It just takes a few quick scrolls through the week’s news to see how an entire life can be ruined in the blink of an eye. Sometimes it’s because of a bad decision. Other times, someone was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We read about people being maimed in freak accidents, dozens dying in unexpected attacks, or once-respected figures being suddenly locked up for crimes they were caught committing.

Yet, as much as we read about these tragedies and wasted lives, we often don’t think it’ll happen to us. And we hope nothing bad will ever happen to those we know. Someone was pondering this the other day, and decided to ask “What did someone you know do that ruined their entire life?” Hundreds of people came to the comments to share their stories, and Bored Panda has collected the most hard-hitting ones. Keep scrolling for some tragic and sobering reminders of just how precious life is, and how quickly things can change. We also had a very brief chat with the person who posed the original question.

A sad child embracing a parent, conveying an emotional moment and life's impactful actions. I know a lot of people who ruined their lives by having children. They ruined their children's lives also.

I am in favor of children but so many children have hellish childhoods with parents who should never have had children.

Exactly. (Even though some people insist every woman needs to have kids or else she’s “useless.”)

So many people see kids as just "what you're meant to do". I have too many physical and mental health issues right now (mid 30s) to pass onto a kid. I'd love to foster one day but kids aren't for me.

I wish people would give a lot of thought before having children. They didn't ask to be born.

Friend of mine has bad borderline personality disorder, anxiety and depression. Has been trying for kids ever since she was 20. Succeeded a few years later after lots of miscarriages. She has 2 (4 and 5) now and boy, they are traumatized by her behavior. The older one is in therapy because of behavioral issues. The only good thing is her uterus had to be removed or who knows how many more children she'll f**k up. But thinks she's a Saint regarding her offspring

I had a few reasons not to have children. One being, I have struggled with mental illness for the better part of my life. I was afraid there was a possibility of passing it on to them, so I chose not to have any.

I'm 40 emotionally stable and doing fine financially. I've never had kids because I simple don't want them. I love other people's but having them all the time sounds like hell to me. Best decision I've ever made.

My uncle smoked weed, triggered schizophrenia and at one point he poured petrol on himself and lit it on fire. He lost half his fingers and his wife and kids. He lived on and off in supported living but never managed to work again, spent most of his days smoking and drinking coke. Ended up with emphysema and oesophageal issues because the amount of coke he drank ate away at it.

More people need to know there is a strong link between heavy cannabis use and psychosis. It's involved in 50% of all psychotic cases, including schizophrenia. Half. There are other factors of course, and not everyone who uses will have a psychotic break, but people need to know it's a risk: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3927252/

I hate him because he was abusive, but I also feel bad for him. His death has been slow painful and riddled with confusion. I tried to get him sober but eventually gave up.

It takes a strong brave person to go into rehab and recovery. I've never been there but from what I understand it can be tough road from people I've scheduled appts for. You stay strong and keep those demons away from you. You can do this keep on fighting and seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist and taking meds if they have been prescribed.

A car crashed into a tree, with a distressed person sitting nearby, illustrating a life-altering action consequence. A friend I made in my neighborhood when we were really young had a really troubled home life. He started drinking young and when he was 18 he was driving his friends back from a party, drunk, crashed the car and k*lled all 5 of his passengers, 2 of whom were his childhood best friends and 1 his girlfriend. He survived and got life in prison. He k*lled himself in his cell about 8 years later.

It's often the drunk driver who ends up surviving. Except I did know an idiot who decided to drive a company tow truck to a party. (He was allowed to have the truck at his home. Don't think he was allowed to drive it outside work hours.) Him and his girlfriend left, he was drunk. Not sure about her, but she was unqualified to drive a tow truck. They were speeding down a highway, when she came to an intersection I guess she tried to use the breaks but didn't know she couldn't stop as fast as a regular car can, she lost control and the truck flipped a bunch of times. She wasn't wearing a seat belt, got thrown out the cab, died on impact. He was in the cab, still, the truck caught on fire and exploded.

