“Excuse me, sir or madam. Are you satisfied with your current internet provider? Allow me to introduce you to another one that you’ll be sick of within a year, if you don’t shut the door in my face first!”
The world of business is a brutal one. If you don’t have an excellent idea and a way to execute it without running out of funds, your brand is toast. Yet somehow, despite all odds, there are companies out there who continue to roam the earth like cockroaches, seemingly impossible to destroy.
Reddit users have recently been discussing these confusingly successful companies and business models, so we’ve gathered some of their thoughts below. Enjoy reading through, and be sure to upvote the businesses you’re shocked are still around too!

The Kardashians
Why are they even famous?? Stop mentioning their names and they'll die out
A new phase of our society - being famous for being famous - no talent required.
The most confusing weirdassshit success ever ! note: never seen 1 minute ?
wish they stop polluting medias with their useless and tasteless presence
F**k Ticketmaster
Agree. However, until this monopoly is busted up in the USA, it will remain THE ticket provider. The way their contracts work with all the major arenas, any concert held in one must go through ticketmaster.
Didn't Ticketmaster testify before Congress (back when we had a Congress)?
Load More Replies...I refuse to pay that much more for over priced events, staying home and enjoying myself !
You mean Ticketbastard? I mean, that's what we called it 20 years ago.
Ticketmaster is why I don't go to most concerts. I'm not paying a 50% to 100% fee for processing. I'm just a hop and a skip from Tampa, so I get to see a lot of smaller shows that are more intimate. I got to see the Misfits with Danzig not too long ago, and it was through Groupon.
I totally agree - and I know I'm with a lot of people when I say I loathe TicketMonster, or TicketBastard, whatever you want to call it (I've heard it called terms that would get censored on BP). I won't go to any event that sells tickets only through this evil outfit.
Nestle - with all the negative press about the terrible things they've done, surprised anyone still buys their products.
That is true. I avoid buying anything Nestle because of all the s**t they do, but I know that is not really possible, because they likely own other brands I'm not even aware of.
Load More Replies...Still in business? It’s the largest food & bev brand in the world w/ a valuation of over 20 billion dollars.
Industrial farming is supported by child slave labor, every single clothing brand is built off of outsourced slave labor. Fenty, marc jacobs, tommy hilfiger, Nautica, Armani to name a few, are made in ROMANIA (among other cheap places) Workers are paid $3 an hour, the cost of materials that goes into an item is literal PENNIES, and the same material is used to make items that cost $20 and the items that cost $1000+ Absolutely everything you buy, and everything that YOU do is built on, or causes suffering and widespread destruction. And absolutely everyone knows this, even if they've deluded themselves into believing their own personal convenience and gratification somehow justifies their actions. Nestle is playing the game a larger scale, but it's exactly the same level of terrible as the average individual.
It’s because people just say they will never buy their products again, just like all the people that say they will never use Amazon again. Both may be actively evil…but they are convenient.
Nestle is one of the hardest brands to boycott because they OWN ALMOST EVERYTHING. They are one of the largest food brands in the world. Plus, many other their products go by different names in other countries which makes it even more difficult. Nestle-653...nsored.jpg
I avoid Nestlevil as much as possible. You can find lists of what this evil empire owns on-line.
Nestle is a HUGE company and markets worldwide. There are few people who can tell them what to do.
We reached out to the person who started this conversation in the first place, Reddit user Square-Floor8879, and they were kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda.
As far as what inspired them to pose the question, "What company has you shocked that they have not yet gone out of business?" the OP says it was just one of those questions they're always curious about. "I pass by so many businesses that I have seen since I was a child, and I wonder between the changes throughout my lifetime and COVID how these places survived and why," they shared.
McAfee
My god. My mom installed mcafee safe family onto my pc, the virus protection wore out and it made my computers slow as c**p, and every day I get about 5 different pop ups asking to renew it.
EXACTLY, my computer came with it installed, why do they have to remind me constantly!

