Have you ever found yourself stunned, truly speechless by someone’s complete lack of knowledge about something everyone seems to know? Like someone asking who Picasso was... during an art class. Or not knowing that the Earth orbits the Sun.

We’ve all had those moments where we didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or just blink in disbelief. So, I asked the Bored Panda community to share the times they were totally flabbergasted by someone’s ignorance—and the answers did not disappoint. From hilariously clueless to downright outrageous, these stories might make you feel like a trivia champion.

Got one of your own? I'd love to hear it!

Yet he seems to know what the American nation wants to hear as he's be elected twice, and the last time with more votes than any other candidate. Older white Americans seem especially attracted to his neo fascism.

Downvote me if what I said upsets you and downvoting me provides you with comfort - but the statements are all factual. As a Canadian I am well prepared to absorb hatred/aggression from Americans.

It does, you know. By getting so traumatized that you starve yourself, drink yourself into the hospital or even kill yourself. That will shut down any pregnancy, right.

See "All Rape is Real Rape" by Alice Vachss, written twenty years ago and sadly just as important now. For states that still manage to get a rape exception into their abortion legislation, my worry is who decides what is a "real" rape. The same people who want outright bans on abortion?

50 Times People Were So Uninformed, It Was Almost Impressive A very young couple moved in downstairs from me. She was very pregnant, but had nothing in place for a baby - no diapers, clothing, etc. I got her some stuff when the baby was born and checked in on her a couple of times. She broke down in tears because she had no idea how she had gotten pregnant and was scared she would be pregnant again immediately. Her ignorance was so profound. I spent some time with her 1 on 1 having sex ed classes. She was amazed at everything I told her. So sad. She was so alone. Her husband was a pig.

In 1979 America was first in maths and science. We now hover in the high 20s to low 30s, with comparably bad literacy rates. An entire generation of conservative PTA moms went to bat for abstinence-based s*x ed and prayer in schools through the 80s and 90s, rather than going to bat for STEM. And here we are. You saw the same resistance to the HPV vaccine in this community.... My daughter is abstinent, why are you libs corrupting her with s*x ed and HPV vaccines. This country is how it is because it's been weighed down by a profoundly bigoted, willfully ignorant, faith-based population. That you'd think at some point would feel enough shame in their constant wrongness to eventually STFU. Nope only gotten louder. I'm waiting for Republicans to go after birth control. ... That ought to wake some bible banging conservative bitches and their "saving it for marriage" (yeah, f*****g right) daughters real fast with voting for ignorant nonsense.

Even sadder, the very Bible these people claim to believe in is very frank about s*x. In Leviticus, everyone is Required to listen to the on a regular basis, grandparents to newborns. A law that talks about seminal emissions, periods, childbirth and even r**e , incest and b*********y. But I guess they know better than the god they claim to worship.

Not that I personally would have ever voted for Trump, can't stand the POS, but I can understand people who are absolutely sick of politicians and thought trying something new might work. It's the people who voted for him AGAIN in the 2020 election that I don't understand. Like, the clusterfuck that's been the past four years clearly didn't work, so there's nothing wrong with admitting that and moving on. And yet somehow our "amazing" democratic system gave us the two absolutely worst choices to choose from for the 2020 election... smh

Male role models, even female role models who think this is the way its supposed to be. Back in the day, an initial No was expected in order, idont know, protect a reputation or conscience? The holiday song Baby, It's Cold Outside is an example. Then there's the generic psychopath who will use any excuse, or no excuse. Every now and then a woman will shock and sadden me by seeming actually, verbally ask for it. I can understand in a way, they may have had a brain freeze. I remember back in primary school, I had a quick test on my times tables as I was the first to correct.y get my six times table. I was asked what 3 x 5 was, and my mind went blank. Absolutely blank. I just went errmm for about five minutes when I quickly remembered and shouted it out! I remember there was a girl a few seats away looking at me like she was disgusted with me (we were actually friends, as we bonded over laughing at the words to a hymn we sang in assembly. Yes it's painfully obvious, but if you ever got marked down for just writing the answer, the next time you're going to go through all the stupid motions because a good half of maths is not in obtaining the correct answer, it's in showing that you know how to arrive there.

