Things are changing so quickly that it’s hard to keep up! As the world becomes more and more interconnected, we become aware of all the ways that the rest of the world lives. Trends that might have been fated to stay local a few decades ago now go viral and spread around the globe, powered by social media and the news.

However, much of what we take for granted these days might not stand the test of time. The future might be radically different, and people living years from now might look back at 2022 with a lot of confusion (and probably judgment) about how we did things.

Internet users shared their thoughts about what trends will be the most regrettable in 20 years’ time in an interesting r/AskReddit thread, and we’re bringing you their best insights to get your noggins jogging. From gender reveal parties to denying climate change, some trends are pretty darn bad. As you’re reading, have a think about what fads and ideas you think will go the way of the dodo (i.e. extinct) in the near future, Pandas, and share your thoughts in the comments.

Pop culture and lifestyle expert Mike Sington, from LA, was kind enough to share his thoughts on current trends, what's here to stay, what will (hopefully!) go away, and how the people of the future might react to the fads of 2022. Check out Bored Panda's full interview with him.

This will be a ripple effect throughout crime, welfare and mental health. This is going to have a devastating impact on all communities, except for the politicians of course. They'll keep getting their back alley abortions and blaming other systems for crime rates rising and something else will be blamed for mental health issues and suicides.

And in turn, society will suffer as crime will increase due to these unwanted, unsupported children. The book Freakanomics discusses the correlation between abortion access and crime rates. Everything that can be impacted by this decision is fascinating and frightening. And all of this suffering and crime will continue to increase due to the cycle continuing if we cannot get women's rights back.

This should be number one. But also with a caveat that it’s just a frightening number of people in the USA actually CHOOSING to take things backwards in a horrifying way. This is not the case in most developed countries and we feel for the many Americans having to fight against such barbaric thinking.

I really don't think this is going to have an impact on the way countries outside of USA are going to approach abortion. Most countries are moving forward, not going back in time. I'm certain scotland will not be following their lead, we've made some rather big steps in becoming a fairer place to live from proving free period supplies and we're the first country to include LGBTQIA education from the earliest school years throughout - our path is very much different to USA, hell it's different to England that's next door. I feel absolute fear for women in states that are bringing in abortion restrictions and forced births, as women and the children will suffer in untold ways - bottom line is that abortion will not be stopped, only safe access to it and women will die. No woman wants to have to experience an abortion, and you truly don't know what you will do until faced with the reality

I would make those who came up with this law, carry a melon on their body for a months then have it shoved up their a*s and that wouldn't even be close to what some women experience during giving birth. And that is just a part of having a child, you still need to raise it. I became pregnant (had pills back then, and still) at 21, 2 months after moving to a new country, 1month into a new relationship, I could barely keep myself afloat- had an abortion, never regretted: didn't have a proper life, relationship proved to be a fail after 5 years, on bed terms,so one of my best choices so far. Ohh and guess what the doctors who tried to convince me to keep it, weren't even cool enough to realize I have a deformity (operable), which makes it impossible for me to carry out a child more than half way. So F those who came up with this idiocy!

Bored Panda asked pop culture expert Mike which current trends, in his opinion, probably won't stand the test of time. "Sharing personal photos of yourself, your life, your family, and especially your children will probably seem very peculiar in a couple of decades," he told us.

"People just now are becoming increasingly concerned about privacy on the internet, and it will be odd in the future to look back and see how much of ourselves we used to willingly share," Mike mused that, in the future, privacy will likely be a much greater concern than now.

Only happened once in Scotland - laws changed and hasn't happened since. Horrible things happen worldwide but that gun deaths are the top cause of death in children in America and still no restrictions are taking place just defies belief. American culture is so deeply flawed on so many levels yet the citizens are practically brainwashed into thinking they're better than everywhere else - from the outside looking in it's so very very disturbing - I do think people are slowly waking up to the reality but still so many believe the propaganda

It beggars belief, doesn't it? I live in the US and it is difficult to not either be constantly enraged or completely hopeless. Until something happens to stop politicians from taking "donations" from corporations and special interests, then I see nothing changing. Politicians have passed laws that have given corporations unparalleled power, and the corporations pay off the politicians. Our "democracy" is broken.

I've heard this statement before, and it really, really bothers me. The majority of people in this country want gun control. The MAJORITY. Since our politicians are corrupt, however, nothing is going to change. So we are held hostage by our own government, doing what we can in protests and in the voting booth, meanwhile we get to hear comments like yours..."Americans love guns more than their children". No, we don't. And to say such a thing is a slap in the face to every parent who has lost a child to gun violence, to every person who protests, to every person who lies awake at night wondering how they can make a positive change. Perhaps a more accurate statement would be "Some Americans seem to value guns more than the lives of children". And even then, that's a pretty damn sad statement.

In the pop culture expert's opinion, no matter how much time passes, humor is "here to stay."

"Funny thoughts, anecdotes, and memes are popular now, and will have staying power on the internet. People often go online for escapism, and humor has always provided that. I don’t foresee that changing," he said that humor itself is timeless. People will always want (and need!) to have a good laugh.

Meanwhile, we were curious to figure out how to tell if something's a long-term trend or just a passing fad that'll go away in just a few years or even months.

"If something becomes popular quickly and seems to come out of nowhere, it’s more likely to be a passing fad," Mike, Hollywood's Ultimate Insider, shared his thoughts with Bored Panda.

