We’re constantly reminded how we’re supposed to love our neighbors and treat others the same way that we’d like to be treated. While that works in theory, the sad fact is that politeness, basic respect, and even common sense are in extremely short supply these days. Unfortunately, some people have run out of all three and substituted them with spite, jealousy, and messiness.

We firmly believe that having good, cheerful, helpful neighbors is a gift from heaven. However, they’re pretty rare in this day and age. To help you value the people you live next to right now more, Bored Panda has collected posts about the very worst things that neighbors have ever done. Nobody should have to live next to these individuals. And we wouldn’t wish them even on our worst enemies.

Scroll down to see just how bad neighborly life can get, and upvote the posts that really got your hearts racing with disappointment and despair, Pandas. If you’d like to vent your anger about the people in your neighborhood, block, or building, feel free to do so in the comment section. There’s nothing like letting off a bit of steam to help you move forward.

Bored Panda spoke about neighborly life, and why we no longer seem to know who our neighbors are with Suzanne Degges-White, Ph.D. She is a Licensed Counselor, Professor, and the Chair at the Department of Counseling and Higher Education at Northern Illinois University. She explained to us what has happened over the past half a century in the United States.

“A lot of things have changed over the last 50-60 years that have created obstacles to getting to know our neighbors,” she told us.

“We are often ‘strangers in a strange land’ when we move into new cities for our jobs,” Professor Degges-White said. Technological developments have also pushed us away from interacting with our neighbors.

“Something that we often don't think about if we're living in a modern home is that up until around 50 years ago, here in the US, air conditioning wasn't common, so people would sit outside on their front porches to stay cool. This ‘front porch sitting’ also led to conversations with neighbors who were strolling by.”

We live in a private community and the cops said they can't stop him we can only complain to the HOA but the guy is renting from friends of ours so we complain and our friends get in trouble not him. 3 more weeks.

There was a somewhat similar story in France. The tenants left a house in disarray with garbage from floor to ceiling. Since it was in a small village, the landlord was able to find their new address, rented 5 trucks and dumped their trash on their front door. It was very public and in the news.

According to the professor, there was a focus on engagement, and folks wanted to “get to know their neighbors.”

“Kids also had a lot of free time that would be spent outside because there was more freedom to run, to be loud, and to engage with other kids in the neighborhood.”

Neighbor Tried To Scare Us Out Of Parking In Our Assigned Spot

Neighbor Tried To Scare Us Out Of Parking In Our Assigned Spot

We recently moved to a new apartment complex, and have out-of-state plates. Another person had been parking in the assigned covered spot we were given. We checked with the office and they said it was the spot for our apartment and the person had probably been parking there since it had been empty for a bit. They said we didn’t have to worry about being towed. I figured it was a person who was the second car in their apartment. My suspicion seems to be confirmed as three weeks later this person hasn’t parked in any other covered spot.

Unfortunately, cats do like to do their business in other people's gardens and people can get very sick of it, I suspect it's that and not just the cats jumping up (though people can be odd). I'd not put these spikes up in a million years (I like cats) but I have had to pick up more than my share of cat poo considering I don't have a cat right now. I do have two dogs and you'd think that would be off-putting but apparently not! Brave or daft, our neighbourhood moggies! Have had a fair number of killed birds as well that I've had to clear up - I'd rather deal with cat poo.

I have had cats for years and have never kept them indoors all the time. I must admit, it does strike me as a little cruel to restrict them like that. Yes, she has had the odd fight with neighbour's cats but the birds are pretty safe. My house is situated between a river on one side and a railway line at the bottom of the garden so there are plenty of rats to keep her busy. I quite often find a dead rat or ( usually about half of) a mouse outside the back door. It's very rare to find a bird, and the odd one I do find is a young chick that's fallen from the nest.

Like any animal, they have their own character. Some are happy living their whole lives indoors, but I've never had one like that yet. They yearn to explore the world, and yes, they are predators. Like I said earlier though, mine prefers to hunt rats, which few people complain about.

This is different than shooting them or poisoning them, though. If cat knows those spikes are up there, it will not jump up there. There's also plenty space to jump next to the plates so the cat can learn to not get up without having to step into those spikes.

