Dolly Partons Imagination Library
Dolly Partons Imagination Library if you have a child younger than 5. The send an age appropriate book once a month. It's amazing! I have so many books for my daughter since I signed up and she loves getting them in the mail!
This is the best thing ever!!! My daughter LOVED getting free books each month! We then re-gift the books to schools in Oakland and overseas literacy programs.
Another good thing to do is put them in Little Free Libraries.
Load More Replies...Dolly Parton is the closest we have to a real life angel on this earth.
very weird where its available and where it isn't. Not in my postal code but, a friend who is a 10 minute drive away CAN get them. And we're both very close to a downtown/city area. strange.
Just another reason to love Dolly Parton, such a beautiful soul and human being.
seems like it isn't... i checked all the countries in area and there's no possibility to get them...
Load More Replies...I checked the web site and it is not available where we live. It will tell you after you punch in your address. Which I find this odd if they use US Postal Service. Oh well....
As another commenter said there has to be a local person/business to sponsor it, it's a bit like a franchise so depends on somebody in that particular area.
Load More Replies...Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg. Lots of free classic books.
Funily enough it is currently not available in Germany due to legal reasons.
I didnt use vpn just googled it. have normal acced. live in Rhineland.
Photopea
Photopea. It's a Photoshop clone that is completely free (unintrusive side banner ad, can be removed by a one time payment) and has all the basic features of Photoshop, using basically the same interface. If you're used to Photoshop and just need to get something quick done, there's nothing better out there. Best of all, it's completely contained within your browser. There's no installation, no local files, not even an account or sign in.
And there's also gimp, but not browser based. Without advertisements and completely free
Load More Replies...Another program called GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) is a free download, no adds bc it's open source, I use it for everything.
It's more limited, but I prefer paint.net. Lots of plugins are available to shore up its weaknesses.
I have used Photopea for 1-2 years now. It is fantastic! Completely free. Interestingly enough, yesterday I decided to support the maker with $40 for the premium version.
Khan Academy
Use Khan Academy for literally everything. It’s free knowledge that you can use to clep out of university courses, or to simply invest your time in a worthwhile topic. Free quality education is best education.
This website is insane. It is free and for the US common core subjects for grades K-12, has enough content to basically teach every course including exams. That means it has a whole child's life educational career covered in one place. So parents can use it to homeschool their kids.
It also has college level material as well. It's very helpful and insane that it's not used more widely in schools
Load More Replies...I downloaded Khan Academy Kids for my son to use. He loves it and he learns a lot from it.
I am in M5 going into DP1 (10th grade now, going into 11th for any non IB people) and I still use Khan Academy. it is super helpful!
It is free but it is also nice if people that can afford it would donate.
Skiplagged
Skiplagged for flights. It’s so good that United sued them and lost.
They essentially exploit the pricing manipulation that airlines use. Example, if you want to go from Phoenix to Atlanta, sometimes a ticket from Phoenix to Ft. Lauderdale connecting through Atlanta is cheaper. This website finds those flights for ya. Just don’t check in a bag!
Just be careful with this one. Airlines have sued them more than once and some have clauses in their small print that can cancel your entire trip without refund if they think you are involved in this.
That doesn't seem legal. "Your honor, but we thought the customer is involved so we stole their money without any evidence"
Load More Replies...Meh, just compared it to Southwest website. Southwest is cheaper and you don't have to worry about bag fees
If you want to go to Atlanta and your plane stops in Atlanta, you can get off the plan there. But there are some drawbacks, like a weather diversion can reroute your plane to skip Atlanta, or a mechanical problem may force the airline to rebook you on another flight that doesn't go through Atlant. And if you book a round trip, the airline could cancel your return leg when you don't show up for the Atlanta->Ft Lauderdale segment (I bet skiplagged books 2 one ways instead of a round trip). Airlines also say they can cancel your frequent flyer program, and some airlines have even sued passengers who do this.
Load More Replies...Scihub
Scihub. Endless Free college books
AND peer-reviewed scientific publications that are otherwise hidden behind a paywall!
It changes URLs more than some people change their underpants. You have to google it from time to time.
Load More Replies...The scientists actually get jack s**t except for exposure and one-time access for a 14-page paper can cost you up to £50 in my field. Elsevier and Springer can go get themselves f****d for all I care.
