So when someone asked the non-Americans of Reddit what's the craziest thing they’ve heard about the greatest country in the world that turned out to be true, the question was destined to become a hit. 56.9K upvotes later, the thought-provoking inquiry generated some very surprising answers. (This was not even a rumor, but more like sarcastic comment from a friend who heard I was excited to go to the US, because he knew what book nerds my entire family is)
When I first arrived here 25 years ago, the first day of work at Newark NJ, I walked out at lunch time and saw the huge Central Library. The size boggled my mind, but I bravely walked in to check it out. The guy says, yup, show me your work ID (for local address) and you get a membership card.
Me: how much does it cost? I only own $80 total till I get my first pay.
He (bemused, almost laughing): it's free. You don't pay anything.
Me (after a brief recovery time from shock): so how many books am I allowed to take home? (Expecting that to be a catch - maybe I need to put down a security deposit for each book)
He (now positively enjoying himself): how many can you carry?
That day I took home 30+ books, just being greedy.
And quickly called my dad to tell him about it.
For a guy who painstakingly would browse used books stores in small town India just to get his kids great books to read, he was suitably amazed. He was puzzled if that would kill the book-store business, because who'd buy if such free libraries existed?!?
Till date I remember the gratitude I felt that day for being able to come here. And when Dad visited some years later, I would drop him off at a library on my way to work and he'd be lost in it all day.

And it is so true. A friend of mine, European but living in the states for years now, had a traffic incident and when the ambulance arrived they asked her what hospital she wanted be taken to. But the actual question was if she was insured or not. She was, but I can imagine in what pile of s**t she would have been in if she wasn't. A lot of people in the US can't afford an ambulance, and that is a sad fact.

This is so true, when I was 20 I took a job at a race track. One day when taking a horse that was a known kicker (something that I wasnt informed of), out of her stall to the walker she whirled caught me square in the stomach. I flew, I mean I caught air, my boss called an ambulance, insisting he would pay for it as I was uninsured. The hospital was less than a mile away, so I reluctantly accepted the lift. Long story short, I was ok physically, but since they took me by ambulance and did an MRI just to be safe, I was on the hook for 17 thousand dollars. And that was after they so "generously" gave me the "cash price". I was 20 years old with a baby to take care of and my boss slipped away promising to pay never to be seen again. It LITERALLY ruined my life, all of a sudden I was unable to do the things that you need to do to build a life, no loans, no housing, no jobs, having bad credit in the states is like having your future cancelled.
I am so sorry this happened to you. I can't believe you couldn't file for compensation since it happened at work. $17,000 for tests you didn't want. What does "cash prize" mean?

Yup. People will call Uber or Lyft. When my wife was 2 months pregnant 8 years ago she fell down about 6 stairs, she's fine. We were worried about the baby and the security guard called an ambulance. We were told at that stage the baby is like a pea inside a watermelon and she's fine. Ambulance bill, $1,371 after insurance.
I was at a hardware store and slid a board across my hand while loading it. A piece of the board stabbed completely through and became stuck in a tendon in the center of my hand. I broke the piece off (about 1 foot long) and sat in my car for 30 min with a utility knife trying to cut it out myself before googling reviews for hospitals in the area. I knew that the hospital just 2 miles away was really sketchy, so I drove 35 miles away to a hospital with better billing policies (it was a catholic-run hospital). Had to have emergency surgery to have it removed.
Once you have been subjected to the laughable and tragic assquackery that goes on in our hospitals (and our medical and pharmaceutical industries), you, too, will avoid taking a $1000 ride to one.
My mom had symptoms similar to what a stroke might have and we were told to go to the emergency room. She was afraid that if it didn't end up being an emergency, we would have to pay $500.00 even with insurance just for using the emergency room. Apparently, when the doctor told us that we could stay overnight to monitor her instead of going home and waiting for results, we wouldn't have had to pay the $500.00 because overnight stays count as "emergencies." If we were sent home, they are no longer "emergencies" and you have to pay the bill that they charge you. It's bloody ridiculous.
At 1200 USD a pop(+fees), better to crawl in on bloody stumps, sadly.

It's true, I've driven myself & friends, on multiple occasions; bleeding heavily just to sit in an ER for HOURS in a small town. After being admitted I do most of the clean up & Doctoring then get billed$1500 for 5 stitches, my friend was billed $3200 for 12.
Self-driving when injured can't possibly be safe. Shock, pain, blood loss - these will ruin a person's ability to drive!! I'm surprised people doing that don't end up in even worse accidents.