Homosexuality doesn't share a term with a scientific term that means, roughly at least, what the dad above claims it means. Don't get me wrong, I don't think they're making an honest mistake, they're just being d***s, but it's likely to continue happening so long as the sexuality (or lack there of?) shares its name with a scientific term.

I think your Dad has that confused... hermaphrodites are people who are born with both sets of sexual organs. Asexuality is the absence of those organs, but in connection to humans, it also implies lack of interest and action in the realm of s*x.

Do American schools not teach geography any longer? I mean, geez, these questions are downright idiotic! How long does it take to drive to Spain from the U.S.? Did you travel by train from Australia to the U.S.? Do American schools not have the money to invest in a globe for the schoolrooms? Maps? Or are they more concerned about kids learning about gay rights, transgenders, furries, etc? Exactly how does that help kids nowadays with learning about the world? It doesn't. Study maps, kids! Read books (and not the Bill thinks he's a girl, so call him Bell type of books, either!) You can read those on your own time; in school, study on the three Rs - reading, writing, 'rithmatic. Get the schools to go back to the basics. Study WWI and WWII so we don't repeat history.

You don't call me a liar to my face and get away with it. The first was as I was changing shifts so I just told him he was an idiot and then left my co worker to deal with him (a regular customer followed me out to check I was OK because I was so angry I was about to cry), the second I told to get out because I wasn't serving him and I work alone.

What bothers me so much is everyone who is currently playing Monday morning armchair quarterback, mainly GOP politicians saying that we should have known better and never quarantined, had the lockdowns, b/c now kids have fallen behind in school, the economy is a mess, etc. We were dealing w/ a new virus that was killing people by the thousands every day, learning literally day by day new information about it, hence the "flip-flopping" on masks & other policies, & the Trump admin threw out the plan the Obama admin had written in case something like this ever happened. So states, cities, & govt agencies were doing the best they could w/ the info they had at the moment, preferring to err on the side of caution. What we've really learned is just how gullible the US people truly are.

When the group met for the first time to work on our presentation, this woman asked where Islam was. He for informed me that the only reason people don't have insurance is because they spend money on phones and TVs. They were primed with decades of propaganda from the old talk shows like Rush Limbaugh. The lid blew up on it when it transitioned to internet style pod casts. All Trump did was capitalize on it. He did it well, but still; just another grifter-type hawking...bibles among other things by playing to people's insecurities and making them think they have a voice through him. My educated atheist BIL got hooked the same way. He just refuses to believe any contradicting evidence even if he's complaining about Trump. Total indoctrination!

50 Times People Were So Uninformed, It Was Almost Impressive When my doctor had me sent to see a specialist, strongly believing I was suffering cluster migraines … & the specialist doctor (female) told me that women don’t get cluster migraines; she legit said “No, it can’t be cluster migraines … you’re not the right sex!”. Both my mum & I were like WTF. I eventually was diagnosed (by another specialist with a little more common sense) with cluster migraines & they started me on long-term Palexia tablets. Even now, I still SMH when I think about that specialist doctor. 🤦‍♀️😅

I wish it were a joke, but I swear that’s how it went. They weren’t going to just give me stronger meds without a solid diagnosis, so; I was bounced around between different ones, until they gave the official diagnosis for cluster migraines, then I got sent to the pain clinic for my (then) new meds. I used to have one cluster migraine every 1-2 months (& the worst ones left me in absolute agony for weeks), had to keep my bedroom as dark as a bat cave, lights dimmed all the way down, wearing sunglasses & my nieces/nephews had to be reminded to keep the noise to a minimum when visiting … it’s THAT painful. Since I’ve been getting Palexia, though, I don’t get them quite so often (unless triggered) & it’s not nearly as intense; I can usually ride it out, as long as I follow the same routine to the letter. 🤷‍♀️😄

