Drink water instead of pretty much anything else.
Except coffee. I'm not a monster.
Speaking of monster... I'm a energy drink sucker!
Load More Replies...This is optimal, but for other people who have an aversion to water, for whatever reason: just stay hydrated. Whatever it is you will drink, drink plenty of it. Eat foods with high water contents. Keep an eye on what you're drinking, and the possible effects, but your body will function marginally better on six sodas and three cups of coffee than it does on a begrudgingly choked down bottle of water.
At least two foods I know of with high water contents are celery and cucumbers. A guess is water chestnuts, but I'm not sure
Load More Replies...I just don't like the taste of water - iced tea on the other hand is pretty good. I dont even need sugar.
Although my adult son says water has no taste, I don't like the taste. So I put a little fresh lemon juice in it. It's also good for health.
Load More Replies...I have a hard time drinking enough water for sensory reasons but replacing it with homemade, unsweetened, decaf iced tea is flavorful enough and doesn't have the usual issues.
water is good for my health. coffee is good for me for everyone else's health
LOL Once you cut out all that sweet, fizzy pop and sweet, sweet juice once you drink all that again after a long hiatus you'll wonder how you were able to ingest it and be able to taste all the types of sugar they cram in those drinks. If I really want juice, I dilute tf out of it.
For some reason I really felt like coke the other day (I haven't had one in years) and I swear I had to squeeze half a lemon to drink a small glass of the stuff. Instead of juice I recommend squeezing some grapefruit + mint leaves into a sparkling water.

Getting into the habit of saying please and thank you. I’ve seen endless horror stories about people in retail getting sh*t on by ungrateful and rude customers, so I made a resolve to try and be as amicable and cooperative whenever I can.
And it really made a difference. It really helps smooth things along when both people are working together to get things done as efficiently as possible. It’s a great feeling helping make someone’s day easier. Goes to show a little bit of kindness goes a long way.
This needs to be #1. I've worked retail and food service off-and-on for many years and I got all kinds of people. I will always be grateful to the customers that showed patience and kindness towards me. I do what I can to pay that forward because, unfortunately, these employees are still getting the short end of the stick because certain customers feel its okay to take their negative emotions out on minimum wage workers.
For me it feels like absolut standard to say please and thank you - and be nice in general. What would you say from your experience - what percentage is nice. I know it's always the terrible people that stand out more. I had the hope, that still most people trend to be nice. But also I've never worked in service, just at the hotline of a small IT company.
Load More Replies...as a person who was taught at like 4 years old to say please and thank you and does it by instinct, I can assure anyone that it's not that hard, and it can brighten someone's day!
I teach my 3 children to have proper manners. As an example, I WILL call for a manager to let them know when an employee is doing a good job!
My mom does that. She'll make a point of telling a supervisor or manager that the worker that helped her did a great job. I don't do that, but I do ask if there's a survey I can answer to give positive feedback.
Load More Replies...I found that you will get more out of people if you treat them well. Even received free first class upgrades when flying just by treating the airline staff well (and sometimes a box of chocolates)
I can vouch for this as I worked as a Ground Hostess back in the day. There were numerous people that I could have given an upgrade to (we regularly had oversold flights and needed to bump economy to mid class) but I didn't because they were rude and difficult. More fool them!
Load More Replies...My hubby and kids laugh at me, but I'll say excuse me even if no one's around
That is a very good habit. Then you would never forget it, when someone needed you to say that
Load More Replies...I have caught myself saying "bless you" to the TV after someone sneezed.
Load More Replies...I always try to be nice to everyone, especially those who works up front servicing customers.
Based from experience and in my workplace, if you are rude we give you what you want and that’s it. But if you are polite and nice we will go above and beyond and give beneficial insider advice. Word also spread and we let co- workers know who they be wary of.
I have a Google Home Mini and I always automatically say thank you after it's done talking.
Every time you leave a room take something that doesn't belong there and put it away. As soon as it is a habit you're house will stay tidy.
I don't like cleaning up after everyone else in the family, but it doesn't seem to bother them as much as me.
Don't throw their things away. Instead, toss them in a box, clearly labelled with their name. When the box is full, dump it in their bedroom. :)
Load More Replies...My kids' motto "every time you leave a room, pick out 10 things that belong in there and scatter them around the house."
Doesn't work for me - as I put things away, I keep finding things and bringing them out.
And, if you put it away, you will forget where it is and have to buy another.

1) Trying to see the other person's point of view, or at least not reacting explosively negative to it when you disagree. (This helps immeasurably with in-laws.)
2) knowing when to keep your mouth shut. It’s not necessary to always express an opinion or make a remark, especially when there's no hope of changing another's viewpoint.
3) It costs NOTHING to be kind, to affirm other people by recognizing them, to say please & thank you.
Yes. Yes. and Yes. 4) Choose your battles and, if necessary, concede defeat even if you're right. It's pointless to continue arguing.
Instead of conceding, which can just boost someone's ego, it's better to just walk away.
Load More Replies...Bull poo poo it costs NOTHING to be kind. A lot of times it costs me my ego. But. I've learned its better to teach others to be nice rather than angry. Eventually they'll do the same even if they're normally a very angry person.
5) You DON'T have to be offended just because someone does not agree with your views!
I've gotten to a place where I won't correct anyone on anything unless it's an absolute necessity but whenever anyone disagrees with my pov I genuinely try to examine why I hold my views and see if I could align myself with theirs. I have changed my view on how I vote and have realised that there are some things I don't know enough about to form an opinion. But I think OP is a rare gem, I wish others were like them..
Exercise at least 3-5 times a week. You don't need to train like a an Olympic athlete. Going for a walk or jog is good enough. Do pushups and crunches right after you get up. As long as you get your heart rate up.
Small steps, it'll all add up.
