30 People That Had Enough Gall To Leave These Questionable Tips For Their Server
Interview With ExpertCan I give you a few tips? Never grocery shop while hungry, wear SPF every day, and stop leaving terrible tips for servers at restaurants!
We all know that tipping culture can be very divisive. Those who work in the service industry are adamant that waiters deserve great tips, while critics don’t understand why restaurants can’t simply pay staff a living wage. But one thing we should all be able to agree on is that leaving servers with insulting tips is not recommended.
Below, you’ll find a compilation of awful tips that waiters have received from customers and shared online. Enjoy scrolling through this frustrating and confusing list, and be sure to upvote the messages and things you can’t believe patrons left!

Someone Left Me A Tiny Shirt As A Tip
That looks real buy the texture and weight of it. I got a few tips like that back in the 90's. Thought it was pretty cute.
Load More Replies...I still have an origami dog tip that I was given a few decades ago. It still males me smile.
When I was a server, I got a shirt like this and an elephant! They made my day. 😊
That is prety neat. That is a ten dollar bill, as long as it was a single person and didn't buy a expensive meal, that would be a decent tip.
Best Tip I’ve Received
The tip was $20 and the cigarette and booze. So more than 22%. Why is this on here?
Let's hope the server is old enough to be allowed to have either of these...
As They Left Their Dad Said To Me: "Idk Where My Kids Get Their Sense Of Humor From"
Total is 420.69. 4/20 is unofficially recognized as weed smoking day. 69 is an intimate position for two partners to pleasure each other while they are being pleasured themselves
Load More Replies...Can’t decide wether them knowing what marjiuana is or what 69 is is worse
They just wanted you to know they had a good time “eating out” that night
Working in the service industry certainly isn’t for everyone. It entails long days on your feet, requires keeping a smile on your face while customers are rude and annoying, and you never know exactly how much money you’ll walk home with at the end of the night until you close. Some days you might get lucky and leave with a fat stack of cash thanks to generous tippers, while other nights, you may head home feeling like the entire day was a waste.
Despite the fact that working as a server doesn’t require education and can often provide flexible hours, the job definitely isn’t easy. In fact, it can be stressful, exhausting, fast-paced and often also includes a toxic working environment. According to a survey from Cozymeal, 71% of restaurant workers say they’ve experienced anxiety, 38% say they’ve experienced depression, 48% report having a sleep disorder, and 42% say they have chronic pain all thanks to their jobs.
Best Non-Money Tip You’ve Received?
A request for folks who make these: please quit leaving them at state parks. They're pretty but stick out like an eyesore in all the nature stuff. If you must leave it somewhere, pick a place where someone else can pick it up and take it home. :)
Sorry I Politely Asked Your Crotch Goblin To Not Throw Sugar At Other Guests. Lmao
If you don't control your kids, someone else will and you won't like they way they do it. If you don't like it, control your brats. NO ONE likes kids running around, throwing things, or being noisy in dining places.
I firmly believe restaurants should offer childfree dining hours. Just a few hours a week would be lovely
Load More Replies...But some had parents who would step in and say "Don't do that" before someone else had to.
Load More Replies...Parenting!!! They wouldn't have said that if the parents had done their job!! GEEZ!!
I hope the people you protected from badly behaved children made up the difference
But...if he wrote "tip" there, is it still "0" tip...? It's a worthless piece of advise, but he's not doing what he wrote he'd do: just zero tip.
I saw a kid sucking a ketchup bottle at a restaurant once
Was the child really throwing sugar packets or something equally rude? In that case, being reprimanded by the server was warranted and the server deserves their tip. HOWEVER, I don't trust anyone who refers to children as "crotch goblins." Too many mean adults like to trash kids for no reason other than THEY want to be the most immature person in the room.
Nice Tip
Nice touch, I suppose, but I suggest that the situation called for currency, not artistry
unless you're picasso, you don't get to tip with a drawing on a napkin...the simpson's said it all: https://comb.io/6itteV
To find out more about what it’s like to work as a server, we got in touch with Ned from The Waiter’s Academy, who was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda. When it comes to what kind of person is perfect for this job, Ned says, “A great server is like a blend of a stand-up comedian, a multitasking wizard, and a mind reader.”