I think the problem with promposals is that there is yet another thing that is an expectation for a 'normal' high school experience, so those who don't get one are somehow lacking. Or that's what it seems like from me looking in from a country that doesn't even have a prom. Apart from debutant balls (which are thankfully dying out) it is perfectly common for high schoolers to attend dances without requiring a date, it's just somewhere you go to dance with your friends.

I still don't get why parents just don't want to wait to find out the gender when the baby is born. Not buying the reasons of picking out baby accessories and nursery decor being a factor. There's more colours than pink and blue, and there's no laws saying it's mandatory to assign a gender to colour. There was a time when all babies were dressed in white, frilly gowns, and a time when pink was considered masculine and a pastel version of red and represents strength and power, and blue was for girls because blue represents innocence and purity. At some point in the mid 20th century someone decided pink was for girls and blue was for boys and it's stuck in people's heads ever since.

Get a hobby, trust me. Find yourself, find what you want to do, find out who you are without being a mom. Your kid will grow up and then what? Be your own person without relying on your kids to validate you. (Please realize I’m not talking about every mommy blogger, just the ones who relate to this post.)

I think moms who make that their only personality trait are really sad and probably really insecure, and they're pushing their insecurities on to their kids. I'm so glad I grew up before social media.

Isn't there a spectrum instead of either/or? I think instead of a blanket ban, rather let's be explicit about those who treat their child's lives like an online reality show. I'm not very active on social media, but here and there I will post a picture of my daughter because she too is a beautiful part of my life. If a stranger gets to see it, that's fine with me. I get the negative sentiment, it's just that we have to remember that the internet, especially social media, is at least 16 years old and some people who are adults now were posted by their parents at the time. From my tiny little experience, I know of none of the now-grown kids in my life or the lives of people in my circles who have complained. We need to account for my why there isn't a major movement of blacklash against it by people who have been posted instead of what I take to be concern for kids being pushed too far. I stand to be corrected. One last thought, a blanket ban would have to be expanded to all media, including kids on TV or in movies or on advertisements. Hence I call for a spectrum and moderation in assuming everyone posting their kids online is insensitive and exploitative.

THIS. So many "celebs" posting picture after picture of their babies from birth. For endorsements, kickbacks, likes and freebies. YOU as the adult have a choice. Your baby/toddler/child does not. The whole frame who#@*s thing (males and females alike) and sticking a camera in your kids face constantly..... eewwww. Hope the money is still there when the poor child needs therapy.

The key is moderation. I have a family member who lives in a poor country and they have a terminally ill child. Treatment is expensive and found only in big cities, so again, rent and living there is more expensive than in a village. I think they started the blog first as a coping mechanism and later they were forced to ask for adoptions. It’s not an easy scenario. The ones who purely do it for the money and expose their kids, yes, I get the annoyance. But let’s not overgeneralise everything.

This needs to be higher on the list. Even white-knighting and pretending to be doing good things for likes is disgusting in the extreme. I am so very surprised that no arrogant, egotistical social media moron has been punched out or (in the US) shot. I'm guessing they size their targets up first, just like sharks or cutpurses.

Well, not until we develop genuine AIs that can take into account trillions of different factors and how they play off each other and connect into a dynamic, ever-shifting whole, but that probably won’t happen for quite some time yet. If parents want to drink alcohol responsibly then whatever. What's terrible is parents lying to their kids calling it "juice" or any form of it as juice. Just be straight with your kids. Call it wine. It's not like men have ever told their sons "Go fetch me my "Daddy cola" from the fridge". Talk to your kids about alcohol.

I don't mind the mummy needs wine stuff, I often joke that my kids drive me to drink but in reality I rarely drink these days - and I hate wine so guess I'm not a great example. We go to the local town pub quiz fairly regularly and often take our two youngest with us if the older two don't want to babysit - they see me and their dad have a few pints but it's not a big deal. Alcohol in general isn't seen as a massive deal in Scotland as long as you're not getting s**t faced in front of your kids every night. My oldest two are 16 and just turned 18 so oldest is legal go drink but I'll also buy my son drinks if he asks as I'd much rather know what they're drinking and how much than send them out to drink god knows what concoction their mates come up with - and Tim works, they've never went behind my back and I've earned their trust just as they've earned mine. If the worst thing a parent does is have a drink to unwind after a long day then I think they're doing a pretty good job

What irritates me are the Climate Change protesters who are double standards/hypocrites. Ones that will protest about homes needing to be insulated but they themselves live in a huge place by themselves or with a partner with no insulation or double glazing. Those who protest about oil usage yet will have several cars in their driveway or take multiple holidays a year flying to their destination. Those who did marches about recycling but left tons of rubbish/trash littering the streets.

Today I learned thst the US uses 1000 football fields worth of trees to make newspapers for “Sunday Editions” alone. Every. Single. Week. Further, discarded newspapers make up a massive portion of the methane gas that is emitted from landfills. There is really no good reason to have physical print newspapers in a country where over 97% of people own a cell phone and 85% own a smartphone. This could be legislated and make a major impact, but nothing will change.

Social media has its place. I use it to keep in touch with friends and family who are all now 5000 miles away since I moved to Spain. I also use it to keep track of goings on and available services in my area here where I moved. What I DON'T use it for is a daily ego boost or "influencer" platform. It's all in how you view social media. For me it's a tool.

Language evolves, it always has and always will, and that's OK. What annoys me is the fact that the German language, for example, is “losing” so many of their words,. People use English words instead of the perfectly fine already existing German words, it sounds terrible, and not as cool as people think. This is probably also true for other non-English languages that I don't speak.