I really need to keep this consistent. The worst thing that has happened to me was a desk job. You're so burnt at the end of the day and you haven't even been active. It's insane.
Yes! You're not tired physically, but mentally drained.
Load More Replies...Can confirm. I bought a mini cycle to use in the evenings when I'm watching TV. Started off doing about 45 minutes a night, 6 days a week, now I'm up to about 1 to 1 1/2 hours a night, plus I started roller skating for about an hour and a half to two hours once a week and it has definitely helped me lose weight. I lost about 30 pounds since last summer and am about 15 or so pounds from my goal. It's a very steady pace and I am very happy with my results.
I trick myself by not exercising, but instead taking a soothing walk when i come home, taking a yoga class as self care, and doing weights because the instructor is really hot and kind to us all. But i never, ever exercise.
Depression puts a huge wrench in this. I don't care who says "BuT iT mAkEs YoU fEeL bEtTeR" because I went to the gym for 6 months straight and it did not help.
2 minute rule.
If you see something that needs doing that will take 2 minutes or less; go ahead and do it. Put away those clothes. Pick up that toy as you walk by. Empty that dish washer when you go to get a drink. Scoop the litterbox when you go to take a p**s.
Things will stay neater, you'll be more organized, and you'll find you have more time in the long run for stuff you want to do, instead of having to take care of stuff you've been putting off.
LOL Once I get going I don't stop. Washing dishes leads to cleaning my whole kitchen.
Everytime I microwave something, I use that time to tidy the kitchen, even if it's just a minute, it makes a difference
I'm "older" and still watch TV with commercials. I try to get up during the commercial breaks and do a chore - fill/empty the dishwasher, put in a load of laundry, clean the toilet. It's amazing how much you can get done in a series of two-to-three minute breaks throughout an evening.
You could shorten this to a 15-second rule and still get a lot of stuff accomplished. I once timed my daughter putting away her toys after she complained and complained, and it took her 15 seconds. She wasted more time complaining than she ever would have by just doing the chore.
I wash up whilst the kettle boils and it might take 2 or 3 cuppas, but it never feels like a chore.
Great habit to get into, honestly. Washing a couple cups and a bit of silverware while waiting for the coffee to brew or, like you, the kettle to boil, doesn't take any more time than, well, waiting for the coffee to brew/kettle to boil. Might not finish all the stuff in the sink but hey, after while you're gonna want another cuppa...
Load More Replies...I like the idea about the litter box. There may not be something to clean everytime you check. But we flush the toilet after we go. It's doing the same thing for your cat.
I have learned that not washing dishes right away is the road to perdition. The dishes in the sink and on the counter invite their friends out of the cupboards, and suddenly everything I own is out and needs washing.
My only issue with this is I don't just complete a single task, I'll clean everything...
If I leave the room to retrieve an item in another room I pass the barrier realm of " Why did I come in here." I have to repeat it like a mantra all the way there. Never stop to do something else.
Stop drinking soda. In the long run soda is bad for you and after a while of not drinking you will realize that it tastes to sweet.
Can I just have one bad thing? Just one? Just let me have my diet coke in peace.
This.
I went from soda, to caffeine free soda, to seltzer, to mostly just plain water. Took about 2 years, but it really feels better. Now drinking a soda is like drinking a glass of sugar water. 5f60172690...c981d2.jpg
Rubbish!! I went to Coke. Com & Pepsi. Com and they say that most adults are severely lacking Caramel Color #7 and we need to drink more.
Well, we aren't really LACKING but... You can get Caramel color #7 in other ways than Dr. Pepper and Coca Cola.
Load More Replies...I never really loved soda but cutting it out was the easiest and most effective start to losing weight and feeling better.
I switched to Zevia mostly now. It's pop (or Soda) that is sweetened by Stevia. 0 calories, 0 sugar and the Creamy Root Beer is 0 caffeine. Gives you the taste of pop without the sugar.
Blech, I am one of those 20% something who can truely taste sweetener in about anything. Leaves a weird pelty feeling on my tongue, even stevia. So I avoid those altogether. Good for all of you who can use stevia though!
Load More Replies...I switched to ginger beer. Better for your gut too. (non-alcoholic of course).
Uh no because first of all: how many sodas are you drinking, man? Everything in moderation and you'll be fine
Making a habit of being kind. Positivity that has the possibility of infinite growth.
I try to overpower mean people with kindness. If I'm dealing with a tough customer I'll dial up the "thank you" and "I'm glad you brought this to my attention" and "oh no, we must rectify this" and eventually they mellow out. Not a 10-10 strategy but works most of the time.
Be kind to customer service folks. They're doing a thankless task for which they are habitually verbally abused.
WWMRD: What Would Mister Rogers Do? Boy, do I miss him and I didn't even know him!
People just need to feel like their emotions have been heard. Then they are ready to move on to solutions.
You never know when people are barely hanging on. A kind word could literally save someone. It has done for me
Replacing items before they run out. E.g.. detergent, toilet paper, shampoo, etc.
My 4yo does this without ever being asked. I was shocked and amazed, thought I had bought magic toilet paper!
When I see something is getting low, I instantly go write it on the grocery list. Otherwise, I'd forget about it completely.
If you are going to be out of it in the next week, please put it on the shopping list.
Load More Replies...Unfortunately, they run out before I know it; I replace them BECAUSE they ran out.
That's why I always keep a spare - like a full bottle of shampoo, when the one in the shower is emty, I replace it with the full bottle and then go shopping for a new one. I which my boyfriend would understand this - because he only uses the things that are there, but never puts them on the shopping list. HATE it!
Load More Replies...I worked at a small office of 10 . All women. There was one woman who wouldn’t replace the toilet paper because “she didn’t do it at home”. But she was a “Christian”.
Some things I put on the shopping list as soon as I open a new jar/container.
