I saw it way too often working in CPS, and it was awful to see, and frustrating knowing I couldn't do anything about it, even though I always tried to speak up and say the kids should stay together.

Just, side note, fat cats are not healthy cats. Their bodies can't hold up properly to the extra weight, and it can cause issues from arthritis(in many) to liver disease and even an increased risk of certain cancers.

We reached out to Stephen G. Post, Ph.D., a medical school professor, opinion leader, and author of Why Good Things Happen to Good People: How to Live a Longer, Healthier, Happier Life by the Simple Act of Giving, to learn more about the relationship between showing kindness to others and our happiness. Post is a leader in research on the benefits of giving and has promoted the idea of "give and live better" across the world. He was kind enough to have a little chat with us and explain how helping others can fill our lives with joy.

According to the professor, we humans have "a well-known psychological tendency for actions to affect emotion." For example, when we smile (even if we are not especially happy), the action itself will elevate our mood. "There is an emotional 'shift effect' that does not take long, really about one hour in adolescents, perhaps 2 hours in adults," Post said.

He also explained that helping "certainly diverts attention from the self and its problems, and engages the mesolimbic pathway, which releases one of the happiness chemicals dopamine. When engaged, this tends to shut down pathways associated with destructive emotions like rumination, hostility, and anxiety."

This picture was on another thread so I will repeat my comment. If anyone in the UK finds themselves in the situation of the man in this post please look up The Cinnamon Trust. They have a large network of volunteers who help to care for the pets of the sick and elderly. I am a dog walker with them so I regularly walk the dog of an elderly couple who struggle with mobility but they also have people who foster pets while their owners are in hospital.

I had no idea that this is what happened to inpatient’s animals, is this a common thing if there’s no one else to look after it? I can’t imagine anything worse, I would have thought the shelter would look after it and given it back â˜č If I ever come into enough money, I am going to look after all the pets! No one should have to lose their pet like this, it’s so sad.

OP is a transgender woman. Went to coworker's house for tea. Coworker wasn't wearing her hijab, which Laws of Islam dictate that she must around men. This indicates that she accepts that her transgender friend is indeed a woman. A very accepting gesture

    Patsy

To paraphrase an earlier explanation, in the laws of Islam, a woman must wear her hijab when in the presence of men, but with her transgendered friend, she was accepting her as who she really is, hence, she didn't need to wear her jijab in the company of other women. Hope this helped :)

So when we help others, we help ourselves. The professor provided an example of how volunteering improves our well-being. "Survey of 5000 adult Americans indicated 41 percent volunteering about 100 hours per year or estimated couple of hours a week." The vast majority of the participants (70 to 90 percent) said they felt happier, more resilient, and physically healthier. Moreover, they were able to form better friendships and find more meaning in their everyday lives.

"Studies indicate it is good to get together with fellow helpers to debrief and process the experience," he added. It appears that when we have fulfilling and enduring relationships with other people, we create small circles of trust that are good for reflection and can add a lot of value to our lives.

"Our friends are no longer just the folks we hang out with or part with. Helpers report deeper relationships formed in the community of fellow helpers," Post noted, saying that it’s always beneficial to celebrate giving with others.

As soon as i told my boss this, he immediately told me 'dont worry about work. dont come in and dont log in from home either. Take all the time you need and be with your mother' (i am the only one who can do my job btw) she died 3 weeks later from stomach cancer. the time he gave me means more than he will ever know. i could focus solely on caring for her. I lost two friends in a tragic accident my senior year of college. I attempted to attend class in the days afterwards but could not focus because of the grief. I completely zoned out during one class and the professor pulled me aside after class. I presumed he was going to be upset about my lack of participation but he said "Please don't worry about my class, don't come to my class, and don't worry about any assignments. Take the time you need to be with friends and family, then catch up on your other classes. Drop by my office in a couple of weeks and we will come up with a plan to slowly get you caught up!" That was 14 years ago and the kindness that man showed me still brings tears to my eyes. It was the first time I actually felt like eventually everything would be OK again!

I went back to college at 44, and had a lovely professor like this. I got extremely sick, my ears clogged up, and wouldn't clear and couldn't get it figured out. This amazing woman wanted to support me for going back to school at this age, and worked with me. I had had an A before getting sick, and she worked with me, letting me do online stuff so I could keep up a good grade as well as passing. We need more of these people.

Wish my daughter's teachers were as understanding with her instead of coldly sending her to the resource room and interrogating to her why she's crying, and having the audacity to say "Oh, it's only your great grandmother. Why are you so upset?" Her great grandmother wasn't that old (family has 'em young-ish with every generation), and she was very involved and loved in that side of my daughter's family. He continued: "As one who has managed several large volunteer programs, it is best to let helpers self-select the activity or venue they prefer." Sometimes people only want to do the things they are good at, and other times they want to do something entirely new. "Some report a flow state of deep immersion and satisfaction, even a loss of a sense of time," Post said.

