40 Times ‘Real Beauty’ Was Chosen Instead Of Photoshop And People Really Liked It (New Pics)
Social media is notorious for everything except showing the real things. From heavy photo editing and airbrushing pictures to carefully staging every move they make, from hiding the raw stuff and only showcasing the perfect side of things, you may start to wonder why everyone but you has a perfect life, perfect relationship, and perfect skin. Hence, the self-image issues.
Very rarely, unedited and real beauty pictures find their place on notoriously fake social media. Like a very fresh breath of air, they remind us to not take things for granted. They pour a bag of salt onto everything influencers show, do, and say.
Thanks to the r/Instagramreality subreddit with over a million members, which documents all the Instagrammers and influencers that cross the line in faking their pictures, we have quite a collection of real beauty pics to look at. When you're done with this list, make sure to check out part 1.

I Spy With My Little Eye… A Real Thigh
This. I'm a transfem, and I thank the genetic lottery that my thighs and hips actually got massive during my original male puberty, BUT they grew too fast and I have huge patches of stretch marks on them. I know I look great even on my bad days, and my boyfriend says all they do is tell him how well proportioned I am. But there's just no representation of this stuff, and so internally I can only see it as an awful blemish on my body I'm stuck with.

Polish Lingerie Brand, The First Thing You See On Their Website
this is the kind of bra's we need , all the cute bra's is the most cutest , but no style when it comes to DD's and up, but this ad 100%
Yes, and these bras look like it has the proper support and firm cups. I hate those soft cups. To me, it doesn't have enough support. Now, I need to know which ad this is. Maybe I can look for the brand.

Better than my "Wow...four different women and all my type".
Load More Replies...I love the inclusivity but feel so sorry for their backs. I'm a DD and would love a reduction!
I had a reduction two years ago, and the change is amazing. No more neck pain, no more headaches or back spasms... I can't recommend it enough if you suffer from any of that!
Load More Replies...The first thing I saw here was the way the first (far left) bra is cutting a gouge into her side.
Thats cause fat is soft. The band needs to be tight cause that is what gives you support.
Load More Replies...Dove did the same type of advertizing, casting women of all " shapes and sizes ".
The thing is, I think there's still photoshop at work here. Because your skin isn't perfectly smooth and tone at this size- I know because I am big, and it's just a fact of natural human skin. You get veins and lines and bumps. If you're going to be real, be REAL.
Yes I do notice with a great many of the "look at us using plus models aren't we so inclusive and real-life" company adverts that they only use "cute fat girls" as my bestie says. If the plus is considered not in the right areas they photoshop them out/smaller or smooth it all over. Kind of defeats the purpose of claiming to represent real life people. Similarly very petite models often get curved up, lengthened and smoothed. No wonder people go nuts trying to emulate what they get told is a "completely natural and unretouched model"
Load More Replies...Many of us suspect that the picture-perfect and highly photoshopped images of people we see on social media make us feel worse about our own bodies. Often subconsciously, we start comparing ourselves to people in Instagram images, and we judge ourselves to be worse off. Whether it’s the perfect skin, the successful career, the luxurious holidays, the designer clothing you cannot afford, or the gym body, the reality on social media affects our body image in a shattering way.
The research has made it clear social media triggers teenagers and children to dislike their own bodies. The findings of this study warn that social media represents a significant risk to the current and future health of today’s young generations.