This is really sad. My dad had an allergic reaction to something he was eating and someone had called an ambulance for him. He went to the hospital and he waited for a while. The nurse gave him a quick 5 minute basic check up and then left. That’s all the treatment my dad got even though he was there for HOURS. We later got a bill for over 3,000 dollars. THEY DIDN'T EVEN DO ANYTHING FOR HIM

The cops called an ambulance when my ex was threatening suicide (in a shower holding a knife to his own throat - f*****g whack job). Really, you couldn't just take him to the psyche ward in your cruiser? $1500 for a less than 15 minute ride, which I fought and never paid. (He got that bill in the divorce).
I don't believe in tipping. The employee knew to begin with what their pay will be. If it wasn't enough they should look for a different job. Customers shouldn't have to pay more for services. I don't know who is saying there's nothing wrong with being tiny bit late. I agree with other countries. Plan your time correct and get there before or at least on time. dressing sloppy is also not good. Why would you go to a different country and dress like a slob. No need to actually wear a suit unless it's business or formal. Americans need to learn to have more respect for others and themselves. I'm a U.S. citizen and others will change for the better
The problem is the wait staff gets paid something like $2.50/hr EVERYWHERE. There are VERY FEW places that actually pay minimum wage, so they cannot "look for a different job" as wait staff. A fair number are working the job while they goto university.

I find this extremely confusing. And I really hate the staff tipping concept, too.
In an area, you're subject to a f*ck ton of different laws. There's laws that apply to the whole country, laws that apply to individual states, laws that only apply to counties, laws that apply to individual cities, and then I think, different areas within a city. In England, no matter where you are, all the same laws apply, with very rare exceptions. Homeowners associations as well. What a load of [crap]. Land of the free, but your neighbour can tell you what colour your f***king fence can be.
Well, it’s difficult to govern such a large country from one small district (DC), so you have to delegate from the federal government to the individual state governments to the county governments to the city governments. The more local you get, the more specialized the laws become as they’re tailored to issues and situations specific to the area. However, that does open areas up to corruption if the wrong people manage to gain some power. You know, like the whole f*****g country because of the deranged orange baboon throwing his feces around the Oval Office right now (who I did not vote for, so do not blame me).
That women only get about 6 weeks off work after having a baby and it's most likely to be unpaid.

Americans are nice and will stop to talk to Strangers. Canadian here living in Alberta. To any one who has never been, you will be blown away by the general Americans' generosity of their time, knowledge and helpfulness. I have done a few summers of Road trips from Calgary. one time i went to as far east as Ohio-Tennessee, as far south as New Orleans and Dallas, went through the flat lands and rode up the Rockies the rest of the way home... I have visited almost all the landlocked states (5 more to go) and 4 along the Gulf states, all by Car. I have been through a lot of big American cities and a lot of tiny towns. ALL OF YOU, North to South - make Canadians look like Bloody Savages. I expected something worse, probably because of Television and the Internet. i ended up leaving your country after the first time i visited, blown away and with a new found VERY REAL love for my southern neighbors. Been 5 times on multi-week trips. will spend time and money there again. 10/10.
There are a lot of crazy things in US from an european point of view, but I totally agree with this post. I found Americans very nice, gentle and caring people. Before going there, I immagined to find rude and aggressive people :)) Too many bad movies! The first time I arrived in Philadelphia my english was not very good, and sometimes I wandered looking for some shop, or the subway or whatever... and I remember men or women that tried to help and listen me patiently. I still feel gratitude for those who made me feel welcomed and safe. Philadelphia is still in my heart! I left the USA in 2011 and I don't know if that's still the case.
Drink sizes. When my family visited in 2017 we landed in Texas for a stopover. First thing I saw in the shops part of the terminal was a dude who was drinking from what looked like an actual f***ing bucket - here in NZ our “large” drinks would be considered an American “small” or maybe “medium”

The way houses are build in the USA is crazy. It’s no wonder they’re all flattened in a tornado / hurricane. And yet they cost so damn much to buy!
That public transport is almost nonexistent in many smaller towns, which makes it a necessity for teens to have their own cars.
Yeah, it's not just not having no public transport. There are a lot of places (I lived in one) where there are no sidewalks, so you can't even walk from one place to another. And if you live in a small place, you can't get a taxi or anything else to come out and pick you up. If you don't have a car, it's almost impossible to get around in the USA. And it's not just small towns. Even big towns have no transportation infrastructure.
American State and National parks are some of the most beautiful places on earth. All parks could use more funding, but American parks are well staffed and maintained. There’s real pride.
Not exactly crazy, but I wanted to test out the stereotype that Americans will talk to anyone so I sought out a sports bar on my first visit. Ended up having a ton of really fun conversations with total strangers who I’ll never talk to ever again. It was great!

The minimal amount of paid days off you get from work. A friend of mine from Wisconsin was very proud he got 20 days off per year. If someone in Germany would offer me only 20 days, I would laugh at him and leave.

I had lived many places in the world, including in Europe, Africa and parts of Asia, but moving to the USA was the biggest culture shock of my life. After 23 years, I got used to a lot of things, but I have to say, I'm very happy to be living back in Europe again.
What really blows me away is how much BoredPanda users are emphatic about knocking one country. We are as diverse as many of the countries you claim, there’s a variety to American that gets glossed over by such a finite list. Shame on a website for abusing and crowd sourcing a list targeting a single group of people. Especially with what the world is going through.

We also are refusing COVID-19 testing for everyone except adults who need to be hospitalized. The only thing free is the testing, but in order to get a test you have to pay for a doctor's appointment which costs money, and none of the treatment is free, unless you have insurance that covers all or some of it.
Tired of the "America is awful" posts. Every country has good and bad stuff. How about writing about the good parts for a change. This is getting old.