A book a month
I have this problem sometimes, but it seems to be related to how much time I spend playing with my phone. Whenever I disconnect for a while, I usually find myself getting back into reading again
Load More Replies...Reading allowed me a much-needed escape from a difficult childhood, & it was MUCH healthier for me than other behaviors I could have chosen.
I can't fall asleep anymore unless I've read for at least an hour. It forces my worries out of my head and replaces them with involvement in the plot.
I can read a decent 500 page book in 3 hours or less....when I had a breakdown 12 years ago, I got through 50 books a week...buying them cheap from a charity shop, then re donating them when I'd read them
I wouldn't manage. I'd read one book a day if I had enough and wouldn't have to go to school
When I read every week I ignore all my other responsibilities. It's not good lol
Healthy eating. If you make it habitual, you look and feel a million times better than when you eat like c**p. You don't even crave c****y food often.
Made me smile! (edit for verb tense because I am grammatically stupid.)
Load More Replies...Unfortunately, far too many people eat c**p because it's cheaper than healthier options. They literally cannot afford to eat well.
To a point. My snack this morning will either be an apple or an orange. Cheaper by far than the vending machine or a drive through. People who spend time learning to cook over the years win b/c they can start with staple foods and make a meal for pennies compared to restaurants or even ready to heat meals from the grocery. Start making one thing once a week. Get good at it. Add a second recipe. Get good at it. Repeat adding even more recipes. YouTube and all the recipe apps help. Eventually so day off batch recipes.
Load More Replies...I've cut out soft drinks going on two and a half years now and I don't even miss it anymore.
6 months for me. Almost 5 years for my dad. It truly makes a difference its insane how much less you crave and how much better you generally feel without all that sugar. Good work DennyS.
Load More Replies...Wish I could AFFORD to eat healthier foods. With current price-gouging especially with food, yeah, that's not going to happen.
Even junk food has been hit with inflation. The choice is yours but there are still healthy options that are relatively affordable. If you're struggling that much get in touch with a food bank.

Meal planning.
You save so much more money if you pre-plan what you're going to eat for the week than if you wing it.
I really, really do wish I could do this but the problem is that my "appetite" isn't at all dependable and if I don't "have a taste for" what's already prepared, I won't eat it and so still have to cook something. I annoy my own self.
There's a big difference between meal planning and meal prep-ing. At the weekend, we sit down and discuss what we want to eat that week. Then we shop accordingly. This means we have the things in to make the chosen meals. I have a little blackboard in the kitchen, and write the names of the meals on the board. This makes cooking so much easier. We know there's food in the house to make all of the meals. There's no staring, empty-eyed, into an empty fridge and trying to work out what can be made.
Load More Replies...I live alone now, but I'm used to cooking for a large family. So I still make large main dishes, but then I freeze them in single-serving sizes. I have a rotating inventory to choose from, and it only takes two minutes or so to thaw in the microwave. I cook rice or pasta fresh, though.
I'm the opposite - I find that if I want to make sure nothing ever gets wasted, I just go to the store everyday and buy only what I need for the meal I feel like having at the moment.
It's a good idea, but some things just are cheaper if you buy them in bulk, or when their due date is about to expire.
Load More Replies...Tried meal planning to budget better and waste less food. We failed. I don't know what others are doing but meal prepping is hard.
My local supermarket is my pantry. I eat what vegetable or fruit is for sale that day. In a way my supermarket decides what I eat. I only cloose healthy options though. With my ADD, I can't plan.
Cooking for just you can be a serious challenge at times. Of course, the dog eats what I don't (no judging please) but I find myself getting delivery or skipping meals much more than I should.
Brushing your teeth, your smile look good, you save money and your health, benefits quite a lot from a healthy mouth.
Although some people just end up with problems no matter what they do. Teeth are weird. Some people need to brush more than twice a day but that's also not good.
Sometimes you end up with a dentist that does more harm than good.
Load More Replies...When you're finished, knock your toothbrush off the sink and meow. Otherwise, how would your human know you were finished?
I have always been fastidious about my teeth but still need extensive dental work because of years of acid erosion.
that cat is diligent abt its oral hygiene. i could learn something from it.
This is great advice but totally secondary to basic advice on how to correctly brush & floss - which literally nobody is taught & then people are left to pick up the pieces. Preventing is better than curing. It's amazing how the vast majority of people genuinely believe they're doing a good job when, in actual fact, they're usually just cleaning small areas of their teeth, missing the contact spaces between teeth, avoiding the gums & gumline & not brushing the (often smelly) build-up on their tongues. People with certain medical conditions (eg diabetes) also need to be extra thorough but nobody tells them that. As a dental professional, I do feel that there is a huge lack of public care & knowledge that, if taught from a young age, would prevent a vast array of dental issues & negate the need, in many cases, for a lot of treatments, including dentures.
Take the stairs, if you have a choice.
I believe the two disclaimers in this post ("whenever possible" and "if you have a choice") cover this quite throughly.
Load More Replies...I hate stairs...I have a bad hip and arthritic knees...it's very painful to take the stairs.
Unless your office building has stinky, moldy smelling carpeted stairs.
Doing dishes at night so I wake up to a clean sink and clean dishes. I live in a tiny studio and don’t have a dishwasher so this makes a big difference for me.
I do the dishes all day long. I'd rather wash a few items several times a day, than wash sinks full all at once. And you'll wake up to a neat kitchen with a clean sink and clean dishes.
It'd be nice if the people in my house went with that. Instead of everyone washing what they use after using it, it all gets piled up on the counter and ends up taking 20ish minutes to wash and dry with three people. It's horrible.
Load More Replies...When I lived by myself, I did them right after eating. I never had dishes piling up next to or in the sink. Now with a wife and two kids and a daycare running in our house that nicety is long gone.