I just don't like the white teeth on people. I always wonder if they glow in the dark.
Wow, in a post about not judging people by their appearance there sure is a lot of judgement! Old habits die hard I guess.
Swooning over every smile line. Smiles and their wrinkles are. The. Best.
On Europe’s Biggest Billboard
Yep, mine was like that for about 2 years after. For some it never completely goes back to how it was before pregnancy.
Load More Replies...Not two days ago my mother showed me a photo of a model in a cropped shirt with a stomach that had pregnancy wrinkles. She was trying to bait me into saying it looked bad and should be covered. I said "why though? This is what representation looks like." She tried to shift gears and quote things that HER mother would say if she saw the photo and even then I said "Ma! That's just Grandma coming out of YOU!" She took the photo away. I don't tolerate body shaming even though I was raised with it.
I had twins.. I'm 125 pounds I was 215 when I had them.... This means so very much to me
Childbirth is very traumatic to your body, and your skin had to stretch a heck of a lot to give room for those babies! You were creating miracles so what is a little wrinkly skin in the grand scheme? You are an amazing miracle maker, mama. Don’t ever forget that.
Load More Replies...this actually made me tear up, that's like my belly twin. Whatever's wrong with me makes me think mine is bad and hers is beautiful, I hate that
You are beautiful. It may take time to be comfortable with yourself, but your body does amazing things. Your skin and your scars just show how far you've come and what you have come through. I scar easily. My life is marked on my skin. A dog bite? Yep, right there on my calf. But stupidly, mosquito bites? Yeah, those leave marks, too. Little round purplish-red marks. Adolescent acne, cat scratches, an assault with an edged weapon, a rock climbing fall, a few surgeries, all the bumps and scraped of life, I am scarred from head to toe. They aren't major or disabling, but I have used to wear long sleeves and heavy makeup all the time. I won't say I believe I'm beautiful. But I don't wear makeup anymore and I will go out in public in shorts and a T-shirt. And people don't scream. They don't stare. Sometimes a toddler age kid will ask an innocent question like does that hurt, and...it doesn't. So, we're perfectly normal, and you are beautiful.

Yes, this is a testament to motherhood. It should be honored, not shamed.

Load More Replies...That looks painful. My heart goes out to people who have to deal with cystic acne. One of my cousins has extensive facial scarring from it. But he's still very handsome!
What's wrong with textured skin? I don't see why so many people think having a few skin flaws means you are ugly. Some of the prettiest girls I know have skin flaws
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This young lady is beautiful by any standards.
I found out that tomatoes triggered acne outbreaks for me. Also wool.
Not wanting to have acne is not unrealistic beauty standard. My kid had cystic acne and it was horrendous, it literally looked like this photo. It affected his mental health and confidence, he didn't want to go anywhere and it was very sad.I spent thousands of dollars for his treatment and his face looks beautiful with only a couple of tiny scars.Thank goodness for the treatments
I did some real dumb s**t when I was a teenager, and got caught because the cops were looking for "a punk with a VERY rough complexion" there was 30+ people in the room I was in, they scanned the people, then made a beeline straight to me, I didn't know about the description at that time, so I tried denying, even acting indignant, the cop said, we're looking for a "pizza face with extra toppings", lmmfao

Four in 10 said they are in mental health distress, with almost one in five experiencing body image issues and 14% experiencing eating difficulties, such as extremely restrictive eating, binge eating and purging or vomiting. Of those in need of support, just one in ten young people were receiving treatment. While the youngest internet users may be more prone to being negatively affected by social media, grown-up men and women are no exception.
The Representation Is So Wonderful To See
Agreed. But the first place my mind went is how the heck is she going to get herself into and out of that thing. They're virtually impossible with two hands. I would have preferred to see her in something that was accessible for her to actually dress herself in.