Language has always been evolving. We don't speak the same we did 100 years ago, and people 100 years ago didn't speak the same as those who lived 100 years before them. That's what my English teacher told us. Seems like in modern times everything is evolving and changing more rapidly to the point it's harder for us to keep up.

... I still am somewhat baffled by how thoughtless people throw around their personal data, just because it's convenient and "Who don't commit any crime, has nothing to hide, nothing to fear!" - as if it were that simple. But today, those wet dreams of Erich Mielke aren't invading our privacy due to someone else's actions and desires - we (as a society, I personally don't to any social media) ourselves are it, don't hand it over to some government agency, which would be bad enough in and for itself, but to companies who, of course, only want our best - our money. Someone pays for data someone else collected and connected. Even with supposedly untracable things you can track down people, it's just more effort in relation to the actual information gathered. Bad enough without doing any, consenting to any - but people just ... seem not to care. But nobody effectively controls any of the agencies. No one can make sure that data that today ain't abused won't ever be.

Aaron Genest, from Siemens Software, explained to Bored Panda that we can get a good idea of what the future might hold, what technologies will be around, by looking ‘upstream’ in the investment space.

"For instance, it takes almost two years to develop and produce a computer chip and get it to market for a phone, and five years to get something into a new kind of car. So if we want to have a sense for what, for instance, the gadgets in our cars will look like in 2026, we just need to look at what the car manufacturers are asking their suppliers to design today,” he explained to Bored Panda earlier.

According to the tech specialist, industries that invest billions of dollars into particular technologies, e.g. 5G or particular chips, will want to recoup their investments. So it’s likely that the things they invested in will, at least in part, play some sort of role in the future of tech.

Straws are a red herring. The biggest single industry contributor to Ocean plastics is commercial fishing, responsible for 20% of the plastic in our oceans. The remaining 80% is plastics coming from rivers and coastlines. Notably, it isn't coming from the most developed countries, where waste management strategies are better. 81% of the plastic waste from rivers and coastlines comes from Asia, with the Philippines as the worst offender. Multinational corporations are flooding those emerging markets with single use plastic packaging despite the lack of recyling or waste management systems. Plastic straws are a problem for marine wildlife, but they're being used as a distraction, to take attention away from much larger sources of plastic pollution so that large multinationals can continue to profit at the expense of the planet.

When we go pick up plastic off the beach, about 50% of it is fishing equipment or other stuff from boats (or storms), about 40% is plastic bottles, and about 10% is the rest of it. The sheer amount of bottles is what surprises me. Two of us can fill a couple garbage bags in about an hour.

Paper straws annoy the heck out of me. Most places wont recycle them because theyve been "contaminated" and in our local council, if one is seen in our recycle bin the bin-men refuse to empty the bin. Same goes for cardboard "fast-food" containers and paper bags that have soaked up grease from whatever was inside. If you have to use a straw because of disability there are multiple types of cup lids available instead to turn it into a sip-i-cup type that doesnt spill. If not then put your big boy panties on and drink like an adult out of the cup/glass

Someone Asks What Current Trend Will Be The Most Regrettable 20 Years From Now, And 35 People Don't Hold Back Filming everything you do. I was born in the late 1980s and this is just so weird to me since I grew up in an era of film cameras where every shot counted. It's so bizarre seeing some of my coworkers in their twenties film an average workday at the office like it's some sort of tourist attraction. Why would you do this?

Why would we do this? Because we are now followed by several generations whose sense of identity and worth are determined by having their very existence validated by strangers. Such narcissism is fed by the fact that people's mundane lives are so f**king bland, they actually feel the need to express an interest and "like" or "follow" someone as literally buttered some toast / had a new haircut / owns a cute cat. It's pathetic beyond belief and the more competition for attention there is, the more people are compelled to make utter prats of themselves so that they stand out from the crowd. It's sad beyond belief. But that's where we are...

Meanwhile, Ramona Pringle, from the Creative Innovation Studio at Ryerson University revealed to Bored Panda some time ago that while we don’t know for sure what the future will hold, we can count on some trends to keep going strong: “We love stories, and we love to be part of something bigger than ourselves. Be it oral storytelling, books, blogs, movies, or video games, we’ve never lost our love of narrative.”

According to the expert, people will always look for ways to be together, to be connected to one another. We long for communal experiences, whether in concert halls, being entertained in giant arenas, or remotely.

“Immersion and interactivity have long been goals for creators and media makers when it comes to how technology can influence entertainment,” Ramona told us.

Oh, and even though you already pay a subscription, and have been watching programs we offer without commercials, we’re now going to show them with the most annoying, badly timed (like breaking away mid-sentence then not returning to that exact same point so we can hear the rest of that sentence), and long running blocks of the same commercials, over and over again, unless you pay us even more. You know, like free TV used to.

One upon a time we owned our cassettes, cd's , video tapes and dvd's. You paid for it once, and that was it. Unless your old copy wore out, or an updated version was released. Now....you own nothing. I always hear people say "I bought so & so's album", and then they pull it up on Spotify. No....you didn't buy anything. You paid a streaming service to give you access to an album, until they decide otherwise.