I always do mine when I get home from work. I like to be completely lazy after dinner, and mornings are for pre work relaxing. But I have at least an hour to myself after work that's great for dishes and putting stuff away so I can relax in clean house later. It doesn't matter when you do it. What ever works for you
If you have a dishwasher this will cost so much more, wait until the dishwasher is full, people
Somewhere in Europe you pay a 10-cent deposit on all your beer bottles, my small habit of alcoholism gives me a nice return on bottles when I hand them in for recycling.
I hate paying the 10 cent deposit, but don't complain when I'm broke. The bottle/can money comes in handy.
Here in germany you also pay 25 Cents "pfand" for Plastik bottles and cans and 8cents for Glas beer bottles ..... every grocery store has an automate where you can give back your emty bottles and than you get your money back.
Years ago, we passed a bottle deposit law in my county in Virginia, but the bottle and drink industry took it to court and the state Supreme Court overturned it.
Load More Replies...In finland its 10c for glass, 15c for can and 20c for plastic bottles.
They talked about getting rid of the can/bottle refund in my state. If they did that a lot of people would no longer turn them in. There would be no point for them, no tangible reward.
If you don't like doing the returning, offer your bottles to the homeless. I'm homeless and every little bit helps.
Most things related to hygiene. Brushing teeth, showering daily, washing your clothes regularly. Hygiene is the #1 thing that the opposite sex cares about, and the first thing people notice.
Doesn't have to be any gender at all... Personally I'm not looking for any kind of romance. I would rather this was framed as doing something for ourselves than to attract a potential mate.
Load More Replies...You don't need to shower daily if you do not do anything physical or sweat excessively.
That’s an American thing. It’s not great for your skin.
Load More Replies...Showering daily is not recommended if you don"t need it. Our skin has a microbiome that defends us as well. If you must shower daily, you can try to only rinse a few times instead of a full body wash with soap every day.
Do not care 1 iota what other sex thinks. If I feel clean then that is enough for me.
You shouldn't shower daily, it disrupt your skins biome. There's tons of research into this.
I am handicapped and showering is a huge chore! I also have extremely dry skin that isn't solved with lotion and drinking plenty of water so I shower less frequently. I do, however shower before I am going to be in close quarters with people.
I attempted to be a game store nerd. Couldn't do it once I realized I quickly moved up the pecking order just because I had better hygiene than everyone around me. Also there were those few "unclean" you could smell right before they entered the building. I had to leave. Still like DnD though.
Eating a little less. You don’t even have to eat better, just leave 1/4-1/3 of your food on your plate. Get a smaller bowl of ice cream. Eat one less slice of pizza. Don’t eat all the fries. If everything else stays the same you’ll lose weight, and it’s a start towards being healthier.
If you use smaller plates, your portions will be smaller as well. Even if you "clean" your plate you'll have eaten less. It's ok to leave some food on your plate, regardless.
I've done weightwatchers for a year and one part is, to really listen to yourself when you're full. It took some time, but I really needed smaller portions. And this "theres only a few spoons full left, I'll finish it even when I'm full to have a clean plate" was hard to overcome. That's been a few years ago and I really should start working on that habit again ^^
Load More Replies...Don't leave 1/4 to 1/3 of the food on your plate. That's such a waste - prepare less food in the first place. Put less food on the plate.
Depends on the culture. In Japan, it's considered rude and wasteful to leave food on your plate. You also will not be allowed to take leftovers home. In China, leaving food on your plate means the host fed you enough and you liked the food because you ate until you were stuffed. So it depends on the culture.
I don't like this one. It's not fun to hear people telling you to eat less or stop eating when you only have one meal a day. It feels like you should just stop once and for all. I've lost 10kg since being on a diet and started eating more. But still struggle a lot with this sort of message.
If you're only eating one meal a day then this one isn't for you. I hope you're able to find what is healthy for you. We all have different needs when it comes to food and that's ok.
Load More Replies...I don't think it's ever a good idea to waste food. If you leave food on your plate, you ought to refrigerate it and eat it later. Do one better and just take smaller portions.
This is a really hard concept for those of use raised in "clean your plate" households. Hard, but not impossible. Just pretend that you can come back to "finish the plate" later as a snack, or call it a snack for tomorrow and go ahead and put it in the fridge.
Less carbs and sugars makes the biggest difference, for weight and for health.
Flossing. There are a lot of people who don't floss, but it's an important habit to get into. Once you start flossing, you'll feel gross when you don't do it.
For decades dentists have recommended flossing as an essential part of oral hygiene. But how useful is it really? An investigation by the Associated Press has revealed there is insufficient proof to back up this claim. The US Department for Health and Human Services and Agriculture admitted in a letter that the benefits of flossing had never been properly researched. A British dentist at the University of Birmingham, Prof Damien Walmsley, also said there is only "weak evidence" to suggest flossing is beneficial.
Isn't it common sense, though, that getting food out from between teeth (before it rots) just has to help?
Load More Replies...Flossing combats halitosis (bad breath). That gunk living between your teeth is literally rotting food.
...and plaque is made up of proteins and the excrement of bacteria. They're literally pooping in your mouth. If that's not a reason to keep your mouth clean, I don't know what is.
Load More Replies...I floss right before I go to the dentist or after eating corn on the cob. That's about it. No cavities for 40 years...
Genetics and geographical location during developmental years play a HUGE role in how susceptible one's gums and teeth are to decay and disease. When I began working in dentistry, it was wild to see that patients with identical hygiene can have dental health on polar opposite sides of the spectrum.
Load More Replies...I wonder if flossing depends on your teeth. I can not get floss between most of my teeth and my cleaning rituals would not suit others. I have a firm brush for after dinner, but use a soft brush in the morning and after work. At night, I have an electric brush, as I never seem to manage back teeth without. I don't floss. My husband brushes once a day and flosses once a week. I think we both have good teeth.