I started getting migraines when I was 15 (this was back in '91). Went from Dr to Dr, each male, each tried to blame it on my period, except by the time I was in my early 20s, I was having 23-26 migraines a month. How is my period doing that?! The best was when a Dr told me I was just imagining I was having migraines b/c I'm bipolar & I was looking for attention. (Seriously, couldn't make this s**t up if I tried.) I almost believed him. Thank goodness I found a migraine expert who told me, "You are absolutely not imagining them. Your migraines are real. You aren't crazy, just bipolar, & those quacks are too afraid to admit that they don't know what's causing your migraines. I don't know, either, but we'll figure it out together." God bless that man, b/c he restored my faith in doctors.

Omg, yeah! I had to wait a long time for my PCOS/endometriosis diagnoses as well, but they knew I was having insanely heavy periods in my teens & they also tried to blame the head pain on that (thankfully my fam weren’t going to let that slide & shut them down when they tried it). Also the attention-seeking thing, because I had a VERY brief history of self-harm; on one occasion, when I hurt myself out of severe emotional pain from being SA’d when I was 15. They claimed I wanted attention (having autism, I hate being centre of attention) & that I was lying about the pain for that reason … except I’m incapable of lying to people, due to my Aspergers; which makes me say even the most brutal of honesties sometimes (& why I often get so many downvotes on BP sometimes, LOL). Lucky I ended up with such a wonderful GP, who set things right eventually. I’m glad you found your “Good Doctor”, too & I hope you’ve been able to get some relief for your pain. 🙂💖

Omg, they said that?? Oh, I’d be so mad … as I like a bit of hummus myself sometimes & chocolate is practically a staple food for some people! LOL. Allergies don’t even work like that (I only know because my 2nd youngest nephew has dozens of allergies, including an airborne nut allergy). Many of these backwards doctors would rather claim it’s “hysteria” than give women appropriate medical treatment these days, saying “you can endure childbirth, so what’s a little more pain to you” … though they’re not stupid enough to say it out loud. Having had so many pain conditions, I totally feel your frustration. I hope you’ve found some kind of relief, my friend, despite your negative experience with doctors. 💖

Absolutely agree with you there, especially when some of them have the nerve to get angry about being proven wrong. Sure, there was a time when they didn’t use anaesthetic for infants, claiming they didn’t feel pain; so even major surgeries were done with the paralytic meds, but no pain relief. Scary stuff. You’d think medical “professionals” would have enough professionalism to eat a bit of humble pie on occasion. 😅

I’m sorry you had to wait so long for an appropriate prescription. I have to admit, there were occasions before my diagnosis when my mum would take me to A&E screaming my head off in absolute agony, out of sheer desperation. For a few times, they’d give me a quick dose of IV morphine & send us home … but they eventually refused to give me any more, despite the disruption I’d be making in their waiting area & so many gawking people (as they pretty much accused me of faking or suggesting my mum had “munchausens by proxy”, which p*ssed off my entire fam). At least I got help in the end, though. I only hope yours has been reduced, too. 😯

My heart goes out to her. It isn’t easy, that’s for sure. One thing that helps me is Coca-Cola (original), as the caffeine is said to help with some of the worst headaches/migraines. That, plus a dark room & as much sleep as possible. I actually wear earphones & use my iPad to play white noise or specific music to help me sleep through the worst of the pain, even during the day. It really is s shame that some doctors are like this. Took my cat to the vet with a growth on her gums. Nurse asst or whatever her title is instantly gave me the it's probably cancer look and even went as far as to prepare me of it being cancer which I truly believed it wasn't. Growth removed, not cancerous. So now I don't trust you and why would I come back for more wrong disagnoses?

