the other spouse. Kids given the worst of it. Take it from me, I divorced Alex Jones (left abuse, pls spare me the comments), he sued me for 8 yrs, I spent every cent of the .04 percent I got, kids denied medical care for things later treated 5 wks at children’s hospital. My child is about to be 18 & is at a sophomore level, Alex pulled her from school, the whole time he’s severely abusive & his wife is on her 2nd DUI, attacking him & my child. My mum didn't go to that extent but I feel so bad for my dad because mum gave the real estate agent who was valuing the house before settlement a sob story so the value of the house was set lower than it should have been. Mum paid dad half of that value (about $300 000) at settlement and kept the house. Fifteen years later she sold the house for $1.33 million.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce I read about a case where the wife was trying to take half of a guys business and millions in personal assets, only to find out that the business had been moved into his sons name years earlier, and the guy donated all their savings, millions of dollars, to a childrens hospital in his soon to be ex-wife's name so she couldn't get the money. The judge said what he did was technically legal since it was community property and no freeze had been placed on it yet, but was morally unconscionable. Lawyer said in his entire life he never saw a bigger smile on a mans face. He just kept saying "I just wanted to help the children" and smiling.

Sounds like an excellent example of "cutting of your nose to spite your face". He gave away his own saving just to f**k over his wife, but at least the children's hospital benefitted from his assholery.

Add me to the list of people who think that a spouse does not inherently deserve (nor should receive) half of a marriage partner's business/assets/property simply due to being married to them.

First of all, if your spouse doesn't deserve an equal share of assets, why are you getting married to them? If you don't want to share your assets, don't marry/live in a community property state. Get a prenup. Or don't get married at all, since sharing is part of the concept of marriage.

According to the Institute for Family Studies, the divorce rate in America has been falling fast in recent years, hitting a record low in 2019. It seems that for every 1,000 marriages, only 14.9 ended in divorce: “This is the lowest rate we have seen in 50 years.”

Since more people are staying together, marriages are getting longer. The researchers found that the average duration of current marriages in the U.S. “has increased almost one year in the recent decade, from 19 years in 2010 to 19.8 years in 2019.”

Even though there are headlines blaring that COVID-19 has had a huge toll on people’s relationships, the drop in the divorce rate is likely to continue. In fact, research shows that the pandemic has actually brought some couples closer to each other.

I was with my (adult) cousin for moral support as my (soon-to-be-ex) aunt tried to cajole her into sabotaging my uncle in their divorce. My cousin very succinctly told her mom that while she may be divorcing the man she resents and even detests, it is still her father and she loves him and will always be close to him. To which her mom told her she needed to be on her side as a woman. My cousin told her she was putting her in a position to choose one of them & since she had no choice but to choose, she was choosing decency and integrity. That was nearly five years ago and she’s only spoken to her mother a handful of times since. She sees her dad weekly. I always wonder if parents who use their children as pawns in divorce regret the damage they cause.

I've said it plenty of times. You should have to have to pass a class or get training before becoming a parent. Not that it would have helped in this case, but it does demonstrate that just because you can, doesn't mean you should have children.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce I once had a boss whose wife grabbed all the belongings from the house she felt entitled to while her husband was gone. Well, when he returned, every knob and handle was gone, too — doorknobs, cabinet handles, drawer handles, anything used to open something. My POS ex did this. But not knobs. He literally cut the chords to every electronic in the house. Mind you I had small kids at the time. So no tv or dvd or anything for them. (not shared kids). He also took pillows, left the pillow cases. Took my favorite blanket just to be an ass. Stole my car, cut off my power, water and tried the car insurance. Told the cell phone company my phone was stolen even though I proved I paid for the phones (his included) and bills from my account. and a host of other stupid s**t. Long story short, I won in the end and he looked like a complete ass. Also, he's in jail as I type this because he never amounted to anything after I left. But I digress. Karma is a b***h.

Data from the American Family Survey reveals that a majority of wedded Americans say that “the pandemic has made them appreciate their spouse more and half agree that their commitment to marriage has deepened.”

However, while some choose to stay in a marriage for the long haul, others decide that splitting up is the healthier alternative. Maybe your partner left you for another person. Perhaps your relationship is not what you thought it would be. Or maybe your partnership has been in dire straits for years, but only now reached the end of the road.