Sometimes, though, plaque can coat teeth to the point that even a painful setting of 7 won't get it all.
Load More Replies...Fun fact: the dance commonly knows as "the floss" was actually invented years ago, and was named "the mash potato"
But STOP DROPPING YOUR FLOSSERS ON THE GROUND they are everywhere and yuck, yuck yuck
Sleep well.
It isn't even the long run, the next morning you'll become 10x better.
Something you will hopefully rediscover in around 20 years.
Load More Replies...I’m trying, but even after I take a long nap or sleep well, I’m still so tired!
The thing is you need to rest in your sleep, or it doesn't matter. Sleep 8 hours, but you tossed and turned for 5 minutes every half hour to every hour? You're gonna feel like s**t. Sleep 6 hours but you were dead to the world and had no dreams you can remember? Better than 8 hours. The amount of sleep is essential, but the quality is much more important. And with how everything's going nowadays, not many are getting that quality. Me included.
+1, I started an anti seizure med and it's giving me vivid/semi lucid dreams. Sometimes they're dreams of a typical day at work or arguing with someone about something. I wake up frustrated, pissed off, and twice as tired. This isn't every night but ... I'm about to start smoking weed again to knock myself the f out at night.
Load More Replies...I've been taking a nap every day my whole long life.
Load More Replies...Ok, but how are you supposed to do it, I sleep a little bit, I feel terrible, I sleep for 12 hours, I feel terrible. The only way I figured of doing it is to stay up all night, then sleep the next, repeat forever.
Wearing daily face cream with sunscreen UV protection.
What do you all do about the eye burning? I sweat a lot and boy does it sting when it gets in my eyes.
Get baby sunscreen. The SPF is higher, it's less greasy, and it doesn't sting your eyes.
Load More Replies...Although I'd agree with wearing sunscreen if you're out in the sun a lot, this rule is ridiculous if you work inside all day. The sun gives you vitamin D in addition to UV rays, so a little sun exposure won't kill you.
As a melanoma survivor, I respectfully disagree with your comment.
Load More Replies...This really depends on where you live or what season it is. For instance, in the autumn most days are clouded anyway. And in wintertime it's hard enough to get vitamin D naturally where I live due to the angle of the sun in the atmosphere, it makes no sense to put sunscreen on the few exposed patches of skin I have.
The thing is… a very good one is very expensive for many, so we do our best "avoiding" UV
No way. I need my vitamin D and my body was built to deal with a moderate amount of sun. Sunscreen (any type of cream really) gives me pimples. I do use it when I am on the water, or in a tropical place.
Saving money.
I have lost count of how many people who got themselves into serious debt simply because they spend more than what's necessary.
Sometimes they get into serious debt trouble because what's necessary is more than they earn.
There's a difference between situational debt and personal (what I like to call irrational debt)
Load More Replies...Inflation and the cost of living is ridiculous now. The saying, "It's expensive to be poor" is so true. Everything going up, bills piling up, just hard to make it paycheck to paycheck now. Its not right. People can no longer afford ths basics in life. Its not fair. We deserve more we deserve to have a decent living too.
I have been very very poor. Luckily for me that was a time when I was young and single, I can't imagine with other mouths to feed. Now I am much better off than colleagues on the same pay, but having been poor I know why. It is NOT that they are spending more than is necessary. It is because I was lucky enough to go through a few years of plenty which let me buy all the things needed to live cheaply. Being able to afford quality items and efficient appliances means my bills are lower and I don't need to replace things. Being able to get ahead of needs by buying in bulk where there are discounts helps a lot. Being poor is very expensive. A lot of people who are financially comfortable assume that their weekly shop and other bills could be met on a low income. They are right, but the poor have to spend a lot more money to just survive.
Yes, sure, there are people out there who spend their money unwisely, frittering money away on things they don't really need when that money would be better put aside for future expenses. But for every fritterer out there, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of hard-working, thrifty folks who simply don't have enough money for the unavoidable, day-to-day living expenses they already have, many families going hungry or barely surviving on substandard foodstuffs, because they can't afford the healthy stuff their bodies need to function properly. How exactly are people supposed to put money aside, when in actual fact they are getting deeper and deeper into debt with each passing month, each serious illness or sudden health expense, each cheap appliance that keeps breaking down. I'm getting really tired of the people who are lucky enough to not know the absolute heartbreak and desperation of grinding, relentless poverty, telling us how to save the 'extra' money we simply don't have!
How could you save money if nearly 90% of my income already been used for basic things (rent, food, gas, etc)? And don't forget those unwanted things that can make you broke instantly.
I save as much as I can but inflation and earning less money has made it nearly impossible...just surviving is taking almost every penny.
Be prepared is maybe better. Your dishwasher/washing machine/boiler/furnace is older then 5 years? Make sure you have money to replace them. Are you having pets? Make sure you have money for medical care. Going on a holiday?? Make sure you have a little extra money to spend. Be prepared for uncertain circumstances.
Positively impact someone's day. And I think that's a small habit, because you don't have to do anything huge.
You could go really simple and just give a random, genuine compliment. "I like that jacket."
You could go slightly more advanced and compliment someone to someone else. "Man, Martha has been killing it lately with her work." There's a chance the compliment gets back to her. But even if not, you're boosting your image to the person you said that to, because of your willingness to compliment others.
You could do a slightly more advanced move like complimenting someone in the form of requesting their expertise. "Sam, you seem to really understand pivot tables in Excel. If you have time, do you mind showing me how they work?"
All 3 of those tactics are *slightly* manipulative, because you have to consciously manufacture those moments with regularity, at least at first. But they breed nothing but benefits. The other person feels better. You feel better. And you're easing that gap that separates people, unless one takes the initiative of lessening it.