Every rural town has their own version of Deadman's Curve, and my town had one. Group of drunken high schoolers, our classmates/friends, school athletes and their girlfriends, didn't make the curve one night. Four died and two were disabled for life. The route to the wake included this curve, that took the lives of several more of our classmates on route to the wake. A pall fell over the town for many years.

I am terribly ashamed to admit I often drove when I ABSOLUTELY shouldn’t have when I was young. We don’t really have public transportation where I live and this was before uber and Lyft etc., we also don’t have cabs. That’s no excuse though. I never had an accident but that was pure luck. I made sure to drill into my daughter to never make my mistakes. I am happy to say she’s a responsible drinker. I really wish I hadn’t been so ignorant when I was young.

It's not only the young that act so irresponsibly. My father was up on DUI 3 times and only just got away with not being put in jail the last time. He lost his licence and I don't think he ever drank and drove after that. I remember a few times when I went with him to his social golf tournaments, and he got absolutely wasted. He still drove and I can remember being petrified when he used to veer over the other side of the street. Luckily it was in a rural area and no cars came at us. But it could have been a lot worse. I hate drunk drivers.

We used to wrestle the car keys out of our drunken friends' hands. Yes, we were young and stupid, but not *that* stupid. One managed to drive anyway, and as if by fate, crashed his car and his best friends femur, fortunately not more than that. Unfortunately, too often drunk drivers get the rapists' excuse of "didn't know what they were doing". That would only work if it's the first time they're drunk, but of course it's not.

Silhouetted person sitting on a bed in a dimly lit room, contemplating an action that changed their life. My best friend had to choose between saving his wife or unborn child, during a medical emergency. He chose his wife.

Both survived thankfully, but the decision f****d him up so badly he turned to alcohol. Lost his job, wife (although she still loved him, but understandably she couldn't be with him) and in August last year he died.

Such a sad ending for something that couldn't be helped.

And never do them alone; always together with a buddy who can remind you that you're about to do something stupid. Believe me, I've partied for years, and even after warnings were given, they'd tend to do it anyway. My best friend blowing himself up last 4th of July for example, or anther friend who had to go underneath his truck with a screwdriver to start it, ended up jumping the transmission into five and ran himself over. The meth...

Police car with flashing lights at night, relating to life-changing actions. Knew a guy who I saw get into a bar fight and when the other guy was down on the floor, he kicked him square in the temple with his steel toed cowboy boot and k*llled him. We jumped on him and held him until the cops came. Currently doing life in the state pen.

Bar fights often become deadly. When you're drunk, inhibitions and rules go out the window.

In Australia we have a name for when you hit someone with one punch and kill them- a King hit, because it was happening so often outside the pubs and nightclubs on King St in Sydney. Actually, we have another name for it now, the Coward Punch.

Any fight can become deadly with the wrong strike. My father is currently serving life for rape, murder, and kidnapping, ask because he wanted to go up with a biker chick he knew, while loaded in X and mushrooms. She led him to the parking lot, where her boyfriend claimed to have evidence to put him away for life. He claims he blacked it, the next thing he knew, he was in the woods, they were dead, and he was covered head to toe in blood. My own mother didn't tell me who he was until I was 27, and now that I've met him I know where my own rage comes from, and I've done EVERYTHING possible to make sure he NEVER gets out.

There's a really interesting play in London at the moment called "Punch". It's based on the life of a man called Jacob Dunne, who killed James Hodgekinson with one punch. With the help of James' parents he has turned his life around. He now talks to teenagers about how to avoid the mistakes he made.

I think there's a difference between killing someone with one punch, where your intent is unlikely to be to do serious damage, and kicking someone in the head with a steel capped boot like in this story. Obviously, you shouldn't get into fights if you can avoid them because you can kill someone with one punch, but kicking someone in the head with steel capped boots is clearly intending to kill or seriously injure. That's someone who needs to be removed from society for a very long time for everyone else's sake.