Censorshipsucks, just because your cats LIKE to do something doesn't mean they should be allowed to. Children like to eat candy for all meals and play video games instead of learning - that doesn't mean adults should ALLOW it, because adults should know better! You should know what's safest and best practices for your cats and for the humans and wildlife your cats affect. It's not impossible to keep them indoors- cat owners do it all the time. Cats are smart and trainable; if you haven't trained them, fixed them, and controlled both yours and the cats behaviors, it's your own weakness, since clearly it's done by millions of cat owners across the world. Edited to add I have 8 cats, so I do know what I'm saying. They all respond to their names when called, stay off kitchen counters, and don't leave my property.

Crazy-cat-lady here. These things won't do anything if they want to prevent the cats from jumping up. If the cat really loves to be outside but destroys other's property or causes damage, try learning the cat to walk on a leash (might take a while though). There are so many different kind of cats, some hate it outside and some love it. All our cats love to be outside and we have two that behaves outside on their own and we had no complaints, but we have other cats that don't behave and for them we've build a small cat garden in our yard. We've put things like logs and small sandpits in there for them to play in. One prefer to explore more so she gets the leash, she eventually didn't mind it. What I guess I want to say is there's other solutions than these spikes. But in the end, you are responsible for your pet. Try to find a solution which makes both the cat and your neighbor happy. A simple solution is of course to keep your cat inside, but I know cats that love to be outside.

Sorry but not sorry to say this, if your cat has gone into their yard, they have every right to take measures to prevent this. Legally they could put live animal traps in their yard and turn your animals over to animal control if you prefer? I had to erect a 5 food chainlink fence around two acres of property to keep my neighbors animals from continually messing in my yard and dragging other dead animals in my yard. You are utlimately responsible for your pets staying on your property.

I own 8 cats and 100% agree with you! My cats go out on a harness or in my backyard well-supervised 2 at a time so they don't harm any birds or butterflies. I someone else's cat comes into my yard and kills something or causes problems, that cat's owner isn't being a responsible pet owner! I'm well aware that there can be consequences - including legal - if my cats ran loose and I wouldn't take that chance.

You the a-hole for letting your cats poo in their garden.

My neighbour climbed over the fence and stuck metal cats with googly eyes on my fence to deter my cats from jumping across. They hadn’t even visited his garden at that stage. It really put a nasty spin on our relationship right from the start. He then proceeded to put these spikes up all along the fences but at least at that point, I agreed to it, although it ended up being rather unsightly in places. I watched other people’s cats walk past those spikes no problem. A couple of years later, the family got kittens of their own. I’ve had further issues with him about the fences since he always wanted it his way, plus other unpleasant incidents.

I don't think spikes would stop a determined cat but I understand why it was done. A neighbour let two cats roam and my indoor cat ruined our window screens when he saw them through the windows. I complained, it didn't help. Once one of them was sunning on our deck pergola and I couldn't get it to shift. I'd see them ambling across the road every day and worried about them getting run over. Behind our back fences is a green strip that occasionally has coyotes using it as a highway to the river valley. The city is concerned about the Coyotes here and there as they've gone after small pets. I never let our cat out except in a cat harness and leash and he was quite happy just to sniff around the garden. I couldn't figure letting him roam when there was traffic out front and hungry wildlife out back. One of her cats went missing and I wasn't surprised, poor thing. For their sake keep them indoors. Not everyone likes them and they are at risk out there, never mind their bad habits.

My sister and BIL had to do this on their windowsills. A neighbor cat was constantly jumping onto their screen and terrorizing my sister's cats. (The cat being outside and off lease is against the HOA rules.) The spikes aren't sharp, just uncomfortable to land on.

Well, if you were my neighbor, you'd be glad *I* would be starting measures that you should have done before. Because we have dogs and one of them does NOT joke around with cats. Not every dog will actually harm a cat - this one will. Once, he nearly got one because it was stupid (it had been sitting right next to the tree and decided to run right in his direction instead of going up the tree!) and it just got away because it was nimble and I was able to grab the dog before he could really bite. I do NOT want to have an animal killed in our yard, not a bird nor a cat. So whoever moves next to us: be aware that our yard is not cat-safe. (Most of the cats around us know that and we haven't had cat-visits since that day (5 years ago or so))

My neighbour stopped letting their cats out when I told him that I was annoyed that my dog kept rolling in cat pee in my yard. He said he had never considered that (was in his late teens) and never let the cat out again.... hes still a good neighbour

Cat poop and the number of wild animals they kill. Loose dogs aren't acceptable... loose cats shouldn't be either.

