This is optimal, but for other people who have an aversion to water, for whatever reason: just stay hydrated. Whatever it is you will drink, drink plenty of it. Eat foods with high water contents. Keep an eye on what you're drinking, and the possible effects, but your body will function marginally better on six sodas and three cups of coffee than it does on a begrudgingly choked down bottle of water.

Although my adult son says water has no taste, I don't like the taste. So I put a little fresh lemon juice in it. It's also good for health.

I have a hard time drinking enough water for sensory reasons but replacing it with homemade, unsweetened, decaf iced tea is flavorful enough and doesn't have the usual issues.

I know I'm weird, but I absolutely can't drink water while eating. I do drink plenty of water, whenever I'm just thirsty, if I wake up at night etc, but during meals I can't. I find it horrible with food, when I'm eating I need either cocacola, iced tea or fruit juice

LOL Once you cut out all that sweet, fizzy pop and sweet, sweet juice once you drink all that again after a long hiatus you'll wonder how you were able to ingest it and be able to taste all the types of sugar they cram in those drinks. If I really want juice, I dilute tf out of it.

For some reason I really felt like coke the other day (I haven't had one in years) and I swear I had to squeeze half a lemon to drink a small glass of the stuff. Instead of juice I recommend squeezing some grapefruit + mint leaves into a sparkling water.

30 Small Habits That Have A Significant Impact On Daily Life, According To Folks In This Online Group Getting into the habit of saying please and thank you. I’ve seen endless horror stories about people in retail getting sh*t on by ungrateful and rude customers, so I made a resolve to try and be as amicable and cooperative whenever I can. And it really made a difference. It really helps smooth things along when both people are working together to get things done as efficiently as possible. It’s a great feeling helping make someone’s day easier. Goes to show a little bit of kindness goes a long way.

This needs to be #1. I've worked retail and food service off-and-on for many years and I got all kinds of people. I will always be grateful to the customers that showed patience and kindness towards me. I do what I can to pay that forward because, unfortunately, these employees are still getting the short end of the stick because certain customers feel its okay to take their negative emotions out on minimum wage workers.

For me it feels like absolut standard to say please and thank you - and be nice in general. What would you say from your experience - what percentage is nice. I know it's always the terrible people that stand out more. I had the hope, that still most people trend to be nice. But also I've never worked in service, just at the hotline of a small IT company.

(This helps immeasurably with in-laws.) 2) knowing when to keep your mouth shut. Started off doing about 45 minutes a night, 6 days a week, now I'm up to about 1 to 1 1/2 hours a night, plus I started roller skating for about an hour and a half to two hours once a week and it has definitely helped me lose weight. I lost about 30 pounds since last summer and am about 15 or so pounds from my goal. It's a very steady pace and I am very happy with my results.

If you see something that needs doing that will take 2 minutes or less; go ahead and do it. Put away those clothes. Pick up that toy as you walk by. Empty that dish washer when you go to get a drink. Scoop the litterbox when you go to take a p**s. Things will stay neater, you'll be more organized, and you'll find you have more time in the long run for stuff you want to do, instead of having to take care of stuff you've been putting off.

Washing a couple cups and a bit of silverware while waiting for the coffee to brew or, like you, the kettle to boil, doesn't take any more time than, well, waiting for the coffee to brew/kettle to boil. Might not finish all the stuff in the sink but hey, after while you're gonna want another cuppa...

I try to overpower mean people with kindness. If I'm dealing with a tough customer I'll dial up the "thank you" and "I'm glad you brought this to my attention" and "oh no, we must rectify this" and eventually they mellow out. Not a 10-10 strategy but works most of the time.

To a point. My snack this morning will either be an apple or an orange. Cheaper by far than the vending machine or a drive through. People who spend time learning to cook over the years win b/c they can start with staple foods and make a meal for pennies compared to restaurants or even ready to heat meals from the grocery. Start making one thing once a week. Get good at it. Add a second recipe. Get good at it. Repeat adding even more recipes. YouTube and all the recipe apps help. Eventually so day off batch recipes.

There's a big difference between meal planning and meal prep-ing. At the weekend, we sit down and discuss what we want to eat that week. Then we shop accordingly. This means we have the things in to make the chosen meals. I have a little blackboard in the kitchen, and write the names of the meals on the board. This makes cooking so much easier. We know there's food in the house to make all of the meals. There's no staring, empty-eyed, into an empty fridge and trying to work out what can be made.