Wells Fargo, why anyone would still trust them with their money baffles me.
Where to even begin with Wells Fargo? At least you'll be robbed sans the shotgun and cowboy costume...
Isn’t it an American bank? Probably can’t count on being sans-shotgun haha (not trying to be rude, genuine question: aren’t average Americans allowed to walk around carrying massive assault weapons with very little regulation?)
Load More Replies...I've posted this story before, but briefly, WF bought our mortgage in 2007, doubled our mortgage payment, and foreclosed on our home, within like 6 months of our HUD mortgage becoming available for purchase. A year later, the store I was working in did business at the local WF, so I was forced to go in and interact nicely with the staff every day. After weeks of my favorite teller politely pestering me to move my personal banking to them, I finally bluntly told her, "Your company stole my house. You're very nice, but your company will never get a penny from me."
Hardly a week goes by that you don't read about them being penalized in the millions for something they did.
I used to work for a well known local bank, moved up in the company pretty well, till things started to stall out. I went back to school, switched careers and quit. A year later all my former coworkers (and Dad and stepmom) were laid off when Wells Fargo bought the bank. So glad I listened to my gut and left before then.
Horrible non-customer service corrupt company!! Profits Before People!!
I haven't had any problems with them, other than it's difficult sometimes to find an ATM...
I had an account with Wells Fargo for many years, and closed it in 2018. I still have an account with Bilk of America, tho. Fortunately, I am with a credit union, and someday hope to put all of my bank moolah in it.
Herbalife
Like Amway....seems totally unnecessary with the Internet. I remember their HQ office buildng at the I405 & Century near LAX-went away many years ago-the building now put giant billboards advertising pay cable channel shows.
My friends mom used to be in a weight loss gummies pyramid scheme, my friend ate them from her jar and got no problems because they were probably just normal gummies
I don't like that things like this still exist, but I understand why. It's people wanting quick fixes to their ailments, or easy ways to fix something they are insecure about, so these companies capitalize on that by claiming to have some magic potion, basically, that will help with [insert ailments or physical "defects" here]. I don't know if they are still going, but at one point people were selling "miracle mineral spirits", which were just the mineral spirits used as paint thinner or stripper, or sometimes even just bleach. It's kinda terrible that people do that stuff.
There are a few companies that Square-Floor8879 is surprised are still around as well. "Amazon and online shopping have completely taken over society, so any department store that doesn't differentiate itself from online shopping has me surprised it is still around," the OP told Bored Panda. "Macys or JC Penney type [stores]."
Every single cryptocurrency related company
Someone once was explaining to me how the cryptocurrency market was changing. I had no idea what they were talking about but it came off a bit coin descending
I thought about getting into cryptocurrency, and am glad that I didn't jump right in!
I got in at $1000 and had someone ask me what to do with some money he came into and I said "Bitcoin" - it was at $2200 at the time and he didn't listen... ngl, it takes time to accept "Hey, I am down $10,000 in the last hour", but once you stop staring at it there is the profit.

That furniture store that has had the "going out of business" sale going on for the last 4 years.
There was a place like this in my hometown that had a clearance sale because it was going out of business (opheffingsuitverkoop in Dutch) for over 25 years. I was shocked to find out it finally closed for good about six months ago.
We had a rug store which was going out of business for 20 years

