Well I remember savage beatings at the hands of my parents and siblings but now that I’m an adult everyone denies it they say it never happened and I feel my mind slowly slipping away, I think I’m crazy.
Gaslighting. I feel for this person. My friend has undeniable evidence of mistreatment, is trying currently to face their family, and bring met with flat denial. It is horrible.
That I got my job as charity and therapy. I came back from a combat tour a total wreck. I stayed at my uncle's home for a month and I was already drinking too much and couldn't sleep without nightmares, the kind where you wake the house up from yelling and punching air. My uncle owned 4 restaurants and soon had me working in two of his kitchens 70 hours a week. I threw myself into the work because I had no social life; in six months, I was kitchen manager at his busy 24/7 restaurant. I did an excellent job but unc paid me 50% over the local scale. I think he hired me initially just to keep me out of trouble.
I once started a small bar in the city. We were doing really well. Then in a matter of months I got absolutely distroyed by the police. Every day they were there looking for the smallest infrigment of any code. If some one was smoking less then 6 meters from my door I would hear about it. If some one had an open beer within a mile, i would hear about it. We were constantly told to keep the live music down even though there are literally no residential neighbours, NONE. Eventually we closed down.
Within a few weeks of this happening I realized that the other people that owned a bar near by had had a serious decrease in sales since we opened and since they had been a long time contributor to the local political scene I think they got the cops to shut us down.
No proof. Just a hunch.

You are correct. My cousins husband was in the the CIA and he can’t say much but what he would tell me is: for every one we know about them stopping, there were at least 10 we don’t know about. So we know of about 1/10 of the attempts at terrorism. He also said, he knows the stuff we don’t want to know about. He promised we’d know more upon his death.
So I worked at a certain venue for a while, and the owners liked me, so they kept me around despite me being a slow learner on the job (waitstaff).
The venue got brought a few months ago, and the new owners have a totally different vision for it. Some of the old staff stuck around, including myself, but many left.
I strongly suspect that I was given a job at the new venue as a request of the old owners. I don't fit the mould of the people they hire at all, and I really got the impression that they weren't sure what to do with me at the start.
I may never know, but I'm pretty thankful to the old owners regardless.
Astronomer here! I very strongly suspect there is life beyond Earth in the universe, and there’s a good chance it exists elsewhere even in our solar system. I can’t prove it however, but would be astounded if it wasn’t the case- life is just a chemical process when you get down to it, so why would that process be so unique as to happen only once when we see all the ones we can measure repeat all over?
I also suspect though it will be nowhere near as exciting as most people think it will be, due to Hollywood films. Rather, it will be like finding water on Mars- speculating it’s there, finding the first evidence that it may have existed at one point, and after a ton of intermediate steps concluding there is definitely water on Mars. First we will probably find a chemical signature from an exoplanet that may be from life or have another explanation, then something more solid, and then with all the steps on the way after years a conclusion that life exists elsewhere in the universe. Not very Hollywood, but very in line with how science works!
I just remember someone saying that if Earth was the only life in the entire Universe, what an incredible waste of space it would be.
I seriously suspect that people get more reckless and angry when the weather is hotter. I just can't find a way to prove it without being Mr Burns and blocking out the sun.
This is absolutely true. Good weather brings more assholes out onto the streets or public areas. They never come out when it rains. This is why I always hate sunny weather and love rain
I know I'm in the minority but I absolutely hate hot, sunny weather. I love the rain. I love gray skies. I love cool temperatures. I think Seattle has great weather. I don't even like mildly warm weather. If it's over 70⁰ F, I don't want to be out. What most people consider "good weather," I consider terrible weather. I want to live somewhere that is never (ideally) hotter than the 60s, has gray, overcast skies all the time. I don't want to see the sun. I would fast forward straight to October, if I could.

This is actual and factual. I work in a hospital and things get nuts here during heatwaves.
Can totally relate to this. I'm Jamaican and used to teach at a high school. As the summer months approached each year, disagreements and fights among students would start to increase, and would worsen towards the end of the school year. The heat just messes with the psyche; it's no joke! There's a valid reason why schools go on holiday during the summer.
So true. Come July, there's a massive shift in my patience level. I don't necessarily become mean, just excessively cranky. I don't feel like myself until the temp drops to consistent and humane levels.
when the temperature goes out of the comfortable range, it puts you under a bit of stress, which takes away some of your mental capacity, as you tend to focus on the signals your body is constantly sending you. I can feel that on the really warm days where my head just stops functioning, and I can't consentrate so everything runs a bit slower. When we get stressed or worn down, the capacity for the advanced level of thinking required to be empathatic goes down, and we begin acting more animal like and instinctive as the fuse gets shorter.
I remember a few decades ago that TV and movies constantly made mention of increasing violence during heat waves. I guess it went out of style to talk about it and now here we are with someone claiming that it's a theory he has that no one might have heard of.
I absolutely do get more short tempered when I'm overheated. Been noticing it for years.
In hot weather, violent crime goes up. In cold weather it goes down. These statistics are available from law enforcement in big cities.
Murder rates definitely go up! People snap in the relentless heat and humidity.