There can be endless reasons why a marriage fails, but there’s no denying that it hurts. This can lead to at least one partner, or maybe even both, acting completely irrational and engaging in petty behaviors. And even though it’s tempting to take cheap shots at your ex, it can come back to bite you in the future.

I told him not to leave, just move to a different bedroom for the time being because once he was out the chances of him ever getting back in were slim. He texted his wife and told her he was staying in the house. She called back and left a VM that she wanted him out and if he wasn't out soon, she would start taking out her unhappiness on the children, and would remind the children that mommy was being mean to them because daddy wouldn't leave.

Katie Crow, family law and divorce attorney, wrote that during the time of your divorce, every single thing you do is in the spotlight. “Emotions are running wild, and both of you are completely hurt and vulnerable, and it is important to try and keep a level head during the divorce.”

It’s no secret that divorces can be emotionally and financially difficult, but you have to stay calm and see your actions from different perspectives. Even seemingly small or innocent deeds can get twisted in the eyes of your partner, leading to a huge and long argument for everyone to see.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce I work for a divorce attorney, and the craziest divorce I saw was when the husband — who had left the home — returned while his wife was at work to not only remove his clothing and belongings, but to Gorilla glue her things together! He glued the TV remote to the table, the phone to its cradle, the couch pillows to the couch, and he even glued the vacuum cleaner to the carpet. She called the police to report property damage, and for days afterward, she continued discovering random things glued together, including her oven mitts, which were glued to the wall, and all of her sheets in the linen closet, which were glued together.

How is it that at one time time people pledge a loving commitment together...forever...and later do hateful, selfish things to each other? Swans mate for life. Snowgeese mate for life. Cardinals mate for life. Are human beings less ethical than birds?

Birds don't stay together out of good ethics. Humans are not birds. Many animals are not monogamous. People can be petty.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce I read about a top executive at a Fortune 500 company who was caught in a nasty divorce. He was set up for life with a bunch of stock, houses, and assets in many places, and the wife wanted everything she could possible get. Well, the husband proposed that if his wife let him keep everything, he'd give her half of his paycheck for the rest of his life... She quickly agreed because his checks were huge, and he received millions of dollars in bonuses. Well, as soon as the paperwork was finalized, he quit his job and started to work part-time at a sporting goods store! He would still drive to work in his expensive car and was still set for life. But every Friday, he loved knowing that his ex-wife would only be getting about $150 per check.

A lot of very rich people are officially working for a minimum wage to dodge taxes. The rest of their income are bonusses, travel expenses, counseling fees, attendance premiums and a share in the profits.

I read where one takes his whole "salary" in stock, everything he purchases he does on "options" no cash involved. His reasoning... he does not have to spend a dime on tax's. Then he becomes a smart ass and sells some stock and pays a tiny bit While making a big joke out of it. He is one of the many people I would love to see begging on a street corner.

I don't like the tone of these posts which list the man as having ownership of everything, and the women wanting half, like it's wrong. When you are married to someone and have a family, it's usually the woman that bears children and raises them and takes care of a lot of the household and bills and day to day needs of the family. This is what enables a man to build a business and spend all those extra hours climbing the ladder, amassing assets. Women frequently give up their careers completely to support the family, or else take a break or take much lesser incomes. So everything that has been amassed during the marriage is rightly considered as belonging to both partners. I don't like the message that women are gold-diggers for wanting their legally-entitled share of marital wealth.

I used to be a domestic law attorney (thank the lord that’s over), and I can promise you this s**t wouldn’t fly in my state. A person can not “purposely impoverish” themselves to avoid financial responsibilities. Sadly, I saw it all the time and judges would FLIP when the case was ultimately brought back to court.

“Don’t fool yourself by saying ‘they would never say that about me’ or ‘they would never do that to me’ because I have seen too many people get hurt under that false assumption,” she said. “Divorce can bring out a completely different breed of character from the person you thought you have known for years. It may even bring out a new side in yourself that could get you into trouble.”