Why is it always an over compensation joke when you see a big truck? I have a big diesel truck, I haul heavy trailers all the time with it. Maybe, just maybe the guy you're making fun of needs that truck to do his job. Or like me, pulls 15,000 to 20,000lbs trailers on a regular basis. Or also like me has a small farm that requires a big truck to take large animals to the vet, or haul loads of feed and hay/straw back to the house. Just because you think it's unnecessary doesn't mean it is. Not everyone lives in an apartment in a metropolitan area without a need for a large truck.

We just got a full size truck because my 4yo son uses a wheelchair and walker so I need the space for those. Was stuck with a little four door sedan for a long time. Could barely fit his wheelchair in the trunk and had to take it apart every time. Miserable. I love this truck. Plus it works with alternative fuels. But I hate people like my uncle who literally only have a giant, gas guzzling vehicle because they can. Like my uncle seriously thinks it’s his right to pollute the earth because, “there’s no way humans could destroy the earth and anyone who thinks that is a self righteous a*****e!” He said that to me 15 years ago and I still remember it word for word.

It's the trucks that are clearly never used for truck things that really bother me. I frequently saw a truck a few years ago which was lifted to the clouds, I'm 5'2" and was looking straight at the tires. The tires had a barbed wire pattern on them... clearly the person wanted it to be a monster truck. But they never had anything in the back and yelled at people getting in to "be careful, don't scratch it, don't leave handprints"

One reason why so many are having a 4x4 is because they are tired of the state of the roads, potholes, speed bumps etc. One local government keeps trying to attract people to their area in electric cars, public transport and on bicycles. The roads are so bad with potholes it is unsafe on a bicycle, the speed bumps they installed are high enough that electric cars bottom out and the public transport is dire.

I think this depends on where you live. Some places like where I live in Ohio you almost need at least something all wheel drive. The weather here is very unpredictable. I work in healthcare so I can't just call into work because the roads are bad. I don't drive a big gas guzzler but I do drive a small all wheel drive SUV which I can change between 2 wheel drive (4 cylinder) or all wheel drive (6 cylinder) obviously I use the 2 wheel option as much as possible.

It makes the most sense to have a car for what you use it for the most, most childless people don't need big cars, let a lone a truck. Most families don't need trucks either. Rent/borrow one for the maybe one time a year you do need one. I'm willing to bet that what you save in gas money more than makes up for it.

Working in the chemical distribution: Glycerin USP/EP and Propylene Glycol USP/EP (the two main ingredients / aroma usually less than 1% // USP/EP = US or European Pharmacopoe = strongest regulated grade available for use in pharma and food applications) are proven to evaporate nearly residue-free and won't cause any harm if ingested (dose makes the poison). The main factor for health concerns are the aromas and their carrier substances.

The health issues were due to fake cannabis cartridges. Those approved for use are safe. They are not completely harmless but they are as harmful as having a heavy coffee habit (not to be underestimated) The object is harm reduction ie getting smokers to stop. Many can't completely give up but CAN switch. One thoracic surgeon said that switching to vaping could save up to a million lives over the next 20 years. My country is promoting them as a smoking cessation method now. We should wonder why there are so many stories about this and not about 'inhalators' for example which are essentially the same thing without a heating coil. They are a part of the existing NRT therapy and, despite not being taxed as cigarettes, are just as expensive as smoking. The profits are MASSIVE but vaping is cheaper than smoking by a LONG way. Another encouragement to switch..

wrong for the cigarette/tobacco: "From the 1890s onwards, associations of tobacco use with cancers and vascular disease were regularly reported" (wikipedia). The link between tobacco use and lung cancer was clearly made in 1950. .. tobacco use, not cigarette. And some recent studies claim that smoking shisha (pure tobacco) is higher in cancer risk. (but yeah, " nasty ingredients in cigarettes are in the filter," too)

“For the last decade, we’ve leaned into virtual reality because of how it enables both of these. We can step inside a world and have influence over it, and the story or experience that unfolds. I think one of the things we can expect moving forward is, in a sense, the opposite of virtual reality. Instead, more of an enhanced reality or fictional reality, wherein the entertainment isn’t in a headset, but instead, all around us.”

As technology advances, including augmented reality and mixed reality, I think we can expect that entertainment will be something we can engage with off of the screen, but out in the world, with characters and stories we can engage with throughout the day, or throughout our houses.” So while some fundamental things that people care about will remain the same, the way that we interact with the world—and each other!—can change incredibly rapidly.

Unfortunately our system is rigged more and more to prevent the majority of voters' voices from being heard. In presidential elections especially, if maps are drawn such that the majority of districts go to one candidate, that candidate will win the state and only votes for him count on the national level. All the other votes are thrown away. They'll go to the popular vote, but the popular vote doesn't count for anything. It makes it really hard to change things by voting. FYI, I'm speaking from a US state that has chosen to use an illegal map rigged for a republican win for our next election. The state and federal courts know about it, declared it illegal, and refused to have it changed before the election. It's not a guarantee that a republican will win of course, but it will be much harder for anyone not in their party.

The politicians themselves won't let it happen. They're the ones who keep the populace raging at each other in the first place and as long as the populace is raging at each other they will never recognize middle of the road politics and politicians.

If it happens, it will be without precedent because the boundaries are not geographical as much as rural Vs. Urban, and we all live next door to people with opposite political beliefs. What really worries me is the absolute disregard for democratic norms and the legalized corruption of US politicians.