Load More Replies...You dont tho. Especially when publishing in scientific Journals where u actually have to pay to publish AND pay again to have access. So the ppl who did all the work and writing get nothing whether u use scihub or not.
Load More Replies...My 90s TV
My 90s TV.
This is more of a novelty website, but I think it's pretty cool and you can lose yourself for hours with nostalgia. It basically uses YouTube videos to simulate watching TV in 90s and you can specify what year you want and what categories you want to see when you change channels.
There is also a My 80s TV and a My 70s TV
Freecycle
Freecycle its litterly people giving away stuff they dont need/want any more that they can't/don't care enough to sell
I got a free upright piano in great condition from freecycle years ago - still the best find of my life!
I litterally just opened this and found something that my mom posted on it. lmao
I've used this in the U.K. both to give things away and get things other people were giving away. It's great that things don't go to waste which is better for the planet and better for those not having to spend money on things they can't afford, or don't have. The only downside for me is that people near here seem to be looking for expensive items or are super specific about what they are looking for... it's makes people look greedy a lot of the time.
I am another Panda who can vouch for Freecycle. Not only have I found some great things, I've been able to give away stuff that I don't need.
Archive
Archive has lots of old but free content. For example a lot of DOS games, directly playable through the browser.
This is probably the worst description of archive.org that I've seen so far. It's so much more than this!
Ahahhahah MS (Microsoft) DOS... Very basic operating system. Game gems that use to play on DOS, Prince of Persia and a lot of the arcade style games.
Load More Replies..."Launched in 1996, the Internet Archive is a non-profit organization with a stated mission of “universal access to all knowledge.” With this in mind, the organization provides free public access to digitized materials, including web pages, books, audio recordings, including live concerts, videos, images, and software programs. As of April 2021, it includes: 475 billion web pages 28 million books and texts 14 million audio recordings (including 220,000 live concerts) 6 million videos (including 2 million Television News programs) 3.5 million images 580,000 software programs Everything collected by the Internet Archive takes up more than 70 Petabytes of server space, including two copies of everything. The organization is funded through donations, grants, and fees from book digitization services. For privacy, the Internet Archive doesn’t keep track of the IP addresses of its readers and uses the HTTPS (secure) protocol throughout." groovypost.com
I use this all the time for historical research, lots of old books scanned on here too
It hosts the way the way back machine, a archive of internet websites. So if you find a dead link in the internet, you can enter that link at archive.org and the possibility is high you find a leat one snapshot of the original website.
Oregon Trail, people... it's on there and plays well if you have the processing power for it on your computer to run the side banner ads that run, constantly...
Can I play lemmings? I need to play lemmings.... or space quest, kings quest, etc
Gimp
GIMP, it’s a free version of photoshop.
It used have the exact same functions in the same menues in the early 2000s. In fact, I used a book about photoshop to learn Gimp.
Load More Replies...this is an awfull way to describe gimp. The GNU image manupulation program is not a " poor version" of photoshop, is a standalone opensource program .
Unsplash
Unsplash is where you can get free photos of just about anything, provided by the photographers themselves, to do with what you like.
Unsplash is fantastic, I use it for my website all the time (they are paired with Squarespace). Images are modern, interesting, professional and all they cost is a (voluntary) accreditation to the photographer if you're going to be using it publicly - unless you're using the image to represent a specific product you're selling in which case that's a whole different licensing rabbit hole which applies to all stock images
Duolingo
Duolingo I have been using this for quick Spanish lessons with my morning coffee for a couple years now. It doesn't override the need to take classes for college credits, but I recently had to take a course and it was a breeze. There are a few hundred languages that it teaches and the mobile app makes it easy to do anywhere while waiting.
**warning** only good for spanish, german, french, dutch, esperanto, and english. with anything else it gets very low-quality and short. (also it really doesn't outright teach you grammar or stuff for the lesser-travelled languages)
Imo it is quite bad for Dutch. Specially the audio
Load More Replies...Looks like you forgot you spanish lessons. You know what that means.
Load More Replies...Used to be good, but now you are punished severely for tiny mistakes and you can only do a few exercises a day.
