“Felt Like An Idiot”: 35 Things People Did Wrong For Years Until They Learned The Right Way
Nobody is born wise, so we shouldn't beat ourselves up too much whenever we're reminded of our shortcomings. However, sometimes your ignorance takes center stage and it becomes quite hard to ignore it.
Recently, Reddit user Slart_n made a post on the platform, asking others what everyday things they did wrong for years until they finally realized, and people immediately started sending in their answers.
Eventually, the thread turned into somewhat of a life hack archive and we at Bored Panda thought there's at least one useful lesson for everyone, so continue scrolling and happy learning!

Not making a joke when someone gives you a compliment. I have learned to say “thank you. That’s nice to hear”. Game changer for me.
I instantly go self-deprecating after a compliment. Someone at the dog park recently told me they liked my shirt. I replied “Thanks, I know I’m kind of weird, I dress like a 13-year-old boy from 1990!” I wish I could just say “Thank you!” and leave out the self-insults.
If you wouldn't say it to someone else, don't say it to yourself.
Load More Replies...I like to say “thank you, you’re so kind”… Someone said it me after I gave a compliment; made my day. Game changer for both parties.
Hmmm...this may work better for me than just saying "How much are you looking to borrow?"
I grew up with every compliment paired with a deeper criticism. I still can't seem to accept them. Just feel awkward and undeserving. But, it's working for you. I will try. And thank you.
I usually just give a kinda half smile/half unsure or just laugh. Idk why but I do.
Us guys are not allowed to compliment women anymore. We get in big trouble.
It all depends on the circumstances, it's very situational. Also for all genders involved, compliment a person on something they chose themselves instead of a trait they were born with. "Hey, that's a cool jean jacket." or "Your makeup looks great today." vs "You have a great smile."

If you're trying to hang a picture by catching the crosswire on a nail in the wall, slide a fork down over the nail so the prongs are behind the nail head and the fork is angled away from the wall. Slide the wire down behind the fork, and it will be guided right onto the nail. Then just pull up the fork. Saves a dozen attempts to "catch" the nail on the wire.
Thank you, thank you, A million times thank you from this short frustrated person!
I usually put my hands over the top back of the painting and push the wire backwards with my fingertips (outwards away from the board of the painting). I then lower onto the nail and release.
Than you have to eat steak with a spoon cuz all your forks are busy.
Did you miss the part where you should "just pull up the fork"?
Load More Replies...Or simply hook the wire at the edge of the painting then slide it to the middle.
Omg I can't believe how simple this solution is and I've never thought of it. I am eternally grateful for this. I am also short and have had endless frustrations over this.
Wires? The pictures in my house have just small metal eye to put on the hook.
Opening a beverage can.
I keep my fingernails very short and sometimes it would be a bit finicky to open the tab on a can.
I was damn near 40 years old when my buddy showed me you’re supposed to push down on the hinge portion of the tab with your thumb to raise the other edge of the tab so you can get your finger under it. I felt like an idiot.
Never again shall I be defeated by a lowly beer can! *psshht* *chug* *crushes defeated can on forehead* Ow.
I have never heard of this. I keep my fingernails short. I have never had a problem opening a beverage can with a tab. Also, you can just swivel the tab if it's an especially tricky one. You also don't have to use your fingernail, use the fleshy part of your finger (like in the picture).
I usually have enough fingernails to open a can easily but last time I had to use a spoon. I'll remember this one!
If you're a man, you don't need to pee standing up. This will save you a lot of cleaning.
I started sitting down long before mobiles and tablets. In my first flat the toilet was right beneath a sloping roof and it was absolutely impossible to stand in front of it. ;)
Same here. Went to a college that was until very recently a girl's school. No urinals in the bathrooms, no worries.
Load More Replies...I showed to my hubby the surrounding of the toilet with blacklight, since then he sits :)))
Well, I suppose it saves cleaning for those who *would* clean. A lot of them just leave the mess, judging by the state of basically every public bathroom I've ever been in.
I find it easier to empty my bladder standing up. Also, I clean my own toilet.
Maybe oversharing, but I can't empty my bladder fully if sat down. Kinda got stand if I want to do the job properly!
Best positions for bladder emptying isn't typically standing, though we do vary I know! https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316706
Load More Replies...I (the mummy) was the main toilet trainer for my 3 sons, when they were little. They also saw me going tot he loo much more often than they saw my husband (“will you kids just give me a minute, please?!”), consequently they all default to “sitting down wees”. Now they’re at school, I keep wondering if I should encourage them to do more “standing up wees”, just for the sake of status quo and “fitting in”? I’m a bit of a free range parent so I figured they’d do it if they felt compelled. My husband doesn’t think it’s a big deal (and he went to an all boys school) AND the clean up is less, so….I dunno.
My son sits down to pee at home but stands at school. His reason why was more novelty or lack of patience than needing to fit in according to him. He's a 3rd grader (almost 9). I'm a divorced solo parent so I chose to teach him to sit down rather than deal with p**s on or around the toilet. Some dudes loose their mind and tell me I'm damaging his masculinity. Jokes on them since his dad has always sat down to pee.
Load More Replies...I agree. Mine sits and our toilet definitely smells worse if it's not done daily. Had five brothers and it never smelt this bad.
Load More Replies...I'm all for the comfort of it, but how will it save me a lot cleaning? I don't make a complete mess of standing up to p**s in the first place...... it's not like it's a tiny target and hard to to hit........ even with a mornin' hardon and bent nearly double.
However, I have lived with quite a few women........and i get how you don't have much directional aim.... so i've gone into the loo just after them and lifted the seat to have a wee to find p**s literally dripping off the underside of the seat. And they'd swear blind it's always the guy making a mess and not them. girls... maybe once in a while lift up the seat after you''ve' pissed
Load More Replies...I think it's just common sense. In a wood men are luckier, as peeing is easier for them. At home they can do whatever they prefer and whatever they are most comfortable doing, with the foresight of not doing a mess or at least enough respect to clean up if they do it. In my home my son (not talking about my husband because fortunately is an adult and he can take care of his own toilet habits and/or messes) can stand or sit to pee, but if I find a mess after he went to the bathroom, he has to clean up. His mess, his responsibility. (Edit: typo)
Not an everyday activity, but someone showed me I'd been wasting celery for years. When it goes limp and loses its crunch, you can just soak it in water overnight, and it makes it crisp again.
Many people stand it in a jug of water for this reason. It may also keep growing that way.
I do this with asparagus and it stays fresh much longer!
Load More Replies...I've read it burns more calories to chew celery than you actually get from the celery.
Load More Replies...and lettuce, carrots, parsnips, open cabbages
Load More Replies...I just store it in a cup of water: Cut off the base, wash, then put a few inches of very warm water in a cup. (I use a half litre glass measuring cup.) Then put in the fridge. I use the warm water because it helps open the cells/veins that drink up the water. Learned that when I was working with flowers.
Using a gift card to sign up for free trials.
I'd just add to this...I'm a banker and the amount of fraud out there is really crazy. Go to your local store and buy a greendot or netspend card. Something reloadable. You'll have a credit card that you can use anywhere. And you can only load what you want on it. So you're shopping on amazon and you hit your total, which is say 300 dollars. You transfer 300 to the card, then make the purchase. The funds come off right away and if someone gets your card info, they don't get anything. Worst case scenario is you throw it away and buy a new one if you think it was compromised. They're like 5 bucks. And now your bank account is safe and your information isn't being used. And you don't have to worry about being stranded without funds because you had to close your debit card for fraud. ESPECIALLY travelling. Never just rely on one form of payment. Even if you don't qualify for a credit card, you can get one of these. You can use it to book rental cars and hotel rooms.
Many sites won't let you do that because the numbers on the card indicate it's a gift card...And, yes, I have done this when allowed ;)
My aunt is a physical therapist, she said that if people did simply one teeny tiny change in the way they walk, older people would be in better health.
That oh so simple thing is just walking up steps by placing your whole foot on the step, and keeping your heel on the ground with each step. As opposed to having your heel hang off the step.
That’s it. Requires zero additional effort, just changes the way you walk up stairs. What it does is increase hamstring strength. You already have enough thigh strength from general walking. The amount of older people she sees every day with weak hamstrings is wild.
Yup, especially in old buildings, like my almost 100 year old house. My shoe size is 39-40, so quite average, but my feet won't fit fully on most stairs.
Load More Replies...My feet don't fit on the stairs unless I twist them sideways and that hurts my knees and hips
I realised it was easy to walk better. First, stand up straight. Then, strengthen abs a little, and finally, breathe through your belly. This is a game changer because it relieves the body contractures, helps your metabolism and calms you down.
I'm just here to add on the breathing through your belly part: your body is designed to work this way, kind of like the bellows for fire places, so you get more oxygen into your muscles. But a lot of people complain about not feeling like they get enough air when they breathe correctly. My personal theory is that this is because you have a weakened diaphragm muscle (the one that actually contracts just under your ribs). The more often you breathe properly the easier it will be because that muscle gets worked out and stronger. Eventually you'll start to feel like you don't get enough air if you don't breathe through your belly. Your ribs and lungs aren't made for doing all the work of drawing in air. Also, try to breathe with your mouth closed as much as possible. I read a book that said even if you have trouble breathing through your nose, doing so for as long and as often as you can strengthens the soft tissues in the sinuses and causes them to open up more in the long run.
Load More Replies...I'm now stuck on the 2nd floor, because reading that made me forget how to walk down stairs.
I do not know of any stairs in any house, where my whole foot would fit, and I have relatively small feet
Good lord, where do you live that stairs are allowed to be smaller than your feet?
Load More Replies...The stairs in my Victorian terrace house say "Ha, ha, nice try!"
The stairs in my almost 100 years old Dutch house also laugh in my face... ;-)