If you want to make your days a little brighter, there are a few small steps you can take. Dr. Stephen Post would like to remind you that it’s "not the amount of helping others that matters, but helping from the heart." He advises starting with small things done with kindness. "I like to Stop, Look and Listen mindfully to people around me so I can notice their needs better," he explained, adding that chronological rush can keep us from observing or hearing others’ needs.

that's completely adorable. In my life, I have a 87 year old father and a sort of 90 year old father/grandfather figure. I try to keep the younger one happy by not pushing technology on him (he wants what he wants) and the older one just absolutely loves to be outgoing and involved so if he wants to go to the center of the town where he lives on Christmas eve for "shits and giggles" damn right I am going to take him there - and engage him. Always engage him.

This made me realise just how much I miss my grandmas who both helped raise me when I was younger. When my nanny was in her late 80s we used Google Maps to look up her old childhood home in England--she was so happy to see the street where she lived.

It would be amazing if my school had done this. I can't tell you how many times a teacher made me cry when I was little because I had had a crappy night the night before. (I have to say she was not the nicest teacher from the viewpoint of an 8-year-old with severe anxiety)

I know Ill be downvoted for this but you shouldnt change your behavior based on a note. Some kids have bad night every single night. And all kids deserve kindness and care every single day, not only if they had a bad day at home. This should be your character not a reminder.

They're called sobriety coins, representing how many days the person has gone without alcohol. Each one is for a progressively larger number of days. The silver one is the very first, and it's for one day(the first two weeks are often the hardest). Each one after the silver is for another month of sobriety, up to the one year mark.

Same happened to me... my feet and lower legs were bluish-black by the time I was delivered. The doctor in question died a few years back and is partly to blame as he didn't believe my mother was at point in the delivery she was (this was back in the 60s and most births were home-based) and attended six hours later. I do appreciate him resuscitating me, though.

How did brain damage at birth make her into a drug addict? Did she have resulting pain which required opioids which then led to addiction? Sorry, I've just never heard of this happening and am curious.

More often than not, however, life can be difficult. Unexpected situations, adversities in our personal lives, and small bumps on the road can significantly affect us and make it harder to support others. Post mentioned that there is a side of "human nature that humiliates and de-dignifies others. It is widely expressed."

Fortunately, the professor also had some great news—we are all wired for altruism and kindness. Even if it may seem that there are many unpleasant and insensitive people out there, "we must always remember that everyone has that wonderful generous kindly flip side of the coin. The negative is just a part of the story."

"Never let anyone tell you that altruism and kindness are not real, that they just disguise selfishness. There is a saying that is wrong: 'Scratch an altruist and watch an egoist bleed.' Actually, we are better than that," Post told Bored Panda.

He suggested that a crucial part of increasing the helping mentality in our society is to raise kind children. "There are good ways to do that, including volunteering as a family." That way, people can form stronger and more resilient family bonds.

"Sometimes we learn so much from helping," Post said. "The vast majority of medical students helped a loved one will illness and found it meaningful. Grades go up when students feel that their studying will benefit others. People with altruistic purpose are more eager to learn." So supporting others, even when we face problems, can boost our mood and help us gain perspective.

And no one can convince you that it's enough. When you look in the mirror, you don't see what everyone else sees, and you slowly starve and exercise yourself to death. IMO, when people are like this they should be hospitalized against their wishes. They really can't understand what they are doing to themselves. Dr. Stephen Post is a prominent voice in positive psychology, a field that focuses on how to help humans lead healthy, happy lives on both individual and societal levels. "Positive psychology is not about denying difficult emotions. It’s about opening to what is happening here and now, and cultivating and savoring the good in your life," Ron Siegel, PsyD, assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School, said.

Many want to start sharing kindness with others and reach a whole other level of happiness but are not sure where to start. If that's the case, there is a small exercise to try. The only thing you need to do is flip a coin and check which side is showing when it lands. Heads, do some pleasure-seeking activity like watching a movie, giving yourself a manicure, or dining out.

Tails, do something to help out your community or the people around you. You could give a charitable donation, have a chat with an elderly person, or begin volunteering. Try to notice how it makes you feel at the exact moment and in the days that follow.

Another technique that Harvard Heart Letter suggested would be to practice mindfulness. "Learning to live more in the present is especially helpful when the future is uncertain. Formal mindfulness-based stress reduction programs have been shown to help reduce physical and psychological symptoms in people facing a variety of challenges, including cancer and chronic pain."

Do you notice the difference here, between a parent allowing their child to make a decision, as opposed to the anti-maskers/vaxxers, who talk about what they want for their children. I've never heard one of those parents saying they ever even talked about with their kids.