“We recommend the job to those who thrive on human interaction, possess mental fortitude, and are not afraid to hustle,” he noted. “If you think you're terrible at everything else, that helps too! Welcome aboard!”
$39 Tip In Coins
And as Elvis almost sang, "Love my tender, ..."
Load More Replies...Taking notes...good way to get rid of change in that "spare change" jumbo cup...
Except I don't see a single penny there, only quarters, nickels, and dimes
Load More Replies...Getting tips in coins was useful occasionally at the pub I worked at. Sometimes if it had been slammed that day we'd be short on certain change such as 20ps for example. All our tips were pooled btw for sharing between the kitchen and the front of house. So we'd see what the till was short of and swap for a note.
So weird, here (SA) we almost never pay with cash unless it's for a car guard (yes, literally, a guy who is unemployed who hangs around watching your car in case it gets jacked).
When I worked at Chipotle no one wanted to take the coins from the tip jar. I ended up with about $200 in change alone. Still have a bag of quarters stashed somewhere 🤣
If that's from one order but they left it in a cup like that, I'd be happy. Lol i love change tho
OK? I'd take it. You can roll em and take it to the bank :)
No Tip For You
It's usual in some places, completely out of order in others. This customer was clearly from out of State - but a little tolerance of other people's ways is often a mark of humanity
If USA it sounds like an up tight white B from the north got served by someone from the south. I've eaten meals in truck stops and been called honey, sweetheart etc and there was absolutely no "flirting" involved. It was just how they talked being kind. I got similar working IT over the phone from a few of our customers in the southern states.
Favorite Note A Table Has Left Me
As far as the pros and cons of being a server, Ned shared that some of the best parts are having “flexible schedules, global mobility, and the opportunity to rake in good money for those who excel.” On the other hand, some of the downsides of being a server include “clocking in long hours and battling stress,” Ned says. “But hey, diamonds are made under pressure,” he added.
This "$100" Tip I Received Tonight
I see $42 left for a $34.23 bill. That is a 22% tip and a poor excuse for marketing a law firm.
I’d be visiting them, using up their half an hour with a completely fabricated story and then at the thirtieth minute decide not to use them.
I'm giving this the benefit of the doubt because the customer may have had it in their wallet/purse and left it accidentally... Although if they left it on purpose? Would you be able to hire someone from their firm to represent you on the murder charge for leaving such a "banknote" as a tip?... Bear with me here, you've been slammed busy serving, you're exhausted, it's getting towards the end of a tough shift where anything that could go wrong? Went wrong. You see this banknote and for a few seconds? You're like "Omg! Omg!!!" etc! $100!!!"...then you realise what it actually is... And you want to stab them with a butter knife.
This Was Left As A Tip At My Restaurant
Where they'll spend an eternity serving customers just like their self.
Load More Replies...Fake Christianity in a nutshell- doing the opposite of many of the things Jesus taught his followers to do. 🙄
If you don't go to Heaven, Luiz, be a ghost and haunt these people until they tip servers properly.
As long as these people and I spend eternity in different places, I'm flexible when it comes to location.
Why would I want to go there when the people who leave these tips are there
I hate this sort of stuff. How do you win people over to any topic if you start by pissing them off? A tract instead of a tip. A fake $20 bill that turns out to be a Jesus tract. Emotionally it is the equivalent of slapping a stranger in the face and then saying, "Hey! Want to hear about this thing that I'm into?" Their brain is focused on the slap and almost certainly makes them non-receptive to the 'thing".
Coworker Got This Note Today
If your server doesn't do their best to encourage the spread of illness, were you even served?
... various unofficial additions to your food do suggest themselves, if you're not that bothered about cleanliness and health precautions ...
Load More Replies...I wonder how many people died from Covid because of people like this 😡
I'm guessing servers wearing masks is an issue for management, why penalize the server for an issue out of their hands??