If you’re mounting something to the wall that has pre-designed holes on the back, rather than measure between the holes and try to space the nails/screws accordingly, stretch a single piece of painters tape (blue tape) across the back of the piece from just before the beginning of the first hole to just after the last one. Mark each hole with a pencil/pen on the painters tape, then place the tape on the wall and voila, you have a perfect mounting template. I suggest you do a quick check with a laser level on the wall just to make sure your marks are level before drilling.
Or put a bit of toothpaste on the sections that need screws/nails, then press against the wall. Hammer/screw where the toothpaste shows up.
Nah, too much faff. Just put the tape on the spirit level. Mark where the two holes are and hold the spirit level up to the wall. Get it straight in one go, and don't risk putting tape on your walls. Actually my spirit level has slide-able markers for this exact scenario.
Came here to say this. It seems like a great hack until you realize you can't just slap the tape on any which way.
Load More Replies...Here's a tip. Don't hand someone a drill, tell them to turn it on, only to forget to move your finger. That's how my mom drilled my brothers finger all the way through.
Putting the bedding away. Fold the covers and the sheets and put them inside the matching pillowcase. Then they all neatly fit in the cupboard and you can easily find a complete set.
This gives me anxiety, lol. You're totally normal, I know I'm the one who isn't. I have like 30 pairs. I'm obsessed with sheets.
Load More Replies...This is useful only if you care so much about having a matching set on the bed. For me, as long as they are clean, it doesn't matter that much so I don't feel the need to put them away together. Furthermore I have sheets and pillowcases that are somewhat orfan but still perfectly good and I'm not going to trow them away without using them
Yep, I do this, I have like 14 sets of bedding... I may have a slight obsession 🙈
Noooo! It's calming and cozy changing the bed with different colours and styles
Load More Replies...We have different preferences for duvets and pillows and purposely use mismatched beddings to make it easier to find our own. This after years of "pillow fights" each night struggling to find the right pillows. Nothing says I love you as being able to snuggle up at night without having to argue first.
We only have a handful of sheet sets, and half of them are the same colors anyway. I tried this with our king sheets and just ended up with a ball in the pillow case cause stuffing the sheets in was a pain lol maybe I should try the pillowcase trick from up above.
I tried this with queen size sheets and it was more trouble than folding them and stacking sheets and pillowcases together

I would always add oil or butter to my pan right away and wait for it to heat up. You're actually supposed to wait until the pan gets really hot and then add the oil. Doing that makes any pan non-stick.
Be careful with enamelled cast iron pans, it can damage them to be heaten without anything inside (Le Creuset instructions for use)
This is very important indeed. Read the instructions well before heating a new pan for the first time. Also non-stick pans can be severely damaged when being heated up empty. The enamel or teflon or ceramic layer can be damaged or the bottom getting curved
Load More Replies...If you make non-stick pans too hot, toxic PFAS fumes could be emitted (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per-_and_polyfluoroalkyl_substances)
This. Doesn't take much to get that started when there's nothing in a pan.
Load More Replies...a good way to have a grease fire too! Don't heat it too high before adding
For cast iron and steel pans, yes, poor advice for non stick pans, though non stick pans are generally toxic and best avoided anyway
Load More Replies...Do not do this with non-stick. If you heat non-stick up it can off gas - release toxic chemicals. Better to have something in the pan if non-stick coated.
I used to open a banana by pulling the top, then I saw some documentary with a monkey opening them from the bottom and it's 10 times easier.
I also learn that I'm more stupid than a monkey that day.
Also, there's nothing difficult about opening a banana the usual way
Load More Replies...or you just take a sharp knife and slash halfway thru the stem before peeling.
Or dig your fingernail into the top stem a bit, if a knife isn’t handy!
Load More Replies...I think it depends on the banana. Ive tried both, and sometimes it's easy one way, sometimes the other.
Why does this "tip" always picture a human peeling banana from stem then? Just once I'd like to see a pic of the supposed easier way. I'd try it myself but I can't eat bananas...sadly
Search on YouTube. Lots of tutorials on the proper way to peel a 🍌.
Load More Replies...Have tried many times peeling from the bottom. Never again. Peeling from the stem is ridiculously easier.
Taking the safety cap off of deodorant.
I used to try to get my finger nails under it and pop it off. They were quite a pain in the a*s to get off. In my late 20s my roommate was talking to me while unpacking her groceries and she opened her deodorant and just twisted up the stick so that the cap came off. I was shocked
I have seen this before and am still baffled people did not know this.
But then the deodorant gets on the inside of the cap. My OCD will not have it.
I just roll it back down before I put the cap back on.
Load More Replies...What? I have literally never found one that didn't easily come off when I pulled in the little handle bit.
Not really related but it does have to do with a cap. On prescription medication bottles you can flip the cap and screw it back on. One side of the cap is child safety top and the other side is a normal screw top. I learned this a few years ago by accident and it’s been a game changer lol. I hated fighting with the child safety tops!
Emotional processing.
If I was sad, I'd let myself be sad for a tiny bit, and then brush it off... Saying "I don't have time for this", or " I'm stronger than this", or "crying does no good"
Then anger and frustration would build up until arguments over nothing would happen.
I was shown how to "make space" for those "negative" emotions, and just *feel* them until they quieted on their own.
Been doing that every time they show up, and the anger and frustration is gone. Most of the anxiety is gone too.
Did it with fears too, which is making a *huge* difference in relationships.
It's a good thing too; old me wouldn't be able to handle half the s**t that current me is shouldering.
Yoda is the best here. "fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering".
But in this person, fear only led to anger and anger only led to hate when they didn't let themselves feel them.
Load More Replies...As a child, I was either scolded or mocked when crying. Any "negative" emotion had to be hidden at any cost and I spent many hours hiding in bathrooms and closets. I was praised for being a good and pretty girl when I "behaved" and I loved the praise. Then puberty hit. All the bottled-up emotion turned into a monster. It took years of therapy to find a healthy way of dealing with emotions. I taught my kids that emotions are ok and I'm happy every time they feel comfortable showing their emotions. Men do cry and they do need support and a shoulder now and then. It's natural.
Especially when you're a child. Let your children feel their emotions and guide them through it. Don't invalidate their feelings, don't tell them to suck it up. Not allowing your children to feel their emotions early on will result in not being able to handle these emotions as an adult, which results in inappropriate expressions of said emotions. In other words, this is a recipe for the dreaded Borderline Personality Disorder that is also unfairly stigmatized and stereotyped. Repressing emotions is no joke, people.
Congratulations, I working on learning how to do that for myself at the moment. And I'm not finding it easy. Learning how to "feel" is harder than I thought
Idk if this is helpful for anyone besides me but the trick that helped me is observing the emotion as a physical sensation and just putting all my awareness on it without judgement and then as I observe it I let myself know I can choose a new feeling and then as I observe what I'm feeling without judgement it often shifts into something very peaceful. I combine this with mindful breathing and it now is a relatively quick process (less than 5 minutes usually, though the recent loss of my dog sometimes processing the feelings took up to 10 minutes, but the last dog I lost I didn't talk to humans unless necessary for an entire year so this is huge) Used to be medicated for a lot of mental illness diagnoses and haven't needed to be in over 6 years now. Observing my emotions as physical sensations without attaching stories or judgements to them and breathing into the feeling while gently letting the feeling know it's free to exit feels like my secret weapon.
Load More Replies...I'm glad OP was I was shown how to "make space" for those "negative" emotions, and just *feel* them until they quieted on their own. I'd like to know it too.
Right? What is the trick? I just stew and stew and get more anxious.
Load More Replies...Feeling sad or depressed uses up a lot of emotional energy. If I'm trying to fight those feelings, I'm expending even more energy, leading to anger and frustration. I just let those feelings be without trying to fight them, knowing they will pass, and I've saved myself a lot of unnecessary upset.
"Feed yourself to the demons." was the cryptic japanese martial arts advice I learnt this lesson through. Thank you for putting it in understandable words.
you cut tomatoes with a serrated edged knife. It's just... so much easier. there is no squishing of the tomato.
Or given how few of us actually sharpen their knives, because we can't afford flash ones, use a serrated knife.
Load More Replies...they did tests on ameica's test kitchen...a serrated knife works best on anything with two textures...tomatoes, bread, pecan pie...clean slices...no smushed or uneven pieces...
There are actual tomato knives, they are serrated and have a forked tip.
The ones I've seen don't have a forked tip, but I have seen knives called 'tomato knives' and they were serrated.
Load More Replies...Best thing to me...a sharpening steel with most knife sets. Quick hone before starting
Yep. A few seconds before every use, and usually after drying too.
Load More Replies...yep. And onions are easier to cut with a small-toothed serrated knife (like 1mm serrations), or a super sharp knife. If the knife is even slightly blunt they flop around and you end up cutting yourself.
Yes, I use a serrated knife to cut off ends and slice in about half or a few wedges, then the smooth type for chopping.

