“AITA For Wearing My Wedding Dress To Someone Else’s Wedding?”

Even though a wedding is typically one of the happiest moments in a couple’s life, it’s also a time when, due to stress, tensions might run high, too.

That’s likely one of the reasons behind the fight this redditor had with her friend during the latter’s wedding. The bride went off the deep end when she saw the dress the OP arrived in, which was the same outfit she wore to her own wedding. Soon enough, a fight broke out, leaving the redditor wondering if she was a jerk in the situation.

Unless specified otherwise, people are often expected to follow certain unwritten rules regarding wedding attire

A wedding is an excellent occasion to dress up, which might require airing out something that’s been hanging in the closet for months, if not years. But while some people enjoy trying to come up with the best outfit, others might find it as fun as a headache, especially considering the limitations that come with the occasion in regards to the attire.

One of the most common ones is, of course, not wearing white. New York-based stylist Anny Choi told Vogue that it’s a no-go, “unless the invite calls for it”. She added that the same goes for cream, ivory, beige, and similar off-white shades, suggesting that it’s better to play it safe as not all brides go for a pearl white dress. “What a bride looks like today varies and can be so different,” Choi pointed out.

A fellow expert, stylist Micaela Erlanger, emphasized that bright colors should be avoided, too, unless specified otherwise. “Unless it is a wild disco party, avoid colors that really stand out,” she told Vogue. “Avoid neons, avoid red, avoid anything that’s super loud. Unless, of course, your friend’s getting married at a rave.”

In some countries, traditional bridal clothing includes bright colors and intricate patterns

In some countries, though, a pop of color is not only acceptable, but expected, too. In quite a few places around the world, the bride, or both of the soon-to-be-wed, choose colorful clothing for their big day.

BRIDES magazine pointed out that in China, for instance, brides often opt for red, as it symbolizes luck, happiness, and joy. Happy couples in Morocco and India also tend to wear something rather vibrant and colorful, typically adorned in intricate detail, too. In Peru, where celebrations usually take place for two days, the traditional bridal clothing entails bright colors and geometric patterns, as well as all sorts of decorative elements.

Even in the western world, where brides typically choose white as their go-to option, they might stick to the tradition of bearing something blue on the big day. Originating from the late 19th-century rhyme—”Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a sixpence in her shoe”—it encourages brides to add a blue detail, as the color reportedly symbolizes love, purity, and fidelity.

Whether or not Ciara had something blue on her during the wedding, she didn’t appreciate the OP wearing a blue sequin dress; but not because of its color. The bride was upset over the fact that the redditor chose a dress she wore to her own wedding, a decision that seemingly split the internet community into camps about it.

Some netizens didn’t think the OP was in the wrong here

Others sided with the redditor’s friend

Why would anyone say YTA? Everything's expensive these days. If this woman has a quality dress that fits the parameters of the occasion, there's no reason for her to waste money on another. This seems more like a power move on Bride's part to force her friend to spend money she doesn't have and then shame her when she didn't.

Imagine still being able to even fit your prom gown. That’s absolutely awesome. And very likely not the case for the nut job bride. Could be a source of resentment that would’ve made anything she chose to wear as precisely the wrong thing to wear on the brides appalling opinion.

I bought a $26 white summer dress one year. When my hubs an I decided hey let's get married at the court house to save money for a year to have a nice reception I wore it. I prob could dye it a diff color. It's tea length and lacy over poly but was fine for the court house and to wear to our reception at a private room at a restaurant. I wouldn't consider wearing it to any weddings but also haven't gone anywhere to need a white casual looking dress either. A prom dress can be reused. She likes it. Makes her feel special. Only issue I would have had was the color being close to her wedding parties colors. But that bride should have stfu about it an just enjoyed her day. Regardless if she had worn it to her own wedding. Sometimes a dress is a dress and ya gotta wear it to get your money from it.

What is wrong with those YTA people? OP already said that this is not only her wedding dress, it was her prom dress first. But honestly this sounds like the bridezilla tried to friend-test OP. Once is happenstance, two is a pattern, three is intentional. She knew three facts that told her exactly what OP is wearing on fancy occasions. One: She knew OP was not well off and couldn't even afford a new wedding dress. Two: She also knew that OP wore her fancy prom dress to all festive occasions since she couldn't afford another. Three: She knew OP's all occasions fancy dress is blue and choose a blue theme. And then she explodes when she sees that, surprise OP weas the only fancy dress she owns, always wears and which is blue? Oh come on, does anybody truly believe she didn't see that coming? My guess is, she tried one of those juvenile 'if you were a true friend you would/wouldn't do x' friendship tests where the other person can't know what the other wants but is expected to anyway