Crow recommends monitoring your actions and behavior to make sure that your feelings do not get the better of you. She provides a couple of examples: “Bad-mouthing your ex to your kids, getting a DUI, and having promiscuous relationships.” Acting out at the moment can end up hurting you in the long run. Not to mention that it can even cause bigger issues outside of your divorce.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce The couple was divorcing on mutual terms, and the wife had one child with this husband and one from a previous marriage. Well, the husband agreed to pay child support for both children even though he wasn't obligated to... The judge signed the order, they set up the child support account, and it got kicked back, saying they couldn't have two accounts for the same child. Well, it turns out, the wife had been collecting child support from the biological father the entire time they were married, and she never told her husband! So, she basically tried to milk two fathers for one child!

I'm glad she was found out, but there is nothing preventing having more than one account per child. What if child is in foster care, or with a grandparent as custodian? Both parents are still responsible for supporting their child, so 2 separate accounts.

…it’s not about bank accounts. It’s a child “account” with the state. Meaning the state already had a record of paying the wife for this child from the kids biological father so another payment cannot be set up.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce I represented a guy who was on his second marriage. His first wife had passed away from cancer. Well, while divorcing his second wife, he met a very kind, affectionate woman, they hit it off, and they became basically engaged... Well, the fiancé was later diagnosed with terminal cancer, and when the wife found out, she accused him — in court — of killing his first wife by 'giving' her cancer and trying to do the same thing to his fiancé! I wish I had an artist's rendering of the scene, capturing the crazy look in the wife's eyes, her attorney's look of shame and embarrassment, and the judge's look of plain confusion.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce Child of traumatic divorce here. There’s so many and I mean SO many things I could post on this thread about how f**king terrible my parents were to each other, but this takes the cake. My parents were separated, in the process of divorcing, and had split custody between my brother and I (we were 5 and 7 at the time). My dad didn’t have his own place yet so when it was his turn to be with us he came back to our house (the one he purchased mind you) and my mom was supposed to leave. One weekend they were arguing over something and it got so bad that my mom wouldn’t leave and told my dad she would call the police (something she apparently did a lot to get her way, which after growing up with her I can attest she did this a lot unnecessarily to control us). So she left, called the police, told them my father was dangerous and had a gun (my dad was in the army and we had plenty guns, locked in a safe of course). Of course the police were just doing their job, and took my mom at face value. It went so fast from my brother and I watching tv with my dad to the police knocking at our door, my dad opening the door and getting pepper sprayed without the cops saying anything, and then my dad locked the door and the cops couldn’t bust it down, so they came around back and broke our sliding glass door in so they could arrest my dad in our front yard with all our neighbors watching. I didn’t really understand what was happening at the time but it was traumatizing for sure. Then my mom tried to get full custody of us in their actual divorce, and thank god the judge ruled for split custody. My whole childhood was s**tty honestly bc all they did was explain very deep and emotionally complex situations to very young children who just wanted their parents to love each other. But yeah, I’ve never quite forgiven my mom for that one.

In USA, it's called "domestic violence". After decades of believing men rather than women, we started believing women and arresting men. There are still manipulative women who abuse the law. My son's girlfriend knew that "choking" is an automatic DV arrest, so when she got drunk and they argued and she stumbled and he held her up against the wall so she wouldn't fall, she told the cops he tried to choke her and they hauled him off to jail. His parole was violated; she knew her lie would send him to jail. I met her and I totally believe his version.

My Ex had 8 boyfriends (two became husbands) over 6 years and doing coke and partying... I had an honest life, working for the gov't... no girlfriend... but guess who is the villain. She got the kids... because there is no one like mommy!! My kids grew up to hate her... but no way to do anything about it because... did you ever go to court and see those posters with mommy holding her tearful child that says "Children... they're worth every penny!" WOW! I, with great fight and life and limb, got custody of all 4... so yeah... then... A single dad of 4... no one cuts ME any breaks because "I should MAN up!" Well, I did... and she's still out in left field somewhere... but in the womanverse... I'm still a d**k. OUCH!

Plus, you need to stay levelheaded not only because of your own actions but also to notice the possible traps set up to provoke you by your ex. “You may be the best parent in the world and have written a top-selling parenting book, but it only takes one wrong move to disintegrate your parental reputation.”

“So it is best to play it safe and know that your life will soon find a “new normal”, but now is the time to just get through your divorce with your head held high,” Crow suggested.