Putting onions in the refrigerator for a half hour/ hour before cutting makes it so you don’t cry from the fumes. Learned this working in a restaurant kitchen having to prep 100 lbs of onions every shift. Refrigerating them first was a necessity.
Guess this depends on your local climate and the type of fridge you use. In most of Europe a lot of vegetables and most fruit should not be kept in a standard refrigerator, even not in the veggie-drawer. For eggs the opinions are mixed. They are not sold out of the cooling, but most people prefer to keep them in the door of the fridge.
Load More Replies...Or just wear swimming googles, I keep an old pair in my kitchen draw, you look goofy af but it's a game changer
That's what I've been doing for 20 years. I used to have a set that I'd salvaged from two other pair. So I'd be in the kitchen cutting onions with two different shapes and colors on each eye. My kid also uses goggles.
Load More Replies...Agreed. I keep my onions in the refrigerator and my eyes still water like crazy. I found it best to chop them in an enclosed space like a slap chopper or a food processor. If I have to slice them on a mandolin, I have a small portable battery powered fan that I keep right next to me to blow the fumes away from my face.
Load More Replies...Rinse the onion and the knife with cold water before cutting. Always works for me.
I put my onions in the freezer for about an hour works every time no more tears
Those tiny, obnoxious cans of tomato paste. You can take both ends off with the can opener, and use a wooden spoon to push on the top. It comes out clean like a push pop!
Yep! And I typically only need a tablespoon or two for a recipe, so I portion out the rest by tablespoons, freeze on a sheet pan and then pop them in a ziplock. I used to throw so much away!
kate h, thank you, thank you, thank you! I have yet to make a recipe that calls for more than 2 tablespoons of tomato paste and then I end up throwing the rest of the can away. I’ll never have to do that again, thanks to you! You made my day. 😎
Load More Replies...I’ve done this for years until I was able to get the tomato paste in tubes.
Sliding your thumb on the spacebar of your phone will move the cursor.
Actually very manufacturer or OS dependent. On Samsung devices swiping the space bar is often used for switching between input languages and their corresponding keyboard layouts.
It's less of a swipe, more of a press and drag left/right
Load More Replies...Doesn't quite work for me. I often overshoots. When I backtrack, it overshoots the other way. Often I ended up deleting the whole word and retyping. Why can't they put forward / back arrows? For easy and precise cursor positioning.
Hey, it works on my phone (Pixel 6)! This is a game changer for sure, thank you!!
Cleaning the stupid microwave. I used to scrub it and hurt my back before I stumbled on a video about microwaving vinegar beforehand and it really works. I am disabled so all that time I could have cleaned it without hurting myself all those years.
Or you can also wipe it down after any use if you notice it's dirty. I hardly ever have to "scrub" mine, it's kept clean because I keep an eye on it.
If you cover anything you microwave, then there shouldn't be anything more than steam to clean up. Simple sheet of kitchen towel will suffice.
Load More Replies...Half a cup of water, a quarter cup of vinegar, boils until you have a lot of steam inside the oven, wait for five minutes and just wipe it with a soft cloth. The smell of vinegar disappears quickly, and the steam and acid get rid of the grease. Just be careful when you open the door, because the smell of hot vinegar is very strong.
or get a removable plastic cake lid thingy and put it over your food when microwaving so it doesn't explode food all over the interior. managed to keep mine goop free for years like that.
Just throw a wet dish towel in there for a minute and wipe - easy, peasy, no vinegar needy.
I microwave a wet kitchen sponge for 2 minutes, and wait for it to cool down....it steams off any old food and you can just wipe it up!
Load More Replies...Should work on average and above average intelligent microwaves, too
Load More Replies...How dirty is the microwave if you're hurting yourself scrubbing it?? ;)~ we don't use ours often but if it's been a while since I cleaned it, I microwave a wet sponge for about 45 seconds. Helps loosen the sticky bits.
I just remember that one dude being told you could wait for the shower to warm up instead of having to stand in it cold as it warms up lmao.
You can always put a bucket to catch water for other uses, such as flushing the toilet or watering the garden
Load More Replies...Dad and grandpa taught me how to fix this. It’s a little circulating pump that you fix to your plumbing that keeps the hot water running through the pipes until you go to use it. It takes seconds for the hot water to start and no wasted water
In my new home the landlord (a friend) who is a gardener, and this is on a farm, installed a tub faucet at the bottom. Easy to wash dirty feet and run the tub faucet to warm the water, get in the shower, pull up the stopper and voila, you’re shower is warm.
Put a bucket under the showerhead and save the water! Use it to flush the toilet! Double save.
I turn on the water when I'm in the shower & just direct it away from me until it warms up. 🤷♀️
Boots first, then corset.
Rejoinder: pee first, then corset. Else it's a pain in the a*s trying to get your skirt/underwear back in place underneath!
Felt like I was in a time warp for a second…..why are we still wearing corsets?
If you know you are supposed to do something simple (take out the trash, clean your room, etc) but you just can't find the motivation, stop.
Decide what you want to get done (it has to be something you can do as a single action.)
Decide how you would feel if you had completed it (relieved, content, happy, etc)
Ask yourself how long you are willing to go without that feeling (a day, an hour, five minutes, etc)
Now you aren't dreading doing the thing, you are asking yourself why you are denying yourself the feeling you want to feel.
Procrastinating Brain… yes, you will feel good about taking that trash out… but do you know what would make you feel really great?! Chocolate… cloud watching… sliding up and down the passage in your socks…
I am a professional procrastinator, I should be able to breeze through a doctorate on the topic. The only thing that works is when I feel the least bit motivated I tell myself "just do it", thanks Nike you at least made one contribution to the world.
I find working on stuff I don't like or want to do for 10 to 15 minutes, then moving on to whatever, means I get more done than I realize, but I don't get bogged down doing things I hate. I do this 3 or 4 times a day (maybe an hour total). House is neater, things mostly put up, dishes at least rinsed (usually put in dishwasher), etc. It's not too bad doing something for just a few minutes 😉
Very nice... I say, it's not what do I want to do, but what do I want to have done. And then, chocolate!
that doesn't work for me I feel annoyed after doing things I didn't want to do.
I don't know if this process would work, but I do know that if I don't have the executive function to complete the task, I don't have the executive function to follow this process either. I find that telling myself to do things out loud and by name helps. "Deborah, take out the trash now." It's like telling a child to do their chores, except the child is also me.
Using electrical tape. Typically, I use this tape to wrap electrical connections like my security cameras or TV cable to weatherproof them. If I need to change out the connection in a couple of years, it results in a gooey mess after struggling to remove the tape. A pro showed me that you spiral wrap the tape over the connection sticky side out, reverse at the end and wrap sticky side down back over the first wrap. When you need to replace it you only have to cut away the ends and the remaining tape is a non-sticky tube that is easy and less sticky to remove.
Or use proper connectors and vulcanic tape or even a small junction box to weatherproof it properly and won't have to change the tapes anymore.
Buy yourself a seam ripper. It's a sewing tool. You'll use half the tape and remove any that are glued together. Also gets long hair off a vacuum roller.
We used to use teflon tape (ltypically used for plumbing joints) under electrical. Works great, and is easier to apply than trying to put electrical tape on sticky side up.