I live alone now, but I'm used to cooking for a large family. So I still make large main dishes, but then I freeze them in single-serving sizes. I have a rotating inventory to choose from, and it only takes two minutes or so to thaw in the microwave. I cook rice or pasta fresh, though.

This is great advice but totally secondary to basic advice on how to correctly brush & floss - which literally nobody is taught & then people are left to pick up the pieces. Preventing is better than curing. It's amazing how the vast majority of people genuinely believe they're doing a good job when, in actual fact, they're usually just cleaning small areas of their teeth, missing the contact spaces between teeth, avoiding the gums & gumline & not brushing the (often smelly) build-up on their tongues. People with certain medical conditions (eg diabetes) also need to be extra thorough but nobody tells them that. As a dental professional, I do feel that there is a huge lack of public care & knowledge that, if taught from a young age, would prevent a vast array of dental issues & negate the need, in many cases, for a lot of treatments, including dentures.

Showering daily is not recommended if you don"t need it. Our skin has a microbiome that defends us as well. If you must shower daily, you can try to only rinse a few times instead of a full body wash with soap every day.

You don’t even have to eat better, just leave 1/4-1/3 of your food on your plate. Get a smaller bowl of ice cream. Eat one less slice of pizza. Don’t eat all the fries. I've done weightwatchers for a year and one part is, to really listen to yourself when you're full. It took some time, but I really needed smaller portions. And this "theres only a few spoons full left, I'll finish it even when I'm full to have a clean plate" was hard to overcome. That's been a few years ago and I really should start working on that habit again ^^

Depends on the culture. In Japan, it's considered rude and wasteful to leave food on your plate. You also will not be allowed to take leftovers home. In China, leaving food on your plate means the host fed you enough and you liked the food because you ate until you were stuffed. So it depends on the culture.

For decades dentists have recommended flossing as an essential part of oral hygiene. But how useful is it really? An investigation by the Associated Press has revealed there is insufficient proof to back up this claim. The US Department for Health and Human Services and Agriculture admitted in a letter that the benefits of flossing had never been properly researched. A British dentist at the University of Birmingham, Prof Damien Walmsley, also said there is only "weak evidence" to suggest flossing is beneficial.

Genetics and geographical location during developmental years play a HUGE role in how susceptible one's gums and teeth are to decay and disease. When I began working in dentistry, it was wild to see that patients with identical hygiene can have dental health on polar opposite sides of the spectrum.

I wonder if flossing depends on your teeth. I can not get floss between most of my teeth and my cleaning rituals would not suit others. I have a firm brush for after dinner, but use a soft brush in the morning and after work. At night, I have an electric brush, as I never seem to manage back teeth without. I don't floss. My husband brushes once a day and flosses once a week. I think we both have good teeth.

The thing is you need to rest in your sleep, or it doesn't matter. Sleep 8 hours, but you tossed and turned for 5 minutes every half hour to every hour? You're gonna feel like s**t. Sleep 6 hours but you were dead to the world and had no dreams you can remember? Better than 8 hours. The amount of sleep is essential, but the quality is much more important. And with how everything's going nowadays, not many are getting that quality. Me included.

Although I'd agree with wearing sunscreen if you're out in the sun a lot, this rule is ridiculous if you work inside all day. The sun gives you vitamin D in addition to UV rays, so a little sun exposure won't kill you.

This really depends on where you live or what season it is. For instance, in the autumn most days are clouded anyway. And in wintertime it's hard enough to get vitamin D naturally where I live due to the angle of the sun in the atmosphere, it makes no sense to put sunscreen on the few exposed patches of skin I have.

I have been very very poor. Luckily for me that was a time when I was young and single, I can't imagine with other mouths to feed. Now I am much better off than colleagues on the same pay, but having been poor I know why. It is NOT that they are spending more than is necessary. It is because I was lucky enough to go through a few years of plenty which let me buy all the things needed to live cheaply. Being able to afford quality items and efficient appliances means my bills are lower and I don't need to replace things. Being able to get ahead of needs by buying in bulk where there are discounts helps a lot. Being poor is very expensive. A lot of people who are financially comfortable assume that their weekly shop and other bills could be met on a low income. They are right, but the poor have to spend a lot more money to just survive.