On a Wednesday at around 2 pm, I received a tap at my door from an elderly woman who wanted to show me a Kirby hoover.
Additionally, it appears that door-to-door salespeople will still exist in 2023.
Yeah, but expensive. Worked for them briefly years ago
Load More Replies...Shows just how well a brand has made its way into a term. Hoover is a Company as is Kirby. Just that Hoover is now what we generally call a vacuum cleaner.
i have never in my life called a vacuum a hoover lol.
Load More Replies...Yeah, I just had a guy at my door a week ago asking if I was interested in solar panels.
Load More Replies...Same as several others here - I worked selling Kirby's back in the early '90's - left after two weeks due to the shady practices of the "franchisee" that I worked for. That said, my mum loved her Kirby's, and I still have the last one she bought back in 1995, and it is still working perfectly. Sadly, I don't use it anymore, as it is too heavy to carry up and down stairs.
My folks bought one from their door to doo sales people, I think we sold it at a garage sale. Decent yet noisy vacuum for an upright, heavy duty made of steel not plastic, seems to me they mostly sell to commercial markets like hotels and convention centers and such, I've seen a few stores..wonder if it's still owned by Scott & Fetzer Co.
We were also curious what the OP believes is keeping these companies afloat. "It has to be a combination of loyal customers, reinventing themselves and maybe a financial strategy or aid that was provided either during COVID or otherwise," they noted.
Every Psychic shop I’ve ever driven by.
They already know who's gonna arrive and when so they plan accordingly
But, how else would I know if Venus is in retrograde so I can blame all my bad choices and poor behaviour on the stars being out alignment?
The Amazing Randi was a stage magician who dedicated most of his professional life to exposing psychics. He held a million dollars in trust for any psychic that could prove their abilities. No one was ever able to do so.
All those awful kiosks in malls that sell stuff no one honestly needs
I'm starting to think that malls themselves are just fronts for money laundering. Who the hell needs Lenscrafters, knockoff "Oriental" furniture, Persion rugs, a phone case that says "It's Wine O'clock," and a churro? And if you do, I know just the place...lol
Wellll...I wouldn't say no to a churro right about now.
Load More Replies...At the rate Malls are closing, I think the Kiosks will be just a memory soon.
I might be the one-off here but before, years ago, when I bought Christmas stuff, it was the best place to do everything in one shot. It was mostly arts and crafts as gifts. I also bought my first set of stamps (stamping with ink) there and a few things that you can't find elsewhere. I don't care about knockoffs and that kind of things, I'm more into crafty things.
Invicta watches is the perfect example... most of their stuff is so ugly.
Yup but I guess it's a way to start your own biz, but I'll bet you have to sacrifice a lot to be 'successful'. I'm sure the kiosk rental from the mall owner is not that cheap.
actually, my mother got scammed by one of those people. we were buying phonecases. it was some guy who kept telling her “i give you a special discount” and this “discount” was from 60$ to 30$. it was ridiculous, but my mother is a bit of a pushover and doesn’t know how to say no. so she bought them. it was ridiculous. i can’t believe these shady people can get away with this stuff💀
That's why they're in kiosks. If they were in a store, no one would ever go in.
classmates.com still trying to charge what you can get for free on Facebook
One of your classmates remembered you! Please click on this link! (We totally aren't going to steal your information for marketing purposes!)
I have out lived most of the people I went to school with and I am holding out to be the last one. There Can Only Be One.
Just before Facebook exploded Classmates.com was the place to get reacquainted. But they wanted to charge a monthly fee and that doomed them. I think they could have been huge if they made it free like Facebook did
Square-Floor9979 also said they loved reading through the responses to their post. "It was exactly what I wanted," they noted. But some replies were unexpected. "I'm not sure why people are surprised by chain restaurants. In this economy especially, cheap and quick options will always appeal to people."
Finally, the OP added that they loved how involved their post became. "Every time I checked, there was so much to read and try to keep up with. A cool experience for sure!"
I hope they don't but Arizona Ice Tea has cost the same my whole life. Good on them.
There are three reasons that Arizona Iced Tea has remained at 99c. 1). Production. They use about 1/2 the aluminum of regular cans, and their production facilities run at twice the rate of other companies. 2). They ship their product late at night, to avoid traffic jams, and slow downs, and their trucks are also lighter, equaling less fuel consumption. 3). No advertising campaigns, or celebrities endorsement. They rely on word of mouth, and product placement in gas stations, and other stores.
OMG yes I wasn't afraid of the inflation until I walked into the store and saw $1.25 on the can.....
I have heard of them before. That brand is present in Poland, albait barely. No ads, no commercials, basically almost no one knows such a brand exists. Only place you can buy a can of Arizona are "Action" shops.
The "no ads, no commercials" is on purpose. A big part of their business model is that advertising is the majority cost for most beverage companies (really, the cost of production and distribution is tiny comparatively), so they don't do that and sell their products far cheaper.
Load More Replies...I can get them here in Scotland for about £2.50 for the giant cans, iced tea isn't massively popular but I really like it so buy it quite a lot when I see it
My daughter purchased two cans just yesterday. They still cost $.99 here!
Burlington. Place is basically Goodwill with clothes people haven't worn yet.
Burlington... along with other stores like Ross or Marshalls are called off price market. What that means is any product that couldn't be sold to any traditional retailers from Wal-Mart on up get off loaded to these stores. It's kinda a last stop for clothing. I only know this because I work in clothing manufacturing and Burlington is one of our customers!
Also stuff that the big retailers had but couldn't sell off
Load More Replies...Burlington and places like it provide quality, if often slightly irregular, clothing to folks who otherwise may not be able to afford quality. I think it's a wonderful business model, and I hope they continue to succeed. Although, it definitely is often cluttered in those places!
I got a really nice coat from a Burlington Coat Factory back when it was still called Burlington Coat Factory. I still have that coat as I only wear it for dress up occasions. It’s a good coat. Deep red, fine polished cotton, satin lining, interior pockets. Almost knee length. I’ve never had a problem with Burlington.
There's one near me and it's always packed even with a Marshalls and a TJ Maxx in the same shopping center.
They are putting in two new ones in my area, both will be next to a Ross and TJ Maxx.
Load More Replies...My mother and I often go to Winners or HomeSense, which are similar stores, for certain items. Sometimes you can find really good deals on quality stuff. I got my Kyu knives pretty cheap there. And they last and last and last. Rarely need sharpening. I feel like people who don't like these places are people who are offended by people getting those items cheaper.
Burlington in the 1980s was a top notch store (I worked for them one christmas season). This is when they were mostly coats. And nice coats at that. Had a fake fur that looked real and I was surprised to find it wasn't. But you go into a Burlington today and your right it looks like a goodwill. Sears looked better than them the last time I went in. I was shocked by how bad their product looked. Not worth their prices because it's all c**p now.
So Dollar General and Family Dollar and 99c Only are the same only it's EVERYTHING that didn't sell not just clothes. I remember seeing Madonna's (ex) pricey metal book 'Sex' on an end bin at 99c Only and it was like $12 (I think originally it was like $300)
I will never forget the dog fur trimmed parka fiasco at Burlington... I believe they changed it from Burlington Coat Factory after that.
I'm hoping I read that wrong and you meant fur trimmed parkas FOR dogs.

The Chinese buffet across the parking lot from the coffee shop where I work. My boss saw them defrosting fish fillets on the roof of a car once. Directly on the car. I don’t know how many times we’ve had to call the health department on them.
They leave the dumpsters looking like a war crime, too
Yeah, this sounds questionable. They didn't see it, but their boss allegedly did.
Edible Arrangements. I'm convinced this company survives on one time orders that are for the hell of it, not actual repeat customers.
in the city where my mom lives, it's the best fruit I've ever eaten. Don't know how they do it.
Load More Replies...There is one near me that uses fresh fruits. Its up to each location to get their produce. The one that delivers to my work is like rubber
my coffee shop was contacted by a company asking if I would contract to fulfill edible arrangement orders. As in, I would store fruit, and put together the arrangements to be picked up, and I guess, get a small cut?? I don't think they're doing well...
Here in Southern California they’ve dropped the “Edible” and the storefront says just “Arrangements.” Were they bought out by someone? Did they reorganize after bankruptcy? Did someone else have the same name and won the lawsuit? Hm-m-m …
My guess is that "edible" has had a shift in meaning over the past few years; more often than not edibles no longer refer to the general class of "things that can be eaten" and instead means "things that can be eaten *and contain drugs*".