Really!?! Your going to complain about the server NOT getting bodily fluids on your food? What an awful person
Trying not to give you a deadly disease is disgusting and disrespectful?
Next time just cough over their food. This is the most stupid reason I've ever heard.
Yes, as a horrible disease entering your blood stream and trying to kill you isnt “disgusting and disrespectful”
Okay, just let me make sure I really breathe all over your food. Better?
We were also curious about what the serving expert would like all customers to know about their waiters. “That we're not magicians,” Ned told Bored Panda. “We can't be everywhere at once! And yes, the tip is the North Star of our efforts. No one would work this job if it was not for the tips!”
The Tip Line Said "Turn Over For Tip"
Maybe the server was also being an a*****e? It does happen.
Load More Replies...Duck, that's a lot of bending over for few pennies. Need to visit some countries in Europe where customers service totally don't give a sh.it.
In europe we dont have tipping culture. So they can be however they want, we dont need tips. if you rely on tips, of course your service should be really good. i dont approve this condescending customer but the comparison with europe is not it
Load More Replies...Well we don't really know anything about the customer, except that he or she was not satisfied by service received (points 3-5), and overall it gives the impression that waiter was acting like an a*****e and not doing the job right. Even more strange is that waiter is obviously surprised by not receiving the tip while 1) in US customer is always right, and 2) service provided was obviously subpar. If my waiter was acting like this I would not tip too.
The full quote is, "The customer is always right in matters of taste." - Harry Selfridge. Retailers just chose to ignore that last part. So, no, the customer is not always right. That self-destructive viewpoint is becoming less and less acceptable to people with a sense of self-respect and self-worth. You don't need to be a doormat and have to accept others' bad behavior and attitudes. Also, you don't consider that perhaps the place was extremely busy and understaffed. If the server doesn't attend to your water within 60 seconds, look beyond yourself and see the entire situation around you.
Load More Replies...My mother would be proud of me if I refused service to this jerk the next time they came in.
I want this customer to go to Vienna just once in their lives and experience the "grantiger Ober". I think many Americans would probably explode in indignation!
my mother would be proud of me if I gave this "tipper" a black eye, so....
$1 Tip On $500+ Bar Tab
That's what cheap looks down and shakes its head in disgust.
Load More Replies...I know I'm going to get slammed for this, but these people spent over $500 at this establishment, presumably like many other patrons, so I'm wondering why a server should rely on the customer to further supplement their wages. Why can't business owners do this? I know this is at the crux of the whole tipping debate, I'm just wondering why it's so different here in the US from other countries. Why is the restaurant business able to get away with expecting customers to pay their employees' wages, while no other business does this?
You can have this debate, but stiffing the waitstaff because the government won't require their employers to pay well both is a jerk move and doesn't make sense.
Load More Replies...At this point, don't even give a tip. Goodness gracious people, do we need to be taught manners all over again like in preschool?
If you don't want to tip I suggest you start supporting the enforcement of an appropriate minimum wage.
So do you guys tip at a bar if you're sitting at the bar buying the drinks, or just if you're at a table and a waitress brings them?
If this person ever comes in again, the Bartender should refuse to serve them - nope, you've proven yourself to be a low life leach.
spend 500 in a bar... low life leach... because you didnt tip an extra 100 dollars... ok
Load More Replies...Just add a 01 and new decimal between the 1 and 0. Then make that 5 a 6 and you're golden 👍
A Guy At My Table Complimented My Glasses And Then Left This Note On His Check Lol
Looks like a decent guy to me. Made a honest compliment, sensed that it might have been misinterpreted and felt in appropriate, and set things straight.
Ned was also kind enough to provide us with some tips for those struggling with the server life. “If stress, long hours, and kitchen chaos are dampening your spirits, either embrace the chaos or gracefully bow out,” he says. “The learning curve is steep, but with a smile, resilience, and a bit of time, you'll master the art of serving.”
When Karen Tells You Everything Was Great, But Then Changes Her Tone Once She Doesn’t Get Something Free For Saying It’s Her Birthday
... if it was true at all. I read this as "customer was in a bad mood and wanted to spread it about a bit". Wouldn't it be fun if the server could write a review on the customers?
