Trends and popular things are, by their design, things that change and shift with time. Something that was popular a year ago is now considered an outdated reference, a popular meme can outstay its welcome in a month, and minor trends go in and out of fashion daily. Basically, just because something is widely accepted today doesn't mean it will have the same significance after some time passes. Perhaps to commemorate these trends, or just catalogue them for future reference, there are community threads online that talk about the trendy things that likely won't be cool in 5 years' time. One such discussion is hosted on Reddit, where people readily expressed their opinions about what they think won't withstand the test of time.

True. They're being made fun of. And a lot of businesses refuse to give freebies to these freeloaders.

As generational heroes go, it's pretty sad. They'll go away if people stop supporting them. But there's a level of vapidity and shallowness that's become the norm, a lack of intelligence and insight. Plus, these many of these influencers are famous for NOTHING. No discernible talents at all. Unless body posing, flattering lighting, deceptive makeup and a giant plastic ass are considered talent.

As long as there's dumb people obsessed with lowest common denominator "popularity", there will be influencers. So...Yeah, they're a part of the internet media landscape forever.

Not quite. SARS viruses have shown themselves to be much more mutable and variable than common flu viruses and their infectiousness generally increases with each time. We will be better prepared for the future outbreaks but masks and occasional localized lockdowns will not be going away any time soon.

Some of the things listed by the community are leaning more towards actual items, such as so-called MLM teas. Other picks feature plastic surgery trends. And then there are those who think that the websites we use now will lose their influence and be forgotten or abandoned. Basically, the things that send people raving today, in 5 years, could be irrelevant.

I understand the kids like doing these silly dances and pranks- we all did when we were young.... But I don’t see that anymore on insta and TikTok. It’s grown adults doing these dances that are IMO for kids under 13. Pranks are funny when they are unsuspecting, not when they are scripted AND played out by adults

I love TikTok. I have found a lot of great small businesses that I now buy stuff from that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. I have picked up some great tips and ideas for my own business too. I get some great recipes, great tips on handling every day issues and just laugh at a lot of the skits that are done. I hope they don't get rid of it.

Oh they'll go....for a while. Eyebrow fashion changes between skinny and fat. 70s skinny brows 80s bushy brows 90s skinny brows, I kinda ignored the rest, but avoided doing any eyebrow trend myself, I just tidy them to their natural shape (mum warned me after overplucking hers and having them not grow back properly)

It’s true. When my mother first plucked my eyebrows for me, I had a big, thick, dark unibrow (my hair was still very, very blonde at the time, but no longer the colorless white of my childhood), and my schoolmates made fun of me and accused me of dying my eyebrows, which wasn’t a thing back then (outside of Hollywood, that is). Over the years I kept plucking away trying to make them even, and now they are but a too-short pale version of their former glory.

Trends are tricky because of their very foundation. Something becomes popular because it's new and exciting, it presents something that captures people's attention, but if it doesn't provide long-term value, it tends to go away. Just look back at the trends that ruled the '90s, for example. Those are now considered to be an archaic concept in the current climate.

I am constantly stunned that the younger people in my family find this "normal" and all I see are possibly disturbed, addicted, shallow (mostly women) processing and Filtering and lying about their looks to the point of bizarre freakishness. It's not healthy, and the type of "beauty" look they all try for is exactly what I'm sad to see society feeds into. Sexualizing of women and young girls, huge asses, huge boobs, faces like blow up sex dolls, unrealistic images and not much about personality, accomplishments, self esteem, strength, acceptance of yourself as a human being. I remember people yelling like mad about how skinny models used to be and the "heroin chic" look was so damaging and unrealistic, causing anorexia and bulimia and self harm among young girls. Yet..here we are, 1000 times worse, and it's somehow ok.

Actually, a study was conducted to find out what children used what social media platforms today. The study asked 1,500 middle and high school students. 62 percent of teens said they use Instagram while 58 percent use Snapchat. (Texting was most popular, used by 98 percent of the teens surveyed.) Facebook was, surprisingly, only 7 percent. (This is not copy-and-pasted or plagiarized. I wrote this by myself.)

I have been a member of FB since around 2005ish. I used to be the type that would check it many times through out the day and would even get lost in the silly games. Aside from the jigsaw one, I just don't play them anymore. I think a lot of people are getting tired of the political side of it and it will just melt away in time. I think all social media is going to slowly go away in the future when people realize that there is so much more to do in the outside world. Especially since Covid has locked us all up for so long, the outside is looking pretty good.