I have always done this. Random compliments make people happy. I enjoy the responses more, I think, than they do the compliment. Even if I'm having a REALLY bad day, I will say something positive to someone. "Pretty dress.", or "I appreciate you." It makes the day a little less bad too. :)
I can't remember the last time someone complimented me on my dress.
Load More Replies...TL:DR It works! I learned this from observing my sister. She's the outgoing extrovert and I am the quiet introvert. While visiting her one summer as we were leaving the community where we were vacationing, she was greeting her neighbors. One of them came up to the car and told her that they noticed that she and her husband had been away and they went over to check on their house during the storm to make sure everything was settled. I asked her who they were and she said she didn't really know them they were just, "Hi. Hello. Waving", neighbors. Even though it is very awkward for me, I started doing the same. Nodding, greeting people especially those I saw daily. Kind words; a compliment. Man what a difference it makes. To my life. And hopefully to those I interact with. Overheard others talking about me, "Stuck up? Naw! She talks. She's nice, just quiet."
I had a patient today that complimented us on our smiles. He said that smile might be the only one he sees today and it means a lot.
Another thing I have decided to do, because I am about to make a major life change, is negative people just aren't going to be in my life anymore. I will be buying a new cellphone and purposely getting a new phone number. Of course it goes to businesses, medical and other important entities, but the only people who get the new number are people I want in my life. If they're a negative and critical person, out you go.
I get too anxious to... Besides I'm way too negative... Also because I'm too anxious to be positive
But not toxic positivity where you pretend everything's fine when it's not, or chastizing people when they express sorrow.
Except all of these can be entirely misconstrued. Random person walking up and telling you they like your jacket.... are they creepy stalkers? Is this a come on....are they distracting me so someone behind me can rob/stab/kidnap me? Are they just trying to start a conversation to ask for money or attack me themselves? Random comment from a coworker I don't really know or like.... are they being fake to sabotage me somehow? Trying to get something from me? Probably talking nicely to offset something horrible they said about me behind my back..... whatever happened to keeping to yourself?!?? That was by far the best policy for everyone to adopt, can we go back to that please.....
Regularly going to the gym and eating well. I wasn't skinny because of metabolism. I was skinny because I wasn't eating and exercising enough. I'm up 20 pounds since this time last year.
With exercising and eating healthy you "loose" fat cells and gain muscle cells. Those tend to weigh more than fat cells, so you gain weight, but you are slimmer. Sad fact: the fat cells don't just go away, they are only emptied of the stored fat, so when you stop exercising and start up bad eating habits, they fill up again in no time. Voilà: here we have the yo-yo effect.
That's interesting. Do you make more fat cells when you eat a lot, or is everybody born with the number of fat cells that they have?

False, I'm a skinny guy that has done everything safe to gain weight and nothing works.
Mine is less sugar intake. The amount that most people eat is really disruptive to our bodies. Instead of getting that ice cream, get a yogurt or fruit. :)
Does anyone else get this insane craving for sugar when you eat it after not having ate it for a while? (Terrible sentence.)
Yup! It drags you back down to its sticky, sickly lair at the first taste of the forbidden drug! My downfall is chocolate; it has a control over me that I simply cannot break, I eat only small amounts of the poison, only +70%, unsweetened or naturally sweetened when I can (it costs 2-3 times as much as the 'regular' stuff!), but just one little taste of the good stuff and I'm right back under its' spell. Damn chocolate! Hate the stuff! ... Love the stuff! .. Hate... Love...Urgggg!
Load More Replies...I went years thinking sugar was evil, and would only ever consume very little of it. And I always wondered why I had no energy and couldn't gain any weight. It finally got bad enough that I was able to figure out I'm hypoglycemic. I realized sugar wasn't evil, and that I actually need it. I have tons of energy, now, and am probably healthier than I've ever been.
Maybe you were just underfed. You do not need sugar when you eat complex carbohydrates like brown bread, potato, rise, pasta.
Load More Replies...Apples, pineapple, grapes and watermelon all have more sugar than ice cream
Yes but it's smaller ratio to the other nutrients
Load More Replies...Sugar was harder for me to quit than smoking, but OMG I noticed the difference when I succeeded! It's said to be more addictive than cocaine & I can believe it.
It is actually, it contains high levels of protein and nutrients that get filled when seasoning or flavor is added.
Load More Replies...There's a pretty high amount of sugar in a lot of fruit. There's more sugar in an apple (19g) than there is in a Hershey candy bar (17g).
Wake up at the same time. Every. Single. Day. Even on weekends. You stop waking up tired and start waking up naturally before your alarm.
Yes, I’m well aware this doesn’t work for everyone.
I do this every so often but then insomnia kicks in and destroys my sleep schedule and then I have to spend a weekend trying to correct it.
There are many solutions to insomnia to be found on the internet. Keep experimenting until you find what works for you.

Whaaaaaaaat? I feel terribly sorry for the people who wake up at the same time every day. It's a curse to not be able to sleep in when you don't have to wake up.
Listen to your body. Everyone has different sleep needs, & what works for me may not work for you.
I wake up at 6.00 every day for school, there is no way in hell I'm getting up at that time on the weekend.
Budget your money.
That is the only solid way I know to get "rich" quick.
The only way to get 'rich quick' is to inherit, or win a big prize.
But... But... The nice man told.me over a folding table in that old radio shack if I show my friends and family these neat scissors that cut pennies in half I'd be a millionaire!
Load More Replies...Another point here though is that if you have to budget, you're not going to get rich quick. It's like that budgeting and saving tip on the millionaire thread a few days back. Most of us could save up our entire paycheck, never spend a cent and we'll still never end up rich.
I just can not live on instant ramen and just vegetate for 3 years so I can go on a holiday once, I just can't.