Even after they'd decided on everything else, they spent an additional $100,000 fighting over this ashtray... Well, after a court hearing, the wife finally won the ashtray, and she promptly strode out to the white courthouse steps and smashed it, leaving the pieces for the husband to see on his way out.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce My sister and her ex-husband had agreed in arbitration that he would keep the house and car and that she would keep the furniture and electronics. My dad and I rented a Uhaul to help her go get her stuff. We figured the amount of stuff she would get would be enough to get about $10-15K off Craigslist. We arrived at the house to find only an Ikea futon, a smaller TV than they had, an old iMac, and all the outdoor furniture destroyed. We were so devastated for her. She decided she wanted to close that venomous chapter of her life so she just took her losses rather than fight for stupid possessions. Happy ending... She finished optometry school and became an optometrist, found a great husband, and is raising two awesome kids.

Would have cost her more to fight for the furniture than it was worth. It’s a shame people do this. Happened to me. I resigned to the fact that I’d never get anything that was owed to me and figured it’s the cost of moving on quicker. Anything I ended up with was a bonus. Just had to emotionally distance myself from what was happening but it was still hard

The two man there made fake news about divorced family, who split their house in half and everywhere there was a line, and on one side there was a wife and on the other the husband, and husband got the poilet in the bathroom, while the wife get a better view on TV i nthe living room... and they said they going to split their kids and there was a sound of chainsaw in the background :D :D

FYI - there are other ways to get drug tested. Most hair testing is done to collect DNA to match crime scene DNA, not so much drug testing, though hair is an excellent indicator of long term drug use

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce I was an assistant at a family law practice, and in one divorce case we had, the wife had started dating someone new who was severely allergic to cats. Well, her ex-husband bought a cat for their kids — knowing that he wasn't allowed to have pets in his apartment — so that his ex-wife would have to keep it at her house. The wife called us, saying that the kids were distraught she didn't want to keep it, and that her ex-husband told the kids that if their mom loved them, she would keep the cat.

My Ex did something similar, knowing full well that the place I lived in had a zero cat/dog pets policy, even people that owned their places weren’t allowed to have them. He bought the kids a kitten & gave it to them at his place, they come home with it & I tell him they can’t keep it, he knows they can’t have it & im not willing to get evicted over a cat, so I made him take it back. It took me a few weeks before the kids understood why but as usual I had to be the bad guy.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce Friend was going through divorce from insane husband. He had been texting her pics of the gun he bought and threatening her. Police were called. Nothing they could do because it was 'only a picture'. He was staying with a secret girlfriend at this point. She allowed him to go get his stuff from the house. She was scared to go back in the house alone. I went with her. First red flag was he had changed the locks. So we waited for locksmith to open the house and change the locks again. Well, when the door opens...we noticed all of the furniture was gone. So we carefully went upstairs in search of her cats. The entire second floor was empty. No cats. No furniture. Even her clothes were gone. Come to find out he hired a moving company to pack and take everything, even the food in the fridge. Finally found the cats. He had taken them to another vet in town and put them up for boarding under his sister's name thinking she would not be able to find them. He was finally forced to disclose what happened to her possessions. He had them taken to a storage unit far away from the home.

I would be distraught, too, and my fish only cost a few bucks. Goldfish are social creatures, very friendly and relatively smart. They're also domesticated, meaning they're more affectionate toward humans than wild carp. I don't see how willfully killing someone's pet can even be legal. I hope he was charged.

She also said that his Indian flatmates were inherently “dirty”. After the obviously false child molestation suggestion I warned her of the consequences of being caught lying about that (i.e. permanent loss of custody). She fired me but kept calling back using fake names to try and obtain free advice which contradicted my advice, but everyone she called immediately spotted her. This was a long time ago and now I specialise in insurance litigation, which is far less ugly.

My uncle's ex wife accused him of the same thing. And despite the doctor saying it really didn't look like the kid ( age 4 at the time) had been molested the judge believed her. He spent a total 14 years of a 30 year sentence. His kid turned 16 and went to the police. Then it took Duke University legal team years to get him out even with his son saying his mom had made him lie about it all these years. Our justice system is F*CKED.

