There’s always something we don’t like. I can’t stand the taste of beetroots, while my best friend is basically allergic to licorice. Food is just one category where people often express their dislikes, but we see the same bursts of loathing anywhere from the animal kingdom to leisure activities. A relative of mine couldn’t stand stepping into a boat, or rather even the thought of it.

But when you stop and think about the things humans address their hate towards, you start wondering about the reasons why. Maybe we’re simply scared of the unknown (yes, tarantulas, we’re speaking of you!) or maybe it’s our past experiences that haunt us to this day.

In any case, today is the perfect time to step back and reflect on these things. Thanks to these two thought-provoking Reddit threads (here and here) where people listed all the things that don’t deserve the hate they get, we have a lot to uncover!

People Name 50 Things That Should Not Be So Universally Hated But Somehow Are Homeless people. It doesnt matter how they lost their home, it doesnt matter if they suffer from an addiction, it doesnt matter if they have a job or not. People have unspoken challenges that you dont know about, and they may have never happened to you, and its none of your damn business why theyre homeless. Housing should be considered a human right, and the fact this is still up for debate bothers me. I've seen how small bachelor pads can get, people really dont need much to survive.

Also, people act as if housing being a human right somehow infringes on their ability to buy property, when it doesnt. It just means those that are less fortunate literally just *CANT* be homeless and would be accommodated with the basics for human survival like running water, power, insolated walls and a bed. The fact that housing has been treated as profitable to exploit the lower class, is the reason we have homeless people. Not because of your pre-conceived idea of their life you know nothing about.

any animals that are seen as automatically evil or bad. some example would be wolves, black cats, sharks, snakes, etc. these same thoughts cause those animals and more to be harmed and hunted simply for the belief that they are bad/bring bad omen. it’s sad to see.

They get a bad rap because their first defense is to hiss and bare teeth, but failing that, they just play dead.

Wolves they are always the villian of the story but in real life they are scared of humans and they have every right. Just a few weeks ago a lot people killed a lot of wolves because its "wolf season" or something that of sorts. These creatures are very misunderstood and yeah they are big and can kill a human but it won't unless its hunrgy or threated. A long time ago, there was a wolf hunt in europe killing a lot of wolves. They are beautiful creatures, strong, fast, loyal to their pack, and very protective of their pack.

I'm 41. Had my licence before I turned 19. Have not driven once since. I realised early on that I'm extremely sh@@ at it. I can do lots of things but driving is not one of them. It's not about lack of practice. It's about lack of abilities needed for this. I know myself. I know it would be dangerous to me and others for me to drive, so I do the responsible thing and I don't. And I get so much sh@@ for it. Like there's no way I can know myself better than this stranger who met me 5 minutes ago and can absolutely tell that I just need practice because that's how it worked for them.

Right? I got my license at 23 but never had a car until 30 so i couldnt practise. I used to get so anxious that sometimes i needed to stop, park and change seats with my partner because it was too much. Anything faster than 30km/h used to give me panic attacks. Then it was 40, then 50. I still dont dare to go to the highway but last week i drove at 90 for a while without paniking (still scared). Many people mock me for being irrationally afriad of the highway

I am 26, and I still don't drive. Because unless like everyone try to tell you, we don't all need to have a car. I can walk to places where I need to be, and if it is too far, I can take a bus or a train, then walk again. Walking may be time consumming, but will keep you healthy. Bonus part is that you don't have to pay for the fuel (especially in the current situation).

I'm terrified to drive. One of my worst fears is to accidentally not see someone, like a fast little child... I've practiced driving a lot, and people told me it would be easier but I still have this fear. I also had issues with alcohol (even though I'm sober now) and feel like a driver's license don't fit with that regardless. I'm actually fine with riding my bike everywhere but many jobs require a driving license (even though it's not really about driving) so that's why I wanted to get one but after several attempts I think I've given up now (I'm 34 and started at 21).

Same as a Canadian. Even if you live in a city with plenty of public transportation, amenities in walking distance and not bumming rides off of people. Some people I know who have taken the bus before get it. But those who live out of town or choose to be ignorant still accuse me of relying on other people to drive me around, insist on driving me to functions when I tell them I can take a bus and b***h about me not learning to drive. It's to the point I have family who refuses to invite me to places now and will not accept my invites to have them over for dinner. I'm beginning to think they do not accept people who take the bus, or find it unfair I'm not paying for gas like they are.

I am 24 and have very legitimate reasons why I can't drive. I already have a very bad sense of direction, I'm extremely clumsy and disoriented and it gets much worse when I am tired or stressed. For example my depth perception is HORRIBLE when I'm tired (I often reach for things and realize I'm reaching beside it or too far away). Not only that I am terrible at eye-balling things and guessing distance etc. ON TOP OF THAT I have been diagnosed with multiple anxiety based disorders including panic disorder. I have a ton of experience driving because my parents forced me to learn and I did drivers ed and my instructor told me herself I am too much of a dangerous driver

Cont. I have come to accept the fact I will never be able to drive and it's a sensitive thing for me bc I have to always rely on rides from others or take the bus (which is an anxiety trigger for me but I am constantly working through it to make it less of a trigger) but I am always getting the most judgemental reactions from people when I tell them I don't drive. I usually get "you just need to practice" or "you can't live your life without driving" or "what happens when you have kids and they need to get to doctors appointments" and I just feel so much guilt and it's really not cool. Seriously leave people alone! You don't know what they might be going through!