Load More Replies...I told you it was my birthday! Why didn't you act like you were so excited about My BiRtHdAy?! For a 60-year-old, some 6-year-olds have better manners, SMH.
I had a great experience at a restaurant where I took my friend after she FINALLY quit her awful job. When I made the reservation they asked if it was a special occasion. I jokingly said we were celebrating my friend quitting her s****y job. At the restaurant, she got a card congratulating her on quitting her s****y job. And a small cake. And throughout the night, staff would stop and say congratulations on quitting your s****y job. It was great. We tipped accordingly.
"We tipped accordingly". Upvote for that - it would encourage the staff to do the same for the next customers with the courage to tell it like it is. And shows your humanity.
Load More Replies...By the time you reach your 60th birthday you should be over birthdays, not expecting random strangers to make a fuss over you. Bizarre.
If I manage to reach 60yrs old? I definitely expect a fuss!!! 😜
Load More Replies...I Got This As A Tip In My Bar. In Scotland
Did you pick out a mansion which you'll buy with that powerfull curency?
It's not customary in the UK to tip. This must've been for a laugh.
In Scotland, we pay our workers a minimum wage. They don't rely on tips
Is tipping a thing in Scotland? If not, hint - this is a totally crappy tip.
It's not the low tip, it's that Scotland (amazingly) doesn't use US dollars.
Load More Replies...... And Americans have asked in a past post why they occasionally have a bad reputation in other countries... Because of people pulling stunts like this. Btw? I'm not 'America Bashing', the vast majority of Americans that I've served have always been really great, polite, funny etc! It's always the eejits of any country who stay in your memory.
Today $1 = 0.93 Euros. That doesn't even cover the cost of a slice of cheese.
"What do you mean you don't accept US currency? you must because 'merica" :-D
I Was In The Weeds And Very Focused I Guess…
$100 says the server was a woman and the customer a man... of boomer age.
Nah. I've gotten that smile b******t from contemporaries. I had to explain to the clerk at the pharmacy drive-thru why this was rude. The man could literally be giving meds to clinically depressed or dying folks and he's telling them smile! Some people are just idiots. But 9/10 it was a man talking to a woman.
Load More Replies...One time I went to a restaurant to eat. My waitress wasn't smiling. Throughn one of my conversations with her, I found out that she had flat feet been on her feet for a few hours. . Felt sorry for her because I have flat feet and knew what it is like. Left a little bigger tip than normal. Shouldn't judge your server because they are not smiling. You don't know what that are going through. As long as they are giving you good service, need to tip decently.
hate when i see people leave notes like this. it makes me think they have never been in the food/hospitality industry, especially as a server. being a server is like being in an opening night play. you know your lines, your blocking, etc. but, what you don't know is if the scenery and supporting cast will be doing everything they need to do. is the kitchen running rough? are the bussing crew behind or do you have to do it? has the audience been standing in the rain for three hours and just want to get dried so they really don't want to be bothered too much or have they been standing in the hot sun and demanding to be cooled off immediately? so, when a server has it together and takes your order they may be all smiles but look at them when they turn away. usually the smile goes because they are focusing. it's like being on stage. you are expected to be pleasant, semi-entertaining with suggestions, and grateful that they came in. that tip you leave is the applause.
I've never been a server and I have compassion for people who work in service industries.
Load More Replies...Sounds like that restaurant where a lot of customers complained that servers should "show more skin."
A generous tip probably would have brought out that smile and turned around a b*t*h of a day.
Finally, Ned added that the job market is serving opportunities on a silver platter. “Seize them!” he says. “In conclusion, the server's life is demanding, but the demand for skilled servers has never been higher. So, chin up, hustle on, and may the tips be ever in your favor!”
A Customer Decided To Tip Their Server Like This
I'm going to write my own ending to this - - - The harassed, tired and exhausted server sighed, emptied out the glass, cleared the table, finished their shift... It had been a long day but they needed to pick up some things on the way home from the local shop. They still had the wet banknote and on a whim bought a lottery ticket and won. Won enough to live comfortably for the rest of their life...