News and Social Media are such a huge driver of this. So many people I know lean one way or another but can listen to the other sides ideas or at least have an understanding of why people feel a certain way. But so many news stories just amplify the worst elements on Twitter, or just have a clickbait title and then ten tweets from random people who agree with the title. I don't care what side you're on, our news is a bunch of click whores looking to sell ads for the next pharmaceutical garbage drug to come out

I started seeing this about 8ish years ago and was hoping that I'd be near death or dead (at first I was pinning it to about 50 years) by the time it got this bad. Unfortunately the mindset of the American public shifted in such a negative way in the last few years that I'm now worried that it will happen in 20 years or less.

The US was founded with a fundamental flaw that took four score and seven years and hundreds of thousands of lives to rectify (and it's still not really rectified). And those cracks have ever been present in our nation and they open up from time to time, without true resolution.

My daughter, aged 24, had Botox a couple of weeks ago. Apparently it's called baby Botox and is used as a preventative treatment 🤦‍♀️. I've never had any cosmetic treatments so this is 100% a social/cultural pressure. Who knows what this will do to her physically or emotionally in the coming years? I just kept thinking the price she paid could have gone some way to paying an energy bill this winter!

Or on anybody who really doesn’t need it. If you’ve had an accident or illness or some other misfortunes that has disfigured you and is affecting your self esteem, then by all means get as much cosmetic surgery, fillers, and Botox as you need. If it’s Body Dysmorphia, a mental/emotional issue, then get help, please! Otherwise, if you’re already good looking but maybe getting older, then why not age gracefully, especially if you’ve always taken care of yourself and don’t look your age? Yes, I know certain industries hate wrinkles and try to throw away anyone who has them, but that’s them and their f****d up view, not you. Stand up for yourself and threaten them with an ageism suit, then f*****g file it if they don’t back down. Lobby to end ageism (which would be a whole new career for you, btw), and let’s allow those with experience and wisdom to find/keep jobs and continue working until they’re comfortable retiring. Just because you’re old doesn’t mean you’re well off enough to retire, and even if you do retire it’s a gamble. Because you might outlive your retirement savings, and still have bills to pay that your Social Security check alone will not cover!

When I learned the Covid was a Coronavirus, in the family of the common cold, I knew that we would never get rid of it. Mutates too much, making vaccines effective in the short term but requiring multiple changing formulation over time. Plus all the antivax idiots contribute to limit further research. If we had taken it seriously for more than just a few months, we might have been able to limit the damage, but now that ship has sailed.

That's my concern. I caught covid from a coworker who refused to mask up whenever the boss wasn't around or practice social distancing. She came in sick with what she said was just a sinus infection. Spoiler - it wasn't a sinus infection. She made a full recovery but I got long covid with a permanently altered sense of smell. And I worry that in 15-20 years we're going to see an exponential increase in lung cancer and COPD due to covid lung, and I could end up with one or both. That's how it seems to work with those kinds of viruses that cause few symptoms in the majority of a population. Hopefully covid won't be that way.

I also gave fibromyalgia which has been tough the last few years, but given a lot of long term symptoms are similar to my lifelong condition it's hard to tell what is caused by what - but I am hoping that given the similarities more research will be done and treatments will be one more effective as right now the meds are almost as bad as the condition itself

For me minimalism is far more practical, enjoyable and simplifies life. Less physical clutter, less visual clutter, less cleaning and moving things around, less time searching for things, less to worry about. I find a minimalist room relaxing. I can understand it not being everyone’s aesthetic preference but to say there is a problem with the principle of it is just misguided.

Someone Asks What Current Trend Will Be The Most Regrettable 20 Years From Now, And 35 People Don't Hold Back Facebook has explicitly encouraged its users to break down privacy barriers between different aspects of their life, e.g. work, school, and family. This is not a theoretical effect but an intentional one; Zuck has explicitly said that in his view, people who maintain boundaries between different parts of their life "lack integrity" and that it's Facebook's goal to promote "integrity" in this specific sense. This is deeply dysfunctional. It's *normal* to have different social contexts in which you present yourself differently. That's how humans have always been, ever since we invented huts and can go inside a hut and be private with someone. Boundaries between different parts of your life are healthy. You get to decide who's allowed in your hut. Tearing down someone else's boundaries is a hostile act, not a friendly one. (LGBT+ people know this regarding "outing" someone without their consent.) It should be up to *you* to decide when you feel safe to bring down certain boundaries, e.g. to come out to your family as gay, to tell your coworker about your religious beliefs, or the like. Facebook is an institution that sees its purpose as including tearing down people's boundaries. That's a problem.

I am a trans man and omg. I can’t. Like every single day I have to wake up and realize my chest is still there. I have to wake up everyday and realize that I wasn’t born a cis man. And deal with all that gender dysphoria. And on top of that my parents don’t accept me! Like I’m getting no closer to getting a chest binder or any support. And if the world just accepted trans people it wouldn’t be like this. I’m not saying I want to have surgeries right now, but the very least you could do is use my pronouns and preferred name. Being trans is hard and then dealing with having no support systems? I can’t. I literally can’t. The amount of times I was so close to diy-ing my top surgery becuase I was just so done? I can’t. Just let me live my life in peace!! I just want to exist in peace just let me exists please. Stop being transphobic there’s nothing wrong with us.

What people don’t seem to realize is this: you do not have to agree with someone 100% in order to give them the rights they deserve. You don’t have to be ok with someone’s beliefs or outlook or gender identity, BUT you do NOT get to harass them, strip them of their humanity, murder them, r**e them, humiliate them, beat them, etc. They literally have no effect on your life.