Yea, I don't get that bs. Those new added feature made me stop using it after several years. I do not recommend this anymore.
Load More Replies...If you're trying to learn a langauge I don't recommend any classes. Half the people take them for YEARS, wasting hundreds of dollars, and barely make it past the basics. Hinative is pretty useful for that. You can ask native speakers questions and ask them to create sentences for you- really useful, if you ask me
Many people worldwide learn with classes! How are you supposed to find native people from the languages you want to learn? And who would want to create for you tons of sentences? You need some base at least! I don't know how you jumped to this conclusion about half the people honestly......
Load More Replies...Great for many languages and also FREE, am amazed how people love to find the negative edge to good things.
Duolingo is excellent for Latin. The trick is you have to study hard in a disciplined manner to learn any language. You will learn if: You spend AT LEAST 1/2 hour learning EVERY SINGLE DAY You repeat each sentence aloud, write them down in a notebook or online document, then review them regularly You use the word bank rather than the keyboard to answer questions so that you avoid typos that cause frustration and slow you down Duolingo is your learning coach; you are your own teacher.
1aauto
1aauto. It is a car parts supplier, but their videos show exactly what tools you need, what parts you need, and how to do a repair yourself. Great money saver if you don’t know much about mechanics. Someone I knew was going to get screwed by their mechanic (700 bucks for a water pump replacement). Showed them that, they did it themselves for 30 bucks. It makes it quicker too, knowing what tools you need ahead of time for your particular car.
Utter lifesaver of a site for simple fixes. Thanks to them, I know how to replace my own tail lights and swap out a car battery.
Their videos are generally spot on with one or two things left out. Would love to see them try some of the work with vehicle on jack stands. I dont have a hydraulic lift in my garage. Just saying.
Futureme
Futureme.
You can write letters to yourself (or other people) in the future! I personally love this type of self reflection and self support from my past self.
This way, I'll always have someone wishing me a happy birthday, even if it's just past me.
When I was 15 and couldn't get a girlfriend, I wrote 2 letters to my future wife and gave them to her on our wedding night.
Zotero
Maybe not everyone, but for students Zotero is a lifesaver. It will store your sources, import them to a bibliography in whatever citation style you need, and even create in-text citations in your paper. It saves hours of work.
Here is a tight hug to whoever added this.Know that you are appreciated and loved.
There are several free options, Mendeley, LaTex, etc. You can see all the options when you export a citation from a journal, they ask you which type of file you would want the citation in (plain text, BibTex, Mendeley, etc.)
Sometimes citing takes longer than writing the paper. I am saving this and giving it a try.
I've been using this for 3 years and it's fabulous. Makes it very easy to cite websites, books, tv programmes, and other things that other reference management software just can't seem to handle. The chrome plugin makes it even easier.
Camelcamelcamel
Camelcamelcamel is really nice to track online prices to help you get the best deal. Also Black Friday is a myth and the sales aren't good at all.
I have always suspected that only the most intellectually challenged people attend black Friday events. Falling over each other - in some cases even fighting - to buy something they don't really need for a higher price than it was at last week. Miss me on that.
"Black Friday" should be called "Black and Blue Friday" because of the chaos and violence. I steer clear of all retail on that day.
Load More Replies...This only tracks Amazon prices and often items are lowered but shipping is added and it kind of evens out. Still helpful tho!
Used CamelCamelCamel for years. If you want something but don't mind waiting a bit then you can save a good bit of money. You can see past prices and set alerts to get an email when the price drops below a threshold.
This site is awesome i just love it, ive been tracking the iphone x.
Openlearn
OpenLearn from the UK’s Open University - free courses for all levels of study, samples of university materials, study skills nd tie-ins to BBC documentaries. Everything under Creative Commons licence so you can use it as you see fit:
https://www.open.edu/openlearn/
I can't recommend this enough. I've studied science subjects with my home ed kids and took a beginners business course that really helped me. The courses tend to cycle so if you missed one it will be back around again soon.
If you like this, you would love Coursera...you can take virtual courses from top Universities in numerous countries; the USA, UK and Scotland...everything from Pet Behavior to Physics and beyond!! It's completely Free unless you want a Certificate of Completion from the school, when the course is completed, then I believe they charge $50 to provide that cert! I have taken numerous courses, in the last couple years and have found them challenging but rewarding!!