Mine did too - it made 0 difference. We’re figuring something out to keep the, in our garden, though - I get it’s annoying when they poo in your garden. And they love birdwatching, which doesn’t go well with kitties.

I read that lavender plants can be used as a deterrent. I like cats, but I hate them killing the wildlife.

They seem very ineffective. I've had a lot of cats throughout my life and they wouldn't be put off by something like this, this wouldn't even slow them down let alone stop them.

I can understand it. I spent $$$ on getting my gardens planted & the neighborhood cats treated them like a big litter box. I tried everything to keep them away. Finally figured out that I could hit them with a blast of vinegar from my Super Soaker, but that still took a while. In the meantime I was out hundreds of dollars.

Dangerous items. Could fall on a kid's head. Big time liability. Just warning the neighbor.

We had cats who liked to toilet in my neighbor's back yard. We spent a lot of $$ making the back yard unescapable. It can be done, but it's a lot of work and expense. Still, worth it to keep on neighbor's good side.

this is awful! If the cat doesn't know the spikes are there, the kitty could get seriously scratched up!

Cover it with spray foam in the shape of cats. Also get insurance for your cats.

That's just downright cruel! People need to keep their cats indoors. Indoor cats are safer and can adjust to indoor living.

Don’t let your cats wander around unsupervised. They are responsible for some species being endangered. They can also get in fights, get run over by cars, etc. I have an acquaintance that walks her cats on a leash. Again, I’m not saying don’t let your cats out. I’m saying don’t let them run around unsupervised

I love cats and while I find those spikes to be a cruel (albeit completely ineffective) installation, I doubt they came out of the blue with no prior discussion. I'll bet the neighbor was fed up of the cats pooping in their yard, hunting birds from feeders, and/or damaging ornamental plants, and tried to resolve it diplomatically without success. The cat owner probably deflected all the complaints with something like "what do you want me to do? They're cats!" The spikes are really just a way to say "f**k you" to the neighbor for allowing their miniature lions to cause unchecked destruction.

Ummmm....is the cat blind or something? My cats would jump up and nap next to the spikes...since they only cover like a fraction of the top of the fence.

Honestly, this isn't that bad. You can buy these 'spikes' at your local Home Depot, or even Wal-mart. They're a humane way to keep cats and birds from landing places, as they won't jump onto something that is uneven. Truth be known, depending on how much a problem it is causing, the Neighbor could even go so far as to call Animal Control out and have the cats physically removed from the property, and the cat owner fined for any damage the cats cause.

Honestly, these aren't the worst things they could do. If anything these 'spikes' aren't going to hurt the animal. I mean seriously, you can buy them at most local big box hadware stores, and even Wal-Mart. The general idea for them being that a cat won't jump onto something where it isn't certain if it's perfectly flat. The 'spikes' deter that. As to worse things they can do, if the cats encroach on the neighbors yard, then the neighbor could contact the cat's owner and tell them to restrict their cat's actions; and if it happens again, contact Animal Control to come pick up the cats.

There's nothing wrong with this. I like cats. I have three, but I would completely understand someone not wanting my cats in their yard. This doesn't actually hurt the cats, it just prevents them from jumping up there, though tbh their spike-line looks incomplete. As soon as a cat tries to jump up, he'll jump down and learn not to do it again.

A cat would look at this and think "How nice, someone added an obstacle course. Now, I can get more exercise." This wouldn't deter my cat from fence sitting.

Keep your cats inside! I wouldn't want ur stupid cats scaring off my birds and crapping in my yard. YOU are the jerk neighbor in this scenario. (Won't harm ur cats, they'll just learn to leave ur neighbor alone and bother all ur other neighbors.) I have a cat and I keep him inside.

Do they not think the cats can step over them? They’re just going to learn to jump somewhere else and walk around them. But I’d just keep taking them down anyway

(a) I'd send a vet bill to the person who did this. (b) lol you do not understand cats, I've seen them hop through cacti with no harm done. Super agile. (c) it's fertiliser for your plants, get over yourself.