AOL

I still use my aol email from a quarter century ago. I'm adjusted to it and I'd have to change so many things at this point.
Well you probably do need to change a few things. Your Depends for starters.
Load More Replies...Yep. They altered their business as times changed, and are still thriving. I don't understand the complaint.
Don't know why everybody thinks having aol is sobad. We're the original . Embraced technology first. And didn't chase trends .
That number seems suspect, considering Verizon sold AOL and yahoo to Apollo Capital for $5 billion in 2021.
Kohls. Don't get me wrong, I love my Kohl's. But everytime I go in there it feels like 90% of the shoppers there are just there to return their Amazon package. Kohls does have some pretty good stuff so I do hope they stay in business (mostly because they are just so convenient for returns.
One of my friend's son works at Kohls. He says this is one of the reasons he likes it. It's an easy retail job, barely any interaction with customers, and most of those are usually there to return Amazon purchases. The only drawback being he is almost 100% certain that one day he's going to show up for work & the store will be shuttered and abandoned.
Actually, it will turn into a Spirit Halloween.
Load More Replies...They're putting Sephora inside Kohl's store in Southeast, US. I'm sure it's happening elsewhere in the US as well.
Yes, I noticed this at my local Kohl's in Washington state
Load More Replies...Kohls no longer has a lot of clothes for men post-COVID, nor good deals like they used to.
That for the most part is my last chance and I found what was looking for store...sadly a lot of them seem to be closed and gone.
Kohl's used to be my go-to place for sweaters and casual tops. I went there last week - never again. They've changed their pricing and the quality of the goods is terrible. I expected prices to go up, but I didn't expect the cheesiness of the sweaters and tops. So disappointed.
My bad. I thought Kohls was some sort of eyeliner or mascara or something. I guess not.
Macy’s
One of my favorite stores but it gets pretty depressing to shop there. You see maybe like 2 employees on the entire floor. Products are often never organized and the fitting rooms are even worse. Clothes just dropped on the floor and no one ever checks how many clothes you go in with or what you truly do inside… some macys are better but many are really bad. Feels like a complete ghost town
Most of them have closed down in my area, but yeah, I remember going in one right before it closed for good, and I swear when I walked through the doors I heard a coyote howl. It was that depressing.
For an Australian equivalent, think Myer or David Jones. Amazed that they haven't gone under
Oh man. A month or so ago I needed a new bed. My mother was convinced Macy's was the best place to get it. We waited forever after picking what we wanted, only to finally be told they didn't have anyone there that day who could sell it to us.
I still like Macy's, because I can still find a particular brand of jeans there that I like and that fit me well. That said... their buyers have gone WAY downhill. They used to carry a lot of classic styles, but now have gone the way of faddish and current/soon-to-be-passé looks. Their store in downtown Chicago (used to be the flagship Marshall Fields) is a shadow of the old store; they've closed off half the footprint of each floor, and unfortunately they have lost any sense of "special-ness" they once had. I still shop there once in a blue moon, but not as often as I once did.
Macy's has declined significantly. The men's department is a sea of boring black, gray, and brown. Unless you're looking at golf clothes, or what to wear to the shore. Blasé to the max.
Because they want to ensure that they don't inflame the conservatives by offering clothes in more flamboyant colours
Load More Replies...I've had a problem with two gift cards that I've called them about twice now. Each time someone was going to call me back. So far...crickets.
I'm honestly surprised every "Check cashing" and "payday loan" and "title loan" place hasn't been shut down due to violence against their staff, yet. Every single one of those places is a detriment to their community and the fact that nobody is throwing molotovs in to them on a regular basis astounds me.
I recall that Biden wanted to clean up the check cashing ripoff industry but as usual Republicans blocked anything that might actually help the consumer.
I've used a payday loan a couple of times and in their defense, when I got the loan, the interest rates and the final amount of money to be paid back was in large print all over the place: in signs in the stores, in the contract, and on all the brochures they have. You'd pretty much have to be illiterate to not know how much they charge or how much you would end up owing them, plus it was explained out loud to me at least twice. I got that loan knowing exactly how much I would need to pay it off and was able to budget for that. So to be honest, I can't consider them predatory at all. It's not their fault the average American is dumb as a crumb.
Who ensured the average American was dumb? All hail the government who has discouraged critical thinking in schools since the 60's. Be good little wage slaves and eat your corn syrup!
Load More Replies...At least in the United States, at least, most poor or even work class people do not have access to credit and so cannot get a bank account. Even a checking account. While these services can be predatory, they also provide at least some financial services to those who would not otherwise have any. Some companies (Manpower comes to mind) who hire manual laborers on a temporary basis, have started issuing their employees reloadable debit Visa debit cards so they get all their pay (check cashing takes a cut) and their lives are generally easier.
All the mattress stores that are somehow across the street from each other and never have any customers but open new locations down the street all the time.
No. Just their markup is so high, if they sell 3 mattresses in 2 months, they are good.
Load More Replies...Last year when I bought a new foam mattress I learned that you can direct order all these foam mattresses from the manufacturer and pay almost half the price the mattress retail stores sell them for.
Never buy a mattress from one of those "sleep cheap" type places. Sometimes they sell used mattresses that are refurbished and sold as new. You could get bedbugs as a bonus extra.
Don't get many in the UK, but there is one near me that's a foam matress and firework shop.... always wondered how that place was allowed to exist to begin with, let alone stay open. We always joke that the flat above it must be the cheapest in the uk
Mary Kay
I love their facial cleanser. It is the only thing I've found that helps with my acne.
There's someone in my area with a Mary Kay pink Cadillac from the 80's. It's well taken care of, and recently got a spiffy new pink paint job.
Chuck E. Cheese’s, lost its hay day years ago, business sucks, shows aren’t that good, animatronics mostly gone at this point. And debt. Lots of it. Surprised they’re still around even though they just filed for bankruptcy three years ago.
Another one I've never heard of as an European. What are you all talking about, what are those companies/shops?
They're famous (kinda) for kids having their birthday parties there. The infamous for their animatronic stage shows. Seriously, they're horrifying.