Add vinegar to the wash, and your clothes last longer before getting stinky. I suspect fungi / general microflora are involved.
Replace clothes with lettuce and tomatoes, and once you retrieve your fork from behind the picture, you can have lunch.
Best comment I've read in a long time! I'd upvote you 100 times if I could. Thank you for the chuckle :-)
Load More Replies...I tried this and it made my clothes feel crunchy?
Load More Replies...If your washing machine is leaving clothes smelly then it needs thoroughly disinfecting and cleaning, or complete replacement. Regular quick clean and filter change will make them last, fresh, for many years.
Wash your machine regularly and your clothes won't smell bad. 60°C minimum, with white vinegar or an appropriate product, every 60 cycles.
This.. do this not vinegar. Clean the damn machine properly clothes will smell much nicer.
Load More Replies...Also (the exception being underwear), you don't have to wash your clothes after wearing them just once....
I didn't realize this until my first real job.. I also realized that "dry cleaning" doesn't really clean the clothes. It just deodorizes & removes stains.
Load More Replies...Me too! Works like a charm as long as you add enough vinegar. No funny smell either.
Load More Replies...Add: The last sentence is correct. Washing on lower temperatures in combination without cleaning the interior of the machine (drawer, rubber, filter,...) itself is a huge invitation card for funghi and microflora. They thrive well at temperatures lower than 60 degree Celsius, the soapy residue of fluid washing detergents or additions is feeding them. A dash if vinegar is also helpful to remove chalk, same idea as for cleaning the kettle
You also need a well cleaned and maintained washing machine, otherwise the vinegar will release all the piled up gunk and make your clothes smell.. well like the gunk.
Been doing this for years and definitely prefer it over fabric softener as vinegar doesn't give your clothes that slimey waxy feel to it. Also helps to keep the machine clean.
Rinsing my hair - I used to rinse with hot water and assume I just had frizzy and dry hair. Rinsed with cold water once and realized I'd lived far too long with frizzy hair for no reason.
Indeed .. but you just rinse your body with warm water.. then step outside..head in the shower.. cold rinse. Tataaa..
Load More Replies...Note: if you have curly frizzy hair, this only helps a little. Atleast with me anyway; my curls and frizz refuse to be tamed and minimally cooperate
Also, comb hair with conditioner in the shower, let it sit for a couple of minutes before finding, use a t-shirt to gently wrap your head, ( I have curly hair and this has made a tremendous difference). In winter I have tepid showers, sometimes cool showers. It is believed that this boosts immunity. As well, our skin is a ‘bio film,’ even though I have naturally oily skin I rinse every second day, ( cleaning essentials of course). Contrary to common belief less soap is better for skin, nor is it good to wash hair daily. The body adjusts! I used to wash my hair daily but now do twice per week, ( more if I sweat a lot). Baby shampoo! It’s ph balanced and gentler….
I use flour sack cloths/towels. The fabric is smooth like a t-shirt.
Load More Replies...Too many people think they need to take a HOT shower, big mistake, its strips the skin of too much oil and opens all your pores which can cause pimples. Especially on the face! Just warm enough to be comfortable is best.
But I like hot showers.. any other way to help these side effects?
Load More Replies...Or just simply rinse it with apple vinegar diluted in water. It will not only close hair scales, but also make your head skin healthy.
I started not rinsing with cold water but when I am done just kinda running my hand through it while it is cold
Having a hand shower attachment helps. You can aim the cold water away from your body. Used to do the cold water hair rise all the time to help with frizz but got out of the habit and forgot about it. This reminded me!
How to properly secure a towel around the waist after a shower. Instead of tucking the hem inwards, you fold it outwards and down, much more secure, you can like, run around and not worry about it falling off.
Can someone please explain this to me I don't understand. Is the picture showing the wrong way to do it?
I was taught how to carry my babies on my back with a towel wrapped around our bodies, then folding/tucking/rolling outwards and down, as described - very secure! But it was only after I’d been doing that for a while that I realised I could do the same with my towel after a shower…felt a bit silly learning that the long way around.
If the picture's showing the wrong way of doing it, I don't trust this at all.
Brushing my hair. No one taught me how to do it right because I always had short hair as a kid, and my mom somehow got the impression I knew to brush the ends first, and work up to the roots. Nope. I started at the top and would rip down. No wonder my hair was so bad. But then I saw Tangled AS AN ADULT and realized I had been brushing my hair wrong my entire life.
Wait, I'm confused. What's the proper way? Very curly frizzy shoulder length hair here. Edit: thank you everyone for your kind comments! Greatly appreciated :D
I am not an expert, and certain hair types require different methods, but here's my understanding of it. First, don't brush curly/frizzy hair - use a wide-toothed comb. Start near the ends and comb gently downwards. Move the comb up to just above where you started the previous stroke & comb downwards again, spritzing with detangler if necessary. Repeat until you are combing from root to tip. If your hair is very dry, prone to tangling, and/or frizzy, invest in a good conditioner.
Load More Replies...I think I have enough bar soap for the rest of my lifetime, handmade by a friend. I cut the bars into pieces and even those pieces last a long time. I just keep the unused bars in my drawers so they harden.
i brush from the tops down. then somebody told me I was doing it wrong. i still brush it the same way.
In my experience it matters less the length/quality of your hair or where you start, and more if you're having difficult tangles if you use detangler spray or not. That s**t is magic, it's basically lube for your tangles.
Long curly hair here always start at the bottom working your way up. Stops the pain of ripping hair out from the roots
Lol omg same...I just learned to brush hair from the bottom.....way too old
When the soap bar gets to the last sliver, you can just stick it on to the new bar to use it up completely.
I put that last sliver in one of those small mesh bags that you receive when you buy jewelry (Closed by little cords). When wet, it foams quite nicely when you rub it against your skin :)
I started using bar soap in the shower to use less plastic. Works just as good as liquid body wash and its less expensive. I stick the sliver on the back of the new bar all time. It's a fun combination when its two different types of soaps.
or if you collect a few of them you can add a small bit of water, e.g. a tablespoon, boil up in a pot (low heat), and pour into a mold to make new bar.
I save all our old chunks and boil them in a double boiler to pour into silicone molds for new soap. Adding the slivers to new soaps never really worked for me, they'd fall off and stuff.
Pressing the old soap sliver worked better for me when I'd keep my soap in a soapdish (it would be softer, easier to press), but I don't anymore, so it doesn't work for me now. I just use the old sliver until it crumbles, then toss the bits.
Load More Replies...It always falls off while I'm using it. This used to be a Teen magazine tip LOL. They also said to save them in a cup & melt them together to make a new bar. Same with mostly used-up lipsticks. Of course they also said boys are attracted to a "band box" appearance & I'm still trying to figure what that is.
Ew for me. I've gone to liquid soap and can't go back to bars, no residuals from others usage in shared bathrooms and a little bit froths up so much and the scent is strong and fresh right through to the end of the bottle unlike bars exposed to air and dried out with the scent evaporated out of them.
Long-pressing on a letter on your phone will show you various accents to choose from. Voilà!
Useful for getting around Bored Panda’s language filters so one can say shít, áss, and bütthole!