The Existence Of Arm Hair!
And tbh this girl isn't actually hairier than average - Her hair is just dark and therefore more visible.
Load More Replies...As a woman I have hair on my arms, legs, face. I was told to start, plucking, waxing, shaving at about 11 years old. I still do to this day because I was conditioned to believe it needed to be done, that hair was shameful. I now have a ten year old daughter and I see she is growing hair, but I refuse to place the same beauty standards onto her that were placed on me. She hasn't expressed and embarrassment over it, and I don't want her to feel any, so I say nothing.
That's so great. I feel similar: annoyed and frustrated that women are expected to shave but also conditioned to find my body hair unattractive. The best we can do is not pass these beauty standards on to our kids, I guess.
Load More Replies...My arm/leg hair is blonde, but I could still be mistaken for a Yeti if the sunlight hits just right 😅
My partner talks about this, she is self conscious I guess, I never though this was a thing. How ridiculous to shame somebody over hair on their arms
In High School, I remember talking with a couple of guys when a fourth guy came up to join the conversation. After a couple of minutes, the fourth guy said 'Damn AK! You got more hair on your arms than me!' I turned bright red, stopped talking, and turned and walked away. I'm not good with the quick comebacks and I was already self-conscious about my arm hair. I'm very pale with dark body hair, so it's pretty noticeable.
I'm blond and caucasian, but at 16 an older boyfriend convinced me to shave.....everything. Pubic area, arms, any facial fuzz, etc. Do you know what happens? You break out, you get ingrown hairs, you suffer cuts on sensitive areas....still to this day (at 40) I am extremely self conscious of any hair on my body.
When I was in highschool, I was told my arms look like cacti (blonde hair). I still remember that remark 20 years later.
Unattainable beauty standards popularized by influencers on social media provided little space for examples of real beauty in the past. But body positivity movements are growing bigger and stronger, and there are obvious signs that people are tired of fakery.
In fact, in recent years, there has been an important and necessary shift towards embracing body inclusivity in the fashion and beauty industries. Body inclusivity is the belief that all body types should be represented and celebrated in the media, regardless of size, shape, ability or gender.
This shift has been driven by a growing movement of individuals and organizations who are committed to making fashion, beauty and media more inclusive and representative of a wider range of body types.
80s Supermodel Wants To Reject Anti-Aging Culture And Prove That Beauty Gets Better With Age
How brave. Except not all of us win the genetic lottery. Edit: I'm saying it's rather disingenuous to add her to this list of truly courageous individuals overcoming physical limitations or obvious nonconformity to beauty "standards" [don't bite my head off!] when she not only looks better at 56 than most of the population at their best AND she participated in/benefited from the industry that created havoc with self esteem issues to begin with!!
I think perhaps you have missed the point? This whole post is saying that what we see daily in the media is not real. That we are all beautiful, even with our thic thighs, bad skin, wrinkles and drooping boobs we are beautiful.

It’s okay to notice wrinkles and say she has them. They aren’t a bad thing.
Load More Replies...I love this so much and love seeing how many intimate apparel websites are going this way. Just because you're older than a certain age doesn't mean you don't still have the desire or right to feel and look comfortable and sexy. I'm 38 and recently I've noticed the sags and wrinkles starting to creep in and it is so, so comforting and confidence boosting to know I can feel sexy at any age and in any shape my body may take. I am well aware that my husband loves me for me, he tells me; but this just gives me that little bit of reassurance. :)

Where do I buy this??? All my life I have been strugling with bras that I cant fill and and feels like carrying something empty that weighs more than my own boobs! Is that or showing my nipples around, which just doesnt make me feel comfortable.. I always felt that Iwas the problem and maybe it was just the bras!!!
Someone else commented that this might be an ad for a brand called pepper? Maybe check there :D also, its defintaly the bras’ problem
Load More Replies...Always frustrated me that the cost for bras in small sizes is the same as it is for bras in large sizes. Much less material, fewer hooks. At least knock a couple of dollars off.
I totally get what you're saying, but remember, plus size clothes usually cost a few dollars more, so maybe it balances out a bit.
Load More Replies...Now we just need one reinvented for LARGE boobs!!! I’m just glad someone finally started making 38DDD Push up bras. Do you have any idea how much weight that takes off your shoulders and back?
The aim of body inclusivity is to challenge the traditional beauty standards that have long been perpetuated by the fashion and beauty industries. This movement seeks to create an environment where all body types are seen as beautiful and worthy of celebration.
The fashion industry has recently begun to embrace body inclusivity in a number of ways. Many brands have started to cast models of all shapes and sizes in their campaigns, which has helped to create a more diverse representation of body types in the media. Additionally, many brands are now offering extended sizing to better accommodate a wider range of body types.
The beauty industry has also taken steps towards body inclusivity. Many beauty companies have begun to expand their shade ranges to include a wider range of skin tones.