Library Genesis
Library Genesis, a great place to look for and download college/university textbooks for free, as well as other books.
You can also try emailing the author of the book and politely asking for an electronic copy. The publishing house gets 99% of the money from textbook sales, so the author might just give you a free one.
Waze And Google Maps
Google Maps and Waze are so useful if still blows my mind that they are free. Waze does have ads that show up when you are stopped but it's still free and had a lot of great features. They have slowly been moving the more popular features to Google Maps too like speed trap reports and current speed/speed limit.
I've been a Waze user for a couple of years and it's absolutely amazing. It gives traffic reports, speed camera alerts and all sorts of other cool things. Highly recommended as a sat-nav!
Same. I've had it for a number of years. Alerts me of obstacles in the road, nearby police, upcoming road accidents - very useful info from other drivers
Load More Replies...Last WAZE experience, it took us to it's preferred parking garage, not to our destination. Got very lost, almost missed the ferry. Furious.
Terms Of Service; Didn't Read
Terms of Service; Didn't Read.
A free site for people too lazy to read the entire ToS.
So people can't be bothered to read the terms of service, but they can be bothered to go onto thus website to read the terms of service. Hmm 🤔
Sometimes it’s not laziness. One site based in the U.K. was criticised for having t & c that were longer than Hamlet. Hamlet is Shakespeare’s longest play.
Heavens Above
Astronomer here! You can look up all the satellites flying over your house tonight, including the ISS, Hubble Space Telescope, those pesky Starlink satellites, and whatever else your heart desires, complete with star maps and precise timing. The website is called Heavens Above and there is an Android app, but unfortunately no iOS one last I checked. (For iOS I use “Sputnik!” which is free and tells me the ISS and Hubble passes overhead.)
It should be noted btw that many if not most of these objects are visible even in a city if on a good pass right above you. So out and see some cool stuff! :)
Astrophotographer here. There are several apps available - like Night Sky for example - that are far better than this. If you hold your phone to the sky the app tells you what you're looking at (or point it at the ground for a view from the other side of the planet). Zoom in with two fingers and tons of deep space stuff is revealed
Top Class Actions
Top Class Actions basically a site that lists active class action lawsuits you might qualify for. I've used it for trivial things like suing red bull for a free case because it "didn't give me wings" but on a serious note. It made me aware of the suit against Equifax for leaking my data. That should be a settlement worth over a $100. It's a cool way to hold corporations semi accountable, and score some money/freebies for any wrongdoing that went under the radar.
In the US if a company has broken the law, has not protected its customers ( like the data breach) or has a product that does not meet standards a class action lawsuit will be filed. I’m this type of suit anyone that has been effected by the company can sign up to be part of the suit so long as they provide supporting documentation. I’m most familiar with providing proof of purchase for a product. Once a settlement or ruling is set you will receive a portion of the money the company was forced to pay out. The larger the number of people in the class the smaller your payout.
Load More Replies...Thanks to Parmeisan, here is the English version: https://topclassactions.com/
Load More Replies...Free File
If you're in the USA and you earn less than a certain amount of money -- currently $69,000 -- you can use the same software to file your taxes for free.
The system is called Free File, and companies that sell you tax software are trying very hard to make it difficult to find. Don't let them.
So glad I live in a country where this happens automatically and I don't have to do anything except under certain circumstances
It's legit... It's literally from the US government
Load More Replies...During the Bush2.0 admin, they reformed the filing system aand when the bill was going through congress the tax filing and tax software companies (see link below for the full story) lobbied intensively, and a compromise was reached. Some tax software companies offer a free basic filing service as part of the agreement with Congress with certain caveats. To find them you need to dig through the irs site but there are around 15-20 options. It's such a scam though because it's Congress catering to business instead of the people. In many northern European countries you can file your taxes by sms (text). But Americans are the mostest free-est people in the world - nay universe- so I guess it's worth it. https://www.propublica.org/article/inside-turbotax-20-year-fight-to-stop-americans-from-filing-their-taxes-for-free
sometimes yes. But it depends on how much you make, if you go to a CPA, etc.