You can take the silverware basket out of the dishwasher when unloading it. 💀
The dishwasher we had when I was young had the silverware basket zip-tied in. 🤔
That's probably how it came when your parents bought it... seems like a way to keep them together during storage and transport, and to not have them stolen in the store.
Load More Replies...New dishwasher has an upper third rack for flatware, so took out the flatware basket and put it under the sink to hold sponges, cleaners, whatever. Both work great. I'm so pleased with myself.
We have 2 baskets now. When the load is finished, the clean one is emptied and left on the sink. The one on the sink that is now full, goes in the dishwasher. So much easier.
Put on pillow covers. I used to shove the pillow in there and struggle with it until my wife showed me how to flip the pillow case inside out and cover the pillow while flipping right side out.
Never understand people doing this. Just put the corners in the corners and shake.
Depends how tight fitting your pillowcases are. You don't put a condom on by shoving then end in and shaking it about it bit, do you? You can use the same technique for duvet covers.

The inside shower curtain goes inside tub.
It goes in the tub WHILE SHOWERING ! If you want it to dry properly without mold, you have to get it out after you're finished, even if that means you will have to clean up the droplets a little later. It's just water, no harm done, but the curtain remains clean.
They're talking about a shower liner, which goes inside the tub while the "decorative" curtain goes on the outside.
Load More Replies..."Inside" shower curtains? As in people fixing two curtains on one shower? I've never seen that.
A waterproof one (plastic or vinyl usually) goes on inside, cloth decorative one goes on outside. You use the same hooks for both so they move at the same time.
Load More Replies...It’s also important to let the “inside” shower curtain dry fully so it doesn’t get moldy. Leave the curtain open for a while so the tub/shower gets dry, then fully close (extend) the curtain so it dries.
I've never encountered two curtains... and I'm nearing 50. Just buy a decent quality one in a pattern of your choice.

or you just fold a small part of the tape over at the end after each usage.
I do that, but I like G'ma's idea better. No need to cut off the folded over portion before taping.
Load More Replies...Fück, help! I need to save this tape and I can't find the bread to help me! 🤣
Pennies also work! Did this with a roll of duct tape at my job months ago, forgot about it, and went back to find my coworkers still use it.
Jut run one finger nail LIGHTLY around the roll until you find the end, THEN you will not get an end that does NOT stick on the whatever! Or otherwise, If you come here and want to use the tape, bring your own!
I use a large paper clip, easier to remove. We moved last year, I had 100s of boxes to pack. That hack saved my sanity with the packing tape.
Felt like an idiot for years I’d bite the shells of pistachios open.
A friend showed me I can just use a half shell to lever the others open 😅
*Warning* Shelling is no problem, however, recently I was eating the damn things while watching TV. I couldn't stop. I ate a lot of nuts. About 3 hrs later I woke up to the worst tummy and back ache. Felt exacting like I was in labor. Lasted a couple of hours. Beware the little demon nuts.
Those demon nuts do be out there causing gastric issues.
Load More Replies...That's funny. I felt like an idiot because for years I'd try to pry them open with a half shell. Then someone showed me that I could simply bite them open. Much easier!
I suck on the pistachio shell for a second before i open it. I just pop it opened with mu teeth when I am done. Just for a second so salt coats my mouth.
NEVER bite a pistachio open. My husband used to do that and one day he broke a tooth.
Yeah, only learned that fairly recently so I would hurt my fingers getting them open. Only rich people had pistachios when I was a kid and only saw them at parties. Didn’t think they were real with their bright red colour. Imagine my surprise as an adult to see them in their natural state.
Cut bell peppers. For years I did it in a messy way where it got seeds everywhere.
Then one day I decided that there was probably a better way so I watched YouTube.
What you do is you cut the top and bottom off first, pull the seeds out in one piece, then cut down the sides and unroll it like paper. Then you cut the unrolled piece into strips.
This post is basically like "see this picture? Do the opposite."
Load More Replies...Cut off the bottom? Why? Cut in a circle around the stem, pull it out. Cut the pepper in pieces along the ridges, cut out the seeds...
Verena this is the way to go in my opinion too. This way you waste less fruit and there is not much mess except for a few seeds which your always have flew away or sticking on the inside
Load More Replies...A good way to waste a lot of the pepper. And there's no need at all to cut off the bottom.
That's exactly what I was thinking, this sounds like a huge waste! AND a lot more complicated than simply cutting it in half top to bottom and popping the seed cluster out with your fingers
Load More Replies...Even faster trick: push the top in and pull the seeds out. Literally only takes 3 seconds.
I just, I don't know, cut the top off and pull the seeds out. It's not messy.
Try it. If it's messy, don't do it again. No need for stress.
Load More Replies...I cut down the lines and pull them away from th top of the pepper and seeds usually come out all at once.

Washing my hair. Had bad dandruff from high school into my 20s.
Turns out you don’t need to shampoo daily and less is more with conditioner.
Shaved my head for 10 years just so my scalp could heal.
Finally started going to a stylist and she explained it in a way I understood and now I have long luscious curls.
I suffered with this a lot. Dandruff has 3 causes, as I understand it. 1. surface fungal infection. Anti-dandruff shampoo can help with this. A further symptom is crusty buildup on the scalp, like dried plasma. That's a fungal dandruff. 2. psoriasis. Reducing shampoo usage and just rinsing with water helps. Also identifying allergens. 3. Dry scalp. This is normal. You can resolve again by reducing strong soap usage.
OMG yes, people look at me like I'm a crackhead when I say I actually stopped shampooing my hair (unless it's like full of mud or something) and only condition it twice a week or so and my hair has never been better. Started bc I was broke and needed to save money, turned out to be better for me, who woulda thunk?
Yeah I can only shampoo and condition once a weak otherwise my scalp and hair get super dry

Yes! All SLS loaded shampoos (including anti dandruff, sensitive and baby shampoos) really set off contact dermatitis with me. I have to shop for specific SLS free shampoos or I'm scratching my scalp until it bleeds and am buried in a mound of my own skin flakes.
Load More Replies...Used to have very oily hair with a lot of dandruff. I washed it every other day. Then I got dreadlocks and was told not to wash my hair for 3 weeks so it would "set". Stupid advice in hindsight but I did it anyway. Went crazy with itch after about a week but in the end that itch was gone. Now I wash my hair with shampoo about once a month. No more oily hair, no dandruff AT ALL. And no my dreads do not smell. I even went without shampoo for about 6 months (used Baking soda instead) but I missed the scent of the shampoo.
Same! I swear, your hair and scalp do SO much better after that initial adjustment period. I used to over shampoo and constantly struggled with dandruff. Since dreading it I wash once a month, and it's never been healthier!
Load More Replies...Yes. Pretty much every day. I have never had dandruff or itchy scalp and if I don't wash it, my hair looks depressed.

I used to have the worst time putting eye drops in as I would hover and try to drop right on the eyeball. A doctor told me to just drop it on the side of my nose and it would find it's way to my eye because of, like, gravity.
But then you're introducing bacteria into your eye, I can't believe a Dr would recommend that
My thought too. Bacteria, face oil, and whatever residue from dirt, or lotions…. This method is a Nope for me.
Load More Replies...Easy way I do is by putting a drop in the corners of my eyes when leaning my head back and then turn my head left or right so the drop can travel down the rest of my eye. Works too in helping get something out of your eye much easier too that way.
Easiest way I have found is to run away squealing and hide.
Load More Replies...I get weirded out trying to aim the drops to my eye area, so I use a mirror and pull the bottom lid down a little to make a "pocket" and drop the drops in there, then I can pick which corner of the eye too, if I'm trying to flush something out. I don't remember where I saw it, I think the eye doctor mentioned it for a steroid drop or something before I had my lasik done.
Wouldn't that collect whatever dirts & germs from the side of your nose and bring it to your eyes?
Also, just do one eye at a time and wait and make sure what you’ve put is not going to harm your eyesight. there have been people who have put eyedrops in their eyes that have been tampered with. I have read more than a couple stories about people who put products that look very similar container wise in their eyes only to realize too late that it is not eyedrops, If you wait a little while between eyes you can at least make sure you can read the container and also find your phone to call for medical…