Yes, sure, there are people out there who spend their money unwisely, frittering money away on things they don't really need when that money would be better put aside for future expenses. But for every fritterer out there, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of hard-working, thrifty folks who simply don't have enough money for the unavoidable, day-to-day living expenses they already have, many families going hungry or barely surviving on substandard foodstuffs, because they can't afford the healthy stuff their bodies need to function properly. How exactly are people supposed to put money aside, when in actual fact they are getting deeper and deeper into debt with each passing month, each serious illness or sudden health expense, each cheap appliance that keeps breaking down. I'm getting really tired of the people who are lucky enough to not know the absolute heartbreak and desperation of grinding, relentless poverty, telling us how to save the 'extra' money we simply don't have!

Be prepared is maybe better. Your dishwasher/washing machine/boiler/furnace is older then 5 years? Make sure you have money to replace them. Are you having pets? Make sure you have money for medical care. Going on a holiday?? Make sure you have a little extra money to spend. Be prepared for uncertain circumstances.

30 Small Habits That Have A Significant Impact On Daily Life, According To Folks In This Online Group Positively impact someone's day. And I think that's a small habit, because you don't have to do anything huge. You could go really simple and just give a random, genuine compliment. "I like that jacket." You could go slightly more advanced and compliment someone to someone else. "Man, Martha has been killing it lately with her work." There's a chance the compliment gets back to her. But even if not, you're boosting your image to the person you said that to, because of your willingness to compliment others. You could do a slightly more advanced move like complimenting someone in the form of requesting their expertise. "Sam, you seem to really understand pivot tables in Excel. If you have time, do you mind showing me how they work?" All 3 of those tactics are *slightly* manipulative, because you have to consciously manufacture those moments with regularity, at least at first. But they breed nothing but benefits. The other person feels better. You feel better. And you're easing that gap that separates people, unless one takes the initiative of lessening it.

While visiting her one summer as we were leaving the community where we were vacationing, she was greeting her neighbors. One of them came up to the car and told her that they noticed that she and her husband had been away and they went over to check on their house during the storm to make sure everything was settled. I asked her who they were and she said she didn't really know them they were just, "Hi. Hello. Waving", neighbors. Even though it is very awkward for me, I started doing the same. Nodding, greeting people especially those I saw daily. Kind words; a compliment. Man what a difference it makes. To my life. And hopefully to those I interact with. Overheard others talking about me, "Stuck up? Naw! She talks. She's nice, just quiet."

I regularly compliment people on their clothing, jewelry, eyes, just whatever I like about them. Everyone likes a compliment and it makes them smile because I genuinely mean it.

Another thing I have decided to do, because I am about to make a major life change, is negative people just aren't going to be in my life anymore. I will be buying a new cellphone and purposely getting a new phone number. Of course it goes to businesses, medical and other important entities, but the only people who get the new number are people I want in my life. If they're a negative and critical person, out you go.

Except all of these can be entirely misconstrued. Random person walking up and telling you they like your jacket.... are they creepy stalkers? Is this a come on....are they distracting me so someone behind me can rob/stab/kidnap me? Are they just trying to start a conversation to ask for money or attack me themselves? Random comment from a coworker I don't really know or like.... are they being fake to sabotage me somehow? Trying to get something from me? Probably talking nicely to offset something horrible they said about me behind my back..... whatever happened to keeping to yourself?!?? That was by far the best policy for everyone to adopt, can we go back to that please.....

With exercising and eating healthy you "loose" fat cells and gain muscle cells. Those tend to weigh more than fat cells, so you gain weight, but you are slimmer. Sad fact: the fat cells don't just go away, they are only emptied of the stored fat, so when you stop exercising and start up bad eating habits, they fill up again in no time. Voilà: here we have the yo-yo effect.

That's interesting. Do you make more fat cells when you eat a lot, or is everybody born with the number of fat cells that they have?

Yup! It drags you back down to its sticky, sickly lair at the first taste of the forbidden drug! My downfall is chocolate; it has a control over me that I simply cannot break, I eat only small amounts of the poison, only +70%, unsweetened or naturally sweetened when I can (it costs 2-3 times as much as the 'regular' stuff!), but just one little taste of the good stuff and I'm right back under its' spell. Damn chocolate! Hate the stuff! ... Love the stuff! .. Hate... Love...Urgggg!

I went years thinking sugar was evil, and would only ever consume very little of it. And I always wondered why I had no energy and couldn't gain any weight. It finally got bad enough that I was able to figure out I'm hypoglycemic. I realized sugar wasn't evil, and that I actually need it. I have tons of energy, now, and am probably healthier than I've ever been.