I reported a video of a woman twerking naked, over a baby's face, while the baby was in a floor bassinet and they said it was fine.....did not remove it..... ffs. I think it will still be popular, but I think things like butt implants and super huge lips are likely going to go by the wayside and look really dated like the OP said. It's hard to see people giving up wanting to look more youthful, slimmer, people stopping being self conscious about noses they think are too big, and all that. Those sorts of insecurities are pretty long standing. Feeling like you need a massive butt or cartoonishly large lips found nowhere in nature are more of a fad.

In 200 years, they will dig up graves & find strange, non biodegradable sacs inside the coffins. (especially in LA!) People will not believe that women actually paid to get mutilated & have these things inserted into their chests, risking cancers, immune system disorders and all kinds of other health problems. This will be taught in history classes at school. It's actually insane if you think about it intelligently.

I think plastic surgery will become much more popular and commonplace as the procedures continue to become more streamlined and accessible to the average populace. I can foresee walk-in clinics for a touch-up as needed, popping up in futuristic strip malls.

Remember that the original purpose of plastic surgery was to restore usability to very damaged faces. It'd be nice to get rid of every cause of severely damaged faces (war) but failing that, plastic surgery is good.

Then there's a rule of 'what goes around comes around.' There are cases of trends and cool things that were popular before, got old and abandoned, and then resurfaced when we least expected it. Of course, the most obvious cases are centered in the fashion industry, but there are other things too, coming in a variety of categories, such as names or even those same internet trends.

It's because there's been a shortage, making the console more "valuable", as it's rare to obtain. However, in 5 years, usually the prices of these products do drop. The focus shifts more onto the games themselves instead, which is good in my opinion. Games are art. Anyway, I'll get mine too, but I don't hurry. I'm a bit busy to play video games anyway, and both Final Fantasy 16 and FF7 Remake 2 are still far away anyway.

I am also puzzled as to why "unboxing" videos are popular. Are people that terrified of products they order that they want to see how it's done, be assured it will be what they ordered and it's so fascinating it's worth making a 10 minute video on?

I quit smoking after 35 years and vaping is what got me there. For 3 + years I have been cigarette free. I vape regularly and use the fruit-flavored juices (nicotine or not -- doesn't matter). Morning coughing is no more and I, my car, my clothing etc. smell perfectly fine. In fact, I now gag at the smell of a smoker (their clothing and accoutrements) and the realization of how difficult I made life for my children when they went to school or friend's homes smelling like cigarette smoke absolutely breaks my heart. There is absolutely no comparison between the smell of a vape user and a cigarette or tobacco smoker.

People who hate vaping have clearly never been addicted to cigarettes and have no idea how difficult it is to quit. Vaping has helped so many people cut down on/quit cigarettes, and tapering down nicotine strengths of vape juices often helps people to quit nicotine all together. Although it's still not good for you, mostly all vape juice brands contain far fewer chemicals than cigarettes. Changing coils frequently also helps.

Vaping is better than smoking. Sure, there are obnoxious vapers who like blowing huge clouds...But they are the minority. Most are people who can't quit nicotine, but have quit smoking it.

I'm sure we don't know the sideffects of vaping yet.. I believe there will be many studies in the future that will prove that it might be the same with smoking if not worse... there are a lot of chemicals inside and some doctors already see the results... don't forget that cigarettes where considered healthy when they first came out!

Honestly, I would gladly go to zoom calls instead of class. Class is scary because everyone can see every move that you make and thus make judgements off of your body language. Besides, I like being able to privately chat to the teacher ‘hey, yeah, you’re teaching a class of kindergarteners’ instead of keeping the thought forever in my head. Besides-besides, I mean, I don’t like talking to people.

If the 5-day work work does fade, I hope it is replaced by options that can be tailored to the needs of the employee and their family or current situation. That might be longer but fewer days, shorter but more days etc. Equalizing the needs of the business with the needs of the employee would be most ideal.

In the 90s I worked at a family-run video store and when the owner finally made me a full-time employee, I was given a split-week schedule, which I came to really love. I would spend my Wednesday off going to the movies (which my boss reimbursed me for because regular customers really appreciated my movie knowledge and my ability to articulate what the strengths and weaknesses of the films) and my Saturdays off staying at home and decompressing after dealing with rude and obnoxious customers all the other days. (The R&O customers were a small subset numerically, but were a big portion psychically.)