Was at a Joann Fabrics store just yesterday. Happens to be next door to a Chuck E Cheese, I didn't even know it was there! Walking into Joann, I smell a strange smell. Look over at Cheese, and 2 of their employees are out front, smoking what I assume is NOT a cigarette. It's supposed to be a place for kids! I know where I will NOT be taking my kids!
Amway!
Tv guide still exists In print, not just the channel.
I noticed it's more 'magazine' sized and had content other than TV listings, I guess it's geared now to readers who use it more than for just TV listings. I rememeber the TV commercials for it .....and I think last one I was was probably 20 years ago.
Those adult video stores.
I think most of them just have the dvd's, but they are open because people are buying sex toys and supplements that suggest you will be a monster in bed
Some medications cause problems that supplements help to reverse. It's not even trying to be a "monster" in bed. It's just to be able to perform.
Load More Replies...As long as there are men there will be adult video stores. Pornography in any form is as profitable as alcohol.
31% of porn consumers are women, and the industry can only continue to exist so long as there are women willing to go on camera.....so not really something you can attribute solely to "men"

Uber. After 14 years and $32bn of cumulative losses, they have only just this year started to turn a profit.
Their CEO recently did an interview with a major national news organization. The reporter took a basic Uber from his hotel to the Uber office (5 miles). The reporter asked the CEO to estimate his Uber trip cost. The damn CEO guessed ~$25 for a non surge time. The reporter told him he was wrong. The trip cost ~$75 (without a tip). The CEO responded with "wow, really?"
And in houston, the driver would get about 12% of that.
Load More Replies...I used Uber last time I had to take my car to the shop (about 5 miles). The trip home cost me $6 and the trip back was $8
I only use UBER or Lyft when I go out and plan to have drinks. In my area, I have found that Lyft is cheaper. I wouldn't use the service for much more than that. The first time I used it tho to avoid drinking and driving, the car pulled up and it reeked of a freshly smoked joint. Sigh
Not gonna lie, I've never been in an Uber, don't think they cover my tiny Ayrshire town to be honest
I asked for a quote from Dartford to Catford from a Black Cab at just before Midnight on Saturday (about 11 miles) was thinking maybe less than £30 should about cover it. Wasn't prepared to pay more than that as especially at that time of night, the trip would have taken 20 - 30 mins tops. The driver quoted me £55. I laughed at him, pulled up my phone and showed him that Uber would do the same trip for £23.95. Absolute rip off. In London especially they seem to be able to just charge what they want even though they're supposed to be regulated but they still want Uber off their patches.
A. A black cab will be 100% safe. B. Those drivers know every single street in the area they serve and the fastest way to get there. Personally, at that time of night, as a single female, that would probably be my choice.