Researcher Dr Stephen Pretlove said: "We know that mites can only survive by taking in water from the atmosphere using small glands on the outside of their body. "Something as simple as leaving a bed unmade during the day can remove moisture from the sheets and mattress so the mites will dehydrate and eventually die."

Except people sweat at night, and if you cover it all up, it just seals in the moisture and takes it longer to dry. Mold spores love that. Also, exposing the sheets to air and sunlight helps kill dust mites. Making the bed is a great way to make your allergies worse.

Bed bugs actually thrive in a neatly made bed. It gives a large warm area for them to lay eggs and, if the sheets are moist from sweating, the longer they stay damp, the more bed bugs develop.

30 Small Habits That Have A Significant Impact On Daily Life, According To Folks In This Online Group If something needs to be done, *just do it.* Most people spend more time whining about work, whether household chores or employment related tasks, than if they'd just get in there and do it. Work and productivity is not the earth-shattering concept most people, of all ages, act like it is and no type of honest work is beneath anyone. Bathrooms are dirty at your high school job? Volunteer to do it. Your roommates not cleaning the common areas? Suck it up and do it or it'll just get worse because they won't do it regardless. Short-staffed at your adult job? Stay the extra thirty minutes to cover a task when everyone else acts like its moving mountains to do so. After a while, you'll find there's a lot of personal satisfaction that can be found in this productivity for very little lost time in the big picture. Maybe you can only watch one episode on Netflix tonight instead of two for getting something done - so what? No, it's not always going to be fair, just like nothing else in life will be either. But, you can confidently say that you are humble enough and willing enough to take ownership and pride in your piece of the world when virtually no one else does the same. And in the end, it will be noticed by the right people. You will have better friends, better relationships, and better treated as an employee because genuine people in all of these categories know just how rare this trait is in a sea of total mediocrity. And there's no special skills required, just an open attitude you can start today with at any age.

I strongly disagree with this one. It is not my responsibility to do someone else's job or take care of their messes. I take absolutely no pride in doing menial chores. My house is clean because it has to be in order for me to live in it. I have lots of good habits, but it doesn't mean I like doing any of it. If my friends see my house a bit messy, they feel bad that I had a busy week. They're not suddenly worse friends, and if they did behave that way, we wouldn't be friends because I don't need that kind of toxicity in my life. I am a good employee, but I don't do extra. I don't get paid to do extra. I do what I need to, and I do it well. I am not mediocre. I just don't puff my chest out for doing normal tasks and what is expected of me. That's what it means to be humble. Not whatever this is.

I think both of you are right. I've found that in jobs where I feel like I'm part of a team, I pitch in and go the extra mile and feel good about it. But I see your point about setting boundaries and not letting yourself be taken advantage of. Doing your job and doing it well is a source of pride, too.

This one seems like propaganda by big corporate to get you to do more without being compensated fairly and enjoy life less. Watch one less episode of Netflix? What are you, a robot?!

Stay 30 minutes after work? Corporate will love all that free work you're donating. Maybe 50 or 60 years ago you might have been recognized, but not today.

You sound like a manager who says that money is not the only reason people should come to work. True, the advice above is how the world used to work, but it is no longer the case.

As a parent, getting my kid to do her chores is an absolute pain and it would be so much easier to just do them myself. But then we'd go to all those Gen Z posts about how entitled kids are and don't do any work. No, don't do work that isn't yours unless you're getting paid. Your labor has value.

Making an account cause this is so wrong. This will only make you a doormat. Your relationships will all take advantage of you. I know this from experience.

This suggestion is b******t and also rude. You're asking people to suck it up and do other people's chores? To hell with that. The more you do the more they're gonna take advantage of you. And when it comes to work, if you're efficient you're punished with more work. So don't have to be so extra. If you drop dead your company will replace you within days. So enjoy your life and show middle finger to people who ask you to "work hard".