This is why body positivity and inclusivity is so important,” Pua’Nani Owens, a lifestyle influencer and body positivity advocate told Bored Panda. Owens said that there are “literally thousands of curvy influencers and plus-size fashionistas on every social media platform.”
Owens argues that the very representation of girls with bodies like hers is “what gave me the courage to claim my spot as a curvy lifestyle influencer. What started as a movement to love ourselves turned into a lifestyle of breaking the boundaries of both the beauty and the fashion industry to create and promote inclusivity.”

This Photo Of Her Was Taken In 2003 And Not Photoshopped
She was so sad. I believe this was when she was having serious mental health struggles. If you look at pretty much all of the pictures from around this time, you can see the pain she is in. It is heartbreaking .
Load More Replies...Don't get how this is flawed. Perfect lighting, professional photog....
It isn't. That's kinda the point. Others would photoshop out the tiny wrinkles between and the stretch marks on her boobs, and they would smooth her skin all the way to uncanny valley.

It most certainly was. Yes, they left a couple of moles and didn't shop her chest but her face is totally shopped.

“I feel as though true body positivity starts on the inside and with each individual person. I’m a firm believer that if you love yourself and have a positive outlook on life, that it is contagious and will boost others on their individual journeys within their own lives,” Owens explained.

Its Amazing That A Lingerie Brand Shows All Types Of Bodies
As they should, because we all have different body types and different looks.
I have vitiligo and this makes me so so happy!!!! My daughter even managed to find a book in her school library that depicted one of the characters with vitiligo. I was so ashamed at first but now I couldn't care less. I love my moo cow look 🤣🤣

“Aging gracefully” implies aging is supposed to be elegant or pleasing to others and that’s BS. Women don’t have to be “graceful.” Unapologetically aging is better. Or just unfiltered. But women shouldn’t be shamed for their choices in cosmetic surgery whether they choose to have it or not.

Same Legs Different Lighting For This Fitness Influencer - It's Time To Love Your Lumps And Bumps
Please no downvoting, it's 'fair'/respectful to the model imho. So here: Tbf, it's okay to turn your body a bit for better lighting. Same as a type of smile, or a better body pose. You wanna look nice. In the past I have edited out pimples on a face. Person had never pimples, but exactly on that day, big pimple. Told her to forget about it, and be the person who she would be on any other day, otherwise we would have NO images or someone really self aware... Not worth it imho. So... I edited out (more downgrading, still there but more subtle) the pimple. I don't regret it. But big retouches, never done it, unless by specific request of model.
That's very different than slapping on so many filters and retouches it looks completely unreal! Enhancing with make up, lights, a bit of post production it's perfectly fine

Aging Skin, Natural Teeth And Brows, Skin Texture, Model Variety... *chef's Kiss*
As a dental professional I question "natural teeth" The back teeth are whiter than the front teeth therefore not likely to be natural. Also I would bet that she has undergone teeth whitening for the rest. While it's certainly much nicer than the current trend of perfectly straight, bright white "horse teeth" (Simon Cowell etc) it's still cosmetically enhanced and that's not something obtainable by all.
Yup, they don't really look like natural ones. And at that age she probably has dentures or at least a few false ones. Some of those false ones are also ridiculously expensive so poor people would not be able to afford 'em.

Glad To See The Magazine Didn't Edit This Out
Refreshing indeed... However I've got the suspicion that this is a paparazzi shot, published by a magazine to possibly body-shame JLo. (Edit: to acknowledge the comments below she is indeed in fantastic shape. Anyway as a women reading ("toxic") women magazines since the 90s, I can tell you that this would be a bodyshaming post. Pointing out how her skin "wraps" over the waistline of her jeans (either because she's too fat or too skinny), to have 16 pages later the ideal workout to get a bum like JLo... Since Covid I've mostly stopped reading those... hope they'd become better in the meantime.)
If anyone seriously looks at those clearly visible abs as some sort of body-shame then they have issues.

I remember a few occasions when I've been to see a makeup artist, once at the Body shop and another at a generic store that had a makeup artist and both times they had great difficulty finding a foundation pale enough for me.
Ten shades is not a wide range. That's why none of them match. If the ad only requires three human arms to showcase the entire shade range, the brand needs to do better. Fenty Beauty showed us how it's done six years ago. Fifty shades, no excuses.