Because trying to break it up is a good way to get beat up in a drunken fight. Not worth the effort unless it's an attempt to save a life.

I deleted all social media in 2022, and never looked back (idk if boredpanda counts tho). I’ve been so much happier and not as stressed out. I worried I’d feel a sense of being out of the loop, but the absolute rot that is on social media nowadays reminds me that I’m not missing anything at all. Whenever I feel the urge to download one again, I watch the social dilemma on Netflix 🤣

Seconded. BoredPanda is my social media (sort of). I still have accounts on them, so I can get in touch with friends/relatives I haven't seen in a few years if needed. I'm not even slightly tethered to them like so many people. I hate what they have become. Social media, not my friends.

Like any addiction, social media is safe in small doses. I've been on social media for about 20yrs, but I'm very particular. I joined Twitter back in 2006 when it launched, but now that it's X, I'm rarely on the site. Reddit is another site where you have to carefully choose subreddits to save your sanity. Then, of course, there's BP. It's not social media, it's obsessive behavior that's the problem, which is true with all addictions.

While the person behind the question was kind enough to reply to our request for an interview, they weren't too keen on saying a lot. And of course, we didn't want to push them or pry any further.

What we did manage to find out was that the person had decided to pose the question because they were curious to know whether anyone had "lost everything" due to gambling or using illegal substances. "Some of the answers aren't shocking," they said, citing the fact that illicit substances and gambling "ruin lives."

When we asked whether they were willing to answer any of the other questions we'd put forward, they replied, "Not really, unfortunately."

Man lying in a hospital bed, illustrating life-changing consequences from a single action. My husband was out one night with his work colleagues. They were at a bar, having fun and stayed out late. His boss used the valet to park his brand new really expensive BMW. For whatever reason or another, the valet and my husband‘s boss got into an altercation. My husband‘s boss is a 6’7 Kenyon who for a long period of his life was a professional rugby player for Kenya. The valet driver was maybe 5’5 and just an average person. My husband‘s boss told the valet driver to meet him outside so that they can finish their altercation in a street fight, he turned to walk towards the door of the restaurant, and the valet driver pulled brass knuckles out of his pocket and bashed his skull in. He was in a coma for months. He’s now paraplegic cannot speak. Cannot feed himself. And lives in an assisted living facility.

While the boss did escalate the situation by threatening to fight the valet in the street, it’s still no excuse for the valet to bash someone’s f*****g head in. He should have called the authorities and reported the boss, not ruin two lives. Both were in the wrong, but one took his chance to do the right thing and made the worst decision instead

So the Boss knowingly tried to use his height, weight, and status as an intimidation factor. Basically verbally threatens and challenges someone with potential physical violence. Someone, who was most definitely way under his weight class. At which point, unfortunately for the Boss and his hubris, the rule of FAFO kicked in. 1. Never assume that you are the toughest in the room. 2. Never take your eyes away from/off of any potential opponents. 3. Never assume that the opponents are not willing to trade their life, for yours.

Well that didn't end up like I expected it to. Kind of sounds like the boss was a bully. You never know who you're messing with, the boss was over a foot taller than the valet. When my kids were in highschool I had them in Taekwondo. There was a petite girl that went to the same dojo as their instructor. The girl was a a lake with a friend and her family. Any went to the bathroom and a creep followed her, she screamed and people came running. Before anybody got there she had kicked his a*s and put him in the hospital with some broken bones. It turns out he was a convicted sex offender. After calling her parents she he called Mike the instructor bawling terrified that she was in trouble and was told no, you did what you were trained to do and defended yourself. I saw her a couple of weeks later and told her I was proud of her.