Yeah. It’s like that corporate art style that feels all wrong. They tried to take a mishmash of different art styles and mashed it all into one, making it an absolute nightmare to behold. For those of you who don’t know, watch the grub hub ad or something, and you’ll see what I mean.

Because we are scared! It took me 8 years to build up the courage to go under the knife and it was one of the best decisions I ever made! At first I was happy with the reputation that came with my penis but actually living with it was horrific! I felt like a freak with an abnormality. It was all anyone talked about, and a practical sex life was non-existent. Women would hear about it and hound me to see it or sleep with them. When I entered a long term relationship it was established quite early on that a 'normal' sex life was not going to happen. We agreed I would be happier with a reduction, regardless of how our relationship went, but it took 8 years before I did anything about it! This illogical fear about anything hurting our genitals will be men's undoing!

They have the highest mortality rate of all plastic surgeries. It just seems so ridiculous to go to such lengths to do that to yourself. I feel very sorry for the people who have such low self worth they feel that they need to do that to feel better about themselves

Oh, i've heard of it, and it's awful, as well as super dangerous. You have to gain a crap ton of weight in a very short period of time, then they take the fat out of your body, and inject it into your behind. If it goes wrong or isn't done properly, it can be fatal.

"Influencers" and others with no skills beyond their face should be pushed out. But there are many who have great skills and are happy to share them. I love to watch them and hope that youngsters will catch on to hobbies and skills that might benefit them later in life. The variety of content available on YouTube is immeasurable in incomparable to TV or any other streaming service. It appeals to individuals of all ages, races, nationalities etc etc. I hope it is here to stay.

I am way past tired of trying to look at a video and being bugged to subscribe before I even get to start seeing it. Tired of trying to read articles online only to have the actual area of text be a tiny section because they rest of the screen is jammed with the icons of every single social platform. Also tired of everything I want to look at seems to be "owned" by Pinterest now so even if it's public content as soon as it's Pinned that's all the search engines send you to and you have to sign up for an account to view it. This is hijacking public content. They won't even tell you the original site, so the people who took the time and trouble to make it are losing hits and viewers because Pinterest decided they own it.

I hate how all the radio station advertisements include it. Tell your robot to play our music! I'm...already listening, I don't need to do that. The worst is ads where they get her to tell jokes or say mean things. Like, can you not afford humans? This isn't witty banter, I know you wrote everything it's saying, is the joke supposed to be how lonely you are? You have to have a robot insult you to seem interesting?

I stopped listening to the radio because the ads made me completely nutso. I loved it when Pandora became a thing because I got to learn a lot of new music and musical artists without commercials. Plus, you mold it to your preferences, so after three thumbs down, I never had to listen to Bob Dylan’s horrible nasally voice ever again. *Great* songwriter, sh!t singer.

I say this as a collector, but I could see that but since they've been on the rise for ten years, I'll be generous & give them another 10 and then they're passé as 'popular'. After all, even beanie babies are still around, sure not a fad anymore but around is around.

I don't really have anything against Twitter. I just don't like the people trying to cancel creators using made-up evidence and the toxic stans. I see at least 10 people trying to cancel people like Dream, GeorgeNotFound, TommyInnit every day by using photoshopped tweets from them and old clips of them saying slurs they now condemn. It's annoying. Give them a break.

I dunno, I think if a certain hairstyle looks good on a person, they should wear it. But trendy styles can look dumb with certain faces and head shapes.

Most girls/women are not doing themselves any favors by having bangs, no matter the colour. On beautiful women, they just hide the natural structure of a beautiful face. On homely women they just highlight the feature they want to hide, usually their nose.

Glaciers. It is estimated that Earth is losing roughly 1.2 trillion tons of ice per year. Throughout the 1990s, ice loss was about 760 billions tons per year.

The National Park Service has quietly removed all the signs put up by the Obama administration that told visitors that the glaciers would “all be gone” by the year 2020 due to global warming… because… it’s 2019, and the glaciers are all still there and have been growing.

Sorry to disappoint you, but you could warm up Antarctica by 100 degrees for 10,000 years and not make a dent in its glaciers. At its current rate (you're off by a factor of four), it would take 100,000 years to melt, but that rate would slow enormously as you, you know, start reacing the antactic circle, it gets harder and harder to melt. (Average annual temperature where the ice is melting from now: 40 degrees F... Average temperate in the larger of Antarctica: -100 F.

Netflix, given that the content keeps merely developing and other providers creating their own platforms. Already feel often bored zapping through the program.
