Great Idea. I Will Start Collecting Pretty Leaves This Fall
And how pretty it would be with lots of different colors and shades of leaves!
GREAT idea. So sick of these baby gender reveal messes left behind.
Turned This Old China Cabinet Into A Poison Dart Frog Habitat
You could do that for any type of lizard, snake, or any other pet you put in a tank/cage like hamsters, ferrets, and guinea pigs. It gives them a lot of room and makes a great conversation piece. Not to mention it looks awesome
That's fantastic! It gives you plenty of decent access to clean, feed and update the habitat, keep supplies away underneath. And it looks absolutely bloody awesome 😍 😍 😍
If more things end up getting recycled, reused, and repurposed instead of thrown away, that means fewer products are bought, transported, and made in factories. That, in turn, leads to less pollution, less energy and water consumed, and fewer greenhouse gasses produced.
Fewer resources get wasted while your average consumer saves money because they’re focusing on DIY, not shopping around. It’s a win for everyone who isn’t out to maximize their profits at any cost.

Recycling doesn’t happen in a vacuum. You have to invest in the right infrastructure for the whole project to come together. And that’s a bigger headache than you might think at first: it’s expensive and requires a mind-boggling amount of planning. Urging your local community to recycle more is fruitless if the materials don’t actually get recycled and just end up dumped in some secret faraway landfill.
Remember, you’re not just aiming to recycle plastic chocolate chip cookie containers and soda bottles—there are a ton of different materials that you need to account for. Among them are aluminum, cardboard, electronics, food waste, glass, steel, tires, paper, textiles, yard trimmings, and wood, as well as a range of plastic, polyethylene, and polypropylene containers.

Just as an example of the logistical complexity involved, the United States Environmental Protection Agency explains that there are 15 different types of recycling and other municipal solid waste infrastructure. These include material recovery facilities, anaerobic digesters, composting facilities, electronic recyclers, glass recycling facilities, glass secondary processors, and municipal solid waste landfills.
On top of those, you have metal, paper, plastic, textile, tire, and wood recycling facilities, as well as transfer stations and wood secondary processors. Each place needs specific machinery, technology, systems, and expertise to run properly.
Too Cute
Tic - Tac Containers To Save Seeds.. Cute Idea!
Look for a different kind of container you usually throw in the recycling bin.
Load More Replies...Nice idea, but storing seeds in plastic promotes mold and could ruin the seeds. It is best to store seeds in paper bags. This allows for the air to circulate.
I came here to say this. But I had to buy a box of a hundred just to get the single envelope I needed in a specific size, so I’ve been using the leftovers to save seeds. They work perfectly
Load More Replies...Could probably use these as spice containers to take camping, once you get the smell from the candy out of the box.
Spice bottles work really well, and might already have the correct label. Snus containers work well to, find an abundance of them littered in Sweden.
Wish I had some, most places doen't use prescription bottles any more, they use impossibel to recycle blister packs.
Load More Replies...I Got This Vintage Stepstool Chair For Free From Someone Who Was Throwing It Out. Restored It To Its Original Red And Used Marine-Grade Vinyl For The Seat So It Should Last For Years
I remember being small enough to sit on the steps of my Grandma's stool.
My grandma had one too in her kitchen. I would sit there while she cooked. Good memory.
Load More Replies...I can feel this memory. Have sat on that stool. 70s - our farm - it hung out in the kitchen. Ours was more of a yellow where the red is. Younger me thought the flip in/out steps was rather creative. Still around AFAIK but I think a relative has it now. They were built pretty strong.
Some of my grandparents had these. Honestly, I hated that chair. It is taller than a normal chair, so it does not fit at the table right. If you are over 5ft tall, sitting with your feet on the top step makes your knees stick out, and putting your feet on the bottom step makes the top step dig into the back of your leg. One of my grandmas used that chair exclusively as a step ladder, to reach high shelves in the kitchen. One day she was at my house, and she saw me take my small step ladder out to reach something on a high shelf. She was amazed that it was so compact and light, but sturdy (she thought all step ladders were bulky, heavy a-frames, like the one my grandpa had in the barn). I told her they sell them everywhere. She bought a step ladder like mine on the way home. Then she called my aunt, who had always wanted that weird chair, and told her to come get it. Haha!
Let’s assume for a moment that you’ve got all the recycling facilities set up. Now, you somehow need to convince the population that they should start recycling. It’s a complicated task, though. It essentially involves changing how people perceive their relationship with the environment, spending, and consumption.
My Boys Are Getting Their Own Rooms And I’m On A Shoestring Budget. They Are Entering Their Moody Preteens And Want Dystopian Gamer Cyberpunk Type Of Rooms
One thing my youngest wanted was a toxic waste barrel (I didn’t ask, but I bet it has to do with video games). So this is his new bedside table. The barrel I got for free, and I had just enough leftover grey paint. He is over the moon about it. There will be a secret trap door for storage in the back made with leftover hinges and latches I’ve been saving from another project we cannibalized
Says bedside table, but the laundry tub would be more appropriate, I thought that too
Load More Replies...I'm surprised he asked for a toxic waste barrel and nit a bright red or yellow one. In video games a brightly colored barrel usually explodes when you shoot it. This is still rad as hell!
Love this. However, be carful throwing around a "Biohazard" sign. If there's an emergency near one of those, the 1st responders have to treat it like it's real. Might delay getting help, yes?

