On Monday, August 21, 2017, millions of people were staring at the same thing through doofy glasses, as they tried to catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse. Not only that, they also immortalized the awe-inspiring moment in photos, and Bored Panda has collected the best of them in case you missed the phenomenon or can't get enough of it.

A total solar eclipse covered a narrow portion of the United States from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. And a partial one was visible across the entire continent of North America, as well as in parts of South America, Africa, and Europe. This was the first time since 1918 when North America experienced the path of totality from coast to coast.

People parked in my lot with chairs, umbrellas, etc. I went out and announced that the eclipse had been cancelled, six people started to pack up and leave. One old woman said "Well, s**t! all the way from Cincinnati for nothing!" This is my most memorable moment of the eclipse.

More than half of these images are fake. They're interesting, and well done, but not photographs. I wish BoredPanda would do a better job of fact checking.

Makes you wonder what their motivations are, doesn't it? Why fake something like that? What does anyone get out of it?

I was blessed to be in Varanasi on July 22, 2009 to see the solar eclipse. It was one of the places where complete viewing was predicted although it was not the best place. A village in Bihar was the hot spot in India & prediction was that China will have the best view. I & my elder daughter decided to take a chance at Varanasi & we were not disappointed. We had never seen so many people in our life. There were millions of people right from the Mughal Sarai railway station to the Ganga Ghats. We could manage a vantage point & were ready to shoot the eclipse. Unfortunately it started pouring from the dark cloudy skies. Surprisingly the moment eclipse started clouds over the sun cleared out & rain stopped. I could photograph the whole eclipse, every stage of this amazing surreal natural event. I will never forget the darkness at the time of totality & a big “”AHH”” coming out of awestruck millions watching the event. It was interesting to photograph the people taking holy bath & praying; collarge-5...1d58e1.jpg collarge-599df7a1d58e1.jpg

The thing I like about this is that you don't see many *long* exposures of totality. Seeing the face of the moon there is a little jarring, because we're used to high shutter speeds so you capture the black of the night sky around the corona and, necessarily, keep the dark side of the moon completely underexposed. This is very unique, and tells a compelling story. Well done!

How dark it is depends on how long your exposure is. This was a long exposure, hence the light sky and visibility of the "dark" side of the moon.

Lots of Photoshop going on here, denied or not. Images of eclipse WAY too large in relation to foreground in most shots. Fine, but don't claim otherwise.

Nope. Just a long lens, probably 800mm or so, taken from down at the bottom of a steep hill. Perfectly possible to do this without any compositing.

You can get big exposures of the moon and sun with telephoto lenses and the right angle. It is likely that the overall shot is genuine. However, the detail on the moon is completely fake. The sun's corona completely washes out any detail from the moon, just like a silhouette of someone standing in a doorway, you can't see their face clearly. Except the sun's corona is the brightest incandescent bulb ever, and the moon is naturally dark grey in colour already.
