Do you shift from one side to another in the middle of the night, unable to sleep because of the summer heat? Well, let’s just say you’re not the only one having trouble getting a full night’s rest, as the temperatures this season have been scorching hot in many parts of the world. Record-breaking heat waves and vicious wildfires have swept throughout the northern hemisphere, particularly Western Europe, the UK, China, and parts of the US. And they bring dire consequences.

The searing heat has damaged roads, melted cars and traffic lights, and led to significant impacts we can’t ignore. As we’ve all been feeling (and excessively sweating!) it lately, people took to the internet to share their experiences, one photo at a time.

Our team at Bored Panda has scoured the web and compiled a collection of vivid pictures that sum up how the summer of 2022 shaped up to be a scorcher. So grab a cold drink, blast that fan, and continue scrolling. Keep reading to also find our in-depth interview with climate psychologist, activist and writer Jessica Kleczka. Be sure to upvote as you go, and let us know how the high temperatures have affected you and your surroundings these past few months in the comments.

Psst! After you’re done with this list, more heat wave madness can be found in Part 1 of this feature right here.

While scorching heat may not seem as dramatic as other natural disasters (read: floods and tornadoes), the U.S. National Weather Service has deemed it the deadliest weather hazard over the past 30 years. It's especially dangerous during summer when the northern half of the planet is tilted toward the sun, and the northern hemisphere receives increased daylight hours and warmth.

When it comes to heat waves, there seems to be no universal definition of the term as it is relative to local weather conditions. But the same National Weather Service refers to it as a period of abnormally hot weather generally lasting more than two days with high temperatures of at least 90 degrees.

Heat waves begin when high pressure in the atmosphere (also known as an anticyclone) builds up, moves in, and pushes warm air toward the ground. That creates a sinking column of air that warms up further as it is compressed. While moisture in the earth can blunt the effects of the heat (the same way our bodies evaporate sweat to cool the body), with so little water in the soil, there isn’t as much to soak up the heat. So as the ground warms, it often dries out, trapping the latent heat already absorbed by the landscape to heat up even more.

Then, the high-pressure system acts as a cap or a lid on a pot, otherwise known as a "heat dome". It even pushes out cooler, fast-moving air currents and minimizes wind and cloud cover, which gives the sun an open line of sight to the ground. It’s also why heat waves place themselves over an area for several days or longer.

I've rescued a few hedgehogs over the years and the vets always say if they're out during daylight there is something wrong. Good giving the little one water but if remains out or come out repeatedly at day time it's time to take it to a vet. In the UK they treat wildlife for free.

To learn more about these sweltering heat waves and the effects they have on our health and the state of the world in general, we reached out to Jessica Kleczka, a climate psychologist, environmental social scientist, and climate justice activist. "The current heat wave in Europe has led to droughts, crop failures and thousands of heat deaths," she told Bored Panda.

"The UK was forced to declare a red weather warning for heat for the first time in history, with temperatures breaching 40°C [104 °F] in London. While there is not enough data on this particular heat wave yet, we know that the last major heat wave in 2018 was made 30 times more likely by climate change, and we can expect similar conclusions to this current extreme weather event," Kleczka added.

While it may seem tricky to pinpoint how a specific weather event was influenced by climate change, Kleczka explained, "Climate breakdown is primarily driven by the burning of fossil fuels, which contribute around 90% of global CO2 emissions."

"The International Energy Agency said last year that there can be no new coal, oil and gas if we are to avert dangerous heating," she continued. "What we need to see now are ambitious policies from global political leaders in the run-up to COP27 [The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference], away from these dirty fuels and towards renewables and energy efficiency."

The dire reality is that climate change caused by greenhouse gasses from burning fossil fuels is poised to make heat waves longer, stronger, and more common. But Kleczka pointed out that a growing number of studies now show that additional warming can be halted within a few years — but only if we act with urgency.

"Ambitious climate action can be very effective and avert the worst impacts of climate breakdown, if done the right way. Any approach must center the most vulnerable people, those on the frontlines of the climate crisis, and Indigenous communities who protect 80% of global biodiversity," she said.

Unfortunately, a fridge or freezer generates more heat in the room if you leave it on and open the door, due to the excess effort of trying to keep itself at low temperature. Okay for a short blast, but don't leave it open and on.

When it comes to the major cities, however, the summers there shape up to get warmer, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). See, hot spells are occurring more often than they used to in the big cities across the country. Their frequency has increased gradually, "From an average of two heat waves per year during the 1960s to six per year during the 2010s and 2020s".

Small wonder, as urban areas further exacerbate the heat, and you can clearly see the examples in this list. Cities like Houston or New Orleans experience higher temperatures than outlying areas because their roads, parking lots, and buildings cover natural areas and absorb more heat than their surroundings. A phenomenon that's also known as the urban heat island effect.