Load More Replies...So... In the UK your tax is all done for you by the government. If they take too much, you get a nice letter saying as much and nice rebate. Too little and they spread out the repayment over several months so as not to disrupt your financial situation.
So this is like US Elster, except worse because you are only allowed to use it if you are earning not so much? *shrugs* Good anyway, I guess
Here is Canadian version: https://turbotax.intuit.ca/tax/software/personal/online/free
I didn't downvote you, but just so you know, Intuit 1) is a terrible terrible company and 2) will sometimes let you fill out your return but not let you file it without payment (I think it depends on how much you earn, how many returns are in your family, or something). There are alternate free programs which are trustworthy, just as simple as TurboTax, and still hook into CRA. I only switched from TurboTax recently so I've only tried one, but I used WealthSimple this last time and I was quite happy with it.
Load More Replies...Most tax filing services like TurboTax offer free filing for federal taxes on the EZ form. Credit Karma has a free program for 1040 filing, but it's really best for if your taxes aren't too complicated.
Load More Replies...Melody Ml
I recently found this
melody.ml.
Use it. I swear.
U can isolate vocals, drums, bass from mp3. Files You'll need an email address to download the isolated files
there are a few sites that do this e.g. https://vocalremover.org/ which is more convenient to use . They use all use the spleeter engine which you can download and modify yourself https://github.com/deezer/spleeter
I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but 'ML' is the Library of Congress cataloging prefix for music literature.
Can it separate voices from background noise? I need something for that so if anyone knows, please let me know. I'm a bit of a technophobe so it must be simple to use... The recorder I use is an app on my phone
Blender
Just started using Blender, an open source video editor and animation tool. Good for making YouTube videos.
When I tried it, I found it quite difficult to use as well.
Load More Replies...Listing Blender as a video editor and animation tool is leaving out a lot of functionality. "Blender is the free and open source 3D creation suite. It supports the entirety of the 3D pipeline—modeling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and motion tracking, video editing and 2D animation pipeline."
My daughter used this and it helped her to get into college for Engineering and 3D animation. Really good stuff for learning to create 3D images for beginners.
Blender rocks! What's important is not the fact that it's free, it's that it proves that Open Source and sharing drives progress by far more efficiently than patents and proprietary apps.
This really shouldn't be listed as a video editor. This is an amazing free 3d modeling, rendering, and animation software for creating 3d images and assets for games, movies, photos, etc.
Blender is AMAZING!!! You can create some fantastic realistic 2D images as well. Breakfast-...ee-png.jpg
Flightradar24
Flightradar24.
It allows you to see plane traffic live
And to look up the [sometimes] interesting history of the aircraft you'll be flying on. I once flew on United Airline's oldest aircraft then in service, a 29 year old, MD-80.
that truly is interesting, but at the same time worrying! 1.) United 2.) MD80 3.) Oldest in service As an aviation enthusiast, I think you should get a medal for that ;-) (That really IS cool!)
Load More Replies...During the northern California fires, this was how we followed the flights of fire-fighting aircraft in real time.
Codecademy
Codecademy is an awesome site to learn how to use some programming languages. Doesn't get into the really advanced stuff, but it's good for a start.
I like it. I learned a lot quickly and use what i learned³ all the time. Light html skills are useful and impress employers
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!! please don't use this. use something better, and more hands on like freecodecamp, or excersism. just pleaaase not this.
I'd rather just pay 10 bucks for a Udemy course; they're always having sales. I was not impressed with Codecademy.
Thenounproject
Thenounproject has a wide selection of icons. I use them for presentations!
Nexus Mods
Nexus mods.
Nexus mods has thousands of video game mods, made by independent content creators, available to download at no cost.
I recently downloaded a bunch of mods for a new Fallout 3 playthrough from nexus! The game still crashes every 15 minutes but damn it’s still soo good.
The Anki Flashcard
The anki flashcard app for laptops is really dope for committing things to long-term memory and is free
I can get behind anki. It helped me memorize 6-8 pages of material in a month
So I opened the site, it sounded cool... until i saw LaTeX... then it was nope, not going down that rabbit hole.... close tab
You don't need LaTeX to use it or even to create your own cards. It supports LaTeX if you want to create cards with scientific notation, but otherwise no reason to think about that rabbit hole 🙂

Nobaproject
Nobaproject. It's a website that has compiled Psychology topics into easy to read modules. They have been compiled by psychology university professors to help facilitate free education for students. You can even download the ones you're interested as a PDF as many times as you want. All of this is free!

