I’ve Been Photographing Couples Underwater For 21 Years And Here Are My Favorite Shots
Under the water, things are different; everything becomes light and silent. For 10 years, I’ve been transforming aquatic backdrops into underwater photography studios for romantic couples' photoshoots. I combine natural light with flashes placed in and out of the water to create stunning pictures.
Each couple I bring underwater is a new challenge for me, as I adapt to their abilities and capture their personalities. It’s important to help them relax and be themselves, and get them to do things they never believed they could do. My sessions last three to six hours. It may seem long, but I need that time to connect with the couple so that together we can create beautiful photos that represent them. In general, the best photographs are achieved at the end when the lovers forget about the professional photographer and are having fun in the water. As time goes by, I too become more comfortable directing them so that their personality shines through the amazing photos.
I work in the sea, and in swimming pools where it is even easier to manage the light and the backgrounds. But, without a doubt, the most spectacular aquatic studios I know are the cenotes of the Riviera Maya in Mexico.

Only early in the morning on winter (from October to February) sunlight flow on this cave.
I add smog in the cave to better see the sunrays.
It’s not a fake, the sunrays really pierce the surface. Just natural light.
I use smoke to reveal sunrays coming through a hole on the roof of the cave.
On this great spot, I use 5 flashlights to reveal the beauty of the cave.
Very easy dive for the couple as they are just under the surface.
For this kind of photos, the only thing that matter is synchronization between the couple and the photographer.
I customize the session according the skill and the personality of the lovers. They are great divers!

I love to play with the natural light. Reflection of the sunlight on their dresses illuminate their faces in a perfect way.
100% artificial light to capture this image (two flashlights: one on the back in the water and another out of the water between them and I) .
This dive is very easy for the couple as they are just under the surface.
Under the water, bodies seem weightless, fabrics float and flow. Just one flashlight on the back.