As the EPA stated, "Structures such as buildings, roads, and other infrastructure absorb and re-emit the sun’s heat more than natural landscapes such as forests and water bodies." In these areas, daytime temperatures are about 1–7°F higher than in outlying areas, and nighttime temperatures are about 2-5°F higher.

I remember playing in a tennis tournament as a kid where the whole torney had to be moved to the clay courts because shoes were melting on the hard courts. Before moving courts I ruined a brand new pair of shoes because as I returned a service, the sole detached and was melted to whatever material the hard court was made of. That made an impression.

When in a heat wave I do a couple of things: no walks in the day. Early morning and when the sun has gone down. And I allways go out to the road and feel how hot the tarmac is before. During the day, our pup can be in our garden - when he is not sleeping under the aircondition

These numbers affect our health, our lifestyles, and the economy in general. If humanity keeps going down this path, heat waves can turn densely populated parts of the world into uninhabitable territories in the future.

"We're already seeing major losses of fertile land around the world and large areas could become uninhabitable in the coming decades if urgent climate action is not taken — including coastal towns and cities in the global north," Kleczka explained. "These impacts are already happening close to home."

Not technically melted, but softened by heat and then someone rode it. that's HDPE, it melts at 140°C but at 80°C starts getting soft and loses most of its mechanical properties.

For certain parts of society, the impact will be even more challenging. "Marginalized communities, such as people of color and those living in poverty, tend to be disproportionately affected by heat waves due to poor quality of housing."

Kleczka continued: "In buildings that lack insulation, temperatures can be even higher than outdoors, leading to heat stress and premature death. This poses considerable risk to the elderly, chronically ill and disabled, who are more vulnerable to extreme temperatures as they can exacerbate pre-existing conditions."

Heat waves not only impact our physical health and well-being, but they worsen our mental health, too. "[They] have been linked to a rise in depressive episodes, anxiety, and suicide attempts. Researchers say that for every 1°C increase in monthly temperatures, mental health-related deaths increase by 2.2%."

Moreover, some medications prescribed to people who suffer these conditions "also increase the risk of heat-related death, while others become less effective in rising temperatures."

Smart cat. He'll catch an updraft there if one is to be had.

When these alarming weather phenomena seem on a path to increasingly impact our daily lives, it’s easy to feel like we’re running out of time to act. Thankfully, Kleczka offered some reassuring words on how everyone can strive to mitigate heat waves.

"It's important to remember that all is not lost if we keep pushing for political action," she said. "What we need to see now is a rapid shift away from fossil fuels, major investments in renewables, energy efficiency and home insulation, as well as climate finance and loss and damage to communities on the frontline, who have been made vulnerable by centuries of colonialism and continued exploitation."

Car washes are a tremendous waste of water, especially with the Colorado river drying up. They are looking into piping water from the Mississippi River out west. Pools, golf courses, car washes, all a waste. Might as well water a cemetery.

At least there are car washes that recycle some water for re-use. Some i read up to 30 percent fresh and 70% reclaimed

This heat will melt the adhesive of things stuck to your car, including the name of the car. My van had the word "Odyssey" drooping down in a giant black smear of glue. Also, the seals in car windows and doors can melt right out, and old auto glass can shatter. It's terrifying.

No way that's from hot weather. Air should have exceeded 150°C and the light colors would not have allowed much heat buildup in the material itself. It's for sure caused by exposure to a nearby fire.

"If we don't do these things, heat waves will grow in frequency and severity, but there is definitely still hope." If you want to take action, Kleczka mentioned a note-worthy campaign called the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. Ever since 2019, this global initiative has aimed to phase-out fossil fuels and build a globally just transition for every worker, community, and country.

"The climate movement is strong and growing. The best thing people can do to tackle the climate crisis is to get involved in their local climate group (or remotely) and help build a political mandate for a just transition and sustainable future for all," Kleczka concluded.

Big old trees resist quite well, their roots go searching the water deep underneath the ground. Unfortunately young trees just won't make it, even if you plant them by thousands. We should stop cutting existing forests in the first place. Which won't happen, because we'll run out of oil and will need something else to heat our houses, since there will still be cold winters.

Schools in the UK don’t generally have AC. Neither do homes. So you’d pull parents out of work to take their kids to a place that’s just as hot to do nothing except moan about how hot it is. At least this way parents can still work and kids are getting some education.

Back in HS (82-83) the heatwave in Texas was so bad that they opened school 2 weeks late in some places. All extra curricular activities were canceled after 2 football (American) players passed out at 7 or 8am from the heat. Usually AC is only used in the afternoon. That year it was on when we got there at 730am. It was already 85-90 degrees that early.

A better idea is to mist rubbing alcohol all over the place. It evaporates faster than water thus providing better cooling. And bonus: it alerts you to any and all small cuts and wounds you did not know you had.

nothing to do with morning. early in the morning is ok. we have to water twice a day AND provide shade. .. if not, plants in no time die this way like pictured.