My parents boiled corn in the cob I’ve only eaten boiled corn at home for years… when I was 25 someone said try roasting in over with seasoning… I will never boil corn again.
In Africa we barbecue corn. Also we mostly eat white corn, not that weird yellow sweet corn that yall eat in the northern hemisphere. grilled-wh...736313.jpg
Better yet. Cut the stem end off, microwave it, then squeeze the cob out of the husk like toothpaste. See video, but cut the end off before nuking. It's freaking magic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AlPLcG73L8
I've discovered corn on the cob in the air fryer and it's so delicious! Simply place the corn in the basket of the air fryer. Rub the olive oil evenly on the corn. Add salt and pepper or whatever seasonings you like. Cook in the air fryer at 370F degrees for 12-15 minutes or until tender
I fill a pan with cold water, add a cup of sugar (yes 1 cup) then put the corn in and bring to a boil. Let it boil for about a minute then let it rest. Add some kosher salt and it is salty sweet goodness!
My mum just put it in the microwave, and I've only ever done the same...
Try working in aluminum foil, adding butter and salt,a little garlic, and throwing on the grill while you cook the rest of the steaks/chicken/whatever. Turn a couple times. Don't unwrap until you get w ready to eat. Best ever!!!
I folded all my washclothes and they barely fit in the drawer. My kid said "why don't you just stack them unfolded in there?" It's brilliant. They fit perfectly and it saves time. It sounds stupid, but it was a game changer.
I alwaus thought a washcloth was what Brits call a (face) flannel. Doesn't make sense either way round.
Load More Replies...See, I'm confused because I can't imagine possessing that many that they'd need stacking, if they mean facecloths or tea towels. One on the go, one being laundered, switch and repeat? Although I can see if you had a baby you might need more...
Both. In my house we use “washcloth” for body and “dishrag” for face, but they can both be called washcloth.
Load More Replies...You can put soap bars/scraps in those little drawstring fabric bags. It doesn't slip out of your hands, get too small to use, and it also exfoliates as a bonus! Also you can hang it from a hook (I have a shelf thing with hooks in my shower) so it dries out and doesn't get gross and mushy.
Yes, that’s what I do, as I explained under another article ( I use a small jewelry mesh bag, I know some people use the foot of old nylon tights) Plus, it foams nicely .
I stopped using bar soap in the shower, and suddenly never had to clean soap scum off the glass. Liquid soap on washcloth all the way. Started using bar soap for handwashing because dawn is not handsoap. :)
Peeling garlic. HATED doing it until I learned to just give it a big whack first.
Yep. Flat side of the knife....press....peel.
Load More Replies...I have a peeler that came with my fancy garlic grater dish. It's a silicone tube, you put the garlic in and rub it between your hands. Works mosy of the time (every one in a while I have to pull the rest of a peel off). I also saw someone put it in a Tupperware container with the lid on and shake it until it was peeled
I don't fully trust that this method would work but I'll try it. Lol

You're not supposed to rinse after brushing your teeth. You're supposed to allow toothpaste residue to sit on your teeth for like 30 mins. You just spit and move on. Don't rinse your mouth with water.
I really wish a dentist would confirm this, I don`t sit well with this idea
I had two dentists confirming it, spit the toothpaste but do not rinse, and do not use mouthwash right after brushing, wait 30 min at least, then floss and mouthwash
Load More Replies...I haven't rinsed my teeth after brushing for many many years. I'm 66 years old and haven't had one tooth problem in over 40 years. I can't say 100% it's because I don't rinse, but I always believed it was a good idea to leave toothpaste residue on my teeth for added protection.
I never rinse too and never have tooth problems. Interesting connection.
Load More Replies...I know that's the way you're supposed to do it, but no way in héll am I actually doing it. Bleurgh.
30 minutes? Nope! No way. I won't even do it for 5. I'll stick with rinse and spit.
I rinse so that I don't vomit. Tried many different toothpastes/powders and the mildest still make me heave
I don't think this is accurate. There is an abrasive in toothpaste that you aren't supposed to swallow. It won't kill you or anything, but it's not good.
My dentist would highly disagree with that. She specifically said toothpastes nowadays can be quite abrasive. So after brushing she told me to rinse good and brush again with a clean (no toothpaste) brush to get rid of everything.
Cleaning a frying pan with burnt grease. If you put it back on the stove while it’s still hot with a little bit of water it will boil the grease loose. It makes it much easier to clean that way. Scrub it right after you pour the boiling water out and before you use soap.Don’t put soap in the pan while it’s on the stove or it will cause a chemical reaction and you will get particles in the pan which can make it potentially unsafe to cook in after, especially depending on the soap. I still even after doing this put the dishes through an antibacterial cycle is the dishwasher though. To many years in kitchens I guess lol. Hope it helps ❤️
Uh, in my experience grease and water will lead to a burning hot mess. But whatever works for you.
If the water is cold and the grease is hot, yes. If the two are with the almost same temperature (not too hot or boiling), it works.
Load More Replies...Cover it with a mixture if baking soda and water on it, and let it sit for a while. It should come off easily then.

If a metal lid is not coming off of a jar, instead of struggling, run hot water on the lid for a minute, it'll come off easily.
Personally I poke a knife under the lid to break the suction point and it comes off in seconds.
Yes! I use a spoon, but it's the same idea. :-)
Load More Replies...Tap the edge of the lid against the counter top to break the suction.
I do that, or tap a butter knife around the top of the lid a few times and the lid opens so easily every time
Load More Replies...Rubber band around the outside gives you all the grip. If you're particularly weak in the grip department then a wet towel/facecloth. You can also buy circular grippers to take advantage of leverage. Assuming you're too scared to bang the lid of a glass jar on a countertop, or stick a knife in somewhere (which I am).
Not necessarily easily, but easier. I usually use non-stick mats as well. I had many people suggest using a knife or spoon under the seal, but that was far less successful when I tried (even they failed at it).
Useful if you want to reseal it. If I intend to use the contents of a vacuum-sealed jar all at once and don't want to save it for reuse, I find the quickest method is usually to pierce the lid (to break the vacuum) before opening.
I hit with my fist in the middle of the lid. That usually does the trick.

TED talk about tying your shoelaces? They are really scraping the bottom of the barrel, aren't they?
Not scraping! Most people have been tying them wrong their whole lives, including me. Once I learned the correct way my laces no longer come untied and just look better with the correct orientation.
Load More Replies...Hmm, never had a problem with my laces before. And is there really a "wrong" way and a "right" way? If the laces stay then you're doing something right. Right?
I don't know if it's the same one, but someone showed one like this at work years ago as part of a team exercise, to show how you can always learn from others. I was the only one who was already doing it right, made the presenter angry. It was obvious to me WHY everyone else was doing it wrong, the same reason my little brother did it wrong for years. I taught him how sitting across from him, so he learned backwards. (Sorry G)
This one should be higher. Bringing the lace “loop” around the opposite way insures it won’t come untied.
I recently got Plantar Fasciitis and found out I was ignorant about several things: 1. Plantar Fasciitis is not some kind of foot warts(not sure why I thought this). 2. I thought shoes were supposed to be tight, but a specialist told me there should be about a finger width between your toe and the tip of the shoe, I was wearing a full size too small. 3. I thought you were supposed to get shoes that match the shape of your feet. So having long, skinny feet that had a relatively low arch, I always wore Converse All-Stars. I now know that your shoes NEED supportive insoles so that it doesn't hurt the tendons and muscles in your feet. I didn't know that shoes could be comfortably worn as long as they do now because I have shoes that actually fit with supportive insoles. I wish I knew about all this sooner!
Where did this person buy shoes? At least here the shops make sure the shoe fits
In the USA, department stores and the like do not have people who will help you fit a shoe. Maybe if you go to a specialty shoe store you will find knowledgeable clerks who will help you. Even in chain shoe stores, the employees could care less whether you're getting a right fit, at least in my area.

Get shoes that support the arch of your foot or use insoles that do the job. PF hurts. Can speak from experience.
Load More Replies...Also, side support from the shoe along the ball area of the foot is important too, especially if you have high arches or supine or pronate. Good side support saves on a lot of foot pain.
On 1…I thought the same! I thinks it’s due to plantar warts? So, we hear that and assume it’s warts, not excruciating arch pain. On 3…I just take out the Converse insole and buy ones with arch support and cushioned heels. Problem solved.
Shovel snow from the bottom of the driveway up, rather than top down, to save your back. Especially if you have a steep driveway I don’t know if there’s an even better way but in my area, everyone starts at the top, pushing snow from the middle out to the sides on the driveway to throw the snow on the grass or rocks. Our driveway is steep and this was really uncomfortable for me. One day I decided to start from the bottom and Holy Schmoly it was so much more comfortable. You can stand a little below the part you’re scooping so you don’t have to bend over as far. Life-changing for back pain!
Also, don't wait until it stops snowing to do this. All you are doing is making your job harder. Several easy jobs while it's snowing is better than one hard job after it stops and has had time to compress.
That’s also a great rule for house chores! Do them more often in little doses!