Not everyone works to prevent pregnancy, and even some who do become parents. Abortion isn't legal everywhere, hence unwanted children. And lots of folks don't realize how expensive and time-consuming it can be so they want to foist the responsibility on the other.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce I worked on a divorce in which the wife waited for her husband to leave the house on a business trip, then came to the house, turned on all of the faucets, plugged the drains, turned off the furnace, and left. It was -10 degrees. When the husband came back five days later, the house was ruined, and the water froze and cracked the foundation.

He brought two buckets of unsorted coins (mostly pennies) to our office. She took the light bulbs out of every fixture when she moved out, then refused to give him right of first refusal if she wanted to get rid of their dog. She spent a year and a half systematically destroying their business and then expected him to pay her hundreds of thousands of dollars for her share of the (now worthless) business.

He was sleeping with a married woman, and ultimately the husband found out she was having an affair. Really ugly divorce ensues, during which they fought over a lot of assets, but the real point of contention was their dog, lovely GSD named Orion. Eventually, husband gets custody of the dog, and in under a month, has the dog put down, just to hurt her back for the affair.

I used to run a storage facility. I once ended up in the unenviable position of having a husband and wife in a bitter divorce both rent units from me. I gave them units in different areas so they wouldn't run into each other. I put notes on their account so my staff wouldn't say anything by mistake. The last battle in their divorce was for the dog. Long story short, I ended up making a call about a really bad smell that I thought might be gas. The services came and it turned out to be coming from a unit, the one the husband had recently moved out of. In it was a large heavy duty plastic bag. In that bag was half a dog.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce Not a divorce lawyer but remember this from another Reddit. husband and wife getting divorced. There was a classic car Ferrari, jaguar or something like that that was worth a lot of money. It was a bone of contention in the divorce. After several months the husband finally proposes that he will let her have the car if she gives him the house. She agrees. Come to find out he had been taking the car out everyday and doing loops around the city for hours putting thousands of miles on it making it worth nothing.

I'm not convinced....just putting a few thousand miles on the clock isn't going to devalue a high end car to zero ....Even if you drove for 200 miles every day for a whole year, which I very much doubt(no one has that amount of spare time) it's only 70 odd thousand....so no,not for me

Don't get why you are downvoted, mileage is not a very important factor in the value of a classic car. Being undamaged, unmodified and original are more important.

A real classic car never becomes worth nothing. Even if he had managed to put 100 000 miles on it in a year, the car would still be worth a considerable amount of money.

Mileage is a significant factor, particularly if it's not a very popular classic, or if the mileage was exceptionally low. Still, there's no way it was "worth nothing," but I wonder how many miles he managed to put on.

Most of the replies here are speculation. It really depends on the car. Low miles and matching numbers do add considerable value to a car. Another factor not mentioned is maintenance. If he add sufficient miles without any servicing, then it would have done damage to the car and devalued it.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce Articled at a family law firm, thankfully moved on since. Worst I saw was a decades long case. Husband had been in a motorcycle accident, suffered brain damage. Has severely limited capacity going forward. Got a huge settlement afterwards. Wife spent the next several years stealing the entirety of the guy's money and property variously by forging his signature or putting documents in front of him that he couldn't understand and telling him they were something benign so he'd sign it. She then forged a bunch of letters from a tax authority and convinced him he was about to go to jail and further convinced him to flee the country. He finally came back several years later to find out everything he owned was in her name and one of the documents he was told to sign were divorce papers. Dude got left with nothing. I moved on before I found out how the story ended.

Not a lawyer, but a child of divorce. My parents owned a couple duplexes in town as well as our house. They had saved enough up to pay a property off in full and my dad convinced my mom that it was better to pay off one of the duplexes instead of the house. A couple months later he files for divorce and only asks for the paid off property. He got it, lived in one side and rented out the other and stuck my mom with 2 kids and 3 mortgages (and of course refused to pay child support for my sister because she wasn't his biodaughter even though he had legally adopted her). Still makes me feel icky how conniving he was.