Power lines against a clear blue sky, representing a life-changing action. Guy I know got drunk with his brother one night and they were screwing around and he climbed the ladder on one of those electrical transformer towers , got too close to the cables and the arc fried him. He fell about 60 feet (was already dead though) and his brother watched the whole thing happen. He tried to perform CPR or whatever but it was no use, apparently his glasses and clothes melted to his skin too. From what I understand his brother struggled with alcoholism before that happened and I can only imagine its worse now.

He had a midlife crisis, divorced my mom out of nowhere, started dating someone my age, they broke up and he became a closet alcoholic and it gave him cirrhosis and pancreatic cancer that he never told anyone about and never got treated- he died on Father’s Day.
Before all of that he was the VP at a successful tech company and was the brightest, funniest, most talented person I ever knew.

A distant relative was brilliant, but arrogant as all get out. Back then, schools were really strict about drügs, esp. the private Catholic school he was attending for pre-med. He got caught with cannabis, was expelled with an academic record that barred him from entering any pre-med/medical school. He became a small town cop and viciously went after anyone he suspected of having drügs, which were plentiful back in the 70's.

Bearded man in glasses and a plaid shirt on stage, holding a microphone. Woman I know seemingly happily married with kids. Her husband was a really stand up guy. She met a man in a bar ( her husband was there with her) and she fell completely head over heels for this other guy just like that. Within minutes her marriage was over. Long story short the other guy turned out to be a real bag of do do. He was a very charming man and everyone liked him but he was secretly a drunk, a thief and a mega manipulator. Over time she lost everything including her health.

It wasn't Botox most likely but a facial filler. Botox paralyzes but wears off after a few months. Fillers can block arteries and make tissue go necrotic, or go blind. They can also cause lumps, infections and other nasty things

Every procedure comes with risks. Make sure you can live with the consequences before you make your decision. My husband had a blocked carotid artery. We knew the risks if something went wrong, but without the surgery, he would have died.

Reminds me of my grandma. She had a tumor near her ear and needed an MRI. Because of claustrophobia she was too scared to get one so they just went ahead and operated to remove the tumor. Ended up nicking a nerve causing the left side of her face to be paralyzed. Had she had the MRI they would have found the tumor was benign and not performed surgery.

I had three neck surgeries that I later learned were experimental and only made it worse. The next surgeon I saw told me it would take three surgeries to correct it. The risk of becoming fully paralyzed has terrified me so now I just live with daily pain.

Botox is a highly diluted form of the most deadly poison known to man. A teaspoon amount of it would be enough to kill the entire population of UK. Do not understand why you would inject it into your face.

Person using a phone while driving, illustrating a risky action. Texting and driving. She died. There was a whole creepy thing around town cause the way they know she was texting was an intact phone found in the wreckage with a message half typed out in the middle of a sentence saying she was X minutes away and something she wanted to do with them when she got there. Creepy s**t.

My sister will text and drive. She will also talk (while holding the phone) and drive. She expects everyone else to do the same - as in, if I don't respond to her texts/don't take her calls when I'm driving, she gets infuriated and will start texting me "hello???" etc. I will not touch my phone while I'm driving. Honestly, even talking on a hands-free phonecall takes enough of your attention (IMO) that you are distracted from driving. My sister hasn't had anything bad happen yet, but I worry. She's older than I am (she is 49) and will not listen to my pleas about not texting while driving, no matter how I beg or phrase it :(

Man outdoors in a white shirt, illustrating someone whose life changed with one action. Guy had it made with corporate sugar mama. He took care of the kids, and could travel the world and do mostly what he wanted. Cheated with multiple women, and ended up getting one pregnant. Lost his wife, friends, kids hated him. Last I heard he was living in a basement, working odd jobs.

A pensive man in low light reflecting on life-changing action. Knew a lad who had the maintenance contract for multiple franchises of a large, well known take away/fast food chain.

He made a small fortune doing little more than just making phone calls. Threw it all away by having an affair with on me of the franchisee's wives, his wife found out, left him, took their son, then he stole 40k from the wife of the franchisee, and got banged up in prison. F*****g idiot.