Pinching the edge of a record to get it out of the sleeve. That's how you get noise on the beginning of every record. Proper way is to hold sleeve horizontal and slide the record out onto your hand so that the ends of your fingers are on the label and the edge of the record is in the crook of your thumb and palm. If you don't feel confident sliding the record out, you can bow the sleeve slightly and reach in until the tips of your fingers are on the label.

Cooking rice. I f****d it up every time, didn't have the space for a rice cooker, ended up using packet rice or boil in the bag. A chinese friend showed me the finger method and I been eating perfect rice almost every day ever since.
2 cups water 1 cup rice (for basmati etc), or 1.5:1 for white. Use the same cup, get to boil then leave to simmer till water is almost gone in closed pot. Obviously scoop the rice first.
This! And for perfect results, put the rice in first and roast it just a little(!) bit. If you like the taste, do this with butter.
Load More Replies...Rinse rice til water is clear, pour rice into pan and level it. Add just enough water so that when you touch the top of rice with pointer fingerthe water is only to your first knuckle. Works.every.time.
Load More Replies...Long grain rice. 1 cup rice to 2 cups water. Bring water to a rapid boil. Salt if wanted. Add rice to boiling water, stir briefly. Cover, remove from heat for 20 minutes. Alternatively, cover and simmer on low for 15 to 20 minutes. With both DO NOT REMOVE LID! Be aware, simmered rice may stick to pan. After time, stir and fluff with fork.
It’s important that once you add the rice to the boiling water, stir it a couple times to prevent clumping, then bring it to a boil again, then take it off the heat and cover it.
I never ate much rice at home until I got an instant pot, now I eat it regularly, and it's good for way more than just a rice cooker.

Pour my beer right. I was pouring it slowly for years without letting it froth. I recently saw a video where a guy explained why you need to let your beer froth while pouring it so that the gases are released and doesn't bloat us up.
I was taught to tilt the glass and pour slowly until halfway, then raise the glass and pour from a bit higher to create froth. I don't drink beer so I can't tell what kind of difference it makes if any.
Balance - you get a good amount in the glass as you don't froth it too soon. Then you do want to froth it to some extent exactly as the person explains, to reduce the amount of gas swallowed.

You can throw the plastic laundry cup in with the wash…
This keeps it from getting gummed up with layers of old detergent liquid. Toss the lid in with the clothes and it's sparkling clean when the load is done.
I've learnt how to measure the liquid quantity without a cup. The answer is a "glop". Start the pour and then stop about 1 second after.
I use laundry strips. No worries about gunk and I’m not sending even more plastic to the landfill. I think our priorities are questionable if we worry more about having a sparkling clean laundry cup than the enormous amount (collectively) that plastic laundry jugs use.
I used to drag/sway the ice cube tray back and forth under the sink.... until someone showed me you can just tilt it and the water overflows downward.
No one really showed me, but up until I was 16 I would just sit on the bowl of the toilet and did not use the seat. I have no clue why i did that and did not think to use the seat. One day I was in a rush with stomach issues and had no time to put the seat up. I sat my a*s on the seat and thought to myself “this is definitely the way pooping is supposed to be done”….life changing

Reheating food in the oven is so much better than the microwave lol
I love our toaster oven for this reason. It's still slower and takes more energy but it's better thsn than the regular oven energy wise and things taste better than microwaving 99 percent of the time. Just a personal preference though. Haven't had a microwave in years.
Load More Replies...Actually, the problem is most people don't know how to use a microwave. For example, how many people realize that there are power settings? You want to reheat something, you set the power to 30% and heat it for a few minutes. No more lava and ice food... It's like treating an oven the same way and using 500 degrees and just vary the time, thinking it will work.
So the power setting in most microwaves isn't what people think. It's cycling on and off quickly with longer or shorter gaps. There are microwaves now that do actually alter the power but they are more expensive and rare. Mostly not putting food in the middle helps out. It's supposed to be on the edge

Nobody showed me but I realised that I wasn't shampooing my hair right. I was putting shampoo in and then rinsing it out immediately. My hair would still always be greasy and I had scalp problems. Then I thought hmm maybe I need to leave it in longer so the chemical reactions actually have time to work? Now I really massage it around and leave it in for a few minutes. Now my hair is so much cleaner and nicer, and no scalp issues. It's probably obvious but took me a long time to think of.
I had to do this for months as my hair was falling out due to unavoidable poor diet due to a medical issue. It was easier on my scalp and my hair didn’t come out as muc. Also, no brushes that pulled on my hair.
Hope you are better now and your hair has recovered.

Load More Replies...Someone told me I used chopsticks wrong. I put the second one on the side of my ring finger, with my index and middle fingers on top of it. The person told me to just hold it like I would hold a pen, and I was like, wtf, this *is* how I hold a pen. Then I realized I hold a pen differently from most people. I've since retrained myself to hold chopsticks correctly, but I'm not even going to try to change how I write because it's just ingrained so deeply (and also, it doesn't really matter anyway).
I also hold a pen wrong (using 4 fingers instead of three). My hand cramps easily when I write a lot and I'm slower. In adult life, it doesn't matter, but it did suck as a student when I had to write a lot. Also I could write way less in any literature test, which did result in lower grades.
Same! Plus I’m left-handed, which makes writing just that much worse. I also press down a bit too hard. I suffer so many hand cramps when I try to write. My ex tried to “re-train” me to hold my writing instrument properly, but it never stuck. I feel better than I’m not the only one!
Load More Replies...I've never had anyone tell me I was using chopsticks wrong and I hold the bottom one on my ring finger and the top one with middle and index. If your food isn't flying everywhere, then you're using chopsticks just fine. Same thing with holding a writing utensil. Is your writing legible? Then you're holding the pen just fine.
If you know you’re going to be writing for a while, put the pen/pencil between your first and second fingers, holding with your thumb, first finger on top to guide.
hold the two sticks next to each other parallel like two pencils, so the backs poke out over the top of your hand. rest the bottom one on the tip of your middle finger (flipping the bird finger). use thumb to stabilise bottom one. rock top one on the tip of your index finger and tip of thumb. https://livejapan.com/en/article-a0000335/

Whack it with the knife and twist. Comes right out and doesn’t damage the avocado. Also, slice in the skin then spoon out.
The way to clean the jar - I put a sponge, washing liquid, water in the jar. I mix it and the jar is clean :)
For pitchers/jugs/carafes, white vinegar and (coarse) salt, shake well, wait 5 min, shake again, rinse.
For decanters, cleaning beads (really just ball bearings, tbh), gently swirled around to clean the inside of awkwardly shaped jars, bottles, or decanters. Same idea but with cheap plastic beads can be used for thermos, metal water bottles, cleaning out peanut butter jars.
At 18, a new dentist I started seeing asked how I brush my teeth, side to side or up to down. I replied side to side. He said to brush from crown down to avoid gum damage.
When I was little there were dental techs who came to the school with these really big denture type models and they showed us how to brush our teeth. Wish they still did that.
I used to shave my legs with a bent knee and would always get cuts on my knees until my friend said I should have a straight leg while shaving my knee to prevent cuts and it works like a charm.
Wait...but you do have to bend your knee to shave it. Otherwise the knee will be in wrinkles.
Or if you can afford it, laser it all off. I have very thick dark hair, and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done. I don’t have all those little dark dots where the hair was now, and my legs are so much softer for not shaving them. I could do with a top up but I can’t afford it now, so I’m glad I did it when I had the money.

Load More Replies...Not exactly daily, but if you hate running because it hurts quickly you are probably not running correctly. I don't know if it is also because of malformations or just me being dumb. Try to focus on running your feet touching the ground flat. If you have no clue, try to rotate your feet up or down (slightly) just before you touch group. You will see either it end up hurting you more (over a small time) or... Less.... Fu all those gym teachers at school to never even care.
Getting the right footwear helps as well. Pronation is the natural motion of your foot during walking and running - a friend of mine was having a lot of problems getting comfortable running shoes until one of the assistants in a shop got her to run while they watched and then helped her pick the right footwear.
Wash your face with soap before lathering up to shave. I don't know the science but I believe it strips the oils and allows the facial hair to absorb water. This in turn makes the hair softer and less painful to shave. Just try it.
...or just have a lovely beard, and trim it every few days. Much easier, no ingrown hairs or cuts, or rashes. Plus a bearded face has less bacteria than a shaved one. ...and it looks lovely.
Not an option for military or guys who have to wear a respirator as part of work safety gear.