Yahoo. They've been through a lot and are still staying alive.
Me too. I actually have 3 yahoo email accounts: one for serious email (job resumes, etc), one for general emails with a username I use all over the internet, and one for ordering stuff where I don't want them (Target, Walmart, etc) knowing my username but where I also don't want them to have access to my "serious" email to spam for their business. This works well for me.
Load More Replies...Yup it's their free email I have it's my public address where I can get tons of junk that I can just DELETE, and you'd be amazed at what's in my spam folder, their news is so iffy there's stories there that are probably 2 or 3 years old.
The only good thing about yahoo, was their chatrooms which filled the void left from the mass abandonment of AOL. It's been almost 11 years since they shuttered the chatrooms, and ended any public justification for using their mismanaged products.
I preferred MSN chatrooms back then. Still used Yahoo thou, I use my one of my emails on Yahoo for junk mail.
Load More Replies...Honestly? F****n Netflix They upped the price, cracked down on password sharing, and there’s talk about them adding ads. They don’t have any big or popular franchises anymore, there’s like 5 things worth watching, and don’t bother with any of the original content they spend literal millions of dollars on every year because no matter how good or well received the show is it will be canceled in the first or second season. The only thing people consistently tune in to Netflix for is Stranger Things, so they’ll probably have a spike in 5 years when the next season comes out.
Five things worth watching? There are many series and documentary films worth watching on there.
About 90% of my "TV" watching is Netflix. The other 10% is Amazon. The total cost for both is about 1/5th what my cable bill was 15 years ago when I dropped it.
The kids and I watch Netflix every day. We've never watched Stranger Things here. Maybe people have different taste in TV? Where are you getting that people only tune in for Stranger Things?
There take on it seems confusing. I don't use it as much since a lot of shows I was watching got cancelled for another season, but there's still some good stuff
Load More Replies..."There's like 5 things worth watching" -- what the heck are you smoking?
First, they spend BILLIONS on their original content. They have 250 million subscribers worldwide....and they're one of the few streaming services that have international service. That you didn't mention big mouth (or it's spin off Human Resources) shows you're not really paying attention. To say nothing of the fact that they are THE platform for comedy fans. Every streaming service is jacking up prices, because like every other "disruptive" service, they're just repackaging an existing product, squeezing every cent they can out of it as quickly as possible before growth flatlines and reality sets in. But it's still insane that people have somehow convinced themselves that they're being wronged because a company no longer wants to allow infinite people to utilize a single paid service.
Guitar Center, I worked for them for 13 years, they were on the brink of death the whole time.
No sure why. The one close to me is always busy. A guitar, bass, drums, etc, are things you want to play before buying. They aren't internet things
Agreed. I bought my full-sized keyboard, two guitars, several congas, and a mandolin from them. I'm not about to buy any of those online.

KFC. They lowered their quality so much I can’t eat there. I actually have a Colonel Sanders tattoo. So, you can say I'm a fan. I'm really a fan of the man himself. He failed over and over and died a household name. Look him up. It's a cool story.
KFC is not so bad and is keeping standard, at least here in Poland - in KFC meat look like meat. McDonalds on the other hand is just a crappy shadow of what it used to be... And the prices are so pumped up it is in fact cheaper to eat a decent meal in a regular restaurant than at McDonalds.
You would not recognize KFC if you ate it in the US. The quality has gone down so much. It looks like they are cooking pigeons instead of chicken the pieces are so small.
Load More Replies...Here in Germany I can't say anything bad about their quality, but they sure upped their prices over the years. Little anecdote: In my parents' house, my stepfather is doing the cooking, and is usually up early on all the family holidays to prepare a nice celebratory lunch or dinner. Because of that, on his own birthdays he wants a more relaxed routine, so he usually treats the whole family to some KFC and my wife and I pick it up on the way there. Been like that for years, until last year he had to spend almost double what it used to be to feed everybody. It was then we decided to make it ourselves this year, because you can buy a hell lotta chicken for that money.
He also died penniless. Not such a great story, after all. He was taken advantage of repeatedly.
Meh....i'm gonna call BS on this one. Like any franchise, quality varies from one location to the next. Even growing up in the 80's and 90's everyone knew where the "good" McDonalds/burger king/taco bell/KFC was.....because they were NOT slinging equal quality goods. My Wife has lived her whole life in Romania, i've been here for 12 years, and she had KFC for the first time after i came here, when we went to Bucharest. It took another 5 years for one to make its way to our city, (2 more popped up over the past 7 years) and she was absolutely smitten by this. 1-3 times a week we would make a trip to the mall with the express purpose of getting KFC. When they would have the 20 piece bucket o' wings special for $5, we'd get a couple and that would be her lunch for work over the next few days. It was her favorite and only vice. Cont..
Two years ago, my mom moved over here and bought a couple pounds of Old Bay seasoning. Which i took as an opportunity to make wings at home. It costs $6-$8 to make 50, high quality chicken wings, 10 minutes of prep, an hour to cook them. I think we've gone to KFC twice in the past two years only on a whim because we were at the mall already. It's not that the quality has degraded, it's simply that sooner or later, most or at the very least some people come to realize they can make something considerably better at home for a fraction of the cost and do so in a manner that won't lead to the aforementioned health issues.
Load More Replies...Look up the world's first KFC. It was made started by a direct ancestor of mine (where the Harman comes from in it's name). Adding, because it started here in Utah, it's not leaving sny time soon. The phrase "a Starbucks on every corner"... replace KFC and that's Utah.
It began in Corbin, Kentucky, which is where Colonel *Harland* Sanders began selling out of his roadside restaurant. The first actual restaurant franchised as "KFC" opened in Salt Lake city, though.