Cute cat sitting on a sofa looking surprised, with a pillow and plants in the background. Please read through the whole thing before judging.

While I was recovering from a surgery, I stayed at a relative's house and a stray cat used to come there everyday. One day it stopped. I became mental and searched for it but could never find it.

So I adopted a kitten once I recovered and returned home.

I have a personality disorder and was raised with no communication with animals and have barely seen anyone having a pet. So after I adopted a kitten, I would beat myself up if I couldn't rescue any kittens I would see anywhere. So I started rescuing. I'm not equipped to do it. Instead of trying to manage stuff, I took loans to feed them.

The cats didn't even stay and despite my best attempts at keeping them indoors and spending money spaying and neutering them, a lot of them ran away. So I'm in deep debt and without a steady job. I made the mistake of relying on the loans.

Edit: I don't regret rescuing any of those kittens. I don't live in the kind of place where there are shelters and people are aware of species appropriate diet and stuff. So even the kind hearted people don't feed them properly or care that much. I only regret relying on the loans without caring about the long term issues it could cause.

You do cats no favors when you try to keep them without the financial means to really take care of them. Hoarding is also a problem that applies to such a situation when you keep getting more and more pets although you cannot take care of them. It is an addiction. Get some counseling care and when you can build a life that is not hanging on the financial edge all the time, adopt ONE animal to care for. Help find homes for other rescues. That is the best thing you can do for them.

How To Ruin Your Entire Life: 35 Scary And Sobering Stories Shared By People Online A guy who was on the track to the perfect life. He was a prefect when I was in like 7th grade and we were on our annual music ensemble rehearsal getaway. The upper choir which he was part of had their own little house which had a glass ceiling.

On the third night my room in the main house was woken up because of the commotion going on outside. Abulances, teachers and other students all in PJs and confused.

Turns out the prefect got drunk with a few friends, then climbed onto the glass ceiling and crashed through it.

He had permanent nerve damage, got sued and had this dream job refused (working for the police).

So, don't drink and climb around on glass ceilings 🙃.

This happened to someone I was in rehab with during one of my stints. He was drunk and was climbing on a railing next to a lower glass ceiling. He fell, crashed through the ceiling, and continued falling until he hit the ground. Half of one of his ears got sliced off, nerve damage, and a broken leg.

How To Ruin Your Entire Life: 35 Scary And Sobering Stories Shared By People Online Have kids with the wrong man. Oh, and do no research about the chances of having more autistic children after the first. Or research on autism. All of my aunt’s kids have high levels of autism.

and for some reason, she fell pregnant recently and wanted to keep it (she is not in a comfortable position). The universe said no; she miscarried.

Love her, but watching her willingly make choices that ruin her life is just... exhausting. can't help but pity her kids who are definitely not receiving enough care for their autism (like therapies, established routines, etc.).

My cousin's first child was born with a severe form of Cystic Fibrosis. Found out he and his wife both carried a rare gene and that any other kids would have a 75% chance of also having it. So, of course, they had another baby. He also had that severe form of CF. They then had a 3rd child, who thankfully is healthy. But WHY would you continue to have children who could be born with a fatal illness. I don't get it.

I've sometimes watched documentaries on families/couples who have done the same thing - they have one child with a terrible birth defect/congenital issue that turns out to be genetic/hereditary. After the child is diagnosed and the parents KNOW it's genetic, they proceed to keep on having children, and sometimes all of them will have the same condition. I cannot fathom the selfishness of the parents. It's even WORSE when it's one of the really severe congenital/genetic diseases that mean the child will literally require 24/7 care for the rest of its life (things like severe microcephaly, epidermolysis bullosa, harlequin-type ichthyosis, etc.) CF is awful enough - I know people can live much longer lives with CF nowadays, but they require multiple DAILY treatments/medications/etc. and a bad cold/respiratory virus could still kill them easily. There's an excellent book by Jay Gironimi, who is ~40 and lives with CF. He describes how horrific it is for him to just live through each day.