She Looks Stunning
Her underwear brand is great-I'm big chested and her bras are really supportive whilst still being gorgeous, and the bigger sizes look the same as the smaller ones, unlike other brands where the bigger sizes end up looking like surgical appliances!

I can never decide if I think it's genuine or performative. Both?
I think it’s performative, but also that it doesn’t really matter. It’s representation either way.
Load More Replies...This is ridiculous. The system using the anti-system protest to sell more stuff. I don't need you to show me while I poo because "hey, real people poo and this have been censored and forgotten". And now downvote me to oblivion. But you should really read Marcuse first.
Commerce 101: do whatever it takes to make your product look good so people want to buy it. It's that simple. We don't have to like it, or agree with it, but it's the truth. People are not going to buy a product that uses (for example) a Nazi to advertize it. (Or most won't.) The reason there is more diversity in ads today is that most people are more accepting of diversity. These ads would have bombed in previous eras. Like it or not, but the majority opinion of the consumers is what drives advertizing. The takeaway from this *should* be that we as a society have actually progressed, a little. Otherwise these companies wouldn't even risk it.

Why is she using a CPAP while awake? I hate mine when I’m sleeping, so I can’t imagine using it awake.
Lots of people need to use a bipap machine all day to breathe (disability advocate Alice Wong is another example). Just because you’ve never seen it before and don’t understand it doesn’t mean it’s not real. Your dismissal of this person is exactly why representation is needed. What's with censoring the names of celebrities on this list? Behold Lupita Nyong'o, folks.
These are pulled from a subreddit with a rule about not naming companies or individuals in posts or titles. The rule exists to curtail 1. Doxxing/witch-hunts 2. Paid posts. The rule applies to celebrities too because otherwise people end up fighting in the comments over how famous is too famous to bother with censoring, lol

I Never See Waist Beads On Normal Women
I understand the sentiment, but I don't appreciate the wording. Kinda sounds like slim women or women without stretch marks are not "normal".
I agree. A common comment whenever a newspaper or magazine does fashion spreads on mid-range sized women is 'At last we can see clothes on a real woman!" Size 6 women are still real women, size 12 women are still real women, size 22 women are real too. OK, so the average size of women in general may be larger than the average size of those women who model clothing for a living, but just because they are very slim, that doesn't make them not real.

Wow but her surgeon must go to jail! How can he make such huge stitches? I the vertical scar is one thing but the horizontal lines are from the stitches which must have been so big
We have no context as to what catastrophic event caused this scarring, but it was clearly something very major. Better to have big scars but a job well done and a life saved than to keep someone under a longer anaesthetic when their vitals are unstable. Let's not second guess the work of the person who saved this woman's life.

It doesn't look distracting. It looks normal. What "looks distracting" is when a woman's armpit is edited to be just perfectly-smooth, perfectly-colored flesh. THAT is distracting.

And you got people body shaming her from pictures of her at the golden globes. It is normal to have fluctuating weight. It is normal to have a rounder face with weight gain. Selena looks beautiful no matter how much she weighs or her body shape, or her skin texture, or her body hair. Her body is a normal body.
I completely agree. People have been shaming her for years and she's such a beautiful young woman. I hope she can ignore these trolls as much as those of us who love her acting and singing. She's a fabulous person and those people should be ashamed.

It's, to me, really sad. There is a photo she posted just before the most recent surgeries where she still has "Madonna" around her eyes, but now she could be anybody and I'd never guess. Not shaming, she can do what she likes, but she is on the pile with Jennifer Grey's nose and Uma Thurman's whole deal. Nip and tuck, fine, become somebody else entirely, weird to me.

awesome list! i wish there was more representation for men too, though.
I really needed to see this. I've recently put on weight and went clothes shopping. Almost started crying when I saw I gained two pants sizes (thought it was only one). But now i have clothes that feel good because they FIT and it helps to see realistic bodies online and see thighs, tummy rolls, extra hair, all of the good stuff.

I won't and don't. Be you and feel beautiful!