I don’t think the majority want to harass, dehumanise or beat trans people. But there are legitimate concerns in areas like competitive sports that do need to be resolved. If someone has gone through male puberty, they will have different musculature and skeletal differences to a genetic female. If a 230lb 6ft person wants to identify as female, I have no issues. If they then want to play rugby or football against people who are genetically female, I do. Even if only for safety reasons. Reducing testosterone levels doesn’t negate physiological differences.

I fully support people being whatever they want to be and I will consider them whatever gender they feel fits them - I've no trouble distinguishing identity from genetics. What I don't like, which I'm not convinced is a thing from transgender people themselves but the weird offended by everything crowd, is the idea that it's no longer ok to say things like pregnant woman, breastfeeding etc as that excludes trans people. I don't see why I suddenly have to change how I refer to myself as it's now offensive, why is it offensive? Is this really something that's a thing or is it just a made up drama to bring anti-trans feelings? I fully understand still having the opposite sexual organs for your internal body image is difficult, and that's why therapy is essential to cope throughout the transition - and some conditions will always be gender specific - a genetic male isn't going to have cervical cancer, or a female prostate - it's just part of their genetics, separate from identity

Like imagine if you just give them the rights they deserve... then everyone can just go back to being regular members of society and all this protesting can stop... refusing them their rights is only going to make them louder. AS THEY SHOULD BECAUSE THEY DESERVE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE.

Having bad teeth isn't just a cosmetic issue bad teeth can lead to a multitude of health problems including damage to your heart.

Veneers aren't bad if they are to fix a few teeth with issues. A whole mouthful that looks like an advert for Daz washing powder just looks ridiculous. The worst however is people having crowns rather than veneers where the literally have to cut away a part of a healthy tooth to fit a crown. Go look up Turkey Teeth to see what I mean.

Getting veneers is not as brutal as this person makes it. They're not "sawing down teeth"- the outer layer of enamel is roughed up, similar to how a nail is roughed up for better bonding. We're talking less than half a millimeter of enamel.

I got them on two teeth only due to them being damaged at work. I think the OP is thinking more of crowns. There's been an outcry over 'Turkey Teeth' lately. They are badly done and are too white to look real. Luckily mine match my existing teeth and still look natural..

99% of the Z list reality stars in the UK go to Turkey for their cosmetic surgery these are known as "Turkey teef" and they are blindingly obvious. My barber was telling me there are deals to be had on hair transplants for as little as £1500 for the flight , hotel and surgery, amazing price but again the result may be a little too obvious.

It is telling when the professionals who work in network security keep as much of their life offline as possible. 15 years ago, when a company contact balked at including his work email in a registration because of what he knew from his time in the NSA, I thought he was just overreacting. Now, I understand.

Meh I'm not sure about that. I'm very careful about my online safety, but when it comes to big data, it's usually very useful for everyone involved and the privacy breach for individuals is minimal (if any). E.g. you wouldn't know about traffic on google maps if most users didn't allow google to track them. There's plenty of dangers online, but I don't think this is the one that we should be focusing on.

Use an alias (or "pen name") on social media. Make everything private and give access only to people you trust. Even that with maximum caution. The only reason I am on Facebook is because my mother lives a couple of continents away and wanted to keep in touch. I called her and told her I am using a different name. She wasn't happy, but I have been working online for too long to use my real name, have my photo taken and posted or publish any personal information.

Someone Asks What Current Trend Will Be The Most Regrettable 20 Years From Now, And 35 People Don't Hold Back A lot of parenting and schooling trends will change. Just look at now vs 20 years ago. Gentle parenting is big right now. The idea is fine but it leads to permissive parenting in most of the cases I worked with in daycare and as a nanny. Not telling children “no” like ever. Not letting them fail. It’s going to lead to a lot of anxiety and stress in future children when things don’t go great. Although it’s been getting better I still think the amount of homework some kids get is ridiculous. Specially younger children. I nanny a 4 year old. She’s still in pull ups and learning how to wipe. She doesn’t need homework from preschool.

I believe that homework is just a failure of the educational system. Kids already spend 40h in school. They should have minimal homework or none. Imagine if most adult people needed to work 40h plus every evening and part of the weekends for free. Unpaid overtime is a problem in adults but nobody realises that thats what the schools are forcing on children as well

Each extreme is damaging. Kids need discipline, but that doesn't mean yelling at them or worse, hitting them or belittling them. Fair and consistent boundaries is what's about. Some level of competition is OK, not everyone is a winner at everything. Yet losing is not the end of the world if you did your best. It's not rocket science, but it may as well be for some people.

I'm somewhere in between as a parent. I'm very much a pick your battles type of parent - some things are important and others you let slide for a home environment that isn't hell on earth. As for homework I don't force my kids to do it, my oldest son has adhd, my youngest is definitely the same, it's like having a clone of the oldest which is weird as different dads who are nothing alike so definitely from my side of the family. But homework became the bane of my existence, the tantrums, meltdowns, tears etc weren't worth it - then I had his teacher saying getting him to do a small task wasn't a big deal - I tore that woman a new one, which was long awaited as she taught me in primary school as was the never wrong, wouldn't budge type of teacher, even when she clearly was wrong.