Do you want to make a short film together? You as the script writer and me as the animator?
Load More Replies...At least you can fish it out of the glass... some folks do the trick with the upside down glass of water, you get wet trying to get the money out.

I do that, sorry. But I assure you I'm pretty normal.

People Don’t Understand The Restaurant Industry
If you don't think being a server is a real job, don't go to restaurants that have them. It's not just a lack of understanding of the industry. Some people just don't want to see their server as an equal. They see themselves as royalty and the servers as peasants.
I think you missed the point. They didn't say server was not a 'real job'. The comparison suggests they are not great around people and if they can' be patient with people maybe they should consider a (desk) job where the focus is not interacting with strangers all day. I wouldn't write something like that on the charge slip but I've definitely had some servers like that over the years.
Load More Replies...I was tempted to skimp on the tip because the server hovered and disturbed my Mom and I every three minutes yesterday. It wasn't busy. I have been in retail for seventeen years, though, so I get it. But don't rush customers, mmk?
Went on a date on *valentines day*. Place was super slammed and we didnt have reservations. I was from us but had been living abroad and forgot, he was not from USA. He complained that the server seemed rushed. Had to explain it was valentines. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but there wasnt another date. Even if you dont know it is a holiday, you can clearly see they are slammed.
You mean the desk job I used to have that doesn't exist anymore since everyone has a computer on their desk and is able to do for themselves the secret, arcane functions only we computer cognisante performed when I got my degree in computer wizardry?
Since it said be patient, it sounds like the wait staff needed to do a turnover and they just wanted to sit over their coffee and chat for a while. OK for small town diners, but larger restaurants in cities/suburbs plan for the time usually 1 1/2 hrs.
Depending on where you live, you might find tipping to be completely unnecessary. And if the country you live in does pay servers a living wage, you have every right to choose not to tip! But unfortunately, in the United States, most servers do survive on their tips. The federal minimum wage for tipped employees in the US is a measly $2.13 per hour. Meanwhile, the minimum wage for most jobs is $7.25 an hour. Without earning decent tips, there’s no way servers can make ends meet.
This Was Given To Me As A Tip Yesterday
Ironically, things like this make one want to avoid churches rather than inspire a person to want to go to one.
Or go to church and put it in the collection box.
Load More Replies...Benjamin Franklin told us in his autobiography that he was a “thorough deist.” Franklin adhered to a religion that one might call a doctrineless, moralized Christianity. This kind of faith suggests that what we believe about God is not as important as living a life of love and significance.
It's really annoying that these people go by the term "Christian".
Load More Replies...TECHICALLY, this is a crime. Your customer passed a bad bill, which is counterfeiting. Find them and have them arrested. I bet THEN they would learn some manners.
I'm on the City-Data forum and once I started a thread in the Religious section asking churchgoers why they were so stingy with tips. You'd have thought the sky had fallen. No one admitted to not leaving a tip. No one admitted to ever even hearing about stingy church groups before and everyone said I was Christian-bashing. I've worked as a waitress twice and have friends who have been servers. We all know church people are the cheapest tippers ever. But hey, I was Christian-bashing, right?
LOL one of my friends got one of these from a brother in law... don't understand why he still has it as he isn't on buddy-buddy terms with the BIL.
This is the cheapest tip of all. I would avoid their church as if it were the fires of Hell and tell them so.
Customer Left A Pretty Sh**ty Tip, Quite Literally
Some people are simply full of what the diaper contains.. 🥴
Load More Replies...I once worked in the children's section of a department store. I found a nasty diaper on a shelf between some merchandise. The bathroom was just around the corner from where I found it. Also, there was a trash can by the registers that was even closer.
As a mom, I can't even. This is wrong on so many levels. I hope that customer got banned.
Last Table Of The Night
If you are in the US you shouldn't go out to eat at a restaurant if you won't tip. It's bizarre in other countries, but in the US it is currently part of the person's wages and they get taxed on a certain percent the government assumes they receive in tips.
Or maybe just pay staff a living wage like most countries and stop expecting Tourism/locals to bridge that gap?
