Time waits for no man, nor anything really. Use, neglect, or just the simple passing of days and years, inevitably, end up leaving a mark on everything and everyone. Like a canyon being worn down by the flow of water over thousands of years, everyday use can leave its own impact, from grove marks to wear and tear.

People across the net share the interesting effects of time and use on everyday items. While not intentional, the incremental, tiny changes add up, creating a sort of organic, new art. So get comfortable, settle into your favorite chair, and scroll through. Upvote the most interesting examples and be sure to comment your thoughts below.

It just happens. I don't own a car, but I know how this works. You get it there for some reason, and then every day you think "Okay, I will get it out tomorrow". But it doesn't happen until you have to do a capital cleaning/repairs on your car.

My dogs do something similar...No matter where the are in the yard, when I call them they always walk to the center of the yard and make a right angle turn onto a path they've worn and follow it to the house. That part of the yard is wide open and the house is clearly visible. It's funny to watch them make that sharp turn and "merge" onto the path.

Time really doesn’t treat everyone and everything equally. By one’s late forties, it’s easy to see what people have “aged well” or “aged poorly,” while in objects, certain materials hold up a lot better than others. A car, left in a field for decades will inevitably begin rusting down into nothing over time, while plastic and glass, unless there is some significant force, will be around for centuries.

Some of the largest examples of this are in nature, where water, wind, and sun have been steadily working before we had even emerged from the oceans. The Grand Canyon, for example, took the Colorado River around five to six million years or “work,” wearing down rocks piece by piece.

Would it keep it's form with the wind blowing it or is it more likely it swings this way after being used (more force behind the swing). I'd expect the links to act as joints in the wind, not makkng a straight line 🤔

    Marcellus II

The wind isn't pushing on one point, it's pushing equally hard on each link and on each part of (one side of) that link.

I'd suggest it's not wind blowing the chains, but people releasing the chain when unhooking it. When you let go from the hook over on the door, it swings down and then back and forth. Otherwise, you're regularly getting gale force wins targeted on that door...

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand." "I suppose you are real?" said the Rabbit. And then he wished he had not said it, for he thought the Skin Horse might be sensitive. But the Skin Horse only smiled. "The Boy's Uncle made me Real," he said. "That was a great many years ago; but once you are Real you can't become unreal again. It lasts for always."

This reminds me of something that happened when I was a kid. We were visiting family friends. Me, my brother and their daughter were playing in the living room and I went past a table with a framed school pic of my friend on it. As I went by, I realized at a certain angle there was suddenly a man's face in the pic. It took up the entire frame. Scared the heck out of 10 yr old me. I went and got my friends mom and showed her. She was spooked too. Then realized the frame used to hold a pic of her dad, my friends grandpa. It had that pic for several years and the image must have burned into the glass. The weird part was no one noticed before I did that night.

Physicists and other scientists call this particular phenomenon entropy, as new matter or energy is never created, but everything slowly breaks down over time. Originally used in thermodynamics, most people know it from everyday occurrences in nature. Mountains get shorter, cliffs erode and dunes are slowly washed away.

Queen Elizabeth I- had smallpox as a child and used white makeup to cover up the scarring. The concoction of the Venetian Ceruse she used contained lead, a poisonous heavy metal. This lead lead to hair loss, skin shedding and loss of cognitive abilities over time. Also cleaning off makeup was not a common practice. It is believed when she died, she had about an inch of the makeup caked on.

Years ago, people would cut the old paint off of the railings and fixtures in automotive paint booth and make jewelry out of it. Today's water based paint doesn't leave that residue. If someone were to take this and make jewelry out of it, it would be fantastic!

No, yeah no. I've used abrasives on my glazed porcelain dishes and the glaze is now wearing off in some small areas. Since porcelain is porous, it allows bacteria to be trapped and increases the risk of serious infections. Technically I do need to replace those dishes.

Other examples are more about satisfying human curiosity. From food items stashed away for decades to years of dust creating rug-like layers, most people might find these sorts of edge cases interesting, as we tend to not encounter them on a daily basis. It might be a great way how to satisfy that childhood curiosity of “What if?”

They leave their scent each time which then attracts them back. If you put something like peppermint or lemon scent on the post the first few times the cat uses it, they will be put off.

As Geoffrey Chaucer wrote, “Time and tide wait for no man,” which is a good lesson to remember, regardless of what you do, time will pass. An older form, “And te tide and te time þat tu iboren were, schal beon iblescet,” has been attributed to an 11th-century manuscript, but regardless of authorship, the idea stands. Most people prefer to not think too much about aging, but it’s unhealthy to deny the fact that we will age.

I'm scared of four-leaf clovers. I've only found one in my life but that might be because I never looked again. It was June 10th 1975, we were having a day out in the forest. I showed it to my daddy because I was so excited. Two days later, June 12th, he died. I know that the four-leaf clover had nothing to do with that but I've been scared of them ever since.

