A good studio for an artist is a significant place. Creative studios might sometimes look like a pile of rubbish or a mixed-up room, but this is where famous artists' paintings are born!
Look at this assemblage of the greatest artists and their most intimate working places – their studios. I bet you’ve seen many of their works in museums and art history books, but the artist and his studio are often left unseen.
From Salvador Dali’s artist studio full of beautiful women to Pablo Picasso’s decorated hall to David Lynch’s industrial-looking creative space to Francis Bacon’s utter chaos, these photos are intentionally mixed up. You will find both very famous artists and somewhat less popular painters, sculptors, architects, and even their Muses. Some of them are contemporary, but you will also find genius classical masters.
Enjoy the collection!

Probably taken around 1905-10 Based on his age and the paintings in his studio.

I relate a lot to the artists whose "studios" are so busy and full. I cannot find anything if it has been organized. Ever since a young age my ADHD has caused me to be a very disorganized person BUT I could always remember where exactly a specific object is in that "mess" but as soon as someone who come in and start arranging my "space" everything seemed to be more lost in a clean area than it was scattered all around! I have also been a part of the art word since that age of 2 years old due to the creativity my ADHD has given me! I am actually curious to know how many artists have ADHD because the definition of "creativity" is exactly what ADHD does to a person. I only recently started seeing my ADHD as something useful and turn it into a tool instead of allowing it to cause disfunctions and problems.
Hans Hartung
Forget about studio. This is a full locus of habitation anywhere in the world!
Salvador Dali
Not much to see space wise here. The mesmeric art takes up the entirety of Dali's place.
Just love Dali, he was so off his head, he was a genuine Artist but so crazy. Absinthe and drugs obviously got him through his days have ha
Salvador Dali, serealist Artist who turned heads, and still doing so. He had some unusual visuals in his paintings. His mustache was an extension of his personaty. Then he would have times when he would lock himself in room and paint and have his meal delivered through a little hole in the wall. So not to be disturbed, a colourful Artists indeed..

I love working outside, but only in the evenings when the sun is not blinding and the heat is not scorching and uncomfortable. Pretty much the perfect summer night weather is the conditions I enjoy working outside in. I live out in the country, here in the beauty of Montana, and the inspiration that comes to mind in this environment is almost constant. It's hard to get "artist block" when you have miles and miles of open scenic area, high and low, mountains in the distance hills in the near, and open colorful fields surround you. I am truly blessed to be an artist that had the opportunity to be born and raised in Montana that is full of natural art and historic art!

Jackson!!! You dropped paint on the floor again!! Come clean your friggin' mess up!!!
He knew where every drip went; the message on the floor; the power of throwing and knowing when to stop. Genius!

Jackson Pollock= overrated pretentious douche bag who wanted to be an artist but had ZERO talent
I secretly agree with you, but I would be lynched by many East Nashville sophisticants if they found out. First time I saw one of his pieces, I thought it was the work of Pierre Brassau.

Francis Bacon
wow..I am glad I am not the only slob..looks like my space after finals week..:)
So apparently Francis Bacon's studio was my bedroom during art school years. This pleases me.
This makes me feel better about the afflictions my space endures in the name of creativity.
Fantastic! I believe his studio was dismantled and reconstructed in Ireland. I could be mistaken where it resides, love to visit. Out of chaos he found his focus
you are right, it is in the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin...a city well worth a visit, the Main Gallery has a bunch of Turner watercolours only exhibited in Januuary (because of the light and because it was a condition of his bequest)

Have visited this magical studio in Aix twice. Came home and when my husband had his studio built, we had the walls painted the same colour as did Cezanne. I found the colour at Benjamin Moore: sparrow. It's a bit darker than Cezanne's colour but same otherwise.. It makes the walls disappear! eowana in Manassas , VA
Load More Replies...On the right side of the window, there is a tall slot about 8" wide same height like the window , for him to slide big frame painting out.
YES.. When we visited the first time, the docent referred to it as 'a crack in the wall'.. People turned around.. and most didn't even ' get' it.. I went over to it later on and saw what it was.. not a crack.. maybe that was the only word the lady could think of to describe it in English.. but a tall thin little door with a latch hook on it.. amazing.. and I figured out what it was for.. to lower large paintings to the courtyard.. The steps up to the studio were narrow and difficult to do this.. You are so right TsanglangLiu.. Few others understood.
Load More Replies...I love the window view!!! perfect for an artist especially when you are in the thought process "mode" and trying to get inspiration. it's common for a lot of artists to stare out a window and watch the environment around waiting for that inspiration to hit us!!! I, personally, sit in my dining room (it's made to be an isolated area by walls that separate it from the kitchen and living room), and stare out the 3 standard sized windows, side by side made to act like a "bay" window, and watch the cows in the field across from my field/yard and/or watch the cars drive by until I conjure up the inspiration that I needed.
Painting in a bow tie. . . the irony of the time when being an artist was considered "low class," yet today so many so-called "artists" are classless.
I would just love to be around him working with all that light coming through the window!!!

man this guy got me in trouble in 1st year of design i had to make a mobile and it was so crappy i was ashamed of presenting it
I bet it is harder than it looks to do. We took some patio furniture by Salterini in to a metal shop to be sanded and repainted a year or so ago; There was an article about the calder mobile in the Washington Post framed in the shop.. I noticed and commented.. The lady said they restored it for the museum in DC.. Sure impressed me! It was in a metal shop in Manassas Park, VA.

Jenny Saville RA (born 7 May 1970) is a contemporary British painter associated with the Young British Artists.[1] She is known for her large-scale painted depictions of nude women. Saville works and lives in Oxford, England.[2] In 1992 she was awarded a six month scholarship to the University of Cincinnati where she states that she saw "Lots of big women. Big white flesh in shorts and T-shirts. It was good to see because they had the physicality that i was interested in"

why do book illustrators NOT get the same respect as studio artists???
My mother would love your question. They should. They are creating many paintings in a book that tell a story. It's not easy to do. You have to be a story teller and artist, an animator, and understand movement and perspective in a different way than someone who paints one painting. It's a different type of fine art and should be respected. There are some children's book illustrator museums popping up now. See: The Eric Carle Museum and the NCCIL.

Fabulous. My studio looks a lot like the really messy studios here.
Often static or distancing, these images fail to bring to life the joy, despair and enthusiasm that must have been palpable in these studios
There is one fabulous studio that is missing which has 14,000 sq.feet and it belongs to a fabulous artist. The best way to view his art and his biography is Google MUSEOBENINI on facebook. You will be so surprised to see what he has accomplished over 60 years .
