Globally, the average height for men is 5’9” or 175 cm

As children, many of us hope to grow up and tower over our parents because it seems like that’s just what happens when you’re an adult. You grow up, and you literally grow upwards. But in reality, a lot of us reach our peak height between 15 to 18, and it’s likely that we’ll be a happy medium between each of our parents’ heights. Globally, the average height for men is 5’9” (or about 175 cm), and women tend to reach about 5’4” (or about 162 cm).

But of course, heights differ from country to country as well. Dr. Yuksel Yurttas reports that in Estonia, for example, the average man is about 6’ or 183 cm tall. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, men reach an average of 5’5” or 165 cm. But how many people in the world tower over the rest of us, at 7’ or taller? It’s estimated that there are approximately 2,800 people in the world who are taller than 7’, so there’s no question that Beau Brown is a rarity.

We reached out to Beau via email to hear what it’s really like to be so tall, and lucky for us, he was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda. First, we wanted to know what inspired Beau to start posting videos online about his experience as a 7’1″ man. “It’s the type of content that nobody else can copy,” he shared. “I also noticed when I would randomly post something about my perspective, everybody said, ‘I wish I could be in your shoes,’ and the idea hit me that maybe I could put people in my shoes with a camera and hopefully spread some joy.”

“I started getting so many messages saying my videos were helping people embrace their different bodies and look at them in a different way, and that was everything to me”

“Some of the reactions I get are truly unique, and I figured people would enjoy that,” Beau continued. “It was also a great way to help me cope with my (at the time) crippling social anxiety. I still deal with it today, but it’s so much better because of these videos and seeing how happy my videos make people. I started getting so many messages saying my videos were helping people embrace their different bodies and look at them in a different way, and that was everything to me because I struggled with it for so long.”

When it comes to the best parts of being tall, Beau says one perk is being able to meet new people. “It’s a natural networking tool on steroids,” he told Bored Panda. “I generally stand out wherever I am and immediately get attention, so sometimes I can use it to my advantage when looking for an opportunity in a room with important people. It’s also just so fun interacting with different people everyday and hearing other people’s stories.”

But it’s not all sunshine and roses. Beau says the worst part of being tall can be summed up in one word: travel. “Traveling is an actual horrible thing,” he said with a laugh. “I don’t fit on train seats, I don’t fit in plane seats, I don’t fit in most cars for long road trips. If I’m flying, I usually always have to pay $50 to $100 extra just to get a seat that I’ll fit in. Or I have to go to the gate before the plane boards and bag the flight attendant to give me an exit row.”

“I truly am living my dream right now”

“It’s been pretty stressful in some situations because everybody stares at me while I’m trying to sit in a seat that I don’t fit into,” Beau continued. “There have been times where there’s been 20 minute delays just because of me and trying to find a place where I can fit. Although, one time it was pretty nice because I got upgraded to first class for free just because I couldn’t fit anywhere,” he said with a laugh. “Some of the passengers didn’t like that, but I definitely did.”

We also asked Beau what he wants smaller people to understand about his height. “Just because you’re tall doesn’t mean you have to stick to the societal norms,” he shared. “I was never in the right place at the right time, even though I played D1 college basketball. So I never got the NBA scout looks. 99% of the people I meet basically say I better be in the NBA, or I’m a waste of height.”

“Even though I would love to be in the NBA, because I love basketball and I’m pretty good at it, I think what I do still spreads a lot of joy, and I make a great living doing something that would be considered a dream job,” Beau explained. “It took 10 years of me making these videos and working multiple jobs to get to the point where I could do this full time comfortably. It was worth the grind because I truly am living my dream right now.”

I don't know what 7'11'' is in cm, but I have a good friend who's 2.02m tall and his height really is something. Especially with doors because he's just slightly taller than the usual door, so sometimes when he's around, you just hear a "Thudd" sound followed by cursing. And his husband, a pretty short guy, is so ridiculously tiny compared to him. However, I am jealous of how much he can eat without getting fatter. I wish I had that!

I remember last century…I was in the waiting area at Bangkok Airport and there was a very tall guy; I'm 6'2" and he towered over me! When I got closer I could see that he had a T-shirt on with "Don't ask, I'm 7'6"…" on the front and "…yes ladies, it is all in proportion" on the back.