This restaurant is in NJ. There is one in D.C., run by a Muslim man, Sakina Halal Grill, that has given out free meals to many homeless people, up to 80 per day. He almost lost his restaurant during the pandemic, but a Go Fund Me was subscribed to by his customers, and he was able to resume serving food to paying customers and able to feed those who are homeless as well.

This is truly heartfelt and such a kind gesture. Nobody should have to go hungry or feel shame for not being able to afford a meal. This reminds me of a cafe I used to frequent at my old work place where you could purchase a drink or little meal that would be donated to someone in need.

Lastly, one of the ways to stay positive during difficult times is sitting down and appreciating the things you’re grateful for. It allows us to acknowledge the goodness in our lives and detach from the things that go wrong. Thinking about your past, present and future will help you to not take things for granted and remain hopeful for what’s to come. Even if it may sound a bit cheesy, keeping a gratitude journal can help you become more aware of the things you’re thankful for.

Downvotes will probably follow this but...do we know if there was many journalists with Maori face tattoos that have been refused the opportunity to present primetime news? I am happy for her and the fact that she can represent her culture on a big stage...but I feel like these headlines are written in a way that causes people to immediately assume there is a huge problem behind it.

After decades of having colonialists trying to stamp out Māori culture, it's really important to have role models like her to empower young Māori to take their amazingly rich culture back. This is a big deal. I smile every time I see young tangata whenua bearing their whakapapa on their face.

Sometimes, when an elderly owner passes away, the family who are left can't take them. Every animal at a shelter has a shot at a second chance. It's a much better option than having the pet euthanized.

Yes - sometimes the incoming cat just cannot get on with the bereaved family’s cat. Or the latter has a vicious psychopath for a kid.

My husband and I only adopt senior dogs. Three just passed away over the last two years. We have one old guy left. We're letting him be spoiled as our "only child". We'll adopt again. It's really tough but it seems to be what we need to do. I can't imagine the elderly babies not having a home to feel safe and be taken care of.

It’s cats for me, but I love this idea too! When my dearly beloved old cat Schnuppi died last year, I thought I could never have another cat. Then someone told me there was a 17 year old cat in a shelter, that nobody wanted to adopt. She‘s not that healthy and will probably only be around for another year, but the time she has left will be happy, and I know that I will keep adopting old cats to give them a last loving home!

This is why people coming out of hard times, be it substance abuse, prison or anything else, need support. I doubt many, if any, of them really want to end up stuck in the endless hell-loop that they're in but dragging themselves out of the hole they're in isn't easy. Just look at the face of someone who's achieved this and they look like they've won the lottery- it might not be much but it's another huge step on the road to recovering/building their self esteem/self worth.

I am adopted, and while this is sometimes true, it's not in my case. I am black, and my birth parents had to sadly put me up for adoption only because of financial issues. I was only adopted because my adoptive parents didn't care what skin color I was. I would have been taken away from them and placed in the foster care system if they cared about my race. Adoption isn't always beauiful. There is a TON of trauma on the child and the first parents.

I don't know why people try to use "you're adopted" as an insult. People who adopt do so because they WANT to. Whomever was adopted was WANTED. My brothers used to torment me by telling me I was adopted until my parents told me, "Next time they say that, tell them that we adopted you because we wanted you and we just happened to get stuck with them". It worked like a charm.

I had the same exact breed of cat when I was little
then we had to move but couldn’t afford the plane ride for the cat so I had to give him to a girl in my sister’s school. I miss him so much, hopefully he is eating well and is healthy

Why don't they let the guy face home plate so he can watch the game? The only thing more boring than a baseball game is being at a baseball game and not being able to see what's going on.

Been there, done that - you have MUCH better appreciation for college/uni if you take a gap. Straight from HS into college is setting most kids up for a wasted year or two as they try to figure out what they REALLY wan to do.

Looking into courses myself. Getting a job in my small town is already difficult, add a disability on top of that and it's damn near impossible. So I'm doing research into what I can do, what is needed, and what the local college has available that would also interest me. I hope to find something soon and begin by fall.

My Public School had something like this, way back in 1955. There were a lot of post-war "New Canadians", with kids, who were struggling. The box was on a chair in a closet between the nurse's office and the Principal's office, so kids who needed it could slip in and out without anyone noticing. After a couple of years, the teachers who organized it noticed (and mentioned to my Mum) that there was now more 'Old World' donations, like spaghetti and Schnitzel. I think it worked, all right.

What makes it more terrifying is the number of knives that had bodily fluids on them - some arrived in evidence tubes. Some are also engraved with messages from the families of those killed in knife crime. It's an incredible scultpure

That picture was taken in my town. My 13 year old daughter spent 10 minutes just staring at it. Most are simple kitchen knives, but there were also machetes, flick knives, zombie knives, knuckle dusters. She just couldn't understand how anyone would want to have an object whose sole purpose was to harm someone else. Glad we live in a town where she doesn't feel the worry about self protection that some of these poor kids do.