same as bored panda, but yes i agree

this comment is sponsored by honey. use code BOREDPANDA for an extra 10% off.
How could anyone not know about this? I get their ads on every other damn video on youtube. It's got to the point I wouldn't use honey simply due to how annoying as hell their ads are...
Honey gives an immediate savings, Rakuten gives cash back. Choose your weapon.

Wanna know if that pic on the front page of reddit is photoshopped?
Takes some skill to learn how to use but they have tutorials on the site.
"Wanna know if that pic....is photoshopped?" The answer is yes. Always
Atlasquest, Libby, Dhamma
Last time this was posted, I learned about Letterboxing (fun, free, outdoor activity - AtlasQuest), Libby (Free library audiobooks and ebooks - get it in the app store) and free meditation retreats (dhamma). I'm definitely saving this post.
get the geocaching app it is free. It has a premium that you can pay for but you can still find lots on the basic level.
Libby is awesome, but I believe you need a library card to access it. Still, it is awesome. I use it all the time lol.
Ninite
Ninite. One place to select what you want installed, without all the hassle. I use it for freshly formatted PC's to reinstall everything.
ok so this is a *very* mixed bag. this is ONLY for windows users, and it has a very small subset of applications. this is not a good idea for large corporations, where it would be easier to use a .bat script or something similar.
I think it might not be aimed at "large corporations"

Load More Replies...I have some websites of my own that I like to use: Befunky.com is a very helpful photo editor I use. Not quite photoshop, but it's handy. Studentuk.com is a good place to go if you need a classic story or a bedtime story. Aggie.io is a wonderful collaborative drawing site that I love to use and make a lot of art on. If you give someone the link to a drawing you made on there while you're still on and they join, you'll be able to talk to them and see their icon for the site (as well as username for the site). :3
Oh, also, how could I forget! Sculptfab is pretty good for people just starting their 3D rendering career. I use it sometimes and try to make small and somewhat simple 3D objects, which you can then post to Sketchfab (their main site) or something. And everything I've listed is free.
Load More Replies...Pixlr.com is also a pretty decent alternative to photoshop that's totally free. It's not as in depth but it's pretty easy to use. (I, for some reason, didn't like using gimp) Then there's "Doesthedogdie.com" which can tell you if a triggering scenario happens in a movie or show you are thinking of watching. Be that a dog dying, or a great number of other scenarios, such as if there is a suicide in the film or sexual assault, etc.
Oh that's a good resource, the doggie one. I spent the first couple episodes of The Queen's Gambit worried about what was going to happen to that little orphan girl.
Load More Replies...Another good resource in many cities here in the US, and I'm sure in many other countries, is your local public library website. With my local library membership, I can get access to not only ebooks, audio books, videos, and music, but courses for adults and children (including test prep for high school equivalency, college entrance, citizenship), a tutoring service with live tutors, academic journals, legal library, local and state history resources. There's really too much to list. Many of our resources are also multi-lingual. I'm sure some local libraries are more extensive than others since so much depends on local support, but you may be surprised by what your local library can provide online.
Where is stackoverflow.com? The single greatest resource for all IT people.
Anyone who writes code needs to bookmark Stackoverflow.
Load More Replies...Hinative.com is pretty good if you're thinking of learning a language. You can ask native speakers questions, ask them to make sentences, correct your sentences, pronunciation, etc. It's free and your questions will be answered within a few minutes. There's also 101Languages which is a company that owns a bunch of langauge learning websites like spanishpod101, Japanesepod101, frenchpod101, Thaipod101 and more. It's not free but you can take a free premium trial for 7 days with no credit card AND delete your account out of the system whenever you feel like *wink wink*
It's all about Open Source Vs Closed Source software. Don't buy OS that rules your life, adopt a penguin. Linux sets you free.

Oh, also, how could I forget! Sculptfab is pretty good for people just starting their 3D rendering career. I use it sometimes and try to make small and somewhat simple 3D objects, which you can then post to Sketchfab (their main site) or something. And everything I've listed is free.