I was using my dishwasher wrong and you probably are too. - Don't pre-rinse your dishes in the sink (it's not necessary if you use your dishwasher correctly and it wastes water). Scrape off big chunks of food, but you don't need to remove residue. - Do run the hot water in the sink until it's hot before starting the dishwasher - Don't use pods - liquid detergent is better, powdered is best - Do use both the pre-rinse and the main cycle cups (the critical part that most people are doing wrong) - Do use rinse aid
You can save a ton of money if you don't allow the dishwasher to dry your dishes. Just open the door and let them air dry - adds nice moisture to your home too
I live in Louisiana. The last thing I need is more moisture in my house. LOL.
Load More Replies...What's the aim of running the hot water? I live in the UK and every dishwasher I've come across is a cold-fill, but maybe it's different elsewhere?
In the US, it's always been washing with hot water for us. The DW usually taps off the sink hot water supply. Running the sink hot water "flushes" the cold water out of the line, so the DW get hot water immediately.
Load More Replies...Almost all dishwashers only heat for the main wash, so the initial wash just uses line temperature water. If you don't run the water until it it hot they fill with cold water and don't do a very good pre-wash. Running the water until it is hot makes a definite difference.
Load More Replies..."Don't pre-rinse your dishes" presumes you're going to run the dishwasher immediately after loading it, but if the dishes are going to sit in there for a while (e.g. your dishwasher load includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner plates) then yes, rinse them unless you like having to scrub off any dried on residue when you unload it.
If you do not rinse your dishes, you better be cleaning the filters unless you want to buy a new dishwasher every few years. That little rinse also keeps debris from redistributing to the other dishes in a dirty dishwasher.
Big chunks yes, but actually most dishwasher detergents need some levels of grease to make them work effectively. You're getting a worse clean by pre-rinsing.

Toilet paper rolls. I've had the roll on backwards for years
Why people care so much about the position of the toilet paper roll is beyond me. Regardless of how it hangs on your holder, you still use it the same way.

Absolute life hack, this just in, breaking news: keep the roll sitting on a shelf or something to avoid argument.
How to sit up properly. I was low key dipping towards my right butt cheek allll the time and it caused a lot of physical pain.
EDIT: sit up either in a chair with feet on floor or criss cross legs on the floor (maybe put a blanket under your butt for a little cushion). Pull your right cheek out of the way, get the left one so you can find your sits bones underneath you. Rock side to side right to left right to left noticing the spot in the middle. From there rock forward into your public bone and then back into your tailbone, back and forth again noticing that spot in the middle. Start moving your hips in clockwise circles - pubic, right, tail, left a few times....take it counterclockwise. Notice any spots that you feel a little stuck....this is also a nice lower back release.
Find those four points of contact underneath you like prongs in a socket and really plug yourself in, root it down into the ground underneath you and then from that spot in the middle stack one vertebrae on top of the next really getting into the verticality of your spine. When you get to your head lengthen the tip of your nose just a little bit towards the crown of your head. Roll your shoulders up towards your ears a few times and then drop them down so you get out of any scrunching in your shoulders.
Hope that helps!!!! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Haha "sits bones" It's actually really awesome advice that I've also figured out through age necessity. Oddly enough basic human posturing is hard for some people. I thought I could walk properly but every time I step on a treadmill I nearly fall over. In my defense, I have one leg longer than the other. If I don't pay attention and walk real slow I just walk in circles like a sad boat with one oar.
I should share my experience here as a cautionary tale: I managed to pop two of my lower vertebrae by basically sitting wrong for many years. I was weakening them to all hell, and one day, I just sat down, and it felt like someone stabbed me in the back with a knife. This - and a fair bit of other back damage - is irreversible. Since that happened, and for the rest of my life, all I can do is try to manage the pain. It limits me greatly. All because I was sitting stupidly and on the wrong chair for way too long. Learn how to sit.
yep. I always leaned to one side till a doctor pointed out that that is why I had a pain in my side. I thought it was appendicitis. Nope. just sitting funny.
By the time I had done all that, it would be time to stand up again.
I used to read in bed. Suffered bouts of insomnia and I couldn’t figure out why. Read somewhere to only use a bed for…sleeping. Also to keep the bed nicely folded and ready so you want to lay on it when you see it. Now I sleep too much.

Yeah, I'm in the first group, I prefer to read in bed because it makes me sleepy. One chapter, and I can't keep my eyes open anymore. It's kind of nice, because this way I can stretch out a book for a long time (I hate it when I finish a book!). Opening serrated roll dispensers, left handed. Like many things I used to never really care which hand I'd use to hold the box and which hand I'd pull the sheet of plastic wrap or foil with, and a good percentage of the time the wrap would fail to cut properly and tear at off angles and shred. Sometimes it would tear fine. I eventually figured out that some (not all) of these boxes were only sharp in one direction. And if I held the box in my right and pulled the sheet with my left it would tear right every time. (Also, most of these boxes have tabs on the ends which you can push in, to keep the roll from pulling out.)
Those styrofoam cup lids. I was always trying to tear off the little flap. Someone showed me how you flip it back and snap it into that little raised tab.
Using a tin opener, was putting it side on for years which works just not very well
You mean you cut the whole lid off rather than using the lip of the tin as a guide to cut the inside off? What? I mean... that's just asking for massive bleeding.
You can get can openers designed for cutting the whole lid off; you still mount them on the top, but they cut below the lip and are engineered to not leave a razor sharp edge behind, and in my experience they require a lot less effort, result in less mess, and don't leave you with sharp metal disks to deal with!
Load More Replies...it also makes the tin far more dangerous because it leaves this ridiculously sharp edge which some poor trash panda or dog will cut itself upon.
Shredding cooked chicken with my fingers or with forks. It can be unpleasant if the chicken is still hot. Instead, use a Kitchen Aid mixer using the white paddle. It will shred the chicken nicely in 10 seconds.
Yes, because all of us have a $280 stand mixer in our kitchens. /s
Sure do - and after you burn through a hand mixer a year for a few years, you'll realize that 280.00 stand mixer (or more if you do enough to invest in a pro series) is worth its weight in gold. My wife and I gave ourselves a Kitchen Aid pro series 5 for our first Christmas together - it was the only gift we had and 12 years later, it's still used on a very regular basis. Like everything else, it's all about having the right tools for the job. If you hardly ever cook, then this tip is likely totally irrelevant to you anyway.

I am a CrossFit coach and I was coaching for a year or two before I figured out the correct way to use an AbMat. It’s based on the curve of your spine which is greater towards your butt. I had been putting the thicker part of the mat closer to my shoulders, thus squishing it and eliminating it’s benefit of contouring to my back so I could engage my abs and not my lower back when doing sit-ups. It was a simple silly mistake, but is an easy and common one I see many athletes make all the time. Now I tell everyone “the fat end to my fat end” and everyone remembers.

Who in the h*ll (besides this person, apparently) puts a seatbelt on like that??
He was probably used to the old school seat belts. There was a time when they only went across the lap, then the laws changed, so there was a time when you hook the shoulder strap, into the belt strap. A two step process, that a lot of people hated, so they would do, what the OP did.

I always thought I knew how to change a tire. Apparently, you dont have to buy a new rim everytime and can just buy a new rubber and basically explode it into place on the rim with starter fluid and a lighter.
Oh my god DON’T use starter fluid and a lighter to “explode” a tire or ANYTHING on a vehicle! Your life is riding (literally) on your vehicle. Just take it to a professional. It is NOT worth risking your life, your loved ones’/passengers’ lives, AND the lives of other motorists just so you can use a lighter and starter fluid to “explode” a tire rubber onto a rim!
It's not a true explosion. It is a technique that redistributes air pressure in order to seat the tire onto the rim. Learned about this from my father, a mechanic. I def don't recommend trying it without a pro the first few times, but once i got the hang of it, the sound of a seated tire is so satisfying!