So the images here also can be seen as quasi-educational, showing precisely how time (and tides, for that matter) wear things down. If you start to look carefully, you’ll find examples in most parts of life, from paths etched through grass where people want to cut a corner, to certain buttons in elevators being pressed significantly more frequently.

There’s never been a true communist state. What they had wasn’t actual communism. You might want to educate yourself on what that actually means. Also, what people are pushing for, now, is democratic socialism, which is not the same thing at all. Many countries successful employ democratic socialism, yet you lot love to ignore all of their successes. You point toward old systems that have nothing to do with anything because you don’t know what you’re talking about and you don’t have an actual valid argument.

Many of the examples here focus on paint, from graffiti to interior design. While each layer might seem tiny, just a millimeter thick, these pictures show just how quickly they add up. Jerry Seinfeld had a bit describing how repainting his apartment always made him nervous, as he could feel it “closing in” around him.

The ammonia in cat pee can strip wood. Friends mom - 70s - house with beautiful hardwood floors that she kept immaculate. Same woman 50 years later - she became crazy cat lady and had about 45 cats when she died. Cats pissed everywhere. House so bad you needed a respirator for the ammonia smell. Those beautiful wood floors were literally stripped to bare wood by the pee. It also rusted the paint off the heater vents. The difference was astounding.

Seeing some of these images shows that in the long run, he is right. If a landlord (or series of landlords) are lazy enough, they will just paint over the previous layer, year by year. While this might actually help with insulation, the tenant is technically paying for a slowly shrinking apartment, which, at the very least, is an interesting metaphor for the housing crisis.

Bronze statues are a testament to middle school humor living on in the brain long after middle school. If it has boobies or a butt they are usually shiny. But I kind of go "Daw!" inside when I see animal ones where you can tell everyone gives it a pat on the head because the head is all shiny in the places you might pet a dog or cat.

One other fringe benefit is it’s a good way to see what products and brands know how to pass the test of time. Sadly, a lot of modern products are woefully designed and break down after a few years, if not a few months of use. Lists like this help separate the actually quality items from cheap copies.

I was thinking Europe, or at least a country where they drive on the left side, only because people tend to have walk patterns in crowds that mimic driving patterns. Assuming stairs get more worn by going down (the weight of the person hitting the stair), then this picture would show people descending on the right side, ascending on the left, whereas in America, people tend to ascend on the right side, descend on the left. Thoughts?

It happens when a right handed person has their phone on the left side of the desk. They pick up the phone with their left hand and, while transferring the phone to their right hand, spin it towards themselves. Then, when the call is finished, they pass it back to their left jand to hang up. This creates a 360 degree spin each time they use the phone.

I don’t know how many people that visit are from countries that drive on the left. I am and I’d walk on the left, leaving the right for people overtaking me. Surely most people scared of heights (brave enough to go to the top) would go up and down on the elevator rather than walk all the way down.

Here are the numbers from 2015 : https://fr.statista.com/statistiques/474860/visiteurs-nationalites-tour-eiffel/   Since then, the number of Chinese tourists in France (and all around the world) increased greatly, while the number of Indian or UK tourists not so much. In 2022, half of the visitors were from the EU, with the UK slightly decreasing comparing to 2015. Most of the people who visit the tower are from countries where you drive on the right, and this has been the case for a long time.

I read somewhere (not sure if true) that bank tellers and people who handle large amounts of cash have to take drug tests with a little level of indicator because the amount they absorb from the bills would cause them to test positive.

Not to mention what it does to the body. I worked in a factory once. There were women who had been there for 30 years doing riveting piecework. Their backs and shoulders were all hunched up.

Yeah, careful guys with ergonomics at work. My hands ache, just looking at his posture. There are simple rules, that any respectable boss should actively enforce, for the good of the people. I now work in Germany, and oh boy I was never so well cared for. Really, look into ergonomics regulations, you'll never want to go back.

I'm not sure if you should be pissed because you thought you were buying a garment 'new' or impressed that the clothing was 'reworked' and not thrown into a landfill or shipped to a third world country. I would be leaning to the later personally. Impressive.

I got those too .... sure we wear them. Warm in winter, cool in summer. Quick to dry when wet. They can be used everywhere (though not in house i'd say) They are also approved safety wear so there are folks on all kinds of industries that use them on the job as well. They only time -i think- they suck are in the snow. They are warm enough, but the build-up under the sole is huge.

I believe that the Dutch version was originally intended to prevent foot injuries from being stepped on by milk cows. There is also a Danish version which are part leather with a steel toe. These are a general outdoor shoe, meant for getting dirty and for kicking rocks. When I was a kid, some other boys and I would get on the swings at the playground and see who could launch their clogs the farthest. Mine made it clear across the street and into someone's yard.