I realized there was a problem growing up in Africa and seeing all the black people with the plasters/band-aids standing out on their skin, while it blended with mine. It's taken nearly 50 years for producers to realize that people aren't all white.

And they paid it 100% off. Housing costs are terrible nowadays. My father paid $12,000 for a house that his ex wife still owns and lives in. She got it appraised to update her insurance and it was appraised at $275,000. This is ridiculous but not worth taking away from this persons happiness from paying off that tremendous debt.

In my town here in Sligo my late mother founded a quilting group just so she could meet and make like minded friends after my Dad died. The group of people she met and made the group with were excellent quilters just like she was. She then had the idea of making quilts for sick and dying babies and young children in our local hospital. She called it "The Linus Project" after Linus in the Peanuts cartoons. The quilts were all made at the quilters expense, and donated free to the hospital. The parents were allowed to keep the quilt given to them. Some times babies and children who died were buried in them but for more often than not the parents kept the quilt as it was the last blanket their child was wrapped in. If the child survived they got to take the quilt home and keep it. They made hundreds of quilts and even if our local hospital didn't need as many they gave quilts to other hospitals too. My mother passed away of cancer last year. I miss her so much. She was a true inspiration and everybody loved her.

Filters, heavy. She's definitely healthier but a lot of color correction has gone on.

Remember When Tom Holland Promised Bridger He Could Come To The Filming Of Spider-Man? He Delivered

Remember When Tom Holland Promised Bridger He Could Come To The Filming Of Spider-Man? He Delivered

First, a huge thank you to Tom, @harryholland64, @zendaya, and the entire Marvel/Sony cast and crew for this dream-come-true adventure.

When we first arrived on set, I was a little apprehensive that once the “curtain was pulled back” that the magic of the movies would be lost for the kids. The opposite was true! Tom, Zendaya, Harry, @lifeisaloha, @tonyrevolori, and the entire cast/crew made our kids feel like stars. They don’t just act the part of friendly neighborhood heroes - that’s what they truly are.

The look on the kids’ faces was priceless when we rounded the blue-screen to see Tom, in full costume, high above the set on a light post. It was emotional to see him waive at the kids like he was the one that was supposed to be excited - not the other way around.

He does not mention his situation beforehand, but as someone who has known people who have received their citizenship, congrats to him! Others will question why and make comments, but it's people like him who will help going forward.

Seriously, try getting a succulent. They thrive on abuse. Just make sure to get succulent soil, they sell it in big box hardware stores. Plant it in the succulent soil, and most of them only need watered about once a month. Set in the sun, and done

when a mated pair of sand cranes moved into the empty lot across from my apartment building, the neighborhood put up a Crane sign like thus. it's definitely warranted, since when I worked 3rd shift, one night one of them was sleeping in the main road. nearly hit it. it bleary looked up at my headlights and I managed to drive around it at least. never saw them in the road again, thankfully. we see them with fledglings every year :)

They got the idea from Finland who have been doing it from the 1930s. After the first baby, you can either have a box or a cash equivalent with subsequent children I believe. This is why the attitude of we're the best country ever lets people down - if you're open to looking around you can see who does things better than you and learn from them and they can learn from the things you do best. That way we all improve.

the box can be used as a bassinette. Not guessing - you can see the foam mattress. I don't think they are the only country in Europe who does this either. Awesome program.

That's true. Maternity pack/baby box was invented in Finland over 80 years ago and it's now in use in over 60 countries.

Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding (like savoury popovers to Americans I think), veg, potatoes and gravy (British gravy not US gravy) :)

If you're not from the UK and don't know why this is such a lovely gesture- the Sunday roast dinner is a traditional family meal, and in many places people still actually go 'home' to their parents to get together to eat it. It's like a little mini-Thanksgiving each weekend. It takes hours to prepare. Sharing your Sunday roast with a stranger is a really friendly gesture. I would be very moved if someone did this for me!

Those who can afford these things like food and haircuts should buy a meal etc from these businesses to give to the less fortunate when they turn up. This would help worthy businesses keep helping others and prosper enough to be there for many years going forward.

In Italy they do this with coffee, they'll buy one for themselves and then one in reserve for someone who can't afford it. I really like this idea, but I can see it being taken advantage of in North America by greedy people who want everything free.

What makes you so sure it doesn't? I'm not religious and am all for real science. However, for all we know, a kidnapper could see this kid and feel bad and return a kidnapped child. Not to mention the placebo and nocebo effects that proves that what we believe can actually both cure and cause illnesses. Science does not rule out that prayers could have any kind of effect. Being sick and having people pray for you and for you to know that you got support, and perhaps believing that it will help cure you may very well help you get better for instance