Here we've had 50⁰C-55⁰C. It's unbelievably hot. But it's not bothering anyone very much, since our country is used to these boiling temperatures. I can say, we're tough!

Always water at night so this doesn't happen, in the morning you are just asking to turn your plant crispy. Maybe water the soil but not the leaves....

Houston, TX hit over 100 degrees the 1st week of May. That's early in the year for that kind of heat even for us as. We've hit over 110 w/ a heat index of 120-125 in late July/August. West Texas is even worse, I hear. Most of the state is on mandatory water conservation - no watering lawns (unless using cook or bath water), no filling large personal pools (use community or public pools), local public splash parks are closed (free), but not the big expensive water parks, although many shut down wave pools, slides, & surfing areas to conserve water, the main pools are still open & usually packed. All the lawns are brown, but they usually are this time of year. Our grass is usually back to normal late September/early October. Doubt it this year

Not a temperature issue, just a malfunction. Those signs fail all the time. The sensors used for those signs go from -55°C to 125°C, and are installed in a way to measure the air temperature, usually enclosing them in a place exposed to air but not direct sunlight and wind.

Must be trees way to protect themselves from the excessive heat. They draw up water and nutrients from the soil, but the heat of the sun drives the pump. When there is too little moisture, they get rid of the leaves to save water inside, same as deciduous plants do when winter approaches.

Foliage may be getting sunburned from the excessive heat. Also disease + unusually hot, dry weather + thirsty, weak trees will drop dry, dead leaves. Hopefully the unusual weather has triggered healthy trees to change for a beautiful, early Fall … to beat the heat. Fingers crossed 🤞🤞

The water in the machine needs to be at a certain temperature to be able to make coffee or to have steam (for the cappuccino's frothy milk). The machine is turned off but the water is hot because of the room temperature. I hope this explains

OK, Im a huge fan of cycling - but that heat is not just melting the road, it's incredibly stupid of organisers to let the race continue in that heat. Our races get cancelled in summer when organisers find it too hot for riders' safety. We've had riders pass out and crash so many times and that's just normal 30degree heat. But yeah TdF - Big money, no concern I suppose.

Most likely a cigarette butt started a fire on the dry sleepers. Wood self-ignites at about 300°C, no way it got so hot only from sunlight. Fires fueled by debris and thrown paper, started by cigarette butts, are a frequent cause of delays in many metropolitan train lines.

    Jrog

I call BS on this. Tires normal operating temperature is close to 80-90°C. That means if you drive for a while, they go up to that temperature anyway from friction and ground contact. 32°C is a joke, even for a very old tire, especially with "low tire pressure". Even if we accept the "blowout" theory, the shoulder should show a gash at the weakest point. This tire looks like was shredded by mechanical impact and prolonged rolling after being deflated, but absolute lack of marks on the bodywork tell a different story, OP is lying.

    Robert T

If the tyre was underinflated, the increased flexation in the sidewall can easily produce enough heat and damage to cause a blowout. Rubber hardens with age and so the sidewalls will have been less flexible because of it. TBH this could have happened on a cold day. Current recommendation is to change tyres when they reach 6 years old.

It definitely will cause cracks in the glass if you do it this way. It is important to keep the heat off the glass, so you need to put the foil on the outside. I invested in outside shutters for all my windows last year and it makes all the difference. No holidays abroad for 2 years because of the investment but worth every penny

I've bought a sun screen for the car that folds like an umbrella, very practical. Few days ago I went grocery shopping with my brother and since I knew it would take while and the car was parked under the sun, I started opening the screen. My brother was baffeled: "Do you really need an umbrella just for those few steps to the supermarket entrance?!" I rolled my eyes: "You have a valid excuse for thinking that this is a personal umbrella, but didn't you ask yourself why I'm opening it IN the freaking car?" He replied: "Donno. Me dumb."

I wonder if someone might have bumped the metal frame at some point & then the heat caused the frame to expand & cause the glass to shatter. I guess they're lucky the glass is coated & didn't shower down on everyone below!

Use some towels and wring them in water. The water need not be very cold. Put them on your head and anywhere else you feel the heat. It sounds too simple, but it works until the water has completely evaporated and that may take hours.

Definitely not silicone, most likely some butadiene compound. Those are very cheap and have a low melting point, close to 80-100°C that is definitely attainable on a black dashboard. Butadiene rubbers are often used as a substiture for silicone in cheap (usually chinese) products because are easier to mold and much much cheaper. Silicone is an absolute beast in terms of heat resistance, with even the worst ones going well above 200°C, up to 400°C for an average food-grade silicone, and some purpose-mixed ones going up to 1450°C

Exactly. I have several silicon kitchen tools that become much hotter than 40-50 c° on a daily basis and baking sheets that withstand 250 c°.
