78 More Brutally Honest Illustrations By Pawel Kuczynski Show What’s Wrong With Today’s Society
Observations of modern society, our habits and obsessions, are an important tool to have as we try to make sense of a rapidly changing world.
Sometimes we need to step back, slow down and look at ourselves with fresh eyes. Only then do the absurdities and flaws that we seem to have accepted as the norm become evident, and we can begin to question them.
Polish artist Pawel Kuczynski is an absolute master of this, combining powerful social commentary and satire with beautifully illustrated pieces, to make us sit back and reassess our priorities. “From the beginning I found that illustration was the best way to express my observations,” Pawel told Bored Panda. “I always say, that I'm an illustrator of a surrealistic time, so that is reflected in my work.”
Pawel began his career outside of his native Poland in order to focus on more global issues. “I wanted to be understandable for all peoples,” he told us. “I try not to speak directly about current problems. I try to find a wider view. Some times it's too wide! I receive many different kinds of opinion from people, that I'm old communist, liberal, fascist, conservative, anti-technological man, etc.”
In light of recent allegations surrounding Facebook and our data, the unjust wars that continue to rage around us, poverty, inequality and environmental degradation everywhere, these illustrations are highly relevant and deeply thought-provoking. What does Pawel think about the technology that we seem to be so in thrall to? “Facebook and other technological innovations are just the tools. It depends on us, for what kind of purposes we will use them.”

Telling a secret on Facebook is like shouting it out in a mall. I do not think Facebok is too blame for this, as it is like a mall, not like a private home. People need to be educated not to give up common sense once they are online.
Load More Replies...Wow, what a facile and reductive view or modern life this "artist" has. I'd be surprised is he were younger than 60, given how much everyone of these illustrations seems like the crabby and confused complaining of an elderly man.
Facebook is entertainment to me and a way to communicate with family and friends who live all over. But im not a moron or a robot. I learned to talk, read, write in cursive on paper before I learned to text strangers. I like interacting in person still and don't trust anything online unless I know the source, then I look at the source, view my local paper, look around me, think... Then I form an opinion. I will not scream out anybody's logo. cause I'm smart and research and I'm also not a sheep
just like humans of the world, instead of helping let's see how many likes I can get for this pic. sad times
News travels faster than it ever has been these days. Traditional news coverage is no longer the leading source for many people - instead, normal people at the scene can film their own home coverage of events, leading to faster alerts. Donating is also easier than ever with online funding websites that have lead to countless people getting word out about their problems - people who otherwise would not have been able to survive without the kindness of strangers on the internet. There have always been good and bad people.
Load More Replies...Horrible , cruel and big things are happening these days in our world and media are feeding on it , such a paradox evil things served in real time to us without emotional and physical support from the one who are watching it !
Per all these irate comments there is no doubt that the artist hit the bull's eye with an unquestionable punch. If the shoe fits, wear it!!!
That's not what I see, I see a world in which the natural order of things is being twisted into something strange, if that's the cat's only source if food, she will die. In this world there's no understanding, no order.
Except you can find all the knowledge you can read in books on the Internet and more. Sigh.
Load More Replies...Ridiculous. If the books are digital or analogue isn't the issue. The problem is that people seems to have lost the ability to read long texts. They ask for a short brief description instead of putting themselves into the whole context
there is a lot of c**p books on the world tho. People nowadays thinks that reading a "real" book is above the "techy peasants". But the content is mor important than the printed or digital form.
Not all books are equal, and just because you read physical books you aren't necessarily smarter than the rest of the world.
Load More Replies...The message might be that under the plastic trash, phone device not withstanding, there is a real book full of good words, the 'real' pearl...
I guess the illustrator who created this piece hasn't read many books so far. The real treasures are buried deep beneath a sh*tton of crappy bargain table books.
We always had a rule, no phones at the dinner table. All our kids are grown up now and once told us they still don't bring their phones to the dinner table (unless they are eating alone).
Load More Replies...this makes me so sad. I know a lot of people aren't religious on BP, but when I pray with a lot of my friends they can't improvise a prayer on the spot at all. They can only recite prayers they've memorized instead of talking to God like a family member, and they're excited to finish praying so they can get on their phones ):
A family cannot afford a trip to the beach (or a lake) so looks at videos (or pictures) of water while praying they could get to see the real thing sometime later? :D
Give up Pattie - these illustrations are much deeper.