I hated living in FL for just this reason. You do acclimate a little but never enough for me. Now as temperatures hear in the north seem to be rising more in the summer, I don't even want to go out. My sweat actually stings sometimes plus it pours down from my head. If I'm leaning over it pools in my glasses. Who doesn't get irritated and unreasonable in the heat?
Right? We lived in San Diego and the number of people taken to the ER with "extreme sunburn" was staggering. Um - Grannie's having a heart attack, but by all means you rich stupid f*ck, please throw a temper tantrum to get you 5 y/o with a SUNBURN to the front of the line. FYI - it didn't work. And Grannie turned out just fine. The Dad & the kid are probably still entitled assh&les, though.
The Santa Ana winda in LA can be linked to an increase in violent crimes such as assaults. They are hot, and people lose their temper. I also was discussing this fact with a floor manager in a poker room. They keep the room extra cool. People tend to get heated when playing poker, so they keep it cool to reduce the amount of fights.
I 100% get crankier when it's hot. I also get kind of stupider? So cranky and stupid is a bad combo. I definitely support blocking out the sun.
I know I'm angrier the hotter it gets. Then again anything above 65° F is too hot to me. The rain doesn't effect my mood negatively, or the cold. But the heat? Ugh
Both are true. There is more crime in nice weather because more people are outside of their homes AND the hotter it gets, to the point of discomfort & beyond, the more people get irritable\angry, the more violent crime there is. This has been studied both in local areas over different times a year and in geographical terms where the farther south you go in the summer, the more violent crime there is.
I live in the pilbara where it stays over 40C for months at a time. No one has the energy to be reckless or angry.

They also get louder. I'm in North Sweden and at this time of the year it's daylight 20 hours out of the day and the remaining 4 hours it's a little darker but not completely dark which means that kids are out screaming for 14 - 16 hours a day, especially weekends and evenings after school. Adults in my neighbourhood are blasting loud bass music almost all the time and it's awful. I'm very light and sound sensitive and the next 4 months are hell. Much prefer the fall and winter when it's dark 20 hours a day and so cold no one is out.
This explains why the Scandinavian countries are always on the top of those Happiest places lists. And, then we have Florida Man.
Maybe people are more grateful for the simple things (like warmth and light) when they're used to experiencing cold and dimmer light?

Perhaps, we just aren't used to heat in the northern hemisphere. I noticed too that on hot days people tend to act weird. I wonder if folks in, say, Brazil react the same way to unusually cold weather?
I live next to a pub (with beer garden) also opposite a police station, so I can 100% confirm the sun turns people into dickheads! I heard one guy crying and shouting at police because the cuffs on his ankle were too tight… it was his sock!

Public Schools purposely don't teach finance to most of their students. If they did, very few would agree to the conditions of their student loan notes, which would lead to a decline in college matriculation and in general make the school look bad.
Retired business teacher, high school here. Do you know how many times I tried to teach budgeting, or savings accounts for future needs, 401K's, interest rates, credit cards........? Most of the time it was met with "I don't need those things till I'm old." I tried to relate how they would need all these things the minute they walk out of their childhood home. "Daddy will help me if I need it." Yes, it was an affluent section of Connecticut. Even the parents say they don't need to know this right now. WHEN??????????!!!!!!!!!! If you are at a crazy party, people tend to do tequila shots. SO, you assume that tequila shots make you crazy. If you got in a fight with someone while drunk on gin, you will associate gin with anger. Same goes for the rest of them.
Yeah this has been studied and is correct. Alcohol depresses higher brain function, so your brain stops inhibiting your emotions. Therefore alcohol acts as an emotional amplifier, it doesn't give you the emotion to start with. Probably a confusion of cause and effect - sad people drink "sad" drinks, get sadder &c

Of course they are. You can’t go to school for 7 hrs a day, practice for 3hrs and then also have time for study on top of that?! That said, what you learn in class (without homework and study) should be enough to give you a passing grade anyway, just not an honours one.

well in the states, universities are businesses, so obviously they want as many customers as possible, so it depends on how many applicants they get vs how many places they have. If they have fewer applicants than places, yes, they will accept anyone.

I’m sure my ex-stepdad made a half-assed attempt to kill me when I was thirteen. We never liked each other. One day he asked for help looking at something in my mom’s car, a little Toyota Corona wagon. It was parked on an angled driveway. He asked me to stand behind it and keep it from rolling back while he checked something on the brakes, and then he released the parking brake and put it in neutral. It took everything I had to keep the car from rolling over me, and I was screaming at him to put the brakes back on. He was yelling back that I just needed to hold it a little longer. I think he came to his senses when I started to slip, and he put the car back in gear and pulled the parking brake. Then he chastised me for being too weak to hold “such a little car” back and walked away.

I have a sweet story where I'm 100% sure of something, but will never be able to corroborate it. When I was a small child, I gathered & planted a bunch of seeds/weeds/twigs/etc in the hope of growing something. I watered the area morning & night for several days until I woke up one day to find a beautiful flower "sprouting" from my little dirt pile. Even at 6yrs old, I knew a flower can't grow 6" and fully bloom overnight, but my Dad will never admit to putting it there & will surely take his "secret" to the grave, lol. All to make me feel special — best Dad ever! ❤

When I was a small child, I gathered & planted a bunch of seeds/weeds/twigs/etc in the hope of growing something. I watered the area morning & night for several days until I woke up one day to find a beautiful flower "sprouting" from my little dirt pile. Even at 6yrs old, I knew a flower can't grow 6" and fully bloom overnight, but my Dad will never admit to putting it there & will surely take his "secret" to the grave, lol. All to make me feel special — best Dad ever! ❤
This is going to sound so farfetched and I promise I'm actually a smart and logical person, but I personally think dragons used to exist for real and possibly still could. I mean, I feel like coming up with that sort of thing is hard to do and there were creatures similar to them. Idk, maybe I just love dragons a lot, but I really do think they were real at some point (and maybe still are).