Someone Asks What Current Trend Will Be The Most Regrettable 20 Years From Now, And 35 People Don't Hold Back The destruction of public education (squeezing and outright sabotage of public schools, prohibitive costs for secondary education). The normalization of being undereducated either through apathy or because of forces outside your control. The idea that opinion is equal to fact and that sticking to your original viewpoint is heroic. "Yeah, your studies may say that, but this is how I FEEL about it" and similar arguments. The reason we are no longer a minor species of omnivorous hunter-gatherers is our ability to pass along knowledge to others. Each generation building on the achievements of prior generations is the path to progress in health, quality of life, equality, production and so much more. Worse yet, technology now is at a level where if the masses are uneducated, they are also powerless. Small groups of people with specific knowledge have become outrageously powerful and this gap in individual power will only get worse with advances in fields like AI and robotics. If we allow whole generations to grow up undereducated, it will be very difficult for them to understand and affect their world. I feel the exponential growth of wealth gaps across the world is a symptom of this deliberate enforced ignorance.

They were kept uneducated to keep them in line, controllable, and automatically deferring to the whims of the educated, who were generally members of the wealthy classes and the upper echelons of the dominant religion. Once the masses became educated, they became aware of how poorly, cruelly, and unfairly they were being treated, and took the first steps toward gaining the freedoms we possess—-but for some reason do not seem to cherish enough to fight tooth and nail to keep—-and consider the norm today.

I hate hate hate this idea that opinions hold the same value as facts - that's just so very incorrect. Facts don't give a c**p about your opinion, emotions or other differing views. Facts are facts. The worlds knowledge is literally at our fingertips and yet ignorance is astounding - twisting facts and outright b******t in order to back up your opinion is rife and so very dangerous- just look at the response to covid. Gone are the days when people respected educated experts in their chosen field, now this very specific brand of arrogant I'm better than you with access to google thinks a few minutes online outweighs decades and decades of research, education, experiments and studies - by all means ask questions, educate yourself on subjects but for the love of jeebus believe the people who have made their life work in the field and have the facts to support them. Confirmation bias is truly a pandemic in itself

This is why we pulled our kids from public school and are now home schooling them. They both go on and on about how they have learned so much more than all the years they were in public school and we have only been doing it for a year. Public school is severely broken. I have lots of teacher friends and they agree.

I would love to see Montessori schools normalized, free and wide spread. There are a lot of kids who would benefit greatly. The sit-at-your-desks-and-shut-up approach while the teacher yammers on and on, or makes you write notes for hours and hours, should be abolished. Although I wouldn't make a great teacher, I imagined if I were I would be making up games and interactive activities, to go along with the curriculum being taught. Make it super enriching and engaging for all the students that they would have too much fun to be daydreaming or sleeping, like I used to.

My country has a rule where naming your child (if they are to be a citizen here) something that doesn't exist is forbidden. Like by law "Sansa" or "Daenerys" would not be accepted as a name. If you want a name that is not registered as an official Czech name, you have to prove the existence of said name anywhere else in the real world. I could name my child Jennifer, but i need to prove that Jennifer exists.

It's just letters and sounds arranged the way a parent my like to hear it. If the kid doesn't like their name.. where I'm from they can change it and even ask the school to call them by a different name.

I don't know about elsewhere, but in Australia we have a 'religious freedoms' bill that was introduced last year (or year before, I forget) that would allow religious schools to expel trans students and teachers if they find out (if the way it was explained to me was correct). Thankfully, it wasn't passed when introduced due to backlash and politicians conscious votes, but it was shelved for further consideration (so the government at the time wouldn't have that against them during the election). With the new government we haven't heard any more about it.

Well I don't know about concrete laws, but several bills in the USA. Basically though most of them are making it EXTREMELY difficult for transgender people (Mainly children) to get the medical supplies and information they need to help them transition. And then there's Texas, arresting parents/guardians that helped their children transition (Hormones, hormone blockers, etc.).

That's never going to change nor is it going to be a "regrettable" trend because it's been a thing for as long as social media has been around. 20 years ago we were chatting on message boards, 15 years ago we were all on facebook, 10 years ago everyone was on twitter...all that's going to change is who dominates what platform.

The problem now is, amongst several things, Tik Tok challenges. Children are very impressionable. They want to fit in. And, unfortunately, they are obsessed with likes and shares. Children have been, and will continue to get, seriously injured or die because they want that viral video.

This is the most astonishing thing for me to witness. I grew up in a household that didn't allow me to use the internet without my mom being right there with me, and I was only allowed to use it for school research projects, and even that was an issue for my folks. According to them, the internet was just a magnet for perverts and 99% porn sites. I didn't even know what a web address was. Today, parents barely know what all the apps and sites they're kids have an account with, and some are getting right in there filming and blogging all the embarrassing things happening with their kids for the world to see. It makes me scared where those videos and pictures are ending up.

I have no problem with young people under 18 being on the internet. Should the requirements of some Apps/portals be stricter ... definitely. Some portals require identification such as an ID card number, in order to be able to verify the authenticity of the stated age. I would like this method to be used on other Apps/portals as well.

This seems a bit much. Like no, Sally who is 7 doesn't need an Instagram account, and Bobby who is 13 doesn't need to live on Facebook. But not letting them (Or "us" in this case, since I'm still a minor) use social media until they're 18 is setting them up for failure. It'll probably overwhelm them and they may get a bad image of social media forever.

Oof. I'm so torn on this. I tried everything - the patch, gum, medication - and nothing helped me quit. I started vaping, gradually dropped the cigarettes, and then gave up vaping entirely. My boyfriend was able to stop smoking cigarettes through vaping too. I get it's not safe, and I would never recommend anyone take up either smoking OR vaping, but I do think it can be helpful for cigarette smokers who want to quit.