Motivating someone to recycle (more) is as much a shift in a person’s mindset and philosophy as it is a physical act of separating your recycling and dumping it in the right container.
This involves cultivating more self-awareness while shopping and educating people about the impact their actions have on the environment. If you make the problem relatable and relevant, you’ll have more people on your side than by just appealing to some lofty, faraway goals.
This Was My Project Yesterday. I Like The Way It Turned Out So Much I Might Keep It Although It Was My Intention To Sell It

What A Great Idea For Repurposing Wellington Boots
Cute, but the chickens will have a lot of that feed on the ground, which gets wasted unless you let the boots empty out and they have to hunt for more food. You can make a similar self feeder from PVC pipes - except where the 'toe' is you angle it up a bit more so they sort of have to stick their head down in. Less waste that way. I made a wooden box version from scrap wood. Same basic idea. You built it so from the side it is sort of a 'J' shape.
I made some like that but the chickens just manage to fill them with shavings lol a salvaged galvanized round feeder on top of an old tire rim has been perfect though!

But be sure it's closer than 3 feet and farther than 6 ft. so they don't hit the windows. Sorry for not converting to metric for pretty much the rest of the world.
Load More Replies...First of all, you have to make recycling accessible and easy. The more difficult it is to do, the more people are not going to bother. So, you’ll have to set up lots of recycling containers and bins in people’s areas.
Few people are going to walk five minutes to throw out their bag o’plastic and paper if there’s a general waste bin a few seconds away from them. Meanwhile, you want everyone to have clear instructions about what they can and can’t recycle.

Here's The Great Seat My Clever Husband, Graham, Made From An Old Timber Bed That Had Been Put Out On The Kerb For Council Pickup
It sat in the garage for months because I couldn't bear to think of it going to landfill and eventually he said, "What ARE you doing with that bed?!" I asked if we might cut the end in half and use it to make arms for a bench seat. We have since added cushions and it's my favourite spot to curl up with a book. Someone suggested painting it white, but I just love the look of old timber
Please the wood as is. Maybe add a wood protector / preservative since it is outside. The cut edges on the cement will wick up moisture.
Sounds like this is in England, this was put out as trash to pick up.
Load More Replies...Next, you’ll want to offer shoppers alternatives to excessive plastic packaging and bags. If you ban plastic bags or make them more expensive than durable paper ones, you’ll change consumers’ habits by appealing to their sense of frugality. Nobody wants to pay more for something of similar quality.
At the same time, companies need to take their eco-friendly stances seriously: though packaging can help protect products, there are egregious examples that show how wasteful and anti-environment some businesses can be.

The Facebook group has a huge following from all over the world. Currently, 1.5 million internet users are members of this community. The core idea is for folks to share useful information about reusing, recycling, and repurposing things to inspire others to do the same.
If you feel motivated to join the group, all you have to do is answer a few simple questions so that the administrator team running the whole thing knows you’re not a bot or a spammer. And in this day and age, that extra layer of verification goes a long way to keep any online community more authentic.

A Great Way To Reuse And Recycle Wine Corks
Assuming the wine was thoroughly washed off before use, it shouldn't be any more susceptible than other untreated wood. Cork is used in all kinds of things including floor tiles and sub-flooring, sound insulation in walls and ceilings, shoe soles, and furniture cushioning. The only downside I see in this use is that it would not be very sturdy against squirrel teeth or sharp beaks; otherwise it might be better than just using typical thin wood boards since the corks would lend at least a little insulation against big temperature swings, although good placement is the best way to help with that regardless of construction.