Omg, that’s definitely not okay! Our fur-babies definitely deserve the best of health care, so it’s a good idea to “shop” for the best veterinarians (& it’s perfectly okay to want second & third opinions if you feel a diagnosis is totally wrong). If it was only the veterinarian assistant who was out of line, you might want to discreetly mention it to her superior, as they can’t just make diagnoses like that. Good thing your kitty has such a brilliant advocate! 💖

4 of Jesus' 12 disciples were fishermen (Peter, Andrew, James, and John), so maybe there was a fish lobby in the early church. So, for 2 millennia, Catholics were forced to be piscivorous every Friday.

When I was a waitress at Glacier National Park in the 80s, I had 2 things happen regularly. We wore name tags with the state we were from, Illinois, in my case. I could not count how many times I heard “Illinois … Chicago?” typically in a smug voice. I did not understand where the smugness came from. Part 2: People would ask how a meat dish was, and I’d tell them what I’d been told. I was vegetarian and did not know. So many people would latch on to that and say “but you eat chicken and fish, right?” To this day, I haven’t found a chicken or fish tree. Many people treated me like a moron or something. Once a man told me that my bike brakes did *not* work in the rain. In another restaurant, I served somebody prime beef or some slab of meat. He was over the moon about how good it was and demanded I try it. While I was working. As a waitress. After I told him I was vegetarian. There was no protocol for that because surely that would never happen, right?

For the kosher angle: Fish doesn't look like meat on a plate (can't be confused for chicken or beef), so doesn't fall under the meat and dairy rule. The Torah only specifically calls out eating cows with milk, but because of reasons (antisemites looking for excuses to attack Jews) chicken gets categorized with beef despite not producing milk. So chicken, beef, etc cannot be eaten with dairy, but fish can be included in a dairy meal.

50 Times People Were So Uninformed, It Was Almost Impressive My mother genuinely believed transgender people are transgender because of their parents. Elon Musk's trans daughter rather disproves that. He apparently prefers IVF specifically because he wants sons more than daughters. It's no wonder he hates her so much since was born the s*x he wanted but transitioned to the gender he has no respect for. He's never confirmed that all his kids are IVF, but it would definitely make his absolute loathing of his daughter make more sense because it's so vicious it seems to go beyond just the fact she's trans. If he really is choosing to only have sons and she's now shown he doesn't have complete control over that it would definitely press all his buttons.

I mean… •-• whenever my dad said something about me acting like a big brother, or if family commented on how I did “such a nice job” on looking like a boy in a musical I was in… it felt nice lol. Not that I wanna be a boy. But I was like “Whaaa?? I looked like a boy even though I looked like a girl?! Sign me up!” Though, I could tell behind their “nice job” they didn’t like that I looked different from a girl.

Occasionally, there is a transgender patient who was grandly screwed up by the parents and subjected to brainwashing or just plain forced into living as the other gender. BUT, it is very rare.

My son's (12) theory about aliens and us on earth is that they came and put us here as an experiment. And that whenever people have sightings, it is them checking on our progress, and the only reason they haven't come to collect us is because we are failing horribly. I kinda agree with him.

I think it would be extreme arrogance to look up at the stars, and assume that none of those stars have a planet in their system that supports some form of life. now, whether or not any of them have the technology or inclination to come here, that's something else entirely. it's pretty unlikely

To get to work and back I need to drive over a 10 km (about 6 miles) mountain pass that tends to flood a bit during the rainy season. Nothing serious, just water streaming across the road. My car tires were worn, and I had to replace it to ensure my safety during these mini floods. My ex Gf got upset that I spend the money on my safety instead of the bottle of perfume she wanted (I didn't promise to buy it, she just hinted a lot). Her words were to the effect that " You drive over the mountain, not me..." So I dumped her a*s.