That's what the rear tires looked like on my truck the day I bought it. Smooth flat rubber, no steel or kevlar belt showing. I drove straight from the farm where I bought it to a tire shop. To this day (roughly 15 years later) when the fronts wear out and I go for new ones, the shop will rotate the partially worn rears to the front, and put the new tires on the rear. I've never needed to buy more than 2 tires at a time. Which is good, because the least expensive name-brand tires that fit are over $200 apiece.

To elaborate on the other comments, even though plastic lasts for a long time, it doesn't last in its useful state for a long time. Plastics tend to become brittle with age, as the chemicals that keep them flexible (called plasticisers) leech out. That's one of the contributing factors to the cloudiness too, though there's also quite a bit of scratching. Once it's gone brittle, especially with scratching there too, one good knock will break it like glass.

Possibly a bit of both. Sun will cause plasticiser (the stuff that makes plastic pliable) to leech out faster, and any knock will break it. Even if it's not dropped, you can see 'fracture' lines on older plastic where the plasticiser has gone from it.

I've hiked most of Zion, the chain is on a hike that requires walking on a tiny lip of rock with a sheer cliff face...so ya hold onto the chain as you go. And yes, the chain gets really hot as it sits in the sun. So hold the hot chain or fall down the side of a sandstone cliff.

From Reddit: It's Sellotape, which is cellophane, which is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture. When it does, it swells. When it swells, it has to go somewhere. So the tape crinkles / buckles on one edge, eventually, and that it the side it starts moving towards.

This particular item is a year old. If you follow the link back to the original reddit post, it's not "abandoned", it's just been parked unused and neglected since 2014. It was registered nonoperational at that time. It looks like it was parked because it failed an emissions test, and the owner never got the money or the motivation to get it fixed. Something I can completely relate to.

Is it more chocolate or bloom at this point? Should still be safe, might taste funny though. Quite sure that you could reincorporate the bloom, just not sure how.

That's definitely not pure chocolate. Pure chocolate doesn't go bad. It can get this white powdery coating on it, but if it's stored properly, nothing like that.

Sadly it's a complicated process. 1 -Go to your local shopkeeper and say "Sir/Madam, I require lactose. Cow preferably" 2 -Hand you the grocer your ration voucher for your allotted weekly milk supply. 3 -Step back from the counter while they process the order and confirm the voucher's authenticity 4 -The shop keeper will hand the order form to a lower ranking employee who will take the tram to the back of the store's dairy section 5 -Move to the left and stand in line behind the other awaiting milk lovers 6 -Approximately 30 minutes (metric minutes) later over the speaker you will hear your order number over the PA system 7 -Proceed to the counter to fill out your D1M48J6 Milk receipt (Make sure to retain your copy for tax purposes) 8 -Receive your bags of milk and place them in your government issued reusable carrying tote. 9 -At home place the milk in your reusable 6L milk dispenser. Save the bags (again for tax purposes). Use as needed. 10 - Enjoy! It`s all you get this week!

Until now, I had completely forgotten that foam soda bottle labels used to be a thing. I would have to peel them off, before tossing the bottle into the correct 55 gallon drum for the color, (brown, green, or clear) and then crushing them into tiny pieces with a 10# dirt tamper. Circa 1973.

And the really fun part is that it's soaked into the structure of the house, and just painting over it is not enough to prevent it from leaching back into the living space. You need to use a sealing primer, or nicotine and other toxic chemicals can seep back through ordinary paint. A shellac or lacquer primer will do the trick. But those walls will still be toxic when the time comes to tear them down. And that goes for the floors and subfloors under the carpets as well. And the linoleum in the bathrooms.

Not from a smoker. White plastic yellows over time. Notice the ceiling is not yellow (unless it was just painted, it too would have nicotine muck on it). That's why old computers, video games systems, toys etc all look off white or cream/yellow.

They very best footwear ever, I've have them in many colors and styles. The ones with fleece inside super cool for winter when I've to take doggy for a last toilet walk that takes 10 minutes. Boots take too long to put on and take off. CROCS rock. My bud Chihuahua hates snow and rain so these shoes are just perfect, quickly on quickly off.

That's encouraging that they last that long. My feet are swollen, and I wear Crocs.

There's a bookstore in Brownwood, Texas which was a theater during WWII. Soldiers would come in to town, buy a ticket, and sleep. You can see a progression of head marks going up the wall.

I've been using the disposable sheets and washing blues, reds and whites together for years with no stain. I need the reuseable one too. https://carbona.com/products/laundry-care/color-dirt-grabber-reusable/ https://www.amazon.com/Carbona-Color-Grabber-Reusable-1-Count/dp/B000J2OAYQ

It's a pity the don't exist here in this form, the ones we get are in some artificial textile that can use a few times before u have messed up laundry.

Hm. Doesn't match the theory of holding on to the handrail with right hand in one of the posts above

Those were ship stairs, which are much steeper than a normal staircase and would more likely necessitate the use of handrails. This post is of an escalator, whee you're not actually walking up/down, so are less likely to use the handrail.

Apparently, if you step onto the escalator with your left foot, you step off with your right.
