The future turned out a whole lot differently than people expected. For example, Simon Newcomb, a Canadian-American astronomer and mathematician, said: "Flight by machines heavier than air is unpractical and insignificant, if not utterly impossible." 18 months later, the Wright Brothers flew a Kittyhawk. To prove that you can't reallyknow what's going to happen, Bored Panda has compiled a list of things that seemed OK at the time, but have become ridiculously absurd. Like, diet candy AYDS. Or acceptance speeches thanking Harvey Weinstein. Looking at the past in good on a personal level, too. "Self-Reflective Awareness (SRA) is a 'meta-cognitive' ability, meaning that it involves thinking about and reflecting on one’s own mental processes," Gregg Henriques, Ph.D., wrote. "Someone with good SRA is able to generate a narrative of self that is complex, clear, and multifaceted and is able to communicate that narrative in a way that allows others a much better understanding of where one is coming from."
There are a number of different facets to SRA, including knowingnow your family story and developmental history, understanding your needs, motivations, and emotions, understanding your defenses and how you handle criticism, understanding your strengths, and weakneses, understanding your beliefs/values and worldview, knowing your pupose in life and how you make meaning, knowing how others see you, knowing the 'cultural bubble' that you live in. Exploring these areas can dramatically increase the results of one's self-reflection.
This may all sound very complex, but, at its simplest, reflection is about careful thought. It gives the brain an opportunity to pause, untangle and sort through observations and experiences, consider multiple possible interpretations, and create meaning. And every little bit counts. Research by Giada Di Stefano, Francesca Gino, Gary Pisano, and Bradley Staats in call centers showed that employees who spent 15 minutes at the end of the day reflecting about what they learned performed 23% better after 10 days than those who didn't.
"Going through old slides and found this eerily prophetic pic of my brother, captured late summer 2000"
The episode of Seinfeld where Elaine is dating a guy who shares a name with a murderer. He keeps getting mistaken for him so she gets him to change his name. She picks up a sports magazine and is trying to find a name for him in there, and comes up with "OJ" (Simpson, she was referring to). The episode was from 93, the murders happened 94.
There was an interview with Kevin spacey working with kids and he said he was always looking for the shy kid in the corner.
The Edmonton Swastikas, a Canadian girls' hockey team. c. 1916
The shape symbolizes eternal cycling, a theme found in samsara doctrine of Buddhism , it sits on a flat edge instead of the Swastika that sits on the tip

The food pyramid
there's a lot of hostility towards carbs, and gluten at the moment.
Load More Replies...Well it depends on what you do. When this was popular, people worked more with their body, so they needed energy. Nowadays most people sit in front of a PC all day and get fat if they eat like this.
Is this not still in use? The switch from the four food groups to the food pyramid was sometime in the 90s as I recall, so lifestyles weren't that different and people weren't that healthier.
Load More Replies...Or... you know... the growing amount of obese population. That's what happens when you base a diet in simple carbs. You get hungry pretty fast and overeat. Overeating leads to weight gain
Load More Replies...And following these guidelines has caused morbid obesity, everything is upside down, we're in the upside down.
I have a friend in her 40s who still has a hard time understanding our improved medical guidelines for eating. In the 1960s and 1970s, the US government really pushed the empty carbs of refined wheat products. I only eat whole-grain products, and target 45 g or less of total carbs per meal. My friend sees my meat and veggies and fruit and shrieks "you need bread!"
Bottom one. Not gluten, but carbs with no nutrition.. this is because in the oast, bread and similar just filled your belly. Food has changed. We are not starving now. So the pyramid is sort ofok, but google todays nutrition eeds. Not thesame st all
Simple carbs are bad. They convert quickly to sugar, and if your body doesn't need that much sugar/energy at the moment, will be stored as fat. Complex carbs, like vegetables & whole wheat, are slower to convert & will release sugar at a slower pace.
Yep this is super important for women especially which is why we just get cast off and downvoted for talking about it.
Load More Replies...Carbohydrates are basically sugar and if not burned off by the body can contribute to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
I obviously can't read a pyramid. LOL It's upside down. Still trying to break the bread cravings. *sigh*
There are so many food myths around at the moment especially around carbs and gluten. Unless you have an intolerance you need them and they are essential. Fats too are good for you as long as they are "healthy fats" like milk, cheese, avocado, oily fish just stay about from trans fats in pies and processed meats and defo sugar -that is the worst thing.
They are not *essential* at all. There's no standard diet that fits everyone
Load More Replies...You don’t need that many servings of carbs and you don’t need any meat or dairy. There’s no one way we have to do it to be healthy. You can eat almost entirely vegetables and be healthy. You could eat zero breads and twice as much lean meat and be healthy. The food pyramid is just wrong across the board.
Well, if you swap calories for servings that is still fairly valid. And it sure as hell will be in the future, when most of our planet is a barren wasteland.
What did the social media generation read and who belongs to that generation?
Load More Replies...The whole "cousins" thing they pulled in the english dub of Sailor Moon back in the day with Haruka and Michiru (named "Amara" and "Michelle" in the dub), who were originally written as a lesbian couple.
I know that lesbian couples in a kid's show would have been a big deal at the time that it came out, but looking back now, they really did a piss-poor job at trying to make their relationship not seem romantic while also claiming they were related
To be fair in the book the character is pure evil and he gave that interview before they turned the character into the comedy pirate for the TV show. He probably assumed he’d get to play the book version. Totally not his fault.
Older tv shows that joke about psychologists and don’t take them seriously. I’m looking at you Gilmore Girls
I read somewhere that if you figure in inflation, Avatar is still higher grossing than Endgame; and also if you look at the number of ticket sales. But they desperately did everything they could to dethrone Avatar (launching campaigns, using social media, bringin Endgame fans to buy more then one ticket and to beg their friend to also buy tickets, ...). Honestly, who cares. Both are Disney movies anyway
I'm guessing most of these posts pertain to situations in the US. I couldn't understand all of them, I wish there was some explanation to the ones without any text explaining why they didn't age well.
True. It is difficult sometimes. I am English, but living in Turkey 10 years. I probably didn't understand half of them. But, because i have had alittle wine tonight, i probably commented too much. So what? Understand or not, just go with the flow. Good luck.