Looks like a combination of water-color paint and colored pencils to me. No irony.

That's dishonest.. Problems in third world countries are mostly due to domestic problems, like corruption, overpopulation, tribalism, lack of education etc.
Those so called problems are created, motivated and accepted by nations having the economical and financial power to subjugate the other ones.
Load More Replies...Personally, I see this one quite literal. Years ago at an amusement park. There was a ride where I wasn't allowed in to. There was a disabled entrance though. So I though I could go in the ride, still. (Did not know I was not allowed in there at that time yet). It turned out (after waiting for ages for someone to show up) I wasn't allowed into the ride because of safety reasons, but in a special room, they showed me what the attraction was like (it was an indoor attraction). So basically they just showed me what I missed! Make a disabled entrance or just DON'T! But that was just cruel. Because there were attractions with disabled entrances where I was allowed into! I know this is not what the picture is about. But I saw it like this because of that experience.
Equating fat as disabled is b******t. Equating disabled as a negative or less than is b******t.
Yeah all that physical activity you need to read a book, you're right. Flipping pages is difficulttt

We're paddling in the shallow pool of banality that is the internet, and ignoring an ocean of experience in the written word.
Sorry to interrupt, but I am really done with this "books are good - internet is bad" prejudice. I've seen some terribly wrong and dumb books and some brilliant and smart digital content. Contents matter. Form does not.
But with it being so easy to post content on the internet, there sure is an awful lot of dreck to wade through before you can find the good stuff on there!
Load More Replies...Where you get the information from does not matter, just so long as you get the information. Remember that at some point in our past the printed book was a "New fangled quirk" It amuses me to see negative posts about technology and internet on a social media platform on the internet. If the internet is so bad stay off it. Use only books and traditional methods of information gathering and sharing. If everyone who is against the internet stayed off it, it might not be as popular and could have died. If it still remains you will have at least freed up bandwidth for people who enjoy the Internet.
Books will one day be obsolete. Over half of Americans are semi-literate.
That's it. We spend hours on these little devices that give us close to nothing of what's really out there in the ocean of information.
Or how about the internet contains more than a static ocean that will not change much.
Perhaps the message is in the choice we make. For certain the internet allows us to go deep if we want but I think the image shows the use of a smart phone rather than a computer because we use our phones for immediate answers rather than more complex searches. The character is looking toward the book perhaps contemplating another option. Does he need the swim aides where he is or is he thinking of going deeper?

Mmmmh... I welcome the potential downvotes, but I'll be the "black sheep" defending technology in this one. Pokemon Go was meant to get people out of their homes and go take a walk. Like Wii and Kinect, the concept is an effort to solve the problems of decreased physical activity caused by video games. I give it credit for that.
Ingress has been around couple years (maybe 4-5) years longer than Pokémon. Same idea. But yes, it's good to get out and see the neighborhood.
Load More Replies...30+ people have died from pokemon go. Everybody is acting like it's not a big deal in till they get hurt and still play the game I think technology has gone too far
I Just hope this Artist reads 3 books per week, does not have a phone or play video games. Because if he does, this are just plain hypocritical.
I don't. Never give the devil a ride; he'll always want to control the reins.
Games and apps have control over humans. For example ast his photo shows, Pokemon Go. It basically has you go to other people's homes countries and placed they don't normally go, sometimes even getting hurt or breaking rules.
You are not only observant, but honest, and also courageous. Now you are free to go out and do something about it, without altogether giving up your phone. Find the space in the middle. Survive where others won't.

