Food packaging waste equals to about one-third of all trash, costing governments billions of dollars each year in disposal expenses. Bored Panda has collected a set of images, proving this huge plastic waste contributor to the global waste crisis could be reduced significantly.
Product packaging solutions often become the subjects of heated debates. While the eco-minded consumers want it to be as minimal as possible (meaning fully recyclable), manufacturers often fire back that they don't want their products to start decomposing in the store or become an easy target to shoplifters and put many layers of wasteful and entirely unnecessary plastic wrapping. And while some of their arguments have reasons behind them, a lot of the time the amount of plastic wrap is needlessly excessive. Do we need a pill to be wrapped in three layers of plastic? Or, better yet, casings for coke cans?
Now, we do agree that a zero waste life can be quite challenging to lead sometimes, but it is something we should all aspire to if we don't want to evacuate from our planet Earth in the near future.

whilst this certainly seems is a complete waste of packaging for most, there are a lot of peole out there with chronic arthritis and other disablilities that makes peeling fruit either incredibly difficult, extremely painful or both. Opening a small plastic tub is nothing compared to peeling an orange, so this sort of thing is a God-send for them.

Yep! A work friend bought one of these at an airport. She shared the little packets out to everyone at work. I hate the idea of plastic waste but i thought it was a cute little gift. Not quite the same as wrapping peeled fruit in plastic.

Those are actually used in most function rooms for corporate meetings. They give you a notepad, pen, water and minties (in this case, tic-tac). I'm not a big fan of plastic packaging, especially hard plastic but I do see the purpose for those.

People are pigs. Often when you buy bananas they look like they've been through the wars because they've been manhandled by so many slobs. It's also a way to sell overripe or overly green bananas. If they come packaged, people won't be able to take them off the bunches and leave them behind. ... I still think it's ridiculous, but I can see where they're coming from.

This is quite common for luxury fruits in Japan which is often given as a present (since other types of presents take too much space in one’s home). Remeber the whole square watermelon thing? While the rest of the world giggles a bit, I can tell you these fruits are absolutely perfect i every way. I’ve never seen or tasted more consistently perfect fruit.

This might be used to not confuse the people handling the shipment. An empty pallet could look like the cargo is missing or the pallet might disappear and become one of all the other pallets at a warehouse (I work in logistics). This way it's clear that the pallet is the shipment. But it still looks silly.

the point? it's the lead, however, it's not actually lead its more graphite mixed with some other things, but it gives the same effect. A standard pencil would write for about 35miles, but I mean, who has ever needed to draw a line that long? a marathon is only 26.219 miles long, it used to be 26, but the royal family were sitting beyond the finish line, and insisted the winners cross the line past them, so they moved the finish line. anyway, I'm rambling, how are you?

All PET drinks come in packages like this. They are used for storage and carrying around to shops. In my country, they are on ALL PETs in the stores (in case you wish to buy bulk, instead of just one - also for easy carrying). That plastic allows for stacking. You can grab it and carry the whole thing (Trust me, it's tough plastic). And 100% recyclable.

This is needed for warehouse storage -> see square watermelon to get an idea. Some of these are stupid. Others, not so much. Stop blaming packaging and just recycle! I blame non-recyclables (like mixed plastic and paper)and poor education far more than useless packaging. Just saying.

Most of these, I agree, too much packaging or wrapping, however, the individually wrapped candies, I don't see nothing wrong. Especially when you have candies out for people like in offices, I don't wanna eat candy that have been touched by kids or other ppls hands. So, that one I agree.

Thank God, most of this insanity can't be found in my country, because due to a recycling law you can leaver outer packaging in the stores. I have no idea why people even by this. Plastic often contains BPS and to make sure a banana or acocado doesnt brown, it'll be treated with something. So eat something that is even more laden with chemicals than 'just' the usual pesticides.

I wonder if a lot of the peeled and packaged fruits are to prevent food waste. A lot of how people buy food is based on how it looks. Maybe the companies are taking the fruits that don't look so good and processing them in the hopes people will purchase them instead of letting them go to waste because they have a blemish or a bruise.

You are right in many ways. I used to work produce at a store and we used to "process" the not so good looking fruit into these convenience packaging so we could sell the fruit that was bruised and wouldn't sell whole. TBH the store made more money that way.

Here in the UK we get fined if we don't recycle the right thing in the right bin. I would like to see company's that over package with plastic to be fined and not the end user who has to do actual work and then gets the blame if it isn't right. On the other hand I haven't seen such crazy packaging here either, I think people would go apeshit and the 'newspapers' would have a field day. Also you can unwrap stuff like that at the till and leave it in the shop. However, it's disgusting.

This thread actually made me so sad and angry that I couldn't even finish reading it. It's high time that any company that produces or sells such ridiculously wastefully packaged products starts getting heavily fined. It gets frustrating that the blame is constantly put onto the consumer to be more responsible for their carbon footprint - the recycle! recycle! recycle! warnings. Yes - the consumer can take some responsibility for what they buy - but this kind of wasteful packaging s**t should simply not be allowed, by law. The little bit of domestic recycling we do as individuals is one small step forwards against 100 massive steps back when you see that this kind of insanity still goes on now. Global warming? Pah! We'll worry about that another time. Don't forget to bubblewrap each individual grape on that bunch !