Pay attention to your goddamn money. As a Canadian, Tim Horton's once or twice a day doesn't seem so bad. It's not like Starbucks, where a large coffee can cost you like 8 bucks after tax, an extra large is only 2.20 after tax. So I recently was tired of being both overweight and cash poor. Despite being technically at the lowest income bracket, we always had money for food and clothes for our family, but things like $400 for a new bed and mattress for our kid was something to consider and save up for for a few pays. I was sick of it. So I logged into my banking app. And I added up all the Tim Horton's transactions from March 23rd all the way back to the beginning of March. Just to see how much of my pay went to them. Now, I'll admit , I had a real problem. My once or twice a day, turns out, was just as often ***four or five times a day.*** Two f*****g hundred and m***********g eighty-goddamned-seven f****d up dollars later and I was only at March 10th or so. I couldn't go through with it and finish. I was ashamed. And I hadn't even told anyone at that point. So I dropped it. Cold turkey. Got caffeine pills to deal with the withdrawals. Since then I have paid all my bills early, including rent, seen my savings account inflate from ~70 to almost $400, bought that bed, and I **still** had three digits before the decimal in chequing when my last two pays rolled around. That never happened before. I would either scrape by with 50ish, or even overdraft. Every. Single. Pay. So yeah, go look and add up your worst vice. Imagine having *that* much extra in your pocket every single month. It might just be worth giving it up. - Sidebar: I have lost ***over f*****g 23 pounds*** since March 9th, mainly because I am not consuming ***~1000 - 1800 calories from coffee alone.*** To be fair, I also stopped hitting all other fast food places and am definitely eating less overall, because part of my issue and breaking point was the weight, not just the money. So that 20lbs of weightloss is not to be expected for everyone unless they are also purposefully trying to lose weight.

Even if your "vice" is one candy bar a day, that could be $50/month you'd save.

You don't have to give up your 'vice' completely. Make it a once-a-week treat. Instead of a daily chocolate bar, make it a weekly 'Celebratory Wednesday chocolate bar'.

I have a full sugary coffee once a fortnight, the other days just a homemade black coffee (with sugar free syrup if I'm feeling specially fancy). Balance is key and treats are important, as long as they're *treats*, not an everyday staple

My bank has something you can add to your banking. It's called "Nomi". It keeps track of the percentage you are spending in different areas of your life. There aren't a lot of categories right now, but they are adding more. At least you can keep track of those areas. It lists everything you have purchased in a month so you can see that. It compares your spending each month for 5 months at a time. You can see each month if your output is greater than income. You set a spending limit for each month and they send you an alert when you're close to reaching it. Best of all (and of course you are expected to check your account balance) but where Nomi sees you have enough money to do this, it automatically takes $75 out of your account and deposits in your savings. If you need to change the amount you can. This has been amazing in my ability to keep track of everything. When I check my savings account it is shocking how much I have saved.

This reminds me the short, short time I worked at a high-pressured sales job. Sitting in a lecture the manager went on about how people will just spend hundreds or thousands on impulse items and little luxuries every year. Including giving his own example of spending $300 a year on gum. I'm not gonna get into rest of the c**p they said. But it made me think about all the frivolous things we buy that we don't really need and only think we want.

I go to university by bus every day, without travel card I would spend 5€ per day, more than 100€ per month, with card 3€ per day The plus side is in the school cafe that is open to the public, students pay cheaper for food or drink

What?? 100ml black coffee has about 8kj (2kcal), with milk 24kj (6ckal), with sugar 40kj (10kcal). So how the heck does one save 1000-1800 kcal by quitting coffee?? And I guess by calories OP means kilocalories, doesn't make any sense otherwise.

To me, this is just basic respect. Learn the names of people with whom you spend time. I teach in a sports program (youths and adults), and it bothers me that some of the other instructors barely remember each others' names, let alone the names of the students. Learning their names tells other people that you see them as individuals, and not just a body taking up space. Learn their names, and make sure you're pronouncing them correctly. Also, ask if they prefer to be called something else. "Michael" might actually want to be called "Buckethead", his childhood nickname. You never know.

If you make an effort to get to know the name of all the people you deal with on a regular basis, you will go far, I'm talking about the bus driver, the cashier the homeless person you walk by, the janitor and all the other "unseen" people.

If it's a work colleague, they'll have to go a lot further than just learning my name. I'd rather work with someone reliable that doesn't know my name than with someone who can't get anything done right yet knows my name.

This is backed by science. Smiling, even if it's a fake smile, causes your brain to produce endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine (the happy brain chemicals). I have major depressive disorder, and this Jedi mind trick is very helpful.

Same! Sometimes when I’m having a bad moment, putting a smile on suddenly softens the edges of everything. It’s like your brain automatically starts thinking from a more positive side rather than catastrophizing.

Smiles are contagious. You smile at someone, they smile back. Next thing you know, they smile at someone..that person smiles back. Whenever I'm walking around and I see a kid staring at me, I smile and wave. Puts them in a good mood and mom or dad now have an easier time shopping.