I had a nice time on Quora for a few months. I quickly found a niche, in which I would thoroughly and patiently explain, often by making illustrations myself, basic science concepts to people with poor science understanding but genuine curiosity. Gravity, astronomy, the Big Bang, the scientific method, etc. But it quickly became more work than it was worth to work around their algorithm, which insisted on sending me to willfully ignorant flat earthers, creationists, conspiracy nuts and general science deniers—and by extension the MAGA crowd. The simple, two-part “hate science/love Trump” Venn diagram has a LOT of overlap. So I gave up. 🙁

Yep! My father taught me how to do basic check-up and maintenance on a car before I was 10 years old XD He also taught me how to change a tire and how to change brake pads (hard to do by myself, but I can do it in an emergency.) I know more about cars than any of my male friends. It also REALLY helps you prevent fleecing by the mechanics when you do have to take the ol' heap into the shop.

The first car I ever killed was from thinking when the oil light came on, I probably had the same amount of time to rectify that as I did when the gas light came on. Very expensive lesson, but I learned it well... 34 years without blowing an engine since.

50 Times People Were So Uninformed, It Was Almost Impressive My best friend's now ex-wife truly believed that if you pay the minimum payment on a credit card, you won't accrue interest. She couldn't understand why her 10K in debt is now 16K. Yeah, she is that dumb. She also thought that if she didn't tell him about the credit card, he'd never find out. Luckily, because she took it out in her name only, the judge wouldn't let her bring it up in the divorce.

50 Times People Were So Uninformed, It Was Almost Impressive It may be minor, but I once had a boss "correct" a report I wrote because I used the phrase "ever since" (as in "Ever since he moved to this neighborhood..."). She insisted that the correct term was "every since". She was in her 50s and had a masters degree in English. I actually had to pull up and internet article to convince her that I had written it correctly.

Oy vey. I had a similar experience with my first boss (Masters, ex-IBM). Dictating a letter to me, he insisted that the word was spelt "wholistic". I wouldn't back down (age 17) that it was "holistic". He got really angry till I produced a dictionary. He calmed down, then told me 'i think you'd be one of the 5% who'd pass the Millgram experiment ' 😀

The etymology of "holistic" is neither from "hole" nor "whole". It comes from the Greek word "όλος".

When I was 16, my beloved German Shepherd, Ember, developed mammary tumors (basically breast cancer.) She was 12 and the vet said she was too old for surgery or chemo, so he recommended we make her comfortable with pain meds and enjoy whatever time we had left with her. My mom started freaking out that Ember was "contagious" and that she (my mom) was going to "catch" cancer from my dog. My mom would go on tirades literally every day about how my dog's cancer was "contagious". She would bleach and scrub the backyard every time Ember walked anywhere. She forced me to euthanize Ember after a few weeks. I have never forgotten her screaming in my face that I needed to kill my dog NOW because cancer is "contagious". If my mother happens to be diagnosed with cancer someday, I will say to her face, "Gross, cancer is contagious, I don't want to catch it, you're on your own."

H*******t denial isn’t a specific crime in the UK, but the person in question was prosecuted under laws around communications, I think for being grossly offensive. I don’t know when people will understand that ‘freedom of speech’ means the freedom to criticise the government without them coming for you. It doesn’t mean you can say anything you want, anywhere, without consequence.

I’m not sure if this counts but I heard someone in my class say ‘toads and frogs are the same, toads are only frogs who have eaten too many flies” And the same kid also said “tigers lay striped eggs” “The pyramids of Egypt is located somewhere in Asia” “America created Europe and the Europeans brainwashed us”

I once worked with a lady who got irate over “handicapped” people parking in “normal” people’s spots (her words). She would leave notes on cars, yell at people and just rant about it. I tried explaining multiple times why it could happen. The disabled person not being in the car so it would be illegal for them to use the spot, the person having a lift and needing more room than available, the standard spots being more convenient, etc. Never helped. She just ranted about “those people” stealing her spots.

I have a tag in my car for when my mom, who had a stroke a year and a half ago, is with me. We only use it on her really bad days or if there isn't a spot close enough for her that's not handicap. Most of the time she is ok walking a bit, so I don't take a handicap spot.

I have good days and bad days. On bad days, I legitimately park in a handicapped space (I have a placard.) On good days, I park in "normal" spaces to leave the handicapped ones for people who need them.