OH--I think he's literally giving himself a physical disability (inability to fly)through poor diet (obesity)
I immediately thought of it as he's slowly killing himself by his eating habits... one wing already. Almost like having "one foot in the grave". I love that it can be interpreted so many ways and all of them make sense.
I'm seeing shortsightedness, need for instant gratification, at one's own cost.
i got nothin on this one except...Dude WTF! your wings were made to fly not to be fried!
I think it's saying what if we treated ourselves how we treat animals, like he's eating a chicken wing but it's his own wing that's damaged..
He's eating his own wing. Couldn't see it at first. This is how greedy and self destructive we can be.
This is basically representing autocannibalism of the soul. His wings represent his moral/religious beliefs (think of an angel wing, rather than a bird) whereas the act of cutting off a wing, frying it up and gluttonously eating it represents his willingness to temporarily put aside those same moral/religious beliefs in order to self-affirm his viewpoint on the world. Take for example an intense religious person who is willing to insult, belittle, put-down, and generally express hatred towards others for having a different religious/atheist viewpoint (I'm sure we all know at least one). This is usually in direct opposition to the basic teachings of most religions, often referred to as the "Golden Rule;" to treat others with kindness. They're sacrificing their belief in the "Golden Rule" (the angel wing) in order to validate their individual perspectives (a satisfying meal).
We're isolated by technology, not brought together. And we don't see that...
Yeah, everybody is so well connected but isolated, would we continue calling this a "society"?
Technology and internet, consuming children who actually still read books and seek true knowledge. When there are so many "phone sharks" around, soon there will be no more children of this kind.
That's very pessimistic. I know schools full of children that love books.

This one is pretty meaningful. I think it's abuse at work. Including entertainment business. Anyone that's valuable, creative, and kind. Is grounded to leave traces in this world with their wings. But those teaces are really boring patterns. For the sake of maintaining status quo, so the money of the bad boss can stay safe.
i see this one as using religion as the work horse to plow your fields. abusing religion just to have things done the way you want.
Interesting question for me here is: why does the angel remain when it would be so easy to fly off to bigger better things... When and how did the angel allow himself to become a slave?
It isn't just "religion," in my opinion; the angel clearly represents Christianity. The man is literally letting Christianity do his "dirty work" for him. It's happening in the US right now. "Men never commit evil so fully and joyfully as when they do it for religious convictions."--Blaise Pascal
Well, could refer to the fact that religion is used to keep people as 'slaves'. Why would the be the angel appproch if not aimed at something religious?
If only! I know what I'm going to say is not the message in this one, but I do wish all guns were replaced with selphy sticks.

Idk .... is this the real reason all the gun advocates love their guns so much? How it makes them “look”?

Justice is SO blind. If you are famous or rich enough you can get away with anything. Look at the past and even now. Trump admitted to grabbing women but instead of an investigation he was elected President
When did he admit that? Or are you referring to the locker room talk?
Load More Replies...Blinded by tightly binding one's thinking - No eye and a constricted brain! This gas nothing to do with justice.
Justice should be blind, so as not to judge based on appearance or be biased. But it gone so far beyond that and tightened its own blindfold so much with silly loophiles that it it is crushing it's own brain (Common sense).

People who already have money are trying to push out the one's who don't. Like immigration in a way.
Cheers to Poland - we don't take in immigrants, especially the ones from africa or asia. Still wondering why our country has been proved to be one of the safest in the world???
A bit ironic that Sweden received a lot of Polish immigrants in 1960s and -70s who wished to work here. Maybe we wouldn't have if we had judged every Polack by how a few people behave, like you judge Asian and African immigrants.
Load More Replies...If the first world nations do not like "illegals" perhaps they should stop raping the rest of the world and creating the conditions that cause these "illegal people." I totally agree with this one. We need to worry about all living things, not just ourselves.
To me, this looks like a game of chess between "whites" and "blacks", where the whites have the high and dry ground (so-called "privilege"), and are backed by what looks like a medieval European castle. What I'm not sure about is who is controlling the game.
I think this is representative of Social Security. You have to work your whole life to hand over your money (wool), and then the government will take it all, but will give you Social Security (life ring) when you retire, but it really won't be enough for you to live on and you'll "drown".
Exactly! Government's favorite way of doing things - we're going to take something of value from you, then redistribute it so everyone can get something of little to no value.

Double-meaning warning. They leave a little bit of "wool" to stay afloat on the "sea of water".
Try to find cage-free/free-range eggs. Cost more. Don't care, I buy them anyhow.
They’re saying that social media is a vast empire that’s ran by the best and humanity are the feeble slaves that build it and maintain it, in reality we’re just slaves to social media even if we’re the ones in control.
Quick fact: The workers who built the pyramids at Giza weren't technically slaves. Recent excavations of some barracks and a bread factory indicate that they were paid for their work.

Pawel Kuczynski is an amazing artist with wonderful technique. His work is satirical, but much broader than just critiques of personal technology use as this post shows.