Right? I don't have to budget a holiday because there's no way I'd be able to take one

The concept of no zero days. On days when I'm feeling lazy and unproductive, I try to do something even if it's as simple reading or cleaning my room for 5 minutes.
Resting is being productive. Once you let go of thinking doing nothing is "lazy and productive" and allowing yourself to have a nap, just sit around and listen to the silence, you'll feel less guilty and destressed.
Exaclty! I was exhausted for years because whenever I took a little time to do nothing, I would feel like I should be spending my time more productively (in a leisure sense). The advice from this post is what's making our society so damn anxious all the time, and I would even call it toxic.
Load More Replies...It's okay spending your whole day on the coach, when you can afford it, doing absolutely nothing productive.Don't let you guilt-trip by this insane you-have-to-do-something-worthy s.h.i.t. If you feel like, your day off has to be a coach-day, than go for it, your body needs recovering.
Even a machine needs to cooldown, so do you. After days of hard work it's a good thing to reward yourself by doing nothing. Ask the best fitness trainer in the world, they will say that you need to rest as well, both mentally and physically.
I have to plan and defend my zero days because they never happen. It's okay to rest too
I actually make it a point to take the occasional veg day. No chores aside from the "gotta do" ones.... feeding my animals & myself, doing my dishes, scooping the cat box. The next day I'm raring to go again.
This is stupid, I love and long for my, as you call it, Zero Days. I can do more work and cleaning one day just to have a zero day the next day. For me personally those days saves my mental health.
Making your bed in the morning. It takes 3 minutes, and it makes your room look neat and presentable, as well as giving you the feeling that you accomplished something for the day. It's easy from there to just let that productive feeling snowball into being productive in other areas in your life.
I don't care. It is a waste of premium morning time and I don't feel any different if it is made. It only gets made if company will be over so we look like we have our act together.
Researcher Dr Stephen Pretlove said: "We know that mites can only survive by taking in water from the atmosphere using small glands on the outside of their body. "Something as simple as leaving a bed unmade during the day can remove moisture from the sheets and mattress so the mites will dehydrate and eventually die."
Load More Replies...Except people sweat at night, and if you cover it all up, it just seals in the moisture and takes it longer to dry. Mold spores love that. Also, exposing the sheets to air and sunlight helps kill dust mites. Making the bed is a great way to make your allergies worse.
Bed bugs actually thrive in a neatly made bed. It gives a large warm area for them to lay eggs and, if the sheets are moist from sweating, the longer they stay damp, the more bed bugs develop.
Nope, I rise I fold my duvet all the way back so everything can air, open my windows and it stays that way until I get back in it at night.
I leave it unmade for a few hours with the windows opened even if it's freezing outside. Can't stand the "sleep" smell in the bedroom!
We don't make bed in the morning we let it air out/dry out. It prevents it from smell and bacteria growth, some people sweat more than others. Unmade bed can still look nice tho ☺️
Science says you shouldn't make your bed in the morning. Doing so creates a warm, moist environment for dust mites. Leaving it open exposes dust mites to light and air.
If something needs to be done, *just do it.* Most people spend more time whining about work, whether household chores or employment related tasks, than if they'd just get in there and do it. Work and productivity is not the earth-shattering concept most people, of all ages, act like it is and no type of honest work is beneath anyone. Bathrooms are dirty at your high school job? Volunteer to do it. Your roommates not cleaning the common areas? Suck it up and do it or it'll just get worse because they won't do it regardless. Short-staffed at your adult job? Stay the extra thirty minutes to cover a task when everyone else acts like its moving mountains to do so.
After a while, you'll find there's a lot of personal satisfaction that can be found in this productivity for very little lost time in the big picture. Maybe you can only watch one episode on Netflix tonight instead of two for getting something done - so what? No, it's not always going to be fair, just like nothing else in life will be either. But, you can confidently say that you are humble enough and willing enough to take ownership and pride in your piece of the world when virtually no one else does the same. And in the end, it will be noticed by the right people. You will have better friends, better relationships, and better treated as an employee because genuine people in all of these categories know just how rare this trait is in a sea of total mediocrity. And there's no special skills required, just an open attitude you can start today with at any age.
I strongly disagree with this one. It is not my responsibility to do someone else's job or take care of their messes. I take absolutely no pride in doing menial chores. My house is clean because it has to be in order for me to live in it. I have lots of good habits, but it doesn't mean I like doing any of it. If my friends see my house a bit messy, they feel bad that I had a busy week. They're not suddenly worse friends, and if they did behave that way, we wouldn't be friends because I don't need that kind of toxicity in my life. I am a good employee, but I don't do extra. I don't get paid to do extra. I do what I need to, and I do it well. I am not mediocre. I just don't puff my chest out for doing normal tasks and what is expected of me. That's what it means to be humble. Not whatever this is.
I think both of you are right. I've found that in jobs where I feel like I'm part of a team, I pitch in and go the extra mile and feel good about it. But I see your point about setting boundaries and not letting yourself be taken advantage of. Doing your job and doing it well is a source of pride, too.
Load More Replies...Enh. I used to be the only woman at my office, and I took it on myself to clean the kitchen and do other little chores that nobody else would do. At first I felt good about it, but over time as I realized it wasn't being noticed at all, I started to get resentful.
No appreciation, no gratitude and once you stop people expect it from you perpetually.
Load More Replies...This one seems like propaganda by big corporate to get you to do more without being compensated fairly and enjoy life less. Watch one less episode of Netflix? What are you, a robot?!
Stay 30 minutes after work? Corporate will love all that free work you're donating. Maybe 50 or 60 years ago you might have been recognized, but not today.
Load More Replies...You sound like a manager who says that money is not the only reason people should come to work. True, the advice above is how the world used to work, but it is no longer the case.
Just be cautious of those who would take advantage of you for this...