This Antique Wine Rack Works Really Well As A Hand Towel Holder
I admit, it's cute; but this "antique" looks like something I've seen in TJ Maxx.
This T-Shirt Quilt Was Made With My College T-Shirts Repurposed
I had not worn them for a very long time and did not want to throw them away or donate them. The purple fabric and the back of the quilt was leftover fabric my Mom had. My Mom sews and has lots of leftover fabric from various projects. My Mom made this quilt for me and gave it to me for my birthday 5 years ago
To do this, buy woven iron-on interfacing. Put the interfacing onto the inside of the t-shirt, and iron. This will stick the two layers together. You can then cut the t-shirt, and it will behave like a woven fabric, not a jersey one. This makes sewing the pieces together so much easier!
I want to do this with all my band t-shirts that are thread worn or I don't fit into anymore. This seems like a good tip. Do you have any more tips for this process @arthbach ?
Load More Replies...I've been meaning to do this for years. I still have a bag with all my t-shirts. Except I'm one of the world's worst procrastinators. I graduated in 1997. :)
My mom made one of these for my daughter when she went off to college. I totally stole it.
I gave a large bag of my husbands T-shirts to my brother so my SIL could do a quilt. My brother and I had a falling out and after being NC and then his death I finally got all of our family photos back from my SIL, I asked about the shirts. She said their basement flooded and the shirts were ruined.
Log Cabin Home Transformation
Nah. Used shipping containers are not that great as everyone seems to think
It would be like using an old trailer as the frame for your house.
Load More Replies...My wife and i were in love with the idea of making a shipping container house for YEARS....but, the reality is that they kinda suck. A 40 x 9 ft container will run anywhere between $2500 and $5000 + shipping, and the smaller ones aren't much cheaper, and you have to go through a reputable dealer because who knows what kind of toxic c**p could have been shipped in them otherwise. Once you cut any kind of hole in the shell, the entire structure has to be reenforced. With steel. Which makes the container kind of pointless, then you need to run wiring, plumbing, HVAC, insulation and frame it out for drywall, which eats into the already meager area of the container. At best it's a stylistic choice, that's going to end up more expensive, and being more work.
Looks like these people are at least not cutting into their interior space. Might be the smarter way to utilize a shipping container... Could use conventional siding, too.
Load More Replies...You have to insulate and put in HVAC and plumbing to make it liveable.
Turning shipping containers into tiny homes or travel trailers has become a big thing lately. I've lost count of the amount of videos that I've seen YouTube of people converting or using these to live in.

A Giant Spool, Now It’s Our Patio Table
Yup. I didn't go to college, but there was a time when a wooden spool was one of my pieces of furniture.
Load More Replies...Every young single guy back in the day had these as furniture in his apartment, along with the mattress on the floor of his bedroom, the old sheets as his curtains, and the lawn furniture as his living room set. But, even though he may have been short on real furniture, he always made sure he had a state of the art kickass stereo system and TV. Every one of them. Without fail.
Those wooden spools are being replaced by metal. It'll last generations if cared for.
Don't Throw Away That Old Desk And Chair, Recycle Them Instead
I was thinking the same thing. I had a huge clear out last year (you know when you lose your job and figure it's a good time to tackle the mess in the garage...).Anything in good or reasonable condition was taken to charity shops. Anything in need of a bit more attention, or just too low value/odd to donate was advertised on a neighbourhood website for free collection. My Older Brother Needed A Back Rest For His New Walk In Tub That Would Not Restrict The Water Jets In The Back
So I ordered these mesh lumbar supports online, doubled them up for added strength, then mounted them to the tub with suction cup hooks from Dollar Tree.
I more recently acquired an old office chair my neighbor was throwing out. The back is mesh with a more sturdy reinforced plastic frame. I just have to figure out how to securely mount it then I’ll have a good replacement for the one in the photo.
I think I’ll just use bigger suction cups mounted directly to the chair frame. I actually have some in mind that clamp down very securely
I have these! They don't work with all chairs. With two of them, one is useless. But not anymore!!! I'm so excited!!!

I Repurposed This Smoking Stand That Belonged To My Grandparents. The Label Under It Reads 1928
That's pretty! I see nothing wrong with repurposing antique family heirlooms if it keeps your memories alive. I repurposed a big ceramic lamp my great-grandma had in her sitting room. I asked her if I could have it, AND I told her what I was going to do with it, and she was fine with it. I took the socket off, plugged the hole, and installed a round piece of glass on it. It is now an end table, and I think of my grandma every time I use it. However, my aunt was super mad at what I did. She ended up with the matching lamp (I was supposed to get both of them), and she got so angry when I refused to give her my lamp. Ironically, she did not keep hers; she said it was too big, and she put it in storage for years before giving it to a junk shop. I had offered her money for it, so I could have matching end tables, but she did not want to sell it to me because I "ruined" the other one. Now a stranger has hers, and I'm still enjoying mine and thinking of my granny. Lol.

What's wrong with the natural wood? Why does everybody always smother it in paint?
If the wood is damaged, it's a way to save a solid piece of furniture.
Load More Replies...I agree. However, some furniture was cheap c**p even back in the day when it was badly made from crappy wood. I have no issue if someone paints a piece like that. I DO take real issue with someone taking a piece made from gorgeous quality solid hardwood and crapping it up by painting over it. That is an abomination and should be illegal.