Someone said it! We humans have been addicted to nicotine for a loooong time. And it seems like as time goes on we will find healthier or less harmful ways to continue this chemical dependence. Vaping is just a stepping stone in that process. Opium is a great example of this process!! We are STILL using it today. And it's still a problem, it's just better regulated.

I mean, I understand these things are addictive and hard to quit, but I truly don't understand why anyone chooses to start. No it's not, would you rather inhale smoke from a burning wheat field or vapor from a fog machine? There is a vast amount of research supporting vaping as the least damaging of the two by far. In fact, I am yet to see a reputable paper showing negative impact even close to 10% of smoking burnt plant matter. Obviously, doing neither is best, but one is not like the other.

Someone Asks What Current Trend Will Be The Most Regrettable 20 Years From Now, And 35 People Don't Hold Back House/furniture/thrift items being flipped for a profit. 1. The amount of failed flips I see online is ridiculous. Cut corners, trendy designs, and sub par work done by people who sometimes have no previous background. In 20 years flipped houses will be the new "why did they cover the wood floor in vynil, and why did they carpet the bathroom," just on a much bigger scale. 2. Everyone assumes that you're a reseller and you wanna take their $30 coffee table and slap some black paint on it and try to resell it for $300. Walking into a thrift store and trying to find some affordable cute clothes? Nice try, we know you're just gonna sell it online so what used to be a $3 shirt is now $15! Its ridiculous. It's not sustainable when used or flipped items cost almost as much as new ones.

However I you can upgrade a worthless product and put it back on the marked in a state where it is actually useful for someone, I think it is a great idea. That is a much better solution, than constantly producing more and more stuff. So if you put in the effort of sanding down and painting an old item, why shouldn't you be allowed to sell it at a profit? You put in work, and I think that is worth paying for.

Our house was flipped to sell and it was a safety nightmare. The only thing I’m glad they did was paint the walls and change the floor as that lasted us a few years. We nearly fell through the shower floor as they’d tiled onto the chipboard below and hadn’t waterproofed anywhere. The floor was springy! I’d never buy a flipped house, buy a dump a bit cheaper and renovate properly and safely.

We had similar issues. It wasn’t fully flipped but the guy who lived here before us clearly tried to do some work by himself with no contractor. Bathroom floor has grout splotches everywhere, shower was not done properly and we are actually scared to pull it out 😬

It used to be something that brought people who couldn't afford new things the joy of owning something new (for them) *I almost exclusively wore thrift items as a kid because we couldn't afford new clothes* and now it's just rich kids trying to look edgy. The poor can't even afford to wear poor people clothes anymore. I find it disgusting actually.

Surely the mullet is lower down this list and I haven’t seen it yet? It’s always been a haircut in Australia but it’s particularly popular right now and looks as hideous as it did in the 80’s. The fuckboy haircut fittingly instills worldly confidence whether you’re attending college or climbing up the corporate ladder. Although we are saving paper, sure, and giving one more convenient way for submission of assignments, it has skyrocketed kids’ level of screen time, and often students find ways to be off task or download programs to occupy their time. Use of printed materials and referencing books is now being skipped as students believe everything can be found online (it can’t, and is not scrutinized for accuracy like printed materials). Furthermore, even amongst my “high achieving” students, information retention has dropped dramatically, as students are no longer getting the kinesthetic memory practice of copying notes or answering questions on paper as they used to. Yeah Covid ruins everything, and yes kids need to be adept with technology, but there is definitely a brain drain I think is dramatically linked to the heightened reliance on personal devices.

I'm fairly certain a similar argument would have been made when every student got their own textbook instead of just listening to the lecture and copying down everything important. That having their own copy of the textbook would make it more likely that a student would slack off in class because they can simply review the information on their own time. Education trends are always going to change and someone is always going to be upset about it.

While the amount of knowledge stored in an older person sometimes astonish me, I think that many of the skills that have now disapeared have done so for a good reason. E.g. my farther has memorised the "big table" and that has undoubably been useful for him several times. However he is of a time where almost no one could afford a calculator so knowing that kind of things was useful. Nowadays, all of us have acces to a pocketsize calculator almost instantly, and don't need to do complicated calculations in our heads. So the time spend on memorising tables of numbers can be spend smarter.

The problem is the pace of technological progress. Sooner or later auto manufacturers will realize how much people hate having to stop the car and page through menus on a touch screen to access simple features. When they come to their senses, used cars with screen-only interfaces will lose desirability. Anybody who is in the market for a vintage Mustang knows what they're getting into, and the radio is irrelevant. I've always been a fan of radio-delete cars, less things that can go wrong.

Is mining for oil much better? And what about the oil spills/dumps? ...they are not exactly what you would call without an impact on the enviroment. You cannot just point out the cons of one technology without putting them next to similar effects that the competing technology is causing. It is true that some of the electricity is suplied via fossil fuel, but for a fossil car it will be all of the energy it consumes that comes from that. We currently see more and more green technology in the marked, especially solar is on the rise right now, and at certain locations it can become a significant fraction of the electricity that is green. And regarding the resuability of electric cars it is simply not true that the cannot be resused. You can "mine" the worn out batteries and regain the lithium.

Yes they aren't going to save the world however it is a step in the right direction with more and more countries having the infrastructure for more and more renewables hopefully soon we will be able to claim that the cars are charged with 100% renewable energy sources.