Kentucky Fried Chicken used to be what's considered fast casual food. They had reasonable prices with a generally reasonably friendly staff. Then they changed to KFC and became straight up fast food. Quality took a nose dive across the menu. I stopped going years ago and now goto Popeyes or my local owned chicken place.
Papa Johns. Horrible food that somehow gets worse every year. In the 90's they rocked.
This always makes me laugh. Papa Johns quality is exactly the same today as it was in the 90's. Nothing has changed there, it's just that there are better options more widely accessible today....they're comparatively worse, but functionally identical.
Their quality went to c**p after the first couple of years. Less toppings, cheaper cheeses. Total garbage.
Load More Replies...I dunno what the op is smoking, the one by my house is fantastic, i even suggested to the manager they bring a floridian flavor to their store and is become one of the top selling pizzas they have. They rocked for about 5 minutes in the 90s. BTW, the "90s" isn't meant to be possessive.
I craved Papa John's cheese sticks and garlic butter when I was pregnant with my second in '98. Their food has never tasted as good as it did to a pregnant woman 2 weeks overdue!
Chipotle. They had a severe ecoli outbreak that spread to at least 13 states.
If you must get food poisoning get it from here tho.... Awesome food! 🤣
Yeah? So has bagged lettuce and pretty much every other type of produce....which is the underlying cause of the outbreaks. Uncooked produce, is ALWAYS going to have a higher chance of spreading disease, because it's very very difficult to wash these types of bugs away. Between industrialized farming, increased food imports from questionable sources and global warming, this is a trend that will only get worse.
In Australia food that is too spicy is referred to as "bum- burners" this may well be a side effect or even a true exper
Subway! Quiznos and Blimpie have better sandwiches!
Subway? Truths. They finally put in slicers but that meat still sits in a warehouse for 3+ months before being shipped out from a central warehouse. Their bread isn't even classified as bread in ireland (i think it was) due to the higher sugar content. I always go with publix subs which the bread is baked fresh that morning and all the meat has a max of 2 days being stored if they last that long before sold (aka the meat is used quickly and some deliveries are only 10hrs before used up fully)
I had coupons for Quiznos. Regretted buying them after the 3rd visit. Never again. We have a Subway that we know the owner and he complies to policies. He has fresh bread every morning. We have several stores around town but we only go to one. We don't try the ones on the road anymore either; some breads were moldy, dry, etc. Never again.
True. Yet, Subway has the most locations of any fast food company in the USA. They operate mainly on the franchise model and do not care if 4 subway franchisee's, within a small radius, slug it out for king/queen of the local sub provider. Also, Quiznos and Blimpee are not nearly as big, which helps quality control.
I quit going to Subway when they started asking for tips at the register. $14 for a sandwich and then a tip? Not in this lifetime.
I prefer Subway over Quiznos and never had/don't have Blimpie. Though I will say I vastly prefer Mr. Sub (Canadian) and "Erbert and Gerbert" (US) E&G is amazing!
I was shocked to discover how much sugar was in their bread. In Ireland they legally classified it as not being bread, and should be classified as confectionary. Wtaf?
It feels like they have been saying Claire's is on the edge of bankruptcy for 20 years.
Wow, blast from the past. I remember them and Spencer's Gifts in the mall back in the 80's. I also loved the smell of Swiss Colony.

Best Buy. I thought they would have gone the way of Fry’s, The Good Guys or RadioShack
Fry's was nerd heaven. A combination of Radioshack and a physical manifestation of newegg. I don't understand how Fry's could shutter it's doors while Microcenter is doing the same exact thing and expanding at a frenzied pace.
Last I'd heard they eliminating all physical media in their stores (CD's, DVD's, Blu-Ray, etc.)
Buffalo Wild Wings. Hear me out: Music so loud you can't hear yourself think, wings that taste meh at best, and an insane price tag to boot.
The CEO of that company needs to go to the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, where Buffalo Wings originated. Then compare those wings with what they make at Buffalo Wild Wings.
Music? That must be a managerial choice. The one in my town doesn't do that. Everything else is true, I guess.
Crumbl Cookies strike me as a business that is absolutely going to collapse within a couple years. Comes across as a fad; far too aggressive with their outreach (almost 1000 locations have opened since they were founded in 2017 and the vast majority of them popped up within the past 3 years alone); they’ve gotten in trouble with the *federal government* due to child labor law violations. They’re also a run by a bunch of Mormons and former employees flat out say that you can’t get promoted if you aren’t one. Comes across as a terrible investment
Omg. Google Utah Cookie Wars. Thankfully it's finally clearing up and should soon end. But, put it simply Crumbl sued a competitor because "they use the same recipe, same type of box (they claim the logo is too similar, which it's not), and stole their original idea of a rolling/weekly-changing menu". All which are supposedly direct cause of losing customers to the competitor. They have acted as if they started the idea of cookie business to begin with, and thus nobody else has rights to the same. As if no mall in the 80s didn't smell like Mrs Fields.
Kmart and Sears. They're on their last leg, and I'm going to be sad for them to go, but how there's still two Kmarts left and a couple dozen Sears left is shocking
Sears makes me sad. They've been around since 1893, they sold over 70,000 pre-fab houses between 1908 and 1942, most of which are still standing to this day. They were an american institution. K-mart, while it's been around nearly as long (and cratered due to a botched sears merger) has been viewed, at least for all my 40 years, as a cheap and trashy store. Really think about that. Think of how many "people of wal-mart" listicles exist today, and realize that k-mart still has a worse customer reputation.
Sears used to be popular here in Canada too, but all of their stores shut down about 7 years ago.
Currently, there are 11 Sears stores left. And a total of 6 Kmarts (only 2 are in the continental U.S., there is 1 in Guam and 3 in the U.S. Virgin Islands.)