And also, we have cucumbers wrapped in plastic in Germany, there are those people thats squish at least a dozen fruit or veggies before they finally choose one. Thats is all consumer related. As someone who used to work the produce in a grocery store I can kind of understand some of that. 1) individually wrapping the produce while wasteful in one way prevents those crazy customers from peeling open a fruit to see how good it is and putting it back in the pile to now rot while they pick some of the un opened fruit 2) what most stores don't tell you is that fresh cut up fruit is not really all that fresh, most times stores will take the whole fruit say watermelon, Cantaloupe, even apples and grapes among others cut them up removing the bad parts and then slicing up the parts that are still good and selling them as convenience (or in some cases fresh fruit salad!) 3) the individual bananas again this is because some customers do not know how to pull apart bananas without pulling the peel from other bananas thus ruining the fruit they don't want... which is probably why you have the packaged unpeeled bananas. Now the individual potatoes I have no idea why!

All of these packages more work, more material, and more time. All of which cost companies money. I'd be curious to see the rational behind these decisions. I suspect some, such as amazon's big box for little things, are to simply save time. I wouldn't be surprised if some was also over-regulation.

Been there done that and during my chemo there's no way I could have filled an orange so this would have been quite handy for me especially since I lived alone and went through the entire process alone. Oh god, I want to weep. I worried the UK needed improvement, but Christ almighty! And the ludicrous thing is, this prep and packaging will hike the price up, yet people are still willing to pay more, as well as trash the planet. For something that won't stay fresh once opened. But I once met a guy from California who was really surprised we don't wrap all our restaurant cutlery in packaging to demonstrate it's clean. Have to admit, didn't encounter than when in California myself, but it does make you wonder. We cannot sanitise the world!!

Thank God, most of this insanity can't be found in my country, because due to a recycling law you can leaver outer packaging in the stores. I have no idea why people even by this. Plastic often contains BPS and to make sure a banana or acocado doesnt brown, it'll be treated with something. So eat something that is even more laden with chemicals than 'just' the usual pesticides.

Before anyone starts railing against waste, please remember that things like pre-peeled fruit are really useful for disabled people.

Maybe but this is a small minority of people who have these difficulties. It doesn't mean everything should be packaged liked this.

I wonder if a lot of the peeled and packaged fruits are to prevent food waste. A lot of how people buy food is based on how it looks. Maybe the companies are taking the fruits that don't look so good and processing them in the hopes people will purchase them instead of letting them go to waste because they have a blemish or a bruise.

You are right in many ways. I used to work produce at a store and we used to "process" the not so good looking fruit into these convenience packaging so we could sell the fruit that was bruised and wouldn't sell whole. TBH the store made more money that way.

Here in the UK we get fined if we don't recycle the right thing in the right bin. I would like to see company's that over package with plastic to be fined and not the end user who has to do actual work and then gets the blame if it isn't right. On the other hand I haven't seen such crazy packaging here either, I think people would go apeshit and the 'newspapers' would have a field day. Also you can unwrap stuff like that at the till and leave it in the shop. However, it's disgusting.

This thread actually made me so sad and angry that I couldn't even finish reading it. It's high time that any company that produces or sells such ridiculously wastefully packaged products starts getting heavily fined. It gets frustrating that the blame is constantly put onto the consumer to be more responsible for their carbon footprint - the recycle! recycle! recycle! warnings. Yes - the consumer can take some responsibility for what they buy - but this kind of wasteful packaging s**t should simply not be allowed, by law. The little bit of domestic recycling we do as individuals is one small step forwards against 100 massive steps back when you see that this kind of insanity still goes on now. Global warming? Pah! We'll worry about that another time. Don't forget to bubblewrap each individual grape on that bunch !

Well many of those packs are anti-theft packs like the USB or SD card ones. And also, we have cucumbers wrapped in plastic in Germany, there are those people thats squish at least a dozen fruit or veggies before they finally choose one. Thats is all consumer related. Also, Amazon, are you serious? Self made problems, buy local.

As someone who used to work the produce in a grocery store I can kind of understand some of that. 1) individually wrapping the produce while wasteful in one way prevents those crazy customers from peeling open a fruit to see how good it is and putting it back in the pile to now rot while they pick some of the un opened fruit 2) what most stores don't tell you is that fresh cut up fruit is not really all that fresh, most times stores will take the whole fruit say watermelon, Cantaloupe, even apples and grapes among others cut them up removing the bad parts and then slicing up the parts that are still good and selling them as convenience (or in some cases fresh fruit salad!) 3) the individual bananas again this is because some customers do not know how to pull apart bananas without pulling the peel from other bananas thus ruining the fruit they don't want... which is probably why you have the packaged unpeeled bananas. Now the individual potatoes I have no idea why!

All of these packages more work, more material, and more time. All of which cost companies money. I'd be curious to see the rational behind these decisions. I suspect some, such as amazon's big box for little things, are to simply save time. I wouldn't be surprised if some was also over-regulation.

Well honey sometimes people can't peel an orange because of arthritis or chemo. Been there done that and during my chemo there's no way I could have filled an orange so this would have been quite handy for me especially since I lived alone and went through the entire process alone. Does that explain it to you sweetheart?

A lot of these seem to be Amazon sucking at packaging. Maybe if Amazon paid their employees better they would care to pay attention to how they package socks, but then Jeff Bezos might have SLIGHTLY less money.

Oh god, I want to weep. I worried the UK needed improvement, but Christ almighty! And the ludicrous thing is, this prep and packaging will hike the price up, yet people are still willing to pay more, as well as trash the planet. For something that won't stay fresh once opened. But I once met a guy from California who was really surprised we don't wrap all our restaurant cutlery in packaging to demonstrate it's clean. Have to admit, didn't encounter than when in California myself, but it does make you wonder. We cannot sanitise the world!!
