Peculiarly, I live in a small village where a lot of the locals know me, and I find that reassuring. We talk or wave every time that we pass, and the tourists and other blow-ins say nothing. I think it's the combination of community with the rural person's understanding of space...

A really good teacher will know the difference between ”shy” and knowing when a person is just comfortable being quiet. There is a huge difference!

To those people complaining about the times you need help, this is EXACTLY how it should be. Speaking for both introversion and efficiency, you should only have to call upon someone when you actually need help. Then when they do help you, they do it as quickly as possible, so they can get back to overseeing a half dozen other shoppers who might need them. The alternative is faking a smile to a cashier forcing small talk and judging your purchases - not always silently - forcing you to buy a bunch of c**p you don't need in hopes of distracting them from the wart cream and 50 Shades book you came in for.