A few weeks later, a “robbery” occurred and the only thing that was stolen was the jewelry that he had gifted her, which was intended for their daughter. She tried to file an insurance claim on the jewelry but forgot to get appraisals and add as Riders so the max insurance paid was $1,500 for over $20,000 of jewelry. Turns out wife got the dog in the divorce and he has to send it to her and she told him as soon as she gets it she is putting it down. He asks if he can have some time with the dog before the flight so they go out in the grass and they both roll around in the grass, dogs tail just waggin away not knowing anything about his future. The guy puts him back in the crate drops him off the counter says thanks and then just walked out head down and just looking crushed. That was 30 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday.

Not a lawyer. But my partner has a mate who was going through a messy divorce. He registered as a “gambling addict” and went to some gambling anonymous (or whatever it’s called) and proceeded to go to the casino every day, taking wads of cash with him, pretending to gamble it all away, while he was secretly squirreling it all away. That way, when it came to the divorce and he was questioned where all his money went, he could “prove” that he lost it all through his gambling addiction and never had to pay her a penny.

When my parents got a divorce and all the financial stuff was settled, my mom agreed to take on the existing debt they had. As the paperwork was filed and things progressed with finalizing the divorce, my dad went out and ran his credit cards up to their limit buying himself new home entertainment toys and random s**t. To the tune of about 12K. There was nothing my mom could legally do about it so she was forced to slowly pay it off over the next 10 years.

Lawyers Share 30 Petty And Intense Stories Of People Destroying Each Other During Divorce Our office worked on a messy divorce in which the parties were required to split up some antique pots. Well, when the husband delivered the wife's share of the pots to our office, he [pooped] in each one.

I have a friend who went through a nasty divorce with a cheating spouse. His wife wanted the money from some penny stocks that did really well. He told her ok if you pay the $75 (somewhere around there) transfer fee you can have then. She did. Little did she know the stocks had taken a massive dive and were now worth less than the transfer fee.

Wife obviously knows nothing about "penny stocks", also known in the biz as "pump n dump".

Not my divorce, but my divorce lawyer told me about a case she was involved in where both clients were so petty that they had to all meet to argue over literally every single scrap of everything. The final object that neither would settle on was a ceramic rabbit statue, a really generic one from Home Depot or whatever. Zero sentimental value but since it was the final item, neither side wanted to "lose" the last thing and they dragged it out over 3 separate meetings for this one thing. I don't remember which ended up getting it, but once they settled it and signed everything, the "winning" party stuck it on their lawyer's desk as a gift and walked out.

I call urban myth: This is just a variation of the above story where they were fighting over an ashtray, just for it to be smashed by the winning party at the steps of the courthouse.

I'm not a divorce lawyer , but ... My prior employer once was 'served' with an obviously forged garnishment 'order' from an employee's (ex?) wife, directing garnishment of his wages in an amount that far exceeded his actual wages. We reported it to the police department.

I hope there were actual consequences for her actions.

I am not really a divorce lawyer but I am currently stuck with a divorce case. Both sides have been at a standstill for at least four months now over a difference of less than a thousand dollars. Like, we could have settled late 2019 but they both just want one last "I won" over the other one. Doesn't help that I hate family law cases to begin with - the only winners are the attorneys and they have to go through a lot of booze to cope with the stuff they deal with.

People make jokes about lawyers but really, so many issues are the clients.

Paralegal for a divorce lawyer here. Our client told us he didn't clear out the marital account after the parties filed. Which technically is true, because while he removed $45,000 he left about $3.50 in there.

Whoa, give him a pat on the back for the restraint he showed, clearly so difficult to leave that $3.50 in the bank. He didn't even leave enough for a service charge, which most banks have after your account has a balance that low. She'd be lucky to catch it before it went into the red. He's a piece of garbage.

Most likely she cheated on him and when/if the other person asked, she was "legally" divorced. Saved her the trouble of having to "sneak" around.

I knew a guy that got out of the military at 19 years so his ex wouldn't get half his pension. He would rather get nothing than give half the pension to his ex if he stayed in one more year.

Ouch...I don't know if that's truly petty as it was his pension, even if she was entitled to half. After all, he did the time, not her.

Yeah, he did the time and would have to give half to her.

I’m a lawyer but have had a very limited amount of experience in divorce cases. The first case I ever worked the husband shaved/waxed every single hair off his body in an attempt to avoid a court-mandated drug test.

Why on earth are divorce cases even resulting in court mandated drug tests?
