Our brains just love symmetry! So much so that when we see a fine example of things just falling nicely into place just as they should, it satisfies us deep within our souls.
Of course, when we encounter the opposite - the wonky, the askew, the lop-sided - it triggers a vague feeling of discomfort. This reaction is stronger in some than in others, but even those of us who would consider themselves chill about imperfections can get fixated on certain mistakes.
Can't understand what I mean? Well, as a follow up to previous efforts here and here, Bored Panda has collected another list of things that aren't quite right and are sure to set the alarm bells ringing. A really freakin ugly a*s floor and I can see the mistake right off the bat. Wow! I guess they thought a good eye wouldn't even notice it. hahaha!
So what lies behind this fascination with all things symmetrical? Well, according to an article in HowStuffWorks, it comes from the fact that most objects in the real world are symmetrical. "This is particularly true of nature: the radial symmetry of starfish or flower petals, the symmetrical efficiency of a hexagonal honeycomb, or the uniquely symmetrical crystal patterns of a snowflake," they write. "In fact asymmetry is often a sign of illness or danger in the natural world."

I know teachers who do this, and I really don't get why! Every file they create, they save to the desktop! I keep a folder on my desktop, with all the files pertaining to my current classes. Once I'm finished with this semester or the project, and move those folders off the desktop!

Sometimes grid-aligned cities do things like that on purpose in heavily residential areas next to major thoroughfares to keep traffic from treating the streets one block over as they would the thoroughfare (in other words, the misalignment keeps cars off the narrower streets where more pedestrians are).

My town is like that, part of the town was oriented north/south, and part was oriented with the railroad tracks, it was ok until the town grew enough for the sections to merge

It's a matte of picking which neurotic planner to listen to. The one who says the streets must be on a north-south grid, and the one who says (in the case of this picture) to align the rest of the town grid with the shoreline.

In an essay called The Symmetrical Universe, Alan Lightman, American physicist, writer, and author of The Accidental Universe: The World You Thought You Knew, writes:
"Symmetry leads to economy, and nature, like human beings, seem to prefer economy. They were laying square vinyl tiles, cut to shape. To put in a tiny white triangle there would have been pretty impossible and it would almost certainly have come out before long. Of course if they'd cut the white ones corner to corner in the first place this would not have happened.

So try to relax whilst perusing this list - your sense of discomfort or even anger at the asymmetry of things is fully justified, and is an appropriate human reaction to these design outrages. Good symmetry is good organization and our brains are hardwired to appreciate that!

Even just walking on it in bad weather is risking limbs... and yep, poor grip and anything moving is a bad combo. Considering the amount of times they'd have to fix this and how badly it holds up it's probably also massively more expensive than just repaving it in the end.

They do do this in Michigan. They totally redid a road by my house (grinding it to the dirt) then a few months later they came through and cut the road up and slathered it with this stuff. Maybe for better expansion?

This Building Where Nothing Lines Up

The architecture there is on purpose. The church that stood there before was blasted by the regime of the GDR in 1968 although the building survived WWII without any damages. The design of the new building by Van Eggerat is referring to this history. If you see the whole picture it seems as if the building is sliding apart. It's located in Leipzig and part of a university campus.

Well, it is actually the facade of the church of the University of Leipzig - which is on the same spot where the old church stood before it was bombed in WWII and then later demolished by the Soviet occupants. The outlines of the new church mirrors the outlines of the old church and it is purposely miss-aligned to visualise the 'disruption' caused by its absence until it was rebuilt.... you can read more about its history here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulinerkirche,_Leipzig

This was a common style of laying bricks in the arts & crafts movement. Google "clinker bricks" and look at images, you'll find many examples.

This happens when bricks used, were already used in another building. Some of them were no properly separated from one another, so they put the as the fit. This was very common before.

Probably for the same reason why I didn't move the heater to the window from the inner wall. Because I didn't want to remove all the cabinets and counters in my kitchen so they could put the pipes there. The other solution would have been something like this s**t above. ;D I guess there was something standing there the residents didn't want to move and when they moved out, this nonesense was left like this.

This I actually know because my first job was painting road lines at a chemical plant when I was 14. You're supposed sweep the area to remove lose dirt, then put the tape down which requires getting on your hands and knees, and then paint the section. Then move to the next section. Later you come back and remove the tape. Taping is 1/2 of the whole job, someone got lazy.

My guess is this used to be a duplex with two different residences in one house. At some point they were connected into one house and they had to decide which side got the front door.

To be fair, electric sockets are installed on wall studs, and trim doesn't not always line up with that. However, I would rather the trim just had a gap where the socket is. That would bother me way less.

Carpentry is good, layout is terrible. When the carpenter was laying out the trim he could have easily adjusted it so the outlet would fall in the middle of the opening.

The extended space between the doors for the green is just as bad. Also five green on one side of it. Four on the one with one red. Maybe they are done in sets of five, but one of the green ones broke. Only had a red to fix it.

It is the stadium at Peoria where the Padres and Mariners do their spring training. Over the years it has grown. the original practice fields are the ones with the plate closest to the stadium where a player could go from the facilities to the other fields. As it grew, they realized an advantage to having all home plates near one another, but since it is a spring training facility, there is no value in paying to redo the first fields.

Classic vent-pipe fail. The print didn't tell the plumbers where they needed to run the vent for the sink drain, so they ran it straight up from the waste pipe. Naturally, that put it in the way of the electrical box for the light fixture and the connection on the back of the mirror.

After Iowa had already formed as a state in 1846, Iowa formed 51 counties, which covered the entire state, in the year 1851. One of those counties was named Bancroft County, it was located north of Kossuth County, to the Minnesota State line. Bancroft County had one major drawback, it was mainly covered with wetlands and sloughs, not suitable for settlers to farm and make a living there. Nearby Algona leaders petitioned the Iowa Legislature to rescind that county, and make it part of Kossuth County, where Algona was located. Because it was covered from wetlands, and would never be productive farmland. Officials decided to make the northern part into a wildlife refuge.

My husband takes all the eggs from one side, which annoys me because it makes the carton feel uneven in weight. I prefer to take evenly from each side so that the weight is distributed when you pull the carton out.