They don't survive on joe/jane public. For the vast majority of their business, they operate off of business accounts.
Yeah, having worked in the industry this is absolutely correct. It depends on the company, but a lot of the retail stores are only around to support the business delivery accounts. Along with a little extra income from walk-ins.
Load More Replies...as an employee, the stores can operate with very few employees. cleaning is rather minimal but that's fine since office supplies don't need the same conditions as food, it's like a warehouse with decent lighting inside the store. many people still come in for printers, ink, school supplies, printing services, and furniture. the store can run with one manager, one checkout person one stocker, and a print technician for half the day. and all the employees do their best to help every customer. Surviving as a business is easy, especially since we are one of the only office supply stores in the area.
Burger King. I never see anyone inside them, the parking lot and drive thru are always empty. When was the last you or anyone you know ate there? How are they still around?
I like Burger King. I hate that I have to pay an additional .60 cents for a piece of cheese and I don't know that I've ever gotten hot onion rings but the taste of their burgers and quality of toppings is far superior to McDonalds. OP is correct though, I have no idea how the one in our town is still open because if there are 2 cars in the parking lot that's busy for them. During the same time frame the McDonalds next door is slammed.

Quiznos. All Quiznos where I live have gone out of business get some still exist in my state. Gods I miss the place...
I'm amazed they ever existed. Toasted sandwich bread? I'm on board. But when you try to hand me a sandwich with hot, or even warm lettuce and deli meats? Repulsive. When i was in high school, there was a blimpies, and a quizno's with a clothing store in between. I had friends that worked in each after school. I would go into quizno's and get just toasted bread, and then take it over to blimpies to assemble the sandwich. Excellent end result that ended up being cheaper then just buying something off the menu.
Boston Market
They've shut them all down here in the NY/NJ area for not paying their employees enough.
The last time I ate at one the price of a meal was ridiculously high, even taking COVID and inflation into account.
DoorDash somehow loses money on every transaction. Not clear how that’s sustainable for any kind of growth
They certainly make money per transaction. If you go to an actual restaurant's menu online and then compare the prices on doordash, you'd be surprised to see that they don't match! Doordash prices are $1-$3 more! Found this out when hubby and I were looking at menus online. Me on doordash, him on google since he doesn't have the app. Stopped ordering from doordash after that!
Yes....but you're failing to recognize that they still have to pay delivery drivers. The minimal markup isn't enough to cover their costs, and paying delivery drivers is just ONE of the costs that they have to cover. If you bought a house to fix up for $50,000....and spent $100,000 on renovation costs...only to end up selling the place for $140,000....you didn't make a $90,000 profit, you lost $10,000.

Tim Hortons. It used to sell decent fare but they expanded their selection of food in 2006, got bought out and took an absolute nosedive in food quality. The only people who seem to like it are younger Canadians with no memory of the "before" times and newcomers to the country.
Aww man. I remember after I got my license, I would stop for Timbits and a cuppa before class almost every day. Now, meh. They have them in the states now too and I had to stop once when we were driving through a town and spotted one just for the nostalgia. I think people assume that because I'm Canadian I have some ingrained loyalty to the brand, but like most of us, when I hear the name I just shake my fist angrily at the sky.
Tim Hortons' are expanding too. They started opening stores in China just as the pandemic first hit (great timing Tim!), but they got through that and now have quite a lot of stores in Beijing. They don't sell donuts here though.
In my town, we have TH at almost every corner and they usually are full too. Very popular here (Ontario Canada). They have 3 in one of our hospitals too. When I used to work, at the last place, there were runs to Timmy's 2-3 times a day. A bunch of people were assigned to take orders and money and go there to pick-up what was needed.

It depends on the location. I live in an affluent suburb and our Party City store is always busy. Not unusual for people here to spend hundreds on party supplies, especially their nice balloons. HP. Specifically their printers but not just their printers. They are so shamelessly anti-consumer that I don't know why anyone would buy HP. They don't have brand appeal like an Apple or Tesla, and competitors offer better versions of everything they sell.
Want to use your combination printer scanner as a scanner only? Sorry, it's out of ink, can't do that.
I have a theory that big businesses have huge amounts of hp products and they can get away with this behavior because as long as they get use out of the printer they don't care spending tons of money on subscription based ink.
Printer manufactures operate on the razor and blades sales practice. Hardware is sold at a SIGNIFICANT loss, on the assumption that they will recoup their losses through the sale of consumables. Printers are sold for around 50% +/- what it costs to manufacture them. Which doesn't include the costs of advertising/marketing shipping, whatever development costs and of course the fact that the average person neglects the machine causing stupid rates of repair costs while hardware is under warranty. Both laserjets and reservoir inkjets are a thing that have existed for a long time....but those machines are actually sold for an appropriate price (4-6x the cost of a cartridge printer) and so people are less inclined to buy them, while continuing to b***h about not getting what they don't actually pay for.