Got my license just over a year ago at the age of 37. Because I finally had to learn to drive because we moved out on the country. Before that I lived in big cities where I could get by with public transportations, biking and walking. My driving teacher told me that when I learn to love to drive I will be perfect at it. I still don't like to drive even though I do it on a daily basis. I do drive a lot better though. But darn the anxiety I have had while learning to drive. The first time on the highway I cried. I didn't like driving so fast. Now I am OK with driving on the highway but I don't really like it. It is true what they say: you don't learn to actually drive until after you get your license.

This resonates so hard with me— I’m 17 and I have like 16 out of 50 needed hours to get my license, and I’ve had my learners permit for like two years. I feel like freaking out whenever I have to drive anywhere due to anxiety, and literally everybody acts like there’s something wrong with me because I hate it so much. I hope I can overcome it tho :(

My friend was an alcoholic who started drinking young. The one smart decision he made was to not get a license because he didn't trust himself since he always makes poor decisions. He is nearly 40 and just starting to learn since he finally has it under control

Here in Germany it would be not driving manual. I have learned on a automatic car, it is even noted in my license that I can only drive automatic, I would never drive manual. The number of times people stared at me like I am an alien when I told them that, unbelievable. The only problems I have with only driving automatic is a) Not being able to drive most European classic cars (not that I could ever afford a classic car) and b) a drastically reduced pool on the used car market. Seriously, only like 15% of all available are automatic...

I have my license, and use it during the worse weather (winter and heavy precipitation) or if I can't walk in a reasonable amount of time somewhere, but most days I walk to work. People will ask me if my car is broken constantly. As if it's weird to save gas and get some fresh air.

So much easier to be car-free in Europe where many places were built before cars and the public transport is widely available and not looked down upon. I'm mid-forties and have never driven. I live very close to the city centre of a very old city so my own two feet and occasionally a bicycle are all I need. When I visited the US I tried to walk from my hotel to the beach a few blocks away (L.A.) and the police came over to ask me if I was OK. Everything is based around cars.

And there’s also decent country music. The root of modern pop is country rock. Music snobs need to take a seat on this one.

Let people enjoy things. Music is art, and art is very personal. If you don’t like it, bring headphones. The only time it annoys me is if there’s gospel music in public places. Simply because gospel is very emotional and kind of moody. Like I just wanna sit here and eat my enchiladas and complain to my spouse about work that day. I’m not really in the mood to drop down on my knees in a fervent worship session at Jose Taco.

Unemployed people. A lot of people genuinely are looking for work and did not want to lose their last job/it was beyond their control (like a layoff) but they get so much hate and called lazy by most people. I know too many unemployed people that are actually really trying hard. They definitely aren’t lazy. (Not saying lazy unemployed people don’t exist, but to be fair, so do lazy employed people too lol)

Worked in community services for a few years on a mandatory program for anyone on welfare to get them back to work. There were only three types of people 1. Want to work, 2. Absolutely unemployable at that moment in time, and 3. Incredibly lazy. There was hardly anyone in the lazy category. Some of the people experiencing homelessness or people addicted to drugs or alcohol wanted so so badly to get jobs but had too many personal challenges to be reliable enough to make it to work. Broke my heart.

Nuclear energy. Of the 3 big nuclear accidents (Chernobyl, Fukushima, Three Mile Island), two of those designs are no longer in use at any plant, and none of the designs have been used to build any new plants in decades. The entire industry has been made far safer as a result of learning from past mistakes and it is now the greenest of energies. But many people are still adamantly anti-nuclear.

Anything that’s popular/mainstream is such because it’s just so amazing and original that everyone just loves it, or because it’s engineered to be a safe rehashed, proven product to maximize the chance of having a broad appeal. The former is rare and timeless. The latter is dime a dozen and you won’t even remember it two years from now. I just wait until everyone I know can’t stop talking about it, then I check it out.

I wish more people would experience life under the ocean to see how beautiful it is and maybe experience first hand all the harm that is happening down there. Every dive my partner and I collect bag loads of rubbish, it's getting quite heartbreaking.

Depends on what you’re cooking at home too. A fast food meal can be the nutritional equivalent of a lot of typical American home-cooked meals- particularly processed or “quick meals”. Neither is good for you, but nutritionally it doesn’t make a difference.

Even if you're not scared of them, if you touch or see a snake you'll probably get a shiver up your spine or get goosebumps since they were a big problem for our race WAY back when. Hating snakes though? most of them leave you alone and mind their business as long as you mind yours.

Without question it has been the best car we've ever owned, and the best vehicular investment, too. Not the most fun, admittedly, but I never expected a Prius to be fun.