It was a Friday Night. My then girlfriend said that she didn't feel like going out, just wanted to stay home and watch a movie. She asked for a very "intense" movie. So I got out my copy of "Schindler's List" - a VERY intense movie! About a half-hour in she says "What war is this?" I explained WWII. She asked "When was WWII?" I said "1940s". About an hour in she said "You mean the German Government picked on these people just for being Jewish? All those smart people..." She had never heard of the Holocaust. PS: She was a college graduate (Marketing).

No matter how much you know about the N**i atrocities in WW2 there is more to know and it is much worse than that. 6 million dead? No, 6 million Jewish dead. Total civilians m******d in occupied lands is around 11 million. Then there's what they did in Russia, k**l 19 million civilians, to add to the toll. That's 'only' the numbers. What was done was, unbelievably, even worse than murder - and that is saying something..

My coworker (who has become a dear friend) was explaining how they had handled their recent bout with COVID. I found her to be smart and careful with her decisions. I was therefore shocked when she said "...and I finally found a doctor who would prescribe ivermectin." I did a double take, and when I tried to explain how it had been proved to be ineffective for treating COVID (and potentially dangerous to people), she was very resistant. We remain close, but it was definitely eye opening!

Even if Freanch was spoken only in France, it still would be taught as a foreign language in other countries.

He was, likely, referring to the two choices for learning foreign language in a US high school. French or Spanish. Latin is sometimes offered, but trying to find a native Latin speaker is... difficult. Behind that is German, followed by a random assortment of other languages that very rarely are offered. Lot of schools just have French or Spanish though. I get the sentiment. Spanish is a heavily used language, especially on this continent. Plus, I'm still mad at France for the whole "silent x" thing.

MOST of the super high GPAs are the result of either cheating (parents doing their homework) or teachers who are sucking up to rich kids parents. NOT because the kids would use a brain if they had one.

He was smart, just super oblivious. He also asked super loudly in class once how you type Roman numerals on a computer. Everyone just stared at him until someone eventually told him to just do capital letters for i and v.

Not going to lie. Even if they did, I'd still probably given them a weird look. It doesn't exactly roll of the tongue, and it doesn't present a new concept or put an existing concept in a different or clever light. It's not WRONG, but neither is saying "Education makes you educated."

When my grandmother asked me why I was putting eardrops in both my son's ears for ear infections. I told her both ears were infected, and she said, "Doesn't it just run through to the other ear?" She wasn't uneducated by any means, but she was born in 1900 and I guess they didn't learn much anatomy in school. She looked shocked when I laughed, as I thought she was joking. And then I had to explain it to her.

Had a job as a janitor once. Cleaned and locked up park restrooms at night part time. New hand towel dispensers had recently been installed at this location. It was a different design from the last one we were used to. Opened it up and spent five minutes trying to figure it out. Where do I feed the paper towel roll into? Hmm. Oh! Ok, just put the roll in, feed it out the bottom and close the thing, easier than the last one. Done. Both my other coworkers took a year and a half to figure this out.

My coworkers often struggle getting one of our hand towel dispensers open and filled. Yes, our dispensers are almost all different and open on different way, but all open with a simple pull. I can't understand how they can open all side- and bottom opening ones, but the top opening is so clearly impossible to figure out.

A classmate of mine thought Germany was in Africa, in addition to thinking that Australia was a country in Europe. I have also had my own experience of absolute ignorance when I was told to open a can of tomatoes. I had no idea whatsoever how to use a can opener. I once worked with a young woman in an Engineering firm. She was an admin assistant. She was arguing with an engineer about whether the next town over from us was north of south of where we were. He just said 'Ok point to north.' She pointed to the sky and was incredibly puzzled when we all facepalmed and laughed. Second incident is with two different co workers at a different job. I was telling them that my sister had rescued some ex battery hens. One pipes up and says are they like the man made chickens or the real ones? Another asked where the battery went in them.
