Warning: this article might inspire you to pursue a career in genetics or to become a scientist. The world of genetics is fascinating, to say the least. It can make you feel like you’re living in a sci-fi book, instead of on Planet Earth, and there are plenty of examples that make us go, “Wow, I can’t believe this is real!”

Our team here at Bored Panda has put together this fascinating list of people who were born different from the rest. From small and subtle differences to larger ones that everyone would notice passing you by on the street, here are some of the most unusual examples of genetics at work. As you’re scrolling down this list, upvote the photos that intrigued you the most. And if you’ve got any entrancing tales about genetics in your family to tell all the other Pandas, we invite you to do so in the comment section.

Intrigued by Mother Nature and in the mood for some more examples of unusual genetics? You’ll find them in Bored Panda’s previous two articles on the topic right here and here.

Even though the cases in this list are visually stunning and some might even be classified as ‘cool,’ unfortunately, genetics can also make it more likely that you develop diseases, including certain cancers. For example, 5 to 10 percent of all breast cancers are thought to be hereditary and caused by abnormal genes passed down from parent to child. Bored Panda reached out to experts in the field to tell us more about this.

Sectional Heterochromia! My Oma has that, which gave me Central Heterochromia (Basically all the colors in one, with streaks of green, blue, gold, red, and other colors)

Amina Ependieva Has Two Rare Genetic Conditions: Albinism And Heterochromia

The former is a condition that reduces the amount of melanin pigment in the skin, eyes, hair, while the latter is a difference in coloration of the iris. The two conditions together make this young girl extremely unique.

Bored Panda reached out to the team at the UK-based Breast Cancer Now charity to learn more about this disease, the symptoms, the reasons why someone might develop it, and how to reduce the risks.

“There are many different risk factors for developing breast cancer, some of which we can’t control, like being female, getting older, and for some people, a family history of the disease. There is never one single cause of breast cancer, but rather it results from a combination of our genes, the surrounding environment, and the way we live our lives,” a representative of Breast Cancer Now explained to Bored Panda.

I have vitiligo. When it started my mom was worried so she took me to the most renowned dermatologist (Guatemala) . He told us it was impossible to cure it and prescribed some dangerous medicines. Afterwards we went for a second opinion with a less known and very much cheaper dermatologist that actually took his time to study my skin. He biopsed my skin, did some weird things, cut me off from the previous medicine and prescribed a really cheap petroleum I had to put on my skin and sunbathe for 10 minutes every day at 10 am. Quickly the vitiligo stopped spreading and it actually started shrinking. I was actually very proud of my vitiligo so I stopped the treatment. I wanted to sport my discoloration and I am still sporting it ( I am 35) . I guess what I am trying to say is that vitiligo is not such a bad thing and that if you really do want to stop it there is treatment that works, look for alternatives and second opinions.

“There are things you can do to help to reduce your risk such as drinking less alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, and keeping physically active. Even the small changes like walking more or cutting down on processed foods can be a great start,” they said that there are lots of small lifestyle changes that can reduce the risks. Even though we can’t control everything, we can control some things.

Breast Cancer Now explained that breast cancer is the most common cancer in the United Kingdom. Around 55k women and 370 men get diagnosed with the disease each year. “1 in 7 women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and 8 out of 10 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women aged 50 and over,” the representative told Bored Panda.

My family has weird inheritable eyebrows. My mom's dad and all his ancestors have giant wooly catepillars with one long hair on the end that likes to run perpendicular. My mom's mom and all her ancestors have these little 1/2" eyebrows that look like the rest were plucked out. My brother got grandpa's and I got grandma's. Mom says between the two of us, we'd make one good pair.

No, that would be a bad omen, don't you think? Anyway, probably the fantasy books with the most disappointing ending I have ever read - four volumes of building the idea that the enemy is invincible and then "Really? That's it? That's was all it took?" Ruined it for me.

According to Breast Cancer Now, checking your breasts for lumps or swellings is very simple and you can remember what to do by using the acronym TLC: Touch, Look, Check.

