500 years of dominating the classical charts has already established that; can't see how that's flying in the face of public opinion.

People Online Share Unpopular Opinions On Musicians, Genres, And The Industry, So Here’re 30 Spot-On Ones Elton John doesn't get anywhere near the credit he deserves as an all time great. He should be discussed as a Top 5 solo career all time with only Elvis and MJ really being clear cut above him. But no one ever even brings him up in those discussions. I've never seen anyone able to write a coherent and borderline hit level song as quickly as Elton. Give him a sheet of words, they don't even have to be lyrics, and you'll have a hit in 5 minutes. If you don't believe me search "Elton John oven manual song" on YouTube.

I believe what this means is that the past two decades have been more so like this compared to the past? I don't know, that's questionable. Controversy sells, it's been like this for ages.

I agree with you but I’d also add that prior to auto tune and digitalizing everything, the pick still had to be from at least semi-talented folks who were also controversial and hopefully good looking. Now we can just take marginally well known people with good looks who are also controversial and make them a whole singing career. It’s a subtle difference but it’s there.

I mean... we can argue it was just as prevalent in the 80s, don't get me wrong... love me some 80s music but it was all about who could wear the tighter pants, the more hairspray, act the most outrageous on stage... for every talented 80s musician there were at least 3 mediocre or even bad ones.

The last time the charts were full of people who got there on merit, playing popular original music WAS the 80s! That whole OTT thing was what the 80s was all about.

Eras of consumerism and capitalist expansion say the pop of the 80's and the last twenty years seem to coincide with a marketing first attitude. The era of 90's indie / grunge bands and early rap were real outliers. Whether you did or did not like the music, those acts were not the easiest to package and sell.

Well, that's what you get when corporate execs make music instead of artists. They know it'll sell because their research and development accurately delineated the lemming demographic. 90% of the music industry is just a popularity contest.

The whole elevator thing with Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Her sister (I know the name but cannot for the life of me spell it). It looked so fake and staged at the time but it went round the world like a wildfire. And funnily enough relaunched her sisters career, was right before B’s new album came out. It still bugs me now when her sister is referenced alongside the fight. Am I the only one that thought it was a PR stunt?

I really doubt it was a PR stunt as no one came away from it looking good, Jay-Z was mocked for being the gangster pimp that got beaten up by a woman, Beyonce's whole super wife persona was shattered and Solange just looked crazy. I think fans saw cracks in their marriage for the first time which they had spent so much time presenting as an example for fans to follow.

People Online Share Unpopular Opinions On Musicians, Genres, And The Industry, So Here’re 30 Spot-On Ones Mariah Carey is in fact a musical genius.

What I mean is that for a singer with that kind of voice to have written, co-arranged, and co-produced 95% of her own material is pretty incredible, especially when you take into consideration the way her vocals are layered, her knack for engineering her own vocal climaxes and the way she weaves in different flourishes in each register. Its like she’s paints a canvas with her voice. I simply don't hear as many artists fill an entire song with a range of vocalizations the way she does despite the trashy diva image which I suppose turns most people off.

Taylor Swift can carry a tune but she isn't incredible, yet she really puts on a show and is a great songwriter. I don't really care if an artist autotunes or edits the sound of their voice, especially if it works with the song. Can't sing or play instruments but youve got Garageband and Autotune DOWN? Cool. You can still make good music in my eyes.

People Online Share Unpopular Opinions On Musicians, Genres, And The Industry, So Here’re 30 Spot-On Ones Huey Lewis and the News. Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.

People Online Share Unpopular Opinions On Musicians, Genres, And The Industry, So Here’re 30 Spot-On Ones Music piracy made music better.

Money as a motivation to make music was basically removed from the equation. Nowadays, the people who make music do so mostly because they're artists. Loads of musicians these days are compelled to create to express themselves, because making music is in their soul, not to pander to an audience and make cash.

Obviously this doesn't apply to mainstream music. Luckily for all of us with Spotify, it's now super easy to ignore trashy mainstream nonsense, dig deep and find some real gems.