You are clearly a high-functioning autistic person (as am I) since you are able to communicate verbally. You may not realize this, but there are different and varying severity levels to autism. Those who are severely autistic (generally referred to as "level 3" in medical diagnosis/terminology) will require caregivers for their entire lives, as they cannot function in society normally nor take care of themselves to any degree. They generally have large developmental delays and some are unable to communicate verbally OR nonverbally. It's wonderful that you are an autistic person who is able to function in society to some degree. But perhaps you should try to understand that not all autistic people are as fortunate, and some will require lifetime care. It is not "ableist" or "classist" to say this, as it is actual, factual reality.

I feel like my friend kind of did this. I love her and her kids (I never actually met them as I moved to Canada before they were born) but she is having a hard time. She started seeing this guy after I left, she always had bad luck with men but he seemed nice even to me. After a few months of dating they suddenly got married,I had a hunch she got pregnant but initially she denied it although later on she confessed. Their marriage wasn't great after the first child was born so I have no clue why they had another one. I think due to all the stress and anxiety he put her through,it messed up this pregnancy and she was told the child would have a lot of health issues . Decided to have the baby, husband left like 6 years ago and since then it's been a battle. Currently her child is in the hospital for the past month, had 3 surgeries and has COVID. I feel so sad for her and kids because it's and awful situation and I can't even help her.

And why it's related to this post, the child is non verbal, can't walk and can't eat normal food or he will get sick. I don't recall if she was told he would be autistic but there were a lot of other health issues that she was aware of early in the pregnancy and it's even sadder that she's left alone to handle all of it.

Police car lights flashing, symbolizing a life-altering action. My youngest brother got clean from m*th after his girlfriend had their son. They got married. She, on the other hand, couldn't kick the habit and eventually pulled him back in. One night, apparently his m*th was laced with something and he went off about her second baby being a "demon baby". It got heated and he grabbed a decorative sword to shoo her away and it scratched her stomach (literally a scratch). Police arrived and arrested him. She did not want to press charges but the judge gave him 5 years in prison. He was given no leniency and did the full time. That second baby... Let's just say, she looked nothing like him, including skin color.

ALWAYS be clean from math! When your math is laced with something --- well, nothing adds up. You just feel divided, with no solution. The arc of you life has no probability. You can try to factor in the circumference of the mean tangents of your life. But all that remains is an irrational constant.

This person is giving their brother a lot of grace he probably doesn’t deserve. She was scratched with a sword? She was probably in absolute fear for her life and how is that even close to ok? She pulled him back in? It was still his choice but you are really giving him the benefit of the doubt which he probably didn’t deserve. If he got himself clean he would’ve known to stop associating with people who still did it. Otherwise he might not have been as clean as you think. Also, does she have custody of these kids? Then her problem might not be as bad as your brother let on, especially considering the fact they weren’t taken at birth when their blood is usually tested for d***s.

A man under green and red lighting, symbolizing a life-changing decision in a dramatic setting. It isn't always a big dramatic event. I've seen a lot of people have terrible lives because they are in denial, arrogant, or stubborn. Unwillingness to even think change is possible makes people not evolve and live gets more complex with time, usually, so they can't adapt and become more and more unhappy. And it can be a totally solvable problem! But if you refuse to engage with it or put full effort into fixing yourself? It will be a problem forever.

As a person suffering from depression and trying to recover from self harm that’s getting worse- don’t do it, even if you’re curious. One day, you’re staring at the knife longingly, and before you know it, you have too many lines in your skin. Anything else healthy- read, bike, watch a show, call a friend. It will destroy you, and it quickly becomes habit.

Sometimes the complaint IS the cry for help. People w depression find it hard to seek help for many reasons. Feeling unworthy of recieving help and financial strife being two of the main ones. If you've not had it you cannot judge. And believe me, many DO "rot away in their room". I pity the person who has tried to confide in you.