Load More Replies...This is rude...unless they were afraid of tipping just $2...but they could have done both then.
This reminds me of the parents to drag all their kids to the movies because they can't afford a babysitter... By the time you pay for all the tickets, you could have got a babysitter.... Similarly, if you can't afford to tip don't go to a restaurant where you're paying close to $75 for food....
Until servers are guaranteed a living wage just for doing their jobs, they’re going to keep asking for tips. And while it certainly isn’t necessary to tip self-checkout machines, or baristas who simply give you a latte in a to-go cup, it’s nice to prepare yourself to leave a tip before dining out in the US. And if you can’t, it might be better just to cook a meal at home. You’ll be saving money anyway!
It’s Always The Extra Nice Customer Who Asks For Extra Sides When You Check On Them
Working at restaurants that had free rolls I could guess the tip based on how many they asked for and the rach to go with it.
Hey, if its the place i think, i devour those roll. I swear they put crack in them or something. But i do tip well.
Load More Replies...Would this be legally binding that they are going to give you an actual heart?
“Love” is actually a term meaning zero in tennis. Not sure if the server’s reaction would’ve been different if they were a tennis fan.
Maybe they left cash for tip. Usually you write that tho so server sees if it acdt gets picked up when wait staff cleans table.
And that is so annoying...that the tip is part of the bill in the US. For heaven's, just write the real price on the menu.

You can make coins like this and that are flattened and “stamped” in machines all over. Government doesn’t care. It’s a penny. S****y tip and worthless now. But not going to get someone in trouble over it
Wouldn't this count as "destruction of federal property"? On another note, the part that got cut out probably got passed on to someone else. Two conversions for the price of one!
That is destruction of legal tender. I believe that is federal offense. Could go to prison for that.
When I was a server I received several fake $100 bills with trumps face, and a fake $100000000 bill with Jesus on it
Being A Server With Tattoos/Piercings/Colorful Hair:
Ugg.... if they trusted in their god they wouldn't have to shove their chosen beliefs onto everyone...god would take care of everything
Exactly! If you have a point, there will be people who listen. If you have to force yourself or your message on somebody, you create a dislike reaction. Aggressive ‘missioning’ is counterproductive. But many toxic/fake Christians sadly enjoy (and admit enjoying) the entitled and abusive aspect of behaving this way.

I always wonder how these people would react if they received part of *their* salary in financially speaking useless words on paper?
Slight translating error. The Holy Spirit is our advocate (avocado, in Latin).
I don't know how much the tip was, but the proselytising is just damn rude. The customer's beliefs are not part of their eating out experience, they're private. Leave religion out of it

What's even stranger is not paying servers a living wage so they need those tips.

We had an internal joke of tipping each other the same R10 note because neither would accept money from the other, it was fun until we argued and it ended up in a fire place. He he.. Lol?
I live in the US where tipping at a sit down mean is expected. I'm used to it. I had a situation many years ago where the manager comped the meal. Everything on them. I don't remember what happened, but it wasn't the servers fault. They were great. I asked the manager how much it would have cost and he asked why. I told him I wanted to leave an appropriate tip. I left the server a tip based on what it would have been because it wasn't their fault. Why should they suffer?
Can we atheists please start tipping with real money PLUS cool science facts pamphlets? Oh and can we set up next to the JWs with similar scientific facts pamphlets??? 😄
I remember someone detailling how they got a pamplet handed to them by a couple who said "All you need about religion is in here" and it was a religious pamplet. The server opened it and there was a note saying "we're aetheist" and a large dollar bill.

If there is a Hell, I hope it has an extra-nasty place for people who shaft tipped workers.

When are yanks going to learn not to accept unpaid "jobs" with the faint hope of getting "tips"? Demand proper wages or don't take the job.
"Demand proper wages or go homeless" Real great advice there XD

I did apologise to the waiter (who luckily saw the funny side) and we scraped up some cash instead. But 15p would have been a worse insult than nothing at all, I think.
Tipping (or paying extra for something) is a strange thing indeed.