“It could be when you get dressed, or when you’re in the bath or shower or putting on moisturizer—just as long as you do it regularly and remember to check the whole breast and the surrounding area, including the upper chest and armpits. Most cases of breast cancer are found by women noticing unusual changes, taking the initiative, and visiting their doctor.”

This will probably cause big problems in the future if it haven't already. Peoples faith in technology, bureaucracy and collection of information will probably make it so that it will require a fingerprint in the future for alot of daily small things, like opening your phone (at the point where it's no longer optional) etc..

It could just be another marfanoid form or just a marfanoid profile without the other health issues for this man, i hope. I have some kind of marfanoid traits (arachnodactyly, long arms and hands..., a friend used to call me "roswell" for it), but i'm short, it's Ehlers Danlos Syndrom for me but you can also just have a marfanoid structure without the actual syndrom.

Taylor Muhl Has A Rare Genetic Condition Called, Chimerism. She Is “Her Own Twin”

Taylor Muhl Has A Rare Genetic Condition Called, Chimerism. She Is “Her Own Twin”

I have two sets of DNA, two sets of blood and immune cells. The two colors of skin pigmentation on my torso is from my and my twin's two different genetic makeups. My particular case of Chimerism is linked to autoimmune disease.

I went undiagnosed for more than half my life due to the rarity of my condition. I’m now an advocate for Chimerism, it’s link to autoimmune disease and body positivity. My hope is to prevent others from going undiagnosed how I did.

There was a case like this (Chimerism) on one of those medical shows where a set of parents had to take DNA tests for some reason or another to prove they were the biological parents of their kids. The dad came back a match and the mom didn't, so they were super confused cause how does that even happen? Turns out she had Chimerism and her ovaries were technically her twins'. Her name is Lydia Fairchild if this fascinates anyone else as much as it does me.

I was fascinated by that case too because she was so vulnerable and everyone thought DNA tests were absolute. She was charged with welfare fraud because of the DNA mismatch. Interestingly the prosecutors, not defense, discovered her chimerism and thus dropped the charges.

Our family doc told my folks to always have me in a life jacket. That if I sunk into colder water from a boating accident, this allergy would put me into shock while they are trying to save me. Me and my "cold hives" were such an oddity back in the late 60s when I was growing up. It's interesting to learn that it isn't too crazy.

I have this condition and unless there is a problem with the bones being fused or the venal supply being interrupted there are no reasons to separate them. I was asked if I wanted them separated the last time I had surgery on my feet (unrelated problem) but I said no. After 52 years of having them joined together I think it would now feel weird to have them separated. My only problem was that I could never wear toe socks.

My facial hair is really black, but my mustache is way more blond. My hair is like dark blond, but it naturally changed during my life. I born with it black, it was really light blonde during childhood, become darker again after my 10y reaching a brown in my late teenage, a brown going to red at 20 and now is a medium blond.

My dad had something similar. His chinpatch was more orangy while the rest of his beard was a more reddish hue like this guy. When he started going gray, the orangy patch never changed and he looked like a comicbook hero. I hope this guy gets that too.

Yes, VERY true but unless you wear sunscreen, gloves, long sleeves and a sun hat every single time you step outside, it's inevitable that some part of your upper body is going to be exposed. And I'd like to think that most of us who have vitiligo understand that. =) I wish there was more research about this condition.

I deal with the same condition. It's one thing to shade your face in the summer so it doesn't show up as bad. But unless you're willing to cover your arms and hands, it's going to show up lots more. Also, just for the record, those with vitiligo can also experience darker than normal patches where the melanin dumps outside of a melaninless patch.

Depends on the situation. If it won't give any problems, there's no need to remove them. But I had a baby tooth removed at 18 years old because the adult tooth started to grow behind it, and the baby tooth didn't fall out. I had it removed too late, and now the adult tooth is pointed inwards too much. It doesn't bother me that much, so I never got it corrected. I can eat just fine

My upper canines were like this. Had them removed in middle school when my dentist took an xray to see what was up and turn out my adult teeth were sitting sideways instead of pointing down so they didnt push through. Said if we didnt fix it there was a chance they could push in towards my brain. Had a really goofy smile for a while there since without them my 4 center teeth spread out. Also, when they went to remove my wisdom teeth they discovered I was missing 1 of my uppers. I only had 3.

