When you see the sheer fame of internet-famous stars like Doug the Pug, Jiff Pom, and Nala Cat, who have millions of followers under their belt, it’s easy to think our furballs are born for the camera, if not for Hollywood, too.
But as soon as you scroll through the camera roll to see the results of a spontaneous shoot you just pulled off, you are left with a cold moment of expectation vs reality. Or worse, some of our beloved pets are the very opposite of photogenic, which makes them resemble unpettable demons, wild chupacabras, and crazed beasts who seem like they played with the Ouija board a little too much.
Bored Panda has compiled a collection full of precisely these photographic cases that show one thing: no matter the photographic ugliness, we still think of our pets as the most beautiful ones, and don’t anyone dare to say otherwise.

While looking at this compilation of not necessarily the most beautiful pics of pets, it’s tempting to blame the animal for not staying still for the camera. After all, posing is a skill and not everyone has it. But what if we look at the non-photogenic pets from a whole different perspective? What if I tell you, it’s the camera man, meaning you, who needs some improvement?
Well, to find out what it takes to make your furball look splendid in pics, Bored Panda reached out to Sydney-based pro pet photographer Keefe Tay, who runs “Furry Munchkins Pet Photography.” When asked what are the most common mistakes that people make when photographing their pets, Keefe said it's that they don’t get down to the same level as their pets.

“The best advice would be to get down low and photograph them at their eye level, it makes them stand out as the subject and allows the viewer to see things from their perspective,” he explained.
Another common faux pas is not trying to make the photo shoot fun for their pets. “Pet photo sessions should be the most fun a dog and/or cat ever has in the week. Whip out the treats, toys, and bring them to their favorite parks/beaches/locations for photos.”

The third mistake is not having the right lightning. “I'm not necessarily talking about getting fancy lighting equipment here. But, for outdoor shots, I recommend not to take photographs of them in harsh direct light! When the sun is directly above the subject on a cloudless day, this will make for very harsh shadows and lighting. Aim to shoot closer to sunset or sunrise when the sun is low in the sky.”

On the other hand, not everyone has time, effort, and all the resources to make a fancy studio setup to shoot their pet. But according to Keefe, “capturing your pet's personality (when they are doing something silly/cute/fun) wherever you are is priceless,” and it doesn’t take a whole lot to have some fun with your furry friend.

Dr. Bronners works really really well. I had a pitty that thought skunks were large ferret friends. He got skunked 3x over the course of a month. I tried everything; commercial skunk odor products, old wives tales recipes... finally I just started dumping everything in the tub on him.

If your dog gets sprayed by a skunk, DO NOT GET HIM OR HER WET. You are not dealing with an odor, you are dealong with an oil stain. Wash the dog down with laundry oil removers. THEN pour dishwashing liquid on them, scrub them THEN hose them down. OR buy a product called Odor Mute. I have been using it for years. The reason you do not wash the dog first is because, as you know, WATER sets an oil stain. Get the oil out first THEN bathe the dog. Then use the Odor Mute. 39 years of dealing with skunks.

Scrubbing your pet with a slurry of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and Dawn dishwashing liquid works, too. The baking soday & peroxide help neutralize the odor and Dawn removes the oil. Be sure to wear disposable gloves & do NOT let the pet in the house before they've been treated. Also, don't wait too long before rinsing as the peroxide can bleach their hair.

My dads dog got skunked once and then led the skunk into the tent when they were camping. In the end they all had to take tomato sauce baths

Nooooo, tomato juice just makes more of a mess. A guy from MIT created this recipe it works great although sometimes you need to use it more than once during a bathing session depending upon how much of the spray got on your dog. Mix together: 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide (available at any pharmacy) 1/4 cup baking soda. 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap. Please do not attempt to bottle this as it will explode

For anybody who's confused, there are two dogs- One dog's head (the one whose body is in the lower right corner) is underneath the other dog's head (the one whose body is in the upper left had corner. To be clear, the dog whose body is in the upper left corner is the one who is wearing the red collar. It took me an unfortunately long time to figure this one out lmao.