As a parent, getting my kid to do her chores is an absolute pain and it would be so much easier to just do them myself. But then we'd go to all those Gen Z posts about how entitled kids are and don't do any work. No, don't do work that isn't yours unless you're getting paid. Your labor has value.
Why do the work for someone else? When they notice they will leave their work for you.
Making an account cause this is so wrong. This will only make you a doormat. Your relationships will all take advantage of you. I know this from experience.
This suggestion is b******t and also rude. You're asking people to suck it up and do other people's chores? To hell with that. The more you do the more they're gonna take advantage of you. And when it comes to work, if you're efficient you're punished with more work. So don't have to be so extra. If you drop dead your company will replace you within days. So enjoy your life and show middle finger to people who ask you to "work hard".
Pay attention to your goddamn money. As a Canadian, Tim Horton's once or twice a day doesn't seem so bad. It's not like Starbucks, where a large coffee can cost you like 8 bucks after tax, an extra large is only 2.20 after tax. So I recently was tired of being both overweight and cash poor. Despite being technically at the lowest income bracket, we always had money for food and clothes for our family, but things like $400 for a new bed and mattress for our kid was something to consider and save up for for a few pays. I was sick of it. So I logged into my banking app. And I added up all the Tim Horton's transactions from March 23rd all the way back to the beginning of March. Just to see how much of my pay went to them. Now, I'll admit , I had a real problem. My once or twice a day, turns out, was just as often ***four or five times a day.*** Two f*****g hundred and m***********g eighty-goddamned-seven f****d up dollars later and I was only at March 10th or so. I couldn't go through with it and finish. I was ashamed. And I hadn't even told anyone at that point. So I dropped it. Cold turkey. Got caffeine pills to deal with the withdrawals. Since then I have paid all my bills early, including rent, seen my savings account inflate from ~70 to almost $400, bought that bed, and I **still** had three digits before the decimal in chequing when my last two pays rolled around. That never happened before. I would either scrape by with 50ish, or even overdraft. Every. Single. Pay. So yeah, go look and add up your worst vice. Imagine having *that* much extra in your pocket every single month. It might just be worth giving it up. - Sidebar: I have lost ***over f*****g 23 pounds*** since March 9th, mainly because I am not consuming ***~1000 - 1800 calories from coffee alone.*** To be fair, I also stopped hitting all other fast food places and am definitely eating less overall, because part of my issue and breaking point was the weight, not just the money. So that 20lbs of weightloss is not to be expected for everyone unless they are also purposefully trying to lose weight.
Even if your "vice" is one candy bar a day, that could be $50/month you'd save.
You don't have to give up your 'vice' completely. Make it a once-a-week treat. Instead of a daily chocolate bar, make it a weekly 'Celebratory Wednesday chocolate bar'.
I have a full sugary coffee once a fortnight, the other days just a homemade black coffee (with sugar free syrup if I'm feeling specially fancy). Balance is key and treats are important, as long as they're *treats*, not an everyday staple
Load More Replies...My bank has something you can add to your banking. It's called "Nomi". It keeps track of the percentage you are spending in different areas of your life. There aren't a lot of categories right now, but they are adding more. At least you can keep track of those areas. It lists everything you have purchased in a month so you can see that. It compares your spending each month for 5 months at a time. You can see each month if your output is greater than income. You set a spending limit for each month and they send you an alert when you're close to reaching it. Best of all (and of course you are expected to check your account balance) but where Nomi sees you have enough money to do this, it automatically takes $75 out of your account and deposits in your savings. If you need to change the amount you can. This has been amazing in my ability to keep track of everything. When I check my savings account it is shocking how much I have saved.
This reminds me the short, short time I worked at a high-pressured sales job. Sitting in a lecture the manager went on about how people will just spend hundreds or thousands on impulse items and little luxuries every year. Including giving his own example of spending $300 a year on gum. I'm not gonna get into rest of the c**p they said. But it made me think about all the frivolous things we buy that we don't really need and only think we want.
What?? 100ml black coffee has about 8kj (2kcal), with milk 24kj (6ckal), with sugar 40kj (10kcal). So how the heck does one save 1000-1800 kcal by quitting coffee?? And I guess by calories OP means kilocalories, doesn't make any sense otherwise.
Fancy coffee has cream, syrup and sugar all the works.

Learning everyone's name at work.
Once they stick, you'll be like glue in the workplace. It's impossible to get rid of the guy everybody loves without destroying the camaraderie.
To me, this is just basic respect. Learn the names of people with whom you spend time. I teach in a sports program (youths and adults), and it bothers me that some of the other instructors barely remember each others' names, let alone the names of the students. Learning their names tells other people that you see them as individuals, and not just a body taking up space. Learn their names, and make sure you're pronouncing them correctly. Also, ask if they prefer to be called something else. "Michael" might actually want to be called "Buckethead", his childhood nickname. You never know.
If it's a work colleague, they'll have to go a lot further than just learning my name. I'd rather work with someone reliable that doesn't know my name than with someone who can't get anything done right yet knows my name.
Reading every day, even if it’s just 20 pages.
Pick a room in your house (I chose bathroom) and every time you exit that room, do X number (I do 20) of push-ups, sit ups, whatever. I thought it seemed odd when my buddy told me he did this but after a bit you notice some changes.
I would most definitely choose the Ballroom, Observatory or Billiards room.
You know what else you do? You start avoiding that room subconsciously...

This is backed by science. Smiling, even if it's a fake smile, causes your brain to produce endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine (the happy brain chemicals). I have major depressive disorder, and this Jedi mind trick is very helpful.
Same! Sometimes when I’m having a bad moment, putting a smile on suddenly softens the edges of everything. It’s like your brain automatically starts thinking from a more positive side rather than catastrophizing.

Every day I try to do 15 minutes of tiding, which mostly works.