A friend's grandad had two functional thumbs on one hand. In later life, a doctor said he could have one removed, but the grandad refused, as he found it very useful.

Is it functional? You really should learn to play piano, then you can play that song in Gattaca that can supposedly only be played by 6-fingered pianists! LIFE GOALS

That is lanugo hair. Throughout the pregnancy, babies grow and develop in a sac filled with amniotic fluid. This protective fluid cushions the baby. A baby’s skin is covered with a waxy, cheese-like substance called vernix, which protects the skin from amniotic fluid. Vernix prevents a baby’s skin from chaffing in the womb. Lanugo helps protect the skin and makes it easier for vernix to adhere to a baby’s skin. Once a baby sheds lanugo hair — either in the womb or outside the womb — the hair usually never returns. The only exception is in cases of severe malnutrition.

Playing left-handed would be advantageous. Five fingers on the fret hand, and the pinky is so rarely used in picking it would hardly, if at all, be missed.

My mom had it. I have it. It's very painful. I need to be very careful and very fast if I'm shopping in the freezer section. No rifling through to check things out. See what you want. Grab it and throw it in the basket very quickly. Even then, the ends of my fingers turn white and hurt for a number of minutes. I wear warm gloves, even in the early fall to late spring. If very severe you can actually need to have fingers or toes amputated due to lack of blood flow.

I have this as well. My legs turn purple in temps below 70° and really dark purple in temps below 60°. My fingers have gotten much worse since I now have carpal tunnel, and I not only wear serious winter gloves in any season but summer, I have to wear warm gloves to bed too. Otherwise, they not only go white and red, but completely and very painfully numb. It takes over 30 minutes in front of a heater or under hot water to get them back to normal if I forget to wear them.

As soon as I get slightly heated up water starts running down my face and my hair turns wet. After a workout one could think I had just stepped out of the shower. In summer, I just keep one of these really small towels in my handbag for drying my face off. I put some drops of essential orange oil on it - feels really good and lifts my mood immediately! Maybe you would like to try that?

I have a phobia of my hands getting wet long enough that they get wrinkly - genuinely - I cannot handle my hands being wet (I do not know what it's called but it causes huge panic attacks) for no real reason. If my hands were wet this constantly I don't know what I'd do. Does it make you feel uncomfortable or are you used to it? I apologise for my uncomfortability.

I do have the same condition but not as serious. I was told that botox doesn't work that well on hands but was recommended ionophoresis for it.

I think we only have 3 snakes here, a slow worm is a legless lizard not a snake IIRC.

It does hurt. I have the same thing. There are eyelashes that have to be tweezed occasionally because they grow at weird angles and they scratch. You get used to it, and there are benefits. When you wear mascara, you look AMAZING.

Yes, but odds are the cops will think their full prints are just "partial prints", so as long as they don't get fingerprinted by the police they'd still have a pretty great advantage.

If anyone is curious, I was born missing a bone in my left thumb so I had no control over it. It would literally flop around. I don’t fully understand it but the surgeon used parts of my finger and thumb to make what I currently have! I can’t bend it in the same way as most can but it’s still very functional :)"

Normally these aren't very noticeable, but the one on my forearm grew on my growth plate, causing the bone to grow in the opposite direction.

I went to school with a girl who had been born with something very similar, except her extra thumb tip dropped off or had been surgically removed. She had a weird dent left where it had been.

My dad & I have that on our left hands! It's called a single palmar crease or simian's crease. I was once reading a book on palm reading & there was a picture of a hand with the single crease along with a passage that said "BEWARE HE WITH THE SINGLE ANGRY SLASH ACROSS HIS PALM!" It made me feel pretty badass, lol

You have lovely hands. I used to have long slender fingers like this before early onset Rheumatoid Arthritis 11 years ago. I'd do anything to see them look this way again. I used to get teased because my ring size was 4 1/2. Its now 6 1/2.
